World Concern fights child trafficking with annual S.O.S. 5k in Shoreline

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

World Concern’s 11th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5k, 19303 Fremont Ave N Shoreline 98133, Saturday, May 11, 9am expects 1000 runners

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and defenseless, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

In Nepal, a family’s oldest daughter was lured with false promises of a well-paying job in India. Sadly, she has likely been sold into the sex industry. And now their younger daughters are in danger from the same trafficker.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

On Saturday, May 11, more than 1,000 people will run in World Concern’s annual S.O.S. 5k to Seek Out and Stop trafficking and raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

“World Concern’s work with children is driven by the fact that the most vulnerable in our world need our protection, particularly our children,” Nick Archer, Vice President of World Concern said.
“Millions of children remain vulnerable to trafficking due to circumstances beyond their, or even their families, control.”

The public is invited to join World Concern’s S.O.S 5k on May 11 to help put an end to this horrific crime against the world’s most vulnerable children.

For more information or to register, visit the S.O.S. 5k website

Early Life Speech and Language hosts 7th Annual Beer Fest to raise money to support FREE speech therapy for local kids

Sunday, April 7, 2019

Early Life Speech and Language, a local non-profit providing speech and language therapy for kids ages 2-7, at no cost to the families, hosts its 7th annual Beer Fest Fundraiser in the Seattle Scottish Rite Masonic Center on Saturday April 13, 2019 from noon to 5pm.

Director of Development and Communications Susie Beresford said, “This event grows year after year and raises money to support this wonderful service we provide. The community really rallies to make this happen.
"Local breweries donate their beer, Central Market donates the tastiest bratwursts in town, Macrina Bakery donates brioche buns and the parents of our sweet kids in here, donate their time and efforts to make this event happen.”

Early Life Speech and Language was founded by the Scottish Rite Masons more than 30 years ago to fill a void. Speech and language services for children are severely limited. Either the child does not qualify for services, services are too expensive, or services are limited by a billable hour or insurance coverage. Early Life Speech and Language currently has clinics in Bremerton, Seattle, Spokane, Walla Walla, and service areas across the state of Washington.

Early Life Speech and Language provides speech and language therapy to children ages 2 – 7 at no cost to the families. One parent said, “Not having to deal with insurance or the financial strain that other speech therapy institutions require allows us as a family to focus on that, our family.”

There will be a more expansive list of breweries than ever before, 21 to be exact. Lowercase, Oakshire, Deschutes, Georgetown, Finnriver Cider, Alaskan, Lagunitas, Wild Ride, Mazama, Diamond Knot, Pear Up Cider, Salish Sea, Middleton, Scuttlebutt, Gallagher’s, Explorer, 192, Mac and Jack’s, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Postdoc, and Triplehorn Brewing.

Beresford said that “Our auction is awesome. We have several gifts from local Edmonds businesses including the Edmonds Center for the Arts, Red Twig, Scratch Distillery and more. Auction items include high end cigar packages, University of Washington football tickets, dinner and a show packages for the best theaters in town, painting with cats, and so much more!”

Come learn about Early Life Speech and Language and how they plan to help more kids in Washington state than ever before.

The event wil be held at Seattle Scottish Rite, 1207 N 152nd St, Shoreline 98133 from noon to 5:00pm on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Ticket price: $30 if purchased through this link prior to event, $35 at the door. Ticket includes tastings, commemorative tasting cup, access to the silent auction, bratwurst lunch and raffle tickets.

Please reach out to Connor Kelly at ckelly@earlylifespeech.org with any questions.

Early Life Speech and Language is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) (Federal tax ID number: 91-1239678) and is registered as a Washington State Charity (#4125).

Shoreline dad has twins - and kidney dialysis

Thursday, March 14, 2019

Ryan and the twins who were 7 months old in this photo
They turn 1 on March 14 - World Kidney Day!

By Cynthia Flash

Imagine the joy of caring for twin toddlers – two sets of diapers, two napping routines, two energetic bodies exploring their world.

Now imagine being connected to a kidney dialysis machine four hours a day, five days a week – and still taking care of those little ones.

That’s the life of Shoreline resident Ryan Tibayan, a stay-at-home dad who cares for Kaila and Greyson, who will celebrate their first birthday March 14.

Ryan, a Blanchet High School graduate, developed diabetes in his 20s. As a result, he experienced kidney failure two years ago – requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival. He is on the transplant waitlist.

