Local family raises nearly $1 million for children with disabilities

Thursday, May 3, 2018

Registration now open

By Rosie Cobos

We thought he was just a fussy baby,” recalls Lynn Van Hollebeke after son Justin Van Hollebeke was born in 1996. That notion — and a family’s reality — was crushed in “just a minute of time,” during a visit with their pediatrician just weeks after Justin was born, said dad Louie Van Hollebeke, a longtime resident of Lake Forest Park.

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that causes ammonia to accumulate in the blood and often becomes evident in the first few days of life. An infant with this condition may be lacking in energy (lethargic) or unwilling to eat and have a poorly controlled breathing rate or body temperature.
Some babies with this disorder may experience seizures or unusual body movements, developmental delays, or go into a coma. Estimates suggest it affects one out of every 100,000 to 800,000 babies born worldwide.

Justin with sister and mom, Lynn
The Van Hollebeke family was referred to Wonderland Developmental Center, a regional leader in providing early-intervention services for infants and children with developmental disabilities.

At Wonderland a team of occupational therapists worked with both Justin and the entire family.

The professionals at Wonderland helped the Van Hollebekes in teaching Justin to use a wheelchair and keeping his muscles and joints as loose as possible due to extreme spasticity.

It was through these weekly services that the Van Hollebekes’ met other local families with children with disabilities, which helped them support one another and build lifelong friendships.

Sadly, Justin passed away shortly after his third birthday.

Determined to pay it forward for the support the Van Hollebekes had received, they created a golf tournament fundraiser in Justin’s memory in support of Wonderland.

That was 19 years, 4,000 golfers, and nearly $1,000,000 ago. The Van Hollebekes recently shared their story with local videographer Camille Adams; readers can find the short and inspiring video on here.

Justin with dad, Louie
During Justin’s time at Wonderland, the agency served an average of 30 kids per month, and the staff numbered less than 10.

Today, 25 therapists (occupational, physical, and speech language), as well family support specialists work with 239 children and their families per month… and the need is growing.

King County estimates that demand for the early-intervention services that Wonderland provides will minimally increase by 8% per year.

“I see the critical importance of early childhood development,” says Dr. Kristi Kiyonaga, a Shoreline-area pediatrician and Wonderland Board Member. “Wonderland offers exceptional, family-centered early-intervention services to my patients.”

Wonderland serves children with a variety of diagnoses: autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol syndrome, and general developmental delays among others in south Snohomish and north King counties. This includes the communities of Edmonds, Woodway, Shoreline, Bothell, Kenmore, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Brier, Everett, Woodinville, Kirkland, Duvall, Seattle, and more.

What can you do to help other children and families like the Van Hollebekes?

The 2018 Justin Van Hollebeke Memorial Golf Tournament is being held on May 12th at top-rated, scenic Newcastle Golf Course, starting at noon.

We still have a few slots open for golfers -- duffers to low handicaps welcome. The emphasis is on fun for a good cause.

Non-golfers are also welcome to join us for a steak, salmon, or vegetarian dinner while enjoying the sound of bagpipes at sunset and the best view of Puget Sound.

Click HERE for more information or to register.

“At Wonderland there’s always someone there to help. But at some point, we need people to stand up,” Louie Van Hollebeke says. “This golf tournament is a way for people in the community to give back.”

Do you have questions about a child’s development? The most critical time period for a child’s development is between the ages of birth to three. Babies and young children can’t wait, so give Wonderland a call—we offer no-cost evaluations. Interested in volunteering or donating to our therapeutic programs? Artist Michael G. Reagan speaks at American Legion meeting

Sunday, January 28, 2018

Artist Michael G. Reagan, with some of the
5000 portraits he has drawn

On Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Post 227 held its first meeting of 2018, with featured speaker, artist Michael G. Reagan of Edmonds.

Michael G. "Red" Reagan in Vietnam.
On April 10, 1968 after serving his country as a U. S. Marine, Michael returned home from Vietnam.

He knew he had been spared for a reason and needed to know what that reason was.

While in Nam Michael drew portraits of his fellow Marines.

In some cases, those images were all that returned home.

Reagan made portraits of all of the
Sandy Hook victims

Michael G. Reagan has raised over ten million dollars for charities across the country, primarily with his artwork.

