Ronnie's story: When your cat is stuck in a tree - call Canopy Cat Rescue

Thursday, August 17, 2017

Ronnie spent 11 hours in a tree in Lake Forest Park

By Cyndi Jewett

Ronnie is a black and white male cat with a tuxedo front and a mustache. I always say "No one is a bigger fan of Ronnie then Ronnie". He is a sweet loving talkative boy who loves treats and walks around like he owns the place.

My 19 year old daughter always makes sure he is in the night and when she still didn't see him at 2am she went outside to call for him and shake his treats. She heard his meow and went to see where he was and found him way up in a tree near our home in Lake Forest Park.

I was at a loss as to what to do, scared for Ronnie and my daughter was panicking. My first thought was the fire department (like in the tv shows), but that isn't a reality as I quickly learned. I called the non-emergency police line and they had no idea where to send me.

I called two emergency vet hospitals and they had no helpful information. This was all before 3am. I decided to leave a voicemail mail for my vet and PAWS to call me in the morning when they opened.

I thought about trying to find someone with a ladder and getting him down myself, but realized that was not a safe option for me, but really had no idea of what to do.

My vet called me first and they suggested shaking treats or opening a can of tune, but I explained there was no way for him to get down by himself, which CCR later confirmed. They had no other options they could offer me.

PAWS called and they gave me the number to Canopy Cat Rescue!!!!!! I was thrilled! I thought there was no help for Ronnie. He was scared and the crows were surrounding him, not happy he was in their tree. I called Shaun at CCR at 8am and he had Ronnie out of the tree by 10:30am. We think Ronnie was in the tree for about 12 hours.

We were told by CCR that they believe he was chased up the tree by another animal, possibly a coyote.

I am doing my best to spread the word, so everyone knows about CCR. They offer an invaluable service that anyone can afford since it is by donation. They suggest $75 to $100, but will take more or less. They believe every cat deserves to be helped getting down from a tree. We as cat owners couldn't agree more. I was happy to donate $100, which is well worth it for their service. Imagine the vet bills if he would have fallen or the medical bills if I would have tried to rescue him...

Canopy Cat Rescue is two brothers-in-law, Shaun Sears and Tom Otto. They are arborists who love cats. They have no problem climbing up 75 feet into a swaying tree to sweet talk a terrified cat into a rescue net.

They rescue treed cats all over Puget Sound. In the last week they have been on Camano Island, Key Peninsula, Renton, Redmond, West Seattle, Renton, Auburn, and Port Ludlow. They average about 400 cats a year, but they have already broken that record this year.

And they have a day job, as arborists specializing in habitat creation and monitoring in tree canopies.

Cats: Gigi isn't really a tough girl

Monday, July 17, 2017

Gigi is just putting up a front

"I know that when my special family or person meets me, they will look past my tough girl attitude and see me for who I really I am; sweet and just wanting affection and love.

"Right off the bat, I can be a little standoffish. But I don't mean to be, I honestly just don't like change very much and I am having a hard time adjusting in the shelter environment.

"My future family needs to be a little bit patient with me while I get adjusted because I take a little bit longer than your average kitty.

"But once I have settled down into my new home, I am so affectionate and will love cheek rubs forever. Oh! And I love food.... Like, a lot... So feed me, and I am yours forever!!"

Sadly, Baldwin and Ghost still need homes...

Canopy Cat Rescue gets Shoreline cat out of tree - with no harm to the rescuer

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

Chirpa's ear is laid back so flat that you can't see it
She's terrified of being stuck in the tree
and she's terrified of the stranger in the tree
Shaun Sears and Tom Otto have an unusual business model.

They work on-call, 24/7, all over central Puget Sound, and they let their customers' owners decide how much to pay them.

Shaun and Tom are cat-loving arborists. As Canopy Cat Rescue, their business is getting cats out of trees.

This week they made rescues in Shoreline and Kenmore.

