Sunday, August 24, 2014

This is really what it's all about

Sunday, August 17, 2014 marked another finale to the week-long summer events that make Celebrate Shoreline! The weather was made to order and there was a stellar turn out at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park for the Sandcastle Contest.

These people are dedicated to their art

There were 20 contestants and well over a hundred on-lookers. Organizer Jack Malek said,
"There were some of the best sculptures we've seen with a sand-made row boat (Ken, Meg, and Ruby Beck), a shark week display with a hammer head (Mary, Sean and Wade) and a mermaid (Lilly Steinmetz and Mary Reidy)!"
The mermaid  took third place

Lilly's sculpture was the first ever performing art piece as she included herself into the sculpture, part sand/ part maid. The first place kids' award was taken by a group Fus Rotar (Cameron, Caillou, and Brenden).

1st place in the making - a row boat

Honorable mentions went to: Mateo's Team, Rana, McMorris Family, Mario Team, and the Friends Team.

The Islanders steel drum band

The Islanders Steel Drum Band kept the beach rockin' Jamaican Style... Ya man. Hope to see you again next year!!!

Beach to Bluff Bust Your Buns Run - fun in the fog and sun

75 runners and volunteers turned out for the run

The Inaugural Richmond Beach “Beach to Bluff Bust Your Buns Run” was a wild success! In the early morning hours of Aug. 17, nearly 75 brave souls turned out to volunteer or run the grueling two mile course.

Lamont "Running Man" Thomas
was Master of Ceremonies

It started at 8am with Lamont “Running Man” Thomas serving as Master of Ceremonies. With his words, “Let’s tackle that hill!” Lamont and Shoreline Mayor Shari Winstead led the group over the bridge, up the hill, out to the bluff and back down the stairs.

Dr. Jason Penaluna, left, was 2nd
Andrew Christianson was 1st

The race was quickly and easily won by Shorewood’s champion cross country runner Andrew Christianson who blew the competition away with a 10:24 time. Second place went to Dr. Jason Penaluna, a Richmond Beach runner, business owner and member of the inaugural “B2B” organizing committee.

Nathan Wilkinson, age 11, was winner
in the Kids Division

Other standouts included Tani Stenfjord, first place in the women’s group with at 13:31. Nathan Wilkinson (age 11) was the top Kids Division winner with 14:58. Participants described it as tough – a real leg burner – but promised to return next year.

Thanks to the volunteers!

Organizers want to thank members of the Richmond Beach Running Club who gave up the run to volunteer along the course, the Richmond Beach Community Association who paid for King County Sheriff’s Deputies and all the local businesses who donated gift certificates.

Organizers already have plans for next year

This is the first year for the event, which is an official part of Celebrate Shoreline. They tell us next year it will expand to a 5K, have fun t-shirts available and include a volunteer piano player to serenade runners as they make their way down the 188 stairs to the finish line.

Besides all this, there were opportunities for people to test their strength, buy books and find out what neighborhood they lived in from the Council of Neighborhood, buy a brick to honor a veteran from the American Legion booth, talk to police officers, get a balloon animal, eat a rainbow sno cone, play with bubbles, listen to live music performances, talk to political parties, talk to public schools representatives, and meet friends.

If you missed it, you'll have another opportunity at Shoreline's 20th Birthday, next year.

Sandcastle event - a day at the beach

It was a beautiful day on the beach
at Saltwater Park

If a Sandcastle Contest conjures up visions of giant trolls, medieval turreted castles, and other such realistic creations in sand - that's not how we roll in Shoreline.

Think instead of dozens of families descending on the beach to hang out, listen to the music, and maybe dig some sand into sometimes recognizable shapes.

Richmond Beach Neighborhood Association Board member Jack Malek provided these photos of a fun day at the beach.

The Sandcastle contest was the last event of the week-long Celebrate Shoreline and was held on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

The contest is a family activity

Duh-duh duh-duh

The serious ones brought shovels

The Islanders Steel Drum Band played

Northwest Family Chiropractic and Massage
sponsored the BBQ and donated proceeds to
the neighborhood organization

It gives a whole new meaning to
racing on the sand

But this is really what the day is all about
Families spending fun time together

Shoreline Parade - lack of interest, not lack of funds

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

The Drill Team is adorable, but there are few spectators to appreciate them

By Diane Hettrick

City officials were quick to point out that the Celebrate Shoreline parade is not being cancelled because of a lack of funds, but rather a lack of interest on the part of the public.