Now Michael is engaged in what he calls "the most important project he has ever done". The Fallen Hero Portrait Project.

He is creating portraits of all of the Fallen, free of charge, for their families. So far he has completed over 5000 free portraits.

In 2007 Michael was awarded the American Legion's Patriot Award and in 2009 the VFW Commander in Chief Gold Medal of Merit. Then in 2010 he was named the 2010 Veteran Volunteer of the Year in Washington State.

In 2013 the Department of The Army awarded him The Outstanding Civilian Service Medal.

In March of 2015 the Lynnwood Elks presented him The General Douglas MacArthur Award, and on March 25, 2015 he was awarded the Citizen Service Before Self Honor (known to some as the Civilian Medal of Honor) by the Medal of Honor Foundation in Washington DC.

After the Sandy Hook Massacre, Michael was contacted by an acquaintance who lived nearby. He gathered pictures of all the victims and sent them to Michael. Michael drew the portraits of them all and a local frame shop donated the frames. After completion, Michael crated all the portraits and shipped them to his friend. The Mayor of the town held a meeting of all the relatives and presented them with their portraits.

Photos Reagan used to draw Nisei soldier portraits.

Michael obtained pictures of WWII Nisei soldiers who were Medal of Honor recipients.

In spite of the way the American Japanese were treated, these men volunteered and served in All-Japanese units in Italy and Europe.

Reagan was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation

Michael captivated the audience as he spoke for over an hour. He fielded questions afterward. (Michael with his display boards of some of the thousands of people he has drawn.

At the end of his presentation, Sgt At Arms Russell Kehrer (left) and Commander Larry Fischer (right) presented Michael with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Michael may be reached at his website or the Fallen Heroes Project. Michael says to feel free to contact him.

BECU awards $15,000 to Turning Point

Monday, December 11, 2017

BECU announced $500,000 in awards to member-nominated non-profits for its 2017 People Helping People recognition.

At a ceremony held on December 5, 18 non-profit organizations received awards ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 across five categories, including Open Doors for Multicultural Families, First Washington, Friends of the Children – Seattle and Outdoors for All Foundation.

This year, more than 230 BECU members nominated their favorite, local non-profits serving the Puget Sound region, Spokane and beyond. The recognized organizations are tackling a broad range of important issues including homelessness, healthcare, education, poverty and hunger.

Turning Point Seattle received $15,000 through the People Helping People Awards to continue their work in the community by investing in at-risk youth and underserved families.

Turning Point says about themselves:
We believe in partnering with local agencies to combine resources that strengthen and support low-income and disadvantaged families, and we have partnered with the City of Shoreline, Shoreline School District, Center for Human Services, YMCA, and many other organizations to that end.
We do basketball camps, teen nights, and partner with Ballinger Homes Family Support to provide tutoring and afterschool programs. We adopted an after-school program that was being cut due to budget restraints at the Center for Human Services. We offer summer day camps, staff a summer lunch program, send youth to YMCA leadership camps. We cultivate the Twin Ponds local giving garden.

Since 2013, BECU has donated $970,000 to local charities through the program.

Funding for the People Helping People Awards tripled this year due to BECU’s “Make a Purchase. Make a Difference” campaign. This two-month initiative encouraged BECU members to embrace the people helping people philosophy by helping to raise funds by simply using their BECU Debit Mastercard. For every purchase made with the card, BECU donated one cent toward the People Helping People Awards.

In addition to the funds given to the 2017 award winners, BECU is also granting $3,000 to all past People Helping People Award recipients for a total of $153,000 in further giving.

BECU is a not-for-profit credit union owned by its members. With more than 1 million members and over $17 billion in assets, BECU is the largest credit union in Washington.

Any size will do but sturdy kids' shoes are most appreciated as rural Nicaraguans kids often have to walk over rough terrain to get to school.

World Concern celebrates $6.4 million gift - largest in its history

Tuesday, November 28, 2017

From left: World Concern President Jacinta Tegman, CRISTA Ministries Chief Development Officer Dave Eller and Foundation Relations Officer Patricia Wiebe King celebrate a $6.4 million donation from the 25-40 Foundation, the largest gift in World Concern’s 62-year history.

