Secret-Shoreline-Stones hidden in local parks for kids to find

Monday, December 28, 2020

Kids! This stone is hidden in Twin Ponds.
There are clues on the blog page to tell
you where it is hidden.
Two ten year olds, Evie and her friend Clark, have created a pandemic project and are challenging other kids to join them.

I am a 10 year old kid who lives in Shoreline, WA. I created SecretShorelineStones.blogspot.com for kids stuck at home during the pandemic who need something fun to do.

My friend and I painted stones to hide in Shoreline parks, and now it's up to you to find them!

  1. If you find one of our stones, leave it for the next kid but take a picture if you like.
  2. Come to our blog site, comment on that park's post and upload a pic if you want.
  3. See if you can find another stone at a different park!

We have hidden stones in these parks so far:

Charles the Clown: Free video chats and magic trick lessons with Lake Forest Park children’s entertainer

Sunday, December 13, 2020

Lake Forest Park resident
Charles the Clown
Charles The Clown (Charles Kraus) initiated his video chats with kids and parents in late March.

Children talked with him about clowning, enjoyed a sample of Charles’ silly humor, and helped Biscuit The Dog Puppet learn to count.

Biscuit also showed off a lot of his dog-art.

In return, children raced into their rooms and came back with their own drawings.

Charles performed with balloons and magic, and then it was time to go.

Some families visited multiple times.

Now Charles is gearing up for a new series of chats beginning in mid December.

“There are situations where helping to meet the needs of children means performing in shelters, visiting at hospital bedsides, or providing shows for disadvantaged or displaced families,” Kraus said.

He received the 2007 King County, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award for Community Service for his efforts to entertain children in such circumstances.

“But covid is entirely different,” the entertainer said. I can't go to a school or make a hospital stop. My solution is to offer virtual visits."

His Zoom chats caught on shortly after they were launched, and then The Washington Post profiled Charles in its Extraordinary People series

“That sort of expanded things.”

While this was happening, Charles’ reconfigured his stage show, played to schools, libraries and private party bookings in Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and other locations.

During birthday shows, the clown twists a large balloon animal present and rather mysteriously, makes it vanish, then reappear right in the birthday child’s home. How does he do it? Charles is a magician as well as a clown so he’s sworn to secrecy. But he’ll be revealing some of his tricks during his new round of chats. In addition to clown fun, he is adding a magic trick lesson for children 8 and older.

"During the chats a child can select colors for the balloons I'm inflating, suggest the animal I should create, then decide what to name it. Often, a youngster notices that I have a balloon stuck on my thumb ... or even my nose. That happens to clowns."

Video chats can be arranged by emailing linda@charlestheclown.com

Brier children’s author/illustrator helps Tooth Fairy soar with new storybook aimed at teaching kids about healthy dental habits

Thursday, November 19, 2020

Virtual Storytime set for 10am on Friday, November 20, 2020 via Brier Library website

The Tooth Fairy is launching her new storybook virtually – with some help from Brier-based children’s author Kelly Rae Bahr, who wrote and illustrated the book titled The Clean Teeth Club: A Tooth Fairy Tale.

As a champion for good oral health, the Tooth Fairy has expanded her popular in-person youth education program – The Tooth Fairy Experience – to include a virtual storytime featuring the new book, as well as an oral health learning opportunity for public libraries statewide.

The program, presented free by Delta Dental of Washington and developed in partnership with the School Nurse Organization of Washington (SNOW) and Arcora Foundation, is designed to help improve dental habits at an early age.

The Tooth Fairy – joined by Bahr, who will introduce the book – will be bringing her virtual program to Sno-Isle Libraries’ Brier Library at 10am on Friday, November 20. Her presentation also includes fun smile facts, proper brushing techniques, tooth science experiments and more!

The new storybook – published by Delta Dental of Washington – features a lively story about a young boy on a quest to find the perfect club to join – while learning some valuable lessons along the way. The book is designed for children 10 and under, leaving young readers eager for their next visit to the dentist.

Families interested in joining can register for this FREE Zoom online event at Sno-Isle.net/Brier. Upon registering, families will receive a Zoom link which will provide them access to the event.

“I am thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to collaborate with Delta Dental of Washington on my first picture book,” said author and illustrator Kelly Rae Bahr.
“Tasked with making dental health appealing and even exciting to kids, I came up with a club that every kid can join in only three steps: The Clean Teeth Club.
"My hope is that children will be inspired to follow the three quests to clean teeth and maybe even start a club of their own for their family and friends. Three cheers for healthy teeth and a squeaky-clean smile!”

