Noodle's Pet Remembrance Campaign

Tuesday, July 2, 2024

July 5th is Pet Remembrance Day, and Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) invites animal lovers to join them for a month-long tribute to furred, finned, and feathered family members who have passed on.

Inspired by her beloved tabby named Noodle, an anonymous community member will match every donation to SAFe Rescue made via this link, up to $17,000.

In addition to having their donation to kitties in need matched, dollar for dollar, supporters will also be able to share photos and memories of dearly departed pets on an online memorial page.

Noodle

“Noodle brought a lifetime of love to us,” said Noodle’s human. “Every day was better with him. He is my soul cat and I know that I’m not the only one who has been blessed with a soulmate in animal form, so I wanted to create this match fund in loving memory of the seventeen wonderful years we had together and also give others the chance to honor their beloved pets.”

The online memorial, named after Noodle, provides a space for the community to celebrate the pets who have walked, played, and cuddled through their lives. Anyone who makes a donation is encouraged to contribute stories and images of the animals they wish to remember.

Noodle’s Pet Remembrance Campaign will accept submissions through July 31, 2024.

Does your feline furball have STAR power? Show the world in the SAFe Tenth Anniversary RePURRsentative (STAR) Photo Contest

Saturday, April 20, 2024

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue), a no-kill, nonprofit rescue organization in Shoreline's Ballinger Village, is celebrating ten years of taking in, caring for and finding families for homeless cats of all ages and needs.

To commemorate this milestone, SAFe invites all friends of felines to submit a photo of the special kitty in their life to SAFe’s Tenth Anniversary RePURRsentative (STAR) Photo Contest

Submissions and voting take place online via this link: www.gogophotocontest.com/saferescue

The winning cat photo will be rendered into an original, hand-drawn pet portrait by local artist Sadie-Pie Designs. A digital version of this image will then be used in SAFe’s promotional tenth anniversary-themed merchandise and apparel.

Not only does this contest offer a fantastic way for cat parents to show off; all participation fees go directly to helping cats in need. Entries cost $10, with each vote costing $1. As of this writing, the contest has raised over half of its target goal of $25,000.

“It’s been so much fun seeing everyone submitting their cats to support the Rescue kitties,” says Kelsi Eldredge, SAFe Rescue’s Development and Communications Manager. “It’s a great way to get the whole community involved!”

Both submission and voting will close at 11:59 PM on April 30, 2024.

Walking around the neighborhood: Cat Crossing

Sunday, February 18, 2024

I spotted this sign on a recent walk in the Richmond Beach neighborhood. I was not aware that there are enough cats in the area to warrant it. The human crossing is about 20 feet further. Apparently cats prefer to have their own crossing.

Canopy Cat Rescue retrieves Shoreline cat from big tree in freezing rain and snow

Shouyou was wet and cold

Shaun and Tom, the arborists of Canopy Cat rescue, travel all over western Washington rescuing cats from the tops of trees. They have no charge for the rescues and fund their work from donations and merchandise sales.

They photograph their rescues to post on their Facebook page #canopycatrescue

Shoreline cats have not been in trouble for a couple of years but Shouyou got stuck during our coldest and snowiest weather.

Shouyou was rescued this week from a big tree in Shoreline.
The initial call was for an unknown cat, way up in a tree during our freezing rain and snow.
The rescue itself wasn’t easy given the weather and Shouyou being way out on a limb. So happy that he had a microchip with up to date info, once on the ground we learned his info and brought him home.

Anonymous donor to match $40,000 in donations to Cat Rescue in Ballinger Village

Sunday, December 24, 2023

Noodle was a professional house cat

An anonymous donor hopes to inspire the community by matching their donations to Seattle Area Feline Rescue in memory of her cat.

Shoreline, WA (December 22, 2022) – Christmas is coming early for the cats at Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe) —an anonymous donor has offered to match donations made through the end of the year in memory of her beloved cat, Noodle.

“Noodle was a professional house cat” the donor tells SAFe, “but he loved taking walkies (and naps) in his yard with his mom. He lived to be 17 years old and brought a lifetime of love to his mom and his two rabbits.”

Noodle's owner is honoring him with a donation to SAFe

To honor his long life of bringing joy and love to everyone around him, Noodle's mom will be matching donations to SAFe this winter, dollar-for-dollar, up to $40,000!

“We know the happiness that comes with having a loyal friend and companion like Noodle, “says SAFe’s Development Manager “and we're glad to honor Noodle's legacy by giving more families and cats a chance to experience that joy!

"The community’s generosity this winter will be amplified by Noodle's love and go twice as far to help homeless cats get the care they need and find loving homes.”

To make a gift to the kitties at Seattle Area Feline Rescue and have it matched dollar-for-dollar in Noodle's memory visit SAFe’s website

If you find an injured or dead animal - call Animal Control

Friday, December 15, 2023

This article is a reprint from 2017

By Paige Garberding

We recently learned through our neighborhood grapevine that a cat matching our missing cat’s description was found dead at the Berean Church, 185th and 1st NE. She had been missing for less than 12 hours.