“We found out we were having twins at our first ultrasound,” he said.
“At first I was freaked out, but then I was ecstatic because I never thought we could have kids with my health problems.”

The twins’ birthday this year falls on World Kidney Day – a time to help the world understand how to prevent and treat kidney disease.

Diabetes and heart disease are key contributors to chronic kidney disease, which now affects 850 million people worldwide and is the 11th leading cause of global mortality.

Rather than undergoing kidney dialysis at a clinic, Ryan instead does it at home. There he has more control over the time and frequency of the treatments that remove water and waste from his body. Ryan was trained to do home dialysis by a nurse at Northwest Kidney Centers. It allows him to set his own dialysis schedule – around his child-rearing duties.

“Northwest Kidney Centers makes the transition (to dialysis) so much easier. They offer tons of classes to get you more comfortable with the situation – to have an idea what to expect,” Ryan said. “They give you the ability to reach out to someone already on dialysis so you can talk to someone who is going through the same things you’re going through.”

Dialysis at home is “way better than having to leave my kids three days a week four hours at a time for in-center dialysis,” Ryan said. “It allows me to not miss anything in my kids’ life. It’s on my schedule so I can do it whenever there’s time, like if they’re taking a nap.” He’s also able to be around when the kids need to be fed.

“I feel like you don’t have to let kidney disease or dialysis run your life. You can lead a pretty normal life if you want to,” said Ryan, who left his job as a computer assistant to stay at home with the kids while his wife Nicole works as a manager at Best Buy.
“But you have to have a really strong support system to do that. My kids give me extra motivation to continue doing dialysis and my wife, who does my needle punctures even while working full time, plays a big role in my everyday health.”

Kidney disease affects one in 10 people. Those at highest risk include anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure, those who have a relative with kidney disease, those who are overweight or over age 60, those who are of African, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American or Hispanic descent.

Anyone who is at risk is encouraged to talk to their doctor and get tested. Kidney health tests are simple and inexpensive: a blood test, urinalysis and blood pressure measurement. Other ways to keep kidneys healthy are to reduce salt in your diet, avoid overusing over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen, and to stay fit.

Find more information about kidney disease prevention and treatment here.

Giving Tuesday

Monday, November 26, 2018

Tuesday, November 27 - the day after a weekend of spending money - is the day designated to donate to your favorite charities - Giving Tuesday

Many of the charities have sponsors who will match your gift - many do not.

During last year's Give BIG campaign I attempted to list all the local charities that were participating. Inevitably, I missed some. I also found the main website pretty buggy.

The very best way to donate is to go to the website for your favorites and look for the link to donate. It will take you exactly where you need to be to get your money to your charity.

During the holiday shopping, don't forget that Amazon will allow you to donate a percentage of your purchases to a charity through Amazon Smile.

Help a charity - feel good - get a tax write-off - what's not to love?

World Concern responds to help survivors of Indonesian earthquake and tsunami

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

On Friday, Sept. 28, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, and was followed less than half an hour later by a powerful tsunami that killed more than 1,200 people and left at least 200,000 people in need of immediate aid.

“This is the worst devastation I’ve seen since the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. Looking at these images brings flashbacks of 12 years ago,” said Chris Sheach, World Concern Director of Disaster Response.
“There are still places that the Indonesian government cannot reach. They are asking the international aid community for help with medical assistance, water, food, and shelter.”

The earthquake and tsunami in a densely populated city and rural areas has affected more than 2.5 million people. Children have been separated from their families, thousands of homes have been demolished, infrastructure has been destroyed, and people are living outside without shelter. The region has experienced more than 250 aftershocks through today, many of which have been strong.

As affected areas can be reached, Shoreline-based World Concern and partners on the ground are assessing the needs of families and preparing to respond. Donate HERE

Buttering the salmon

Text and photos by Jerry Pickard

On Sunday, September 9, 2018, Lake Forest Park Police Department held its Annual Salmon BBQ supporting Special Olympics at the Third Place Commons Farmers' Market in Town Center.

A steady line of customers all day

Despite the early morning's cloudiness the weather cleared and the day warmed up in time for Chief Sutton's ride in the dunk tank. He survived.

The dunk tank awaits

At one thirty pm there was still a line of customers. The BBQ Master was constantly busy cooking salmon. Officers buttered the salmon to keep it moist and tasty while cooking.

The chef was busy

A lot of salmon went over the counter for a highly successful day for LFPPD and The Special Olympics!