"For the most part," said Shaun, "the cats we rescue are very happy to see us, but sometimes ... they want to Kill Us!!"
"That was certainly the case with Chirpa from Shoreline.
"She was described as being just a little "standoffish", but not crazy. When I approached her in the tree, she was in straight up ATTACK-mode.
"This didn't change how much love and compassion I put into her rescue because I understood she was very stressed and scared ... so I didn't take it personally.
"Thankfully, I was able to get her down with my face still attached."

Shaun takes photos or short videos of every rescue and posts them on the Canopy Cat Rescue Facebook page.

Shaun and a rather startled Zuzu
Now Zuzu, from Kenmore, was much calmer - until she was just really surprised to see herself in the phone before Shaun took the photo.

Background

We created CANOPY CAT RESCUE in 2009 after discovering how very difficult it was for people to find help for their cats stuck high in trees.

As cat people ourselves, we know how horrible it feels when a cat is missing and then cries for help are heard high up in a tree.

Cold, hungry, scared, tired, and dehydrated; many cats unfortunately suffer each year after being stuck in trees.

That is why CANOPY CAT RESCUE rescues cats — anytime, day or night, in all kinds of weather.

All cats deserve to be rescued and reunited with their loved ones. We work on a donations-only basis, because it’s our mission and passion to rescue any cat stuck in any tree regardless of their families financial situation.

We rescue A LOT of cats — hundreds every year from all over the state.

Fourth of July: not a pet's favorite holiday

Monday, June 26, 2017

Scared of fireworks
Fireworks are beautiful to look at, but they can be scary for our pets. The bangs and booms are hard on their sensitive hearing, and even the calmest pet can get upset by the unfamiliar loud noises.

To help your pet cope with the noise from fireworks, and reduce the chance that it runs away, Regional Animal Services of King County offers these tips:

  1. Keep your pet secured indoors in the quietest room of your home while fireworks are going off. You can also use soothing music or television as a distraction. Some pets will stay calmer when placed in a secure crate in a darkened, quiet room.
  2. If your pet is normally kept outside, bring them inside or put them in a well-ventilated garage or shed or in a basement during fireworks displays.
  3. Make sure your pet is licensed and has an ID tag or microchip. Pets with ID have a much greater chance of being returned to their owners.
  4. Don't assume that your pet won't react just because you haven't had problems in the past. Sometimes, pets become sensitive to loud noises later in life.

If your pet is lost, check in person at PAWS and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.

PAWS shelters strays from Brier, Edmonds, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Shoreline and Woodinville.
If your pet is not at PAWS, please keep coming back. Your pet may arrive the next day or the next week, and since many animals look alike we cannot guarantee we will be able to match a completed lost report with your pet. Your chances of finding your pet increase if you return to the shelter on a regular basis.

Here's PAWS information for missing pets

Cats: Ghost with Fangs

Monday, June 19, 2017

Best fangs ever!

Who is grey, adorable, and has the best fangs you've ever seen in your life?

Ghost of course! Ghost is 8 years old, and is probably the most cuddly kitty you've ever met.

And did we mention that he has fangs? That's right, fangs that constantly stick out of his mouth that Count Dracula himself would be jealous of.

Ghost was surrendered to SAFe Rescue back in February where he has been receiving the medical care he needs (subcutaneous fluids everyday, and a special diet) and now he is ready to steal your heart and make his way into your home.

He will still need those subcutaneous fluids every day (for kidney problems) but he takes them well and his favorite thing to do afterwards is cuddle.

The staff at the rescue nicknamed him "Ghosty Whosty Cinnamon Toasty" because he is sweet like cinnamon and will you keep you all warm and toasty on those cold Seattle nights.

Meet Ghost at Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline, 14717 Aurora Ave N, 98133. 206-659-6220.

Cats: Have a Heart - Corazon needs a furrever home

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Corazon, born 10-30-2014

Corazon means "heart" in Spanish, and he is a real sweetheart. Corazon was transferred to Seattle Area Feline Rescue from Seattle Animal Shelter, and went home with a family shortly after he got here.

When he went home his family spent time with him and absolutely fell in love. They say that he is an exceptionally sweet and playful cat with a lot of love and attention to give.

