Texas Floods & Hurricane Harvey Relief Donations

Thursday, August 31, 2017

Photo from NASA

From Carl Lunak, Emergency Manager
Northshore Emergency Management Coalition

In response to numerous inquiries from our community Northshore Emergency Management Coalition is providing the following recommendations for relief donations for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

  • Red Cross: The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help provide immediate relief. Text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. You can also visit redcross.org or call 1- 800-RED CROSS.
  • United Way: text UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund.
  • Salvation Army: Donations to support The Salvation Army's Hurricane Harvey relief efforts can be made at helpsalvationarmy.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

Donate cash, not supplies:

Most charities prefer monetary donations instead of supplies. These are more flexible and cause less of a strain on the charity, allowing them to help more.

USAID explains, "Unlike material donations, cash involves no transportation costs, shipping delays, or customs fees. It also enables relief organizations to spend more time providing aid by spending less time managing goods."

Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild golf tournament fundraiser for cancer research

Thursday, August 17, 2017

Founded in 2006 by Lake Forest Park 6th graders in memory of their friend, Sydney Coxon, the Pink Polka Dots are a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild funding research to cure cancer.

Guild members selling hand made cards
at Third Place Commons market

You may have seen members selling handmade cards and gifts at the LFP Third Place Commons Holiday and Farmer’s Markets, or selling lemonade along the Burke Gilman trail this summer.

This year's tournament will be held at
Echo Falls golf course in Snohomish

The Pink Polka Dots also team up with local sponsors and the Coxon Family Foundation to host the Sydney Coxon Memorial, a fun afternoon of golf followed by an inspirational evening program, including dinner, a silent auction, and dessert. This year we will be hosting at a fabulous new venue, The Golf Club at Echo Falls, in Snohomish.

In eleven years, these philanthropic youngsters have raised over $850,000 to fund groundbreaking research for better treatments, and hopefully someday a cure, for pediatric brain tumors and many other cancers.

Members of the Pink Polka Dots Guilde

The Pink Polka Dots’ fundraising supports the work of Dr. Jim Olson at Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The funding has allowed researchers to develop exciting treatments including “tumor paint” which makes cancer cells glow for easier surgical removal, and a drug-delivery device which will increase efficacy and minimize side effects of chemotherapy treatment.

Dr. Olson’s latest effort, “Project Violet”, involves discovering and producing cancer-fighting optide drugs from natural sources, like flowers and insects.

Lemonade stand on the Burke Gilman Trail

Funding from Guilds and patient families is critical to researchers' ability to keep moving forward to save lives of children and adults with cancer, and potentially other diseases like Alzheimers and diabetes. To read more about the research and make a donation to the Pink Polka Dots, visit their website.

To Register for Golf and Dinner ($125 pp) or just the Dinner and Evening Program ($60 pp), or to Sponsor or Donate, go to the event site.

The Pink Polka Dots Jr Guild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Old Dog Haven’s 6th Annual Walk for Old Dogs a HUGE Success

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Well over 400 people and their dogs strutted their stuff at Old Dog Haven’s Walk for Old Dogs at Cromwell Park in Shoreline on July 23.

The Walk was a fundraiser hosted by Old Dog Haven and over $140,000 was raised by the event!

All of the money raised helps to pay veterinary expenses -- which average about $90,000 per month —for the over 300 senior dogs in Old Dog Haven’s care.

The top three fundraising teams and the top three individual fundraisers led the walk, flags held high as they balanced their prizes while holding leashes.

The top fundraising team — South Paws — raised $28,612 for the dogs and the top individual fundraiser — Peabody Johansen — raised $5,946.

Dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes and mobility enjoyed an afternoon in the park with the people who love them. They competed in contests, had free massages, nail trims, scarfed down goodies from the Seattle Barkery, socialized, met new friends, played in wading pools to keep cool and just loved being there.

Capt. Marvin piloted his way to a 1st Place
in the Costume category
Founders Judith and Lee Piper were recognized for fostering over 375 dogs during the past 13 years.

Foster parents are always needed. Go to the Old Dog Haven website for more information about fostering.

All dogs were eligible to enter contests in the Pageant, which produced winners in the categories of Best Costume, Best Trick, and Best Dancer. Prizes and ribbons were awarded to the top three winners in each category.

Gretchen Howell organized Dachshund Races to benefit Old Dog Haven.

Old Dog Haven is grateful to the community for supporting their efforts, including sponsors for the event, media contacts, people who donated prizes, volunteers, organizers, and everyone who helped make the day such a resounding success.
Paws up to all of you!

1,900 firefighters from eight countries participated in the 26th annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb at Seattle's Columbia Center on Sunday, March 12, 2017.

Firefighters ran and walked the 69 floors of stairs and 1,356 steps after raising money to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society which funds research and patient services for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.

Each participant had to raise at least $300 in order to participate. The teams raised money through sponsorships, individual and department fundraising, and entry fees.

This is the largest individual firefighter competition in the world.

The race was done in FULL structural firefighting gear: boots, pants, and coat (liners intact), helmet and gloves. Breathing apparatus was worn and USED every step of the course.

Top racers finish in as little as ten or eleven minutes, while the average participant takes about 20 to 30 minutes to finish.

Northshore Fire said "Great job to everyone that participated in the annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb this weekend and great job to our Firefighters."

Shoreline Fire had seven climbers.

"Mark Merlino had the fastest time up the 69 flights in all the gear (adding 50-70 extra pounds) in 14:47 minutes! Mike Mentzos, Keenan Miles, Moses Cochran, Terrance Lewis, Amanda Brassfield, and Justin Hansen."

Participants have until Friday to turn in the money they have raised, but all are hoping the event will surpass the $2.3 million the event raised in 2016.

The race results are here - fascinating to read for the places they come from and how many people they sent.

The Firefighter Stairclimb was started by Shoreline firefighter David Engler. Here's his story.
