Chubby cat discount at Seattle Humane

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Start the New Year off on the right paw with Seattle Humane's Chubby Cat Discounts! We're offering a $1.00 per pound discount off all cats one year and up to encourage our animal loving community to welcome a furry workout buddy into their hearts and home in January.

Here's how it works- if an adoptable kitty who is one year or older weighs 15 lbs., you'll get $15.00 off their $25.00 adoption fee - that's unconditional love for just $10.00!

Many cats are surrendered to shelters overweight. Seattle Humane works hard to get unhealthy pets back in shape with a nutritious diet and daily exercise, but nothing compares to the care of a loving home environment.

Browse through our adoptable cats now or, better yet, come visit them in person at 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue. We're open seven days a week, from 11am to 6pm Sunday through Wednesday and 11am to 8pm Thursday through Saturday.

Cat (and poem) of the Week

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Ody is ready for adoption
Image is by K.A.Moore Photography

Catrobatic
By Cynthia Sheridan

Funny how cats love an empty box
A window sill or a narrow walk
Creeping out on the weakest branch
Never afraid to take a chance

Consider the feline, svelte and lean
Wedging her body in between
An airless nook, a teensy crack
Or scampering about in an empty sack

Such catrobatic tricks of trade
With seemingly little effort made
I wonder what game her mind must play
Only a cat could act that way

Not exactly "svelt and lean" at 17 pounds, Ody is a friendly and playful 3 year old boy who would do well in a family with kids.

Ody is waiting for you at Seattle Area Feline Rescue, 14717 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.
  • Monday, Tuesday, Friday, 2-8pm
  • Saturday/Sundays noon to 6 pm.
  • Closed Wednesday, Thursday

PAWS rescues 33 cats from Shoreline hoarder

Friday, July 25, 2014

From our news partner Lynnwood Today

When 33 cats needed help, PAWS was there to answer the call.

Late last week, PAWS took in 33 cats, who were rescued from a hoarder’s home in Shoreline. Seventeen more are set to arrive next week.

In the first large group, PAWS discovered two mother cats with newborns. There was also a group of 6 month old kittens, along with teenage and adult cats.

All cats have been given thorough health checks. PAWS staff reports they are eating well, using litter boxes, and opening up to human interaction despite their initial nervousness towards people.

“PAWS staff and volunteers are trained to handle all types of animals when they arrive at PAWS,” said Kay Joubert, Director of Companion Animal Services at PAWS. “These little guys have lived through a tumultuous time so we got to work instantly on their rehabilitation.”
Noting the animals’ resilience, Joubert said, “They softened very quickly to human kindness and now they’re opening up and showing more personality and affection every day.”

Many of the felines are now available for adoption. Interested new pet parents are encouraged to seek out Misty, a four-year old female, Jacob, a 10-month old male and Kale, a 2-year old male.

More cats will be added to the ‘ready for adoption’ list as they recover and are ready to find their new forever home. Due to the influx of new animals as well as the arrival of more next week, PAWS is seeking help from the community.

The organization needs residents to step up and become foster parents to temporarily house one of these special felines. Interested parties can find out details about fostering by calling 425-787-2500, ex 822. Information on fostering here.

PAWS – Progressive Animal Welfare Society - provides shelter service for both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The shelter is located in Lynnwood. 425-787-2500.

If you lost your pet during the fireworks...

Saturday, July 5, 2014

If your pet is lost, check in person at all local shelters, and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.

PAWS in Lynnwood provides shelter services for both Lake Forest Park and Shoreline, so if your pet was found in these cities, check withe PAWS.

Here is the "Lost a Pet?" information from their webpage:
  • Begin your search as soon as you realize your pet is missing, and visit the Missing Pet Partnership for specific strategies on how to find lost cats and lost dogs.
  • Visit PAWS. 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98087, Tel 425-787-2500, Fax 425-742-5711.
  • Check out the following pet list to see if your lost pet has already arrived at PAWS. If they are at the shelter, be prepared for the reclaiming process when you arrive at the shelter.
  • If your pet has a microchip, contact the microchip company to make sure your pet’s registration is up-to-date with current phone numbers and contact information. Some microchip companies take lost reports over the phone. If you are not sure of the microchip brand, contact the veterinary clinic or shelter where your pet was microchipped, or visit petmicrochip.org.
Next steps from PAWS:
  • For lost cats, consider renting a humane trap as many displaced cats have not gone far from their homes. Fewer than 7% of cats who come into the shelter are reunited with their families, but more than 50% of lost cats are found by their own families when they use humane traps and other methods described on the Missing Pet Partnership website.
  • Submit a “lost report” on animal related or social websites like Craig’s List.

PAWS waives adoption fee for Senior Cats

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

Washingtonians responded with open arms to PAWS’ June challenge to consider cats as ideal companions.