After a bit they noticed that he was having some trouble adjusting to their house, and felt that he was not happy. They have another kitty, and just felt like Corazon was having a hard time adjusting to his new situation.

So they returned him back to SAFe so that he could find a home that could give all the love and attention he needs and deserves (direct quote from his former family). He just needs a second shot at a furrever home, and would be an excellent addition to anybody's life.

To learn more about Corazon, or to set up a time to meet him, email Seattle Area Feline Rescue.

Heat is back on at Spartan Gym - just in time for Average Joe Cat Show

Friday, May 5, 2017

The parts came in and were installed at the Spartan Gym, so the full heating unit could be turned on again.

The heat was off after a gas leak closed the building for a few day. Part of the heating unit was up and running within an hour, but the lobby and two of the rooms had to wait for the installation of replacement parts.

The repairs came just in time for Saturday's Average Joe Cat Show, 10am to 3pm, where regular cats show their quirks and charm in a benefit for the Purrfect Pals pet shelter.

The show has such competitions as "Biggest Cat in Smallest Box" - and there will be kitties there for adoption, as well.

And it will be warm in the building.

Spartan Recreation Center, between the Shoreline Center and Shoreline Stadium, 202 NE 185th St, Shoreline 98155.

Cats: Handsome Baldwin would like to be the only cat in your life

Handsome Baldwin is shy in group settings

"My name is Baldwin, and I am located in foster care with the Seattle Area Feline Rescue. I am definitely a distinguished gentleman, and I know it.

When I first got to the rescue (before I went into foster care with my lovely foster mom), I was extremely scared and shy. I didn't know what was going on, or where my family went. I was told that my mom had to leave me in the care of SAFe Rescue because of some housing situation, and she was very very sad about it.

Since being at the rescue, I noticed that I kept getting passed over by younger, less scared kitties. But I was trying really hard to show the humans that I wanted to go home to my forever home, but I was just too scared and didn't understand what was going on. So that's why the nice people at SAFe placed me in a foster home.

But enough with the sad stuff, you probably want to know a little bit about me! I am 8 years old (still young, people!) with an affectionate and cuddly disposition when I am comfortable with the right person. That's another thing, my former mom said that I tend to bond really strongly with one person. So I would be a great companion kitty, and would make anyone so happy to come home to.

One more thing before I go, I am FIV+ but please don't let that scare you away. I will live a long, healthy life just like any other kitty but I am just a little immune comprised and I will need to be indoors my whole life.

Please come and meet me and give me a second chance at a forever home!"

Baldwin is located in a foster home so if you would like to set up a meet with him, just email

Cats: the busiest kitty you'll ever meet

Saturday, April 8, 2017

Rylie was busy with his toy, but stopped to stand on his back legs
and peer around the corner to see if staff were doing something more interesting.

My name is Rylie, and I am here at SAFe Rescue waiting for my new family.

Not very patiently, I might add.

I am probably the busiest kitty you'll ever meet. I never stay in the same spot because I am busy attending business meetings and making sure everyone is doing their job, you know, normal cat stuff.

But don't let my talkative, business oriented mind fool you. I am actually very loving, and affectionate. I also love human children!

So if you let me into your home, your human kids will be my best buddies!

Everyone here at the rescue says I have a really cute round face, but I think it makes me look distinguished.

Come meet me and fall in love!

You can find me at the Seattle Area Feline Rescue, 14717 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Adoption Hours

Friday: 12 to 7 PM
Saturday: 12 to 7 PM

Cats: Edgar has sad eyes

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Edgar's sad eyes tell how many times
humans have let him down

Edgar is a cautious cat — at some point in his past he stopped trusting humans to be kind and retreated into himself. Somewhere inside, though, there’s a playful happy guy waiting to come out.

Edgar is an explorer who loves to climb and he has a big weakness for catnip. Watching him roll around in the nip is sure to make you laugh! He’s also a creative hider who disappears into unexpected nooks and crannies. Edgar’s foster family says that he’s quite a character who keeps them entertained.

Edgar is waiting for someone who is patient and kind, someone who will love him and give him the time he needs to come out of his shell. That special person will be the one who turns his life around and heals his heart. Could that person be you?

