A microchip success story: Canopy Cat Rescue reunites lost cat with owner

Friday, September 4, 2020

Shaun Sears and Tom Otto, certified arborists, tree climbers, and cat lovers are Canopy Cat Rescue.

"CANOPY CAT RESCUE rescues cats — anytime, day or night, in all kinds of weather. We work on a donations-only basis, because it’s our mission and passion to rescue any cat stuck in any tree regardless of their families financial situation. We rescue A LOT of cats — hundreds every year from all over the state."

Many of the rescue photos are stories are posted on their Facebook page. Here's one about a Lake Forest Park cat.

By Shaun Sears

Another Microchip success story!

This is Lucy, from Lake Forest Park... but I didn’t know her name, until I got off the phone with the microchip company.

She had been out on a limb in a fir tree for about a day and the folks that found her, sounded the alarm on the Next Door site.

By the time I arrived, we had quite the audience!

In that audience was a family that had been missing their cat for about a year.

Everyone was hoping that this was indeed their cat, including myself. During the climb up to this sweet black kitty, I kept calling him by the missing cat’s name, because I always believe in miracles.

Once safely back on the ground, the family of the missing cat knew right away that this, unfortunately, was not their missing cat. The cat did have a microchip though, and after a quick call to the microchip company, I was given the cat’s owner’s info and HER name was Lucy.

Before calling Lucy’s owner, I went up to her in the cat carrier and apologized for calling her a sweet boy the whole rescue (and some strange name) she had probably never heard before.

Next step was to call Lucy’s owner. This is always a high anxiety moment because of all the “what if’s”.. What if they don’t answer? What if they’re at work? What if they think this is some type of scam??

Thankfully, the owner did answer right away... I was able to say, “Hello, this is Shaun with Canopy Cat Rescue, and I have great news! I have your kitty, Lucy, and she’s excited to come home!”. The owner’s let out a big sigh of relief and were so thankful!

Lucy is now back home with her family, telling them all about her adventure of getting lost, climbing a tree, getting put in a rescue sack, scanned for a chip, getting put in a carrier, and then her car ride home.

Make sure your cats are microchipped and that the info is up to date. We love happy stories like Lucy’s :)

Petco Foundation invests in lifesaving work of SAFe Rescue

Thursday, who went from shy cat to happy lap cat with help from the grant.

Grant of $9,000 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in the Puget Sound region

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) announced that it has been awarded a $9,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support the rehabilitation and adoption of cats with behavioral challenges.

The Petco Foundation investment will help SAFe Rescue to continue to develop its online adoption program, and to empower foster homes to help shy kitties in their care gain the confidence to interact with humans. (This program is more important than ever since the public health situation has made it necessary for most rescue felines to move out of SAFe’s facility into foster care.)

“Support from the PetCo Foundation is helping us continue to save feline lives, even as we adapt to the COVID-19 public health situation,” said Emily Sprong, Executive Director. “This grant is making it possible for SAFe Rescue to innovate, safely supporting foster families and the cats in their care!”

This grant investment is part of the Petco Foundation’s recent distribution of more than $13M to animal welfare organizations nationwide. In addition, the Petco Foundation distributed $1M in emergency product and cash donations to partner organizations facing the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis and put out a national call to mobilize animal lovers to take action and Pledge to Save Pet Lives.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue is a nonprofit organization that takes in homeless felines from the Puget Sound region and beyond and finds them loving families. Seattle Area Feline Rescue opened its Shoreline Adoption Center in 2014 and has since grown to be one of the largest feline-specific rescues in the country.

Last year, SAFe Rescue found homes for 2,018 cats and kittens.

Over 1,700 felines, including seniors and special needs cats, find homes here each year as people in search of new friends visit our welcoming storefront Adoption Center. An extensive network of community volunteers and foster families helps the rescue carry out its mission and save more lives.

At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life. Since 1999, we’ve invested more than $280 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen.

Bored? Love cats?

Monday, March 30, 2020

Lily is of the 'get me outta here" variety
For the cat-lovers who are starting to get bored staying at home: On Facebook, go to Canopy Cat Rescue and watch a daring arborist rescue cats from the tops of 50 foot trees.