World Concern, a Shoreline-based Christian relief and development agency, received the largest gift in the organization’s 62-year history, and celebrated the donation on Giving Tuesday, an annual day of giving promoted by charities in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The $6.4 million gift was given by the 25-40 Foundation, a private family foundation that has supported World Concern’s community development work in Africa since 2013.

The donation will fund the expansion of World Concern’s One Village Transformed program, a sustainable transformational development program that tackles extreme poverty by empowering community members to plan and implement projects themselves.

World Concern President Jacinta Tegman expressed her gratitude on behalf of the organization.

“Two years ago, we set out on a strategic course to expand World Concern’s reach to more people in great need in some of the world’s hardest to reach places. We planned to launch 82 new villages through our One Village Transformed initiative over five years.
"At that time, we felt the clear call to this mission, but we knew we had to pray for such a massive growth plan to be funded. We stepped out in faith, trusting God that his promises of provision in Matthew 6 would be fulfilled. Today, because of the heartfelt generosity of the 25-40 Foundation, we are seeing this come to fruition,” she said.

This funding will impact the lives of at least 30,000 people in Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Uganda, Chad and Somalia, and will enable World Concern to launch an additional 15 villages over the course of the next six years.

“This family has such selfless compassion for people in need, and they’re savvy to dig below the surface and really understand how community development works,” said Patricia Wiebe King, Foundation Relations Officer.
“We’re grateful for their confidence in the work of World Concern, resulting in this incredible gift to close out their foundation.”
World Concern is a part of CRISTA Ministries. More information about World Concern’s programs, or to donate, here

Shoebox full of treats for a child in need
Last week City Calvary Chapel was again the Drop-Off location for Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.

Churches, schools, groups and individuals dropped off 1145 shoe boxes packed with toys, t-shirts, dolls, school supplies, hygiene items, books, etc. and maybe a message and photo of the sender.

These boxes are shipped all over the world and distributed to children who may never have received a gift from anyone in their lives.

Our Northwest boxes are going to Peru, the Philippines or Indonesia.

Volunteers at City Calvary and a little girl
who came in with her mother

Last year the Samaritan's Purse organization, which has existed for 20 years, collected 11.5 million boxes nationwide which were sent to 104 countries.

The website Operation Christmas Child has videos of the faces of the children when they open boxes which have been carried by trucks, canoes, even camels to villages across the globe.

Top donations came from Seattle Formosan Christian Church, Shoreline Christian School, Shoreline Community Church, Network Christian Ministries, and Lake City Presbyterian Church.

The organization, Samaritan's Purse, is involved in rescue operations throughout the year and throughout the world.

They have the means to construct an operational hospital in a day and bring in the personnel to deliver the services needed in all kinds of trauma and tragedies, from earthquakes, floods to refugee crises.

Third Place Books to donate 20% of Saturday sales to Puerto Rico

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

20% of Saturday sales for Puerto Rico

This Saturday, October 21, 2017, Third Place Books will donate 20 percent of sales at all three of its store locations (Lake Forest Park, Ravenna, and Seward Park) to relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which has been devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Proceeds will go to Unidos Disaster Relief Fund, sponsored by the Hispanic Federation, an organization that Consumer Reports says “has been reviewed and received high ratings from two of the watchdogs, Charity Navigator and BBB Wise Giving Alliance.”

The donation is the idea of Christina Bearer, a bookseller at Third Place Books Ravenna. “We all know that the individual can be way more powerful when joined together with others,” Bearer said in an email to the company’s management.

“I feel galvanized to turn to my community and ask, what can we do together to address a terrible need? It feels very natural for me to turn to Third Place and hope that maybe we can all do something together, and make a difference that way.”

Third Place Books joins other literary bookstores nationwide that have made similar efforts, like Webster’s (State College, PA) and Island Bookstore (Outer Banks, NC), and publishers like Fireside and Restless Books, as well as the ad hoc group Publishers for Puerto Rico.

The decision to donate a portion of Saturday’s proceeds came quickly: one of the benefits of being a community-based, independently owned business. With little time to organize, we hope that coverage of this fundraiser inspires Seattleites to take part— perhaps by taking care of some early holiday shopping— and that other bookstores and Seattle-based businesses will also participate.