Visit Seattle Feline Rescue to learn more about adopting, or email to set up an appointment to meet Edgar, who is currently in foster care. Edgar is 9 years young, and will be happiest in a home where he can be the only cat. He used to live with a dog. He still misses his canine buddy, so we think he’d do very well with dogs!

UPDATE: Cats: The most interesting cat in the world

Akando has swagger and style
K.A.Moore photography

UPDATE: Akando was adopted! 2-14-2017

Akando might just be the most interesting cat in the world.

Look into those deep, dreamy eyes -- there is a story to tell, one that is purrfect for a long night in, cuddled up under the covers. A fire roaring beside you, and a handsome companion. Akando promises to be all that and more.

Raised on the streets, Akando is what we like to a call a “community cat.” At four years young, it’s possible Akando has been homeless his whole life, although you wouldn’t know that by his swagger and style.

Akando gets along with kids and dogs. Other cats would depend on the situation since Akando has FIV - although don’t let that fool you since he will live a long and healthy life with the proper care! Akando promises to provide you with endless stories and it the perfect binge-watching buddy. He loves his cuddles and play time, too.

Are you intrigued yet? Ready to meet this cool cat and make him a part of your forever family? Akando is with Seattle Area Feline Rescue--contact them today!

UPDATE: Cats: Special Needs kitty looking for a special home

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

What's not to love about that face?
BB needs a special owner

UPDATE: 2-10-2017  BB found a home! Her family said that once they met her they just couldn't imagine life without her. We hear that she's doing very well with her new people.

-----

BB is a friendly little kitty with a big heart and a strong spirit! Because she was born with splayed back legs, BB can’t walk the same way as the other kitties. She would not have survived for long in the dangerous outside world as a wild kitten. Thankfully, BB came to Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline for a second chance!

BB quickly showed everyone at the Rescue what a strong, determined spirit she has. She learned to move across the floor of her foster home and climb up and down the cat tree there. She learned to swim during physical therapy sessions. She even figured out how to use her front paws to do handstands like a tiny gymnast!

Could you be the special person BB is waiting for, the one who gives her a home? She has so much love waiting to give you! BB’s disability doesn’t bother her or slow her down — all she needs now is someone to care for her and love her just the way she is.

BB is currently in a foster home in the Shoreline area. To learn more about BB, or to set up a time to meet her, email adoptions@SeattleAreaFelineRescue.org

Cats: Luna needs TLC from an experienced cat owner UPDATE

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

Luna

“Can I be your kitty, pretty please? I want to have my own family, my own toys, my very own person ...  Being alone is no fun for a social girl like me!"

2-year-old Luna has beautiful white fur and a soft pink nose. She is social and friendly and loves to be around people!

We don’t know what her past may have been, but something happened to her that left her wary of men. When she first arrived at the rescue, Luna seemed overwhelmed and upset by change.

Now she is starting to relax, and has even let several men pet her.

Luna will be happiest with an experienced cat owner who can help her relax and learn gentle play habits. If you give this gorgeous kitty a chance, she'll reward you with absolute loyalty and lots of purrs!

Luna is currently available for adoption at Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline, 14717 Aurora Ave N.

UPDATE: Luna was adopted by a family, and now she has a new human brother to play with.

ADOPTED: Cats: Ishtar is a unique beauty with a sweet disposition

Ishtar needs a forever home

UPDATE: Ishtar has been adopted! She now has an owner, a pillow to sleep on, someone to pet her and to answer when she talks!

Ishtar is a beauty with unusual black and gray muted stripes. In spite of being a favorite of the shelter staff, she has not been good at selling herself to adoptive families and sadly, has been overlooked.

"The best part of the day is bedtime, because that's when I get to cuddle up next to my human! It's lonely sleeping all by myself with nobody to call me their special kitty .... Maybe your pillow has room for a friendly kitty like me?"

12 year old Ishtar is a sweet, talkative girl with gorgeous smokey fur. Her favorite activities are lounging and rolling over for pets.

Ishtar is waiting for you at Seattle Area Feline Rescue, 14717 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133.