Shaun and his partner rescue cats - who have no trouble climbing up a tree but don't know how to climb down - from the tops of swaying trees.

Shaun posts a video of every rescue and a nice portrait of the cat.

Some are screaming (get me outta here!), some are blasé (I meant to do this ... yes, for three days).

Shaun and his partner are arborists by trade - hence the tree climbing ability and equipment - and cat rescuers in their spare time.

They go all over Puget Sound and only ask for donations for their services.

Local Cat who survived cruelty to be featured on Kitten Bowl VII Sunday

“Courage” overcame abuse to find a happy home in Seattle

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) announced that the inspiring story of Courage, a cat who came to the Rescue in 2018 after an unknown attacker cut off her ears and tail, will be featured this Sunday, February 2, 2020 on the Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl VII.

Courage used to live outdoors in Eastern Washington on the property of a senior gentleman, until one day she disappeared. A few days later, Courage reappeared, but her caretaker saw that she was bleeding: someone had cut off her ears and tail.

He never found out who hurt her, and he treated her injuries as best he could. Eventually the wounds closed, and Courage carried on. As time passed, Courage’s elderly guardian was no longer able to care for the cats on his property. Courage came to SAFe Rescue for a second chance. She was ill with a respiratory infection and various other health conditions, and she needed medical treatment and multiple surgeries to recover.

After she was strong enough to find a home, Courage was adopted by a Seattle family. (Her adopter posts regular updates about her happy new life on Courage’s Instagram account

Courage’s journey to a happy home has been documented by the Hallmark Channel and will be aired as a pre-recorded feature during the Kitten Bowl broadcast.

“Courage’s transformation from abused to loved is truly an inspiration; Courage shows us that the kindness of our community is much stronger than one person’s cruelty,” said Shelley Lawson, Development and Communications Director at SAFe Rescue and foster mom to Courage during her recovery.

You have posted articles about Canopy Cat Rescue in 2016, 2017, (and 2017 again) and 2018. See below.

Perhaps you would like a 2019 version from LFP, on 10/3/19. It is about the rescue of Sylvester, a very young, sweet and friendly kitty.

Shaun Sears climbed 50 feet up a challenging Golden Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia,' as two Eagles circled above.

Shaun nears Sylvester
The overnight rain had stopped, so that must have been Eagle drool dropping down through the tree. This cat belongs to our neighbor, while the tree is in our yard.

Shaun says that there were 500 cat rescues in Washington in 2018. They are on a pace to make 540 rescues in 2019.

Shaun believes that all cats deserve to be rescued and reunited with their loved ones. Canopy Cat Rescue works on a donations-only basis, because it’s their mission and passion to rescue any cat stuck in any tree regardless of their families financial situation.

This is a 501 c-3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. It would be a fine cause for cat lovers, or any animal lovers, to consider for supporting.

General admission tickets range between $15 for children's admission to $40 for a two-day adult pass, and they can be purchased at www.seameowcon.com.

Attendees who make the trek to the mecca of cat people can expect a furbulous festival that includes such purrfections as:

Petco Foundation grants $20,000 to Shoreline's Seattle Area Feline Rescue

Thursday, June 27, 2019

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) announced it has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its foster program by training and recruiting foster volunteers that can provide temporary shelter for homeless cats and kittens.

The Petco Foundation investment will help save more lives by making it possible to grow and strengthen SAFe Rescue’s foster volunteer program.

By further recruiting, training, and supporting fosters, the rescue can empower them to have a bigger impact for the most at-risk populations of cats.

“We know that developing and expanding our foster program is key to our continued growth, and we are deeply thankful that support from the Petco Foundation allows us to give these incredibly important volunteers the support and training they need to sustain this lifesaving work,” said Emily Sprong, Executive Director at SAFe Rescue.

Last year, SAFe Rescue found homes for 1,740 cats and kittens.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill organization located on the border of Seattle and Shoreline, at 14717 Aurora Ave. N, Shoreline 98133. (501c3 #91-2041961.)

SAFe Rescue takes in homeless cats and kittens, gives them the care they need to recover, and finds them loving homes.

Since 1999, we’ve invested more than $250 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen.

With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives.

Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than six million pets find their new loving families, and we’re just getting started.

Cat uses 7 of 9 lives with 50 day stay in chimney

Saturday, June 8, 2019

Royal is happy at home with his people

By Diane Hettrick

A local cat named Royal used up seven of his nine lives after being stuck in a neighbor's chimney for 50 days.

Here's the timeline:
  • Laura King says "Royal first went missing on April 13. We remember that date because it was the one year anniversary of us getting our two cats. Our girls were planning a little party, but that didn't happen for obvious reasons."
  • April Macdonald started hearing noises from her fireplace about three days later.
  • Kevin from Sound Chimneys pulled out the fireplace insert on June 3.
  • April contacted the Kings on June 4

On April 16, Laura and Jared King posted a notice on Nextdoor:
Lost our Black Cat, Royal. Hey Everyone, We live on 185th close to Corliss. Our black short-haired male cat has been lost for about 3 days now. He doesn't usually go far from home and is always back to eat. If you have any information about a black cat we would love to talk with you. Our kids are pretty upset. Thanks for your help.

They put up flyers around the neighborhood.

Extremely heavy fireplace insert

Meanwhile, down the street, April Macdonald was hearing noises.
Around 48 days ago I swear I heard a cat meowing in my fireplace. It's a very heavy metal fireplace, inserted into the wall. It hasn’t been used for like 20+ years.
When I heard what sounded like a cat, I opened the front of the fireplace but heard nothing. I kept looking. I went outside and heard nothing. The sound went away so I thought maybe it was one of my four cats.
For the next week or so I kept hearing the noise and would grab all my family members (kids, husband, mom, and anyone who would come over) and ask them to listen. Some heard - some did not.
Moving forward, about 20 days passed and I still heard it. I went on the roof and took pictures down my huge chimney. I had to tiptoe to put my phone up to see and almost lost the phone - but nothing.
I went to the fire department. Fire chief came out -  nothing. Called an exterminator. Exterminator came out - nothing.
45 days later: Monday night at around 8pm we heard a huge thud and a cat distinctively meowing. We opened up the fireplace and went outside - nothing.
The noise was stronger then ever. Called 911, fire department, cat in a tree complaint, and like four chimney companies to find help. No one could assist me.
I, along with my husband and mother, was feeling helpless. As I talked to the cat, my mom did a google search and found this company. She called at like 9:42pm and a gentleman answered. My mom told him what was going on and reassured him it wasn’t a prank, that we needed help!!!!!!!
Kevin from Sound Chimneys and Masonry was in bed but jumped up to come to the rescue. He was at our place by 10pm ready to do what he could.
Inside the house, he pulled the fireplace insert out of the wall. My husband helped hold it up so I could grab the black kitty who was behind the fireplace
We were all so excited and shocked that the little boy was still alive. He started to purr the moment I grabbed him. Kevin put our fireplace back. If it wasn’t for his kindness and quick decision to help at such a late hour I don’t want to think of what could have happened.
This company is now our chimney company from here on out and I am referring everyone and anyone who want kind, quick, and friendly service to this company. We are forever in your debt for your kindness Kevin. Thank you!!

Royal was so happy to be out of the chimney that
being at the vet was no issue at all.

We also want to say a big thank you to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital. If it wasn’t for their quick action to help what at first was thought of as a stray who knows what could of happened.

April saw a battered flyer

Once April knew what the cat looked like, she paid attention to the flyers in the neighborhood. The next day she saw a battered flyer about a lost cat - with a photo of a sleek, short haired black cat.

She called immediately and the hopeful owners headed for the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital on Aurora.
Laura King says that when her husband Jared first went to the vet and the cat was confirmed to be Royal, they let Jared hold him and Royal immediately began purring and rubbing his head on Jared. The vet said Royal had not done anything like that before that point.

"Amazingly," said Jared King, "he's alive. It will be a few weeks of recovery for him, but he's home safe. Thanks for all the help over the last several weeks."

The chimney is extremely tall
So how did Royal end up down the chimney? And how did he survive for 50 days without food and water? The humans have theories but only Royal knows what really happened.