June 30 marked the conclusion of the American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Cat Month initiative that PAWS joined in June. As a participant in the national campaign, PAWS offered adoption fees waived on Thursdays for every cat over three years of age.

“Adopt-a-cat-month was a hit with animal lovers!” said Steph Renaud, PAWS’ Cat City Supervisor, “This month, we found happy new forever homes for 28 adult cats, many of them 10 years or older, from both our popular U-District’s Cat City and our Lynnwood Companion Animal Services Shelter.”

PAWS Cat City also hosted a sold out ‘Cat Behavior 101’ class which informed locals on this often under-represented companion animals’ many adorable traits.

“There’s no doubt that when it comes to adoptable pets, dogs do get the majority of the attention.” Ms. Renaud said, “But we’ve seen firsthand how cats play a very important role in many families in the region.”

PAWS is extending its fee-waived initiative on cats 10 years and older throughout the summer at both the Companion Animal Shelter in Lynnwood, WA and Cat City in Seattle’s University District.

PAWS is a champion for animals–rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating people to make a better world for animals and people.

"Get digital" with King County pet licenses in trial program

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Pilot program with PetHub provides tags that can be scanned with mobile devices

For a limited time, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) is offering a new type of pet license tag in partnership with PetHub. The license is printed with a QR (Quick Response) code that can be scanned with a smartphone or other mobile device to retrieve the animal's online profile. This can help stray pets and their owners get reunited much sooner.

"A license is an inexpensive way to provide peace of mind if your pet ever gets lost, and a digital pet license provides an additional level of protection," said RASKC Manager Dr. Gene Mueller. "Ninety-six percent of animals returned through PetHub are home in less than a day, before they even enter a shelter."

Tom Arnold, Founder of PetHub.com, said, "Our goal is to get a lost dog or cat home before it can become injured through fights with other animals, taken in by strangers thinking the pet is homeless, or enter a shelter."

Digital pet licenses are the same price as the standard RASKC license: $30 a year for spayed or neutered cats and dogs, or $60 a year for unaltered pets. Digital licenses are only available for purchase online or by calling 206-296-2712.

500 PetHub digital license tags have been set aside for this trial program, and the offer will end when supplies run out. Only cats and dogs living in the RASKC service area (including Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore) are eligible for this special offer. At the end of this trial program, RASKC and PetHub will evaluate the response from pet owners to see if digital license tags will become a permanent offering in King County.

PetHub's system links the physical ID tag to an animal's online profile that can be safely accessed by anyone with a mobile device, whether a smartphone or standard cellular phone. That profile can be updated free of charge at PetHub to allow the owner to list emergency contact information, including that of anyone who helps care for the animal, such as spouses, pet sitters, veterinarians, and other family and friends. Optional upgrades include "found pet" alerts, GPS notifications, and a way to broadcast a missing pet's profile to local shelters and businesses.

Regional Animal Services working to change image of outdoor cats

Saturday, November 23, 2013

One of the many feral cats placed in barns and garages through the
Regional Animal Services "Barn Cats R Us" program.
Note the tipped left ear, which indicates that
this cat has been altered to prevent breeding.

Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) is joining with animal organizations nationwide to change the image of outdoor cats. RASKC has partnered with Alley Cat Allies to raise awareness of the plight of these animals, and build support for humane solutions to dealing with them.

"While the best place for a cat is indoors with a loving family, that's not always possible for cats that aren't used to living with people," said Dr. Gene Mueller, manager of RASKC. "Fortunately, Regional Animal Services works with volunteers and community organizations to trap, spay or neuter, and place these cats where they can live out their lives as working cats."

One way that RASKC is working to turn feral cats into working cats is through the "Barn Cats R Us" program. This volunteer-led effort rehomes outdoor cats to barns and garages, as well as local businesses, where they work as rodent hunters.

"Outdoor cats provide totally natural, organic mouse and rat control," added Dr. Mueller. "Barn cats tend to hide from humans, and except for the occasional dead rodent they leave behind, you'll rarely see any evidence of them."

Along with rural barns and garages, Barn Cats R Us has rehomed feral cats to a local golf course, a winery, plant nurseries, and a King County water treatment plant. The cats are placed in small colonies, usually in groups of three or four. All of the cats have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped for identification, and have been tested for feline diseases. Best of all, there is no charge for this service, and volunteers are available to assist with placing barn cats. For more information, email Barn Cats or call RASKC at 206-296-7387.

In addition to the barn cats program, RASKC also works with South County Cats, Puget Sound Working Cats, Pasado's Safe Haven, Northwest Spay and Neuter Center, and the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project to save the lives of feral cats through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, spay/neuter services to reduce unwanted litters, and efforts to find homes for adoptable cats.

The Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project was started by a veterinarian formerly in practice in Shoreline. Since its inception in 1997, it has altered 85,063 cats. So far in 2013, they have altered 5,384 cats.

Learn more about Barn Cats R Us on the King County website.