Following the event, the storybook will be available for free digital viewing on The Tooth Fairy Experience website, and for check-out at the Sno-Isle Brier Library.

“It is so important to teach oral health from a young age and who better to learn it from than the Tooth Fairy herself," said Sno-Isle Library Associate Morgan Farrow.

For anyone interested in scheduling a presentation for their library, school or youth organization, a “Request a Tooth Fairy Visit” form on the program’s website www.TheToothFairyExperience.com or send an email to Hello@TheToothFairyExperience.com.

Delta Dental of Washington is the state’s leading dental benefit provider, covering nearly 3 million people in Washington state and nationally. As the only not-for-profit carrier dedicated to improving oral health in Washington, Delta Dental plays a vital role extending access to care for the underserved and vulnerable populations through the Arcora Foundation, corporate philanthropy and oral health advocacy. $10 million ABCmouse settlement: Avoiding auto-renewal traps

Deceptive advertising from ABC Mouse

By Andrew Smith, Director, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection

Online subscription services can be a convenience for consumers and a boon for business – especially now that so many people are shopping from home.

But under the law, companies have an obligation to explain the details of the deal up front, clearly disclose any automatic renewal terms, get consumers’ express consent before billing, and offer simple ways to cancel.

The FTC just announced a $10 million settlement with online learning company ABCmouse for allegedly violating those established consumer protection principles.

The case offers lessons for subscription-based businesses about the perils of snaring customers in a negative option trap.

Dandylyon Drama summer camps; all ages special needs camp

Friday, July 10, 2020

At this difficult time when theatre organizations are closing down (permanently or temporarily) due to COVID-19 and social distancing restrictions, Dandylyon Drama has found creative ways to keep its robust summer theatre program going strong.

Founded in 2009, Dandylyon Drama brings theatre programs into multiple schools in North King County, and has run successful summer camps for several seasons.

The organization has grown exponentially over ten years and it is ready to take on the challenge of bringing arts education and programming to kids during a time when so many outlets are closed.

This summer Dandylyon Drama is offering online, in-person, and even a hybrid of both, for kids ages four to 18, including a camp for those with special needs.

“Our mission is to grow more creative, compassionate, and courageous people through quality and accessible arts education,” says Dandylyon Drama founder and Artistic Director Melani Lyons.
“We feel fortunate that we’re able to really turn this mission into action by finding ways to keep kids actively involved in theatre-making during these complicated times. It is definitely taking creativity, compassion, and courage from teaching artists, staff, campers, and families to make this happen. I’m proud that we are being trusted to offer safe and meaningful summer options to the community.”

The camps being offered this summer include fully online camps (via Zoom) for ages 4-6 which include circus, Star Wars, and Superhero themes, and two full productions for ages 8-14.

All online camps end with virtual performances for family and friends. Modified physically-distanced outdoor camps are available for ages 6-10 throughout the summer in Shoreline’s Cromwell Park.

Dandylyon Drama’s staff has worked closely with Shoreline officials to create a safe and healthy environment for all campers. Older campers (ages 12-18) can enjoy a hybrid camp going both online and in-person.

In addition to these camps, Dandylyon Drama is offering a Special Needs Online Film Club (currently underway) which brings an online arts program to people of all ages with special needs.

This camp is an extension of Parachute Players which, under the fiscal sponsorship and mentorship of Dandylyon Drama, produces immersive, multi-sensory theatrical experiences for young people with disabilities under the belief that ALL people need and deserve equitable access to quality arts experiences. Future special-needs online programming will be announced soon by Dandylyon Drama and Parachute Players.

Of bringing the online camp to those with special needs, Parachute Players director Maddie Napel says “It’s been unbelievably life-affirming to connect with this ensemble of young adults online.
"I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well this group does connecting over Zoom— some students have really opened up and participated more than they had in person. I think it takes away some performance anxiety to be in our own homes with family nearby to support.”

Dandylyon Drama’s success with the online camps comes from multiple hours of practice to get it right, working through trial and error to find the best technology and the strongest virtual activities that will keep the campers interested, engaged, and fulfilled.

Along with focusing on the solid online camps, Dandylyon Drama’s teaching artists have worked tirelessly to create a safe outdoor camp experience that will bring the joy and fun of traditional summer camp while following strict social distancing and safety guidelines. An outline of the outdoor camp’s safety plan can be found online.

Information and registration for Dandylyon Drama’s 2020 Summer Camps can be found on their website. Dandylyon Drama can be followed on Facebook and Instagram (@dandylyondrama).

Dandylyon Drama’s mission is to grow more creative, compassionate, and courageous people through quality and accessible performing arts education.