The only way he could have ended up behind the fireplace insert was to come down the chimney. The chimney is extremely tall. April had to stand on tiptoe and reach her arms high just to get a picture of inside the chimney.

Royal had to get on the roof first and then make a very big jump to the chimney opening.

As for 50 days without food or water, Laura King says "But two factors we can know that I think helped him was his youth (he's less than 18m old) and his size. He was a really big cat, and his heftiness may have helped save him."

Everyone, including Royal, is just thrilled that he is safe at home and recovering from his ordeal.
Laura says, "His recovery has been steady ever since. He is getting around the house well, though he wants to be held most of the time (which was always his personality), and the kids are, of course, eager to accommodate him in this."

April says, "When I messaged the owner yesterday he sent me a pic of his kids with Royal and it was the best feeling knowing they were all reunited!!"

Pet safety tips for Halloween from Seattle Humane

Seattle Humane shares tips to help keep furry family members safe

Halloween can be a festive and fun time of year for children and families, but for pets, it can be stressful and even dangerous. Seattle Humane provides these tips to help keep your furry family members safe:

KEEP PET COSTUMES SAFE
Costumes that impair your pet’s vision, hearing, or mobility, or costumes that are too tight or too loose can be uncomfortable for your pet. The elastic in costumes can restrict circulation, loose-fitting costumes can become tangled and small, dangling pieces can create a choking hazard. Make sure that your pet has as much fun playing dress up as you do. A decorative collar is always a great alternative!

• KEEP YOUR PET INSIDE
Keep your companion animals in a room away from the front door when trick-or-treaters are visiting. It is too easy for them to be frightened by the goblins and slip out the door.

• UPDATE IDENTIFICATION
This is the perfect time to make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing up-to-date identification. Most veterinarians and shelters offer microchipping. If your pet is already microchipped, be sure the company has your current address and phone numbers.
**Walk-in appointments available daily from 2-4 p.m. for microchipping in Seattle Humane's veterinary clinic.

• FEED TREATS MADE FOR PETS
Chocolate and other seemingly harmless ingredients can be poisonous to dogs and cats, so keep them out of reach. Dispose of the wrappers where pets can’t get to them to avoid choking and explain to your children why Fluffy can’t share their treats.

• DECORATE WITH CAUTION
Tail wagging is a good thing – unless it’s done around a lit candle! Keep candles and lit jack-o-lanterns at a height where your pets can’t knock them over or get burned. By following these helpful tips, Halloween can be a fun and safe holiday for pets and people alike.

• BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES
Be prepared in case your pet ingests chocolate or xylitol-sweetened candy. Know the nearest emergency animal hospital. Contact the ASPCA Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 for immediate help.

Animal Medical Center of Seattle (AMCS) (in Shoreline!) is a fully staffed, veterinarian owned, 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital located in Shoreline at 14810 15th Avenue NE, Suite B, Shoreline 98155.

Phone 206-204-3366 to give them a heads-up that you are coming and what the problem is.

Seattle Humane Seniors for Seniors week - Pet Guardian Program

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Looking for a mature, easy-going pet to match your lifestyle? In honor of Senior Citizens Day on August 26, Seattle Humane is waiving adoption fees on all senior pets ages 7 and up, for people ages 60 and up, all week long!

While senior pets may not be as active as their younger counterparts, they offer plenty of love and appreciation. With their relaxed temperament, senior pets make perfect relaxation buddies! Come by Seattle Humane August 20-26 to find your perfect match. See adoptable pets here.

Many seniors hold off on getting a pet because they are worried about who will care for them if they can’t.

Seattle Humane’s Pet Guardian Program provides a service for those who wish to entrust their companion animals to the organization in the event of their incapacity or death. An individual or family can enroll as members in the program.

This membership covers up to five cats, dogs and small critters; remains in effect during the lifetime of the enrollee; and includes any animals they own at the time. Click here to learn more about Seattle Humane’s Pet Guardian Program and planned legacy opportunities.

Seattle Humane is located in Bellevue at 13212 SE Eastgate Way near the junction of I-90 and I-405. Seattle Humane is open seven days a week, from 11am to 8pm Thursday - Saturday, and 11am to 6pm Sunday - Wednesday.

All Seattle Humane pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated.