The parade takes a significant amount of staff work to stage, but fewer and fewer people have been attending over the past few years. Essentially it was greater effort and greater cost for decreasing returns.

The same amount of money is allocated for Celebrate Shoreline but it will be put into expanding and revitalizing the festival, rather than a parade.

According to Council Member Jesse Salomon,
"While the parade will be cancelled there will still be a major event, likely at Cromwell Park.  We are hoping to have more food vendors, music and have more of a festival atmosphere instead of a parade. You could think of it as a much more beefed up event than what we've had at Ridgecrest Elementary at the end of the parade line."

Civic leaders I spoke to were a bit shocked at how fast the decision was made, and the lack of public notice and input, but agreed with the reasoning. The City will continue to co-sponsor other public events during that time, such as ShoreDog's DogFest.

City discontinues Celebrate Shoreline Parade

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Corrected 1-23-2013 9:45pm
From the City of Shoreline

Celebrate Shoreline is the City’s week-long signature event held each August. Over the past 17 years Celebrate Shoreline has grown to include a DogFest at Hamlin Park, the North City Jazz Walk, a skateboard competition at Paramount Park, and the sandcastle building competition at Richmond Beach, in addition to the original parade and festival. These events have provided residents an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate what it means to live in Shoreline.

While many of the events are very well attended and even growing in popularity, like the North City Jazz Walk, parade participation has dropped by 38% over the last 6 years. This drop, combined with other factors such as Cromwell Park’s redesign completion, has led City Council to support staff in transitioning to a new event format for 2013.

The most visible changes to the event will be the discontinuation of the parade and the relocation of the festival from Ridgecrest Elementary to Cromwell Park. Releasing the parade to the annals of history will allow financial resources to be redirected to a revitalized festival. Council and staff are excited to move the festival to a central location in the City while having the opportunity to show off one of Shoreline’s newest parks.

Here comes the parade - here's how we Celebrated Shoreline

Sunday, August 26, 2012

There are parades and then there are parades. Giant regional parades like the SeaFair Torchlight Parade focus on elaborate mechanical and floral floats, so big they can hardly get around the corners.

Community parades like Greenwood seem to recall and celebrate small town America with cub scouts, Sweet Adeline's, and baton twirlers.

Shoreline Council of Neighborhoods representatives
Celebrate Shoreline - the celebration of Shoreline's birthday - certainly has some of these elements. But what it is more than anything is a walking organizational directory of Shoreline and the surrounding area. The parade celebrates Shoreline in a very unique way, by parading most all of the groups that make the City the vibrant place that it is.

Shorewood High School Cheer and Drill team
No one really cares whether the float is elaborate or beautiful. No one really cares whether there's a float at all, although the floats are appreciated for their community spirit and the involvement of the volunteers who created them. It could just as well be called the Volunteer Shoreline or the Send Your Kids to School in Shoreline parade.

32nd District state reps Ruth Kagi and Cindy Ryu
People care about seeing friends, neighbors, all the groups they belong to, the schools, bands, drill teams, politicians are welcome, both those in office and those running for office.

CORRECTION: Zander Natallanni.of Shoreline Community College
men's soccer team hands out strawberry candy along the parade route
Many of the youth sports groups were represented - Hillwood Soccer. Northlake Little League. Richmond Jr Football. Shoreline Community College men's soccer team handed out candy.

Cub Pack 850
A couple of scouts troops were there - some of the others were on camp-outs (article to come).

King County Sheriff's Motorcycle Unit

The motorcycle unit from the Sheriff's Office was there, rumbling down the street. Not to be outdone, the Fire Department brought their shiny red trucks, beloved of children everywhere.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band
The Northwest Junior Pipe Band showed off their new bagpipes.

The Shoreline Recreation youth programs were well-represented
Drill team (if you know where they are from, let us know)
The Cute Award, if it existed, would surely go to these young drill team members.

Is your group missing from this line-up? Let us know and either send your photo or we will use ours for Parade, Part 2.