The pastor found her Friday morning and called Animal Control. Before Animal Control could retrieve her, an unknown person removed her to an unknown location, probably the nearest garbage can, without making any apparent effort to locate her human(s).

Our cat didn't have a collar on but she was chipped and licensed. Had her body been left for Animal Control to pick up, they would have scanned her and notified us.

Had her body not been "disappeared" we could have seen her one last time and possibly determined what befell her. At the very least, we could have brought her home and buried her where she lived and was loved.

So if you find a dead animal with no collar, CALL ANIMAL CONTROL and secure the animal for safekeeping until they arrive. Don't assume it's a stray and don't treat it like garbage even if it does turn out to be a stray.

Consider the possibility that its human doesn't even know it's been killed and is looking for it. If it's injured and you can't find its human, CALL ANIMAL CONTROL* and secure the animal until they arrive. If you're like many of us, you'll take the animal to the closest vet who will scan it for a chip and notify its human(s).

Whatever you do, DON'T throw a dead animal in the garbage! Odds are, that's someone's beloved pet and they'll be heartbroken when they learn their furbaby has died - but even worse is having a beloved pet just disappear without knowing what happened.

This story is a reprint from 2017.

New veterinary resource for local pet parents who need assistance

Friday, March 10, 2023

SAFe medical team

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) is offering a series of monthly feline wellness clinics at its Shoreline location (14717 Aurora Ave N). These clinics support income-qualified individuals and families in the community by providing wellness care (including vaccination, microchips, flea treatment, and nail trims) for pet cats.

The clinic coming up on Monday, April 3, 2023 is currently accepting appointments for eligible clients.

Interested parties can learn more and apply for services on the Rescue’s website: https://www.seattleareafelinerescue.org/community-wellness-clinics/.

"As we continue to see the cost of veterinary care surge across the country, it's been an ongoing goal of SAFe to have the ability to provide services for our low-income and unhoused neighbors,” said Dylan Shaffer, the Rescue’s Community Support Manager.

“For many of these individuals, a visit to the vet is simply financially out of reach. Regardless of where someone may be in their life, their pets are a part of their family.
"Being able to provide wellness care that meets the needs of our community ensures that all pets are able to continue to live happy, healthy lives in loving homes while easing the financial burden on their owners."

Canopy Cat Rescue is still on the job

Felix was 12 days in a tree
See the YouTube video of the rescue
By Diane Hettrick

The arborists / cat rescuers of Canopy Cat Rescue (CCR) are my heroes. They travel Puget Sound from Bellingham to Olympia getting cats out of trees. I think I have the distinction of having owned the only cat in the known universe who knew how to climb down a tree. The rest are great at climbing up, particularly when they are being chased by a coyote, but can't get back down.

The CCR guys climb 100' trees to coax kitties into nets to take them safely to their owners on the ground. And they only ask for donations!

They just published an Ask with the one year anniversary of their Mewsletter:

"Tis the season for our one year anniversary of our CCR "Mews" AND for giving so that CCR can help rescue more cats who need us in the coming years.

"In this edition, with our #KittyStarofCCR Omar prominently featured... in a bread basket no less (his merch will be launching soon!) - you'll read about Felix, the sweetest grey kitty with his moon eyes who was adopted because of a professional business pitch, survived a house fire and then went missing 13 days in a tree with the family giving up all hope... until CCR saved the day!

"(spoiler alpurrt) Plus our partnership with Your Cat Backpack by Travel Cat and upcoming event on Dec 28!

"You can read the "mews" with this link - https://files.constantcontact.com/.../3718d524-140c-4b6f...

"We have so many big plans for CCR to expand our reach to be able save cats in other areas. We need to train new climbers with extensive knowledge of cat behavior and we can do that in the future with your help!

"We want to assist as many families and kitties like Felix' that we can, which is why we humbly ask you to consider making a tax-deductible donation this holiday by December 31st.

"You can do this in many ways - visit our website and donate here - https://www.canopycatrescue.com/donate-.html , our Venmo @canopycatrescur, create a Facebook or Instagram campaign and outreach to your kitty loving network (it's SO easy), become a monthly supporter, make a planned gift or a gift of stock... or just share our organization with your friends and family!

"No matter which way you decide to give, it makes a HUGE difference for us and cats who need our help, both kitties with families and stray kitties. Last year we rescued around 720 cat and this year over 800. So we definitely need your help so we can keep growing! You helped us do this!

"Thank you so much for believing in what we do, and for your unwavering support. All of us and the kitties we save wish you a very meowy holiday with lots of purrs and chin scratches! If you need assistance making a donation, please reach out to erin@canopycatrescue.com

Looking for something to keep you warm?

Monday, October 24, 2022

By Pam Cross

After too much sun, our lovely rainy fall days are here. Feeling like something to keep you warm?

These cuties arrived today. Too young for a forever-home, they are currently being fostered.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill organization located near the border of Seattle and Shoreline, at 14717 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133. (501c3 #91-2041961.) SAFe Rescue takes in homeless cats and kittens, gives them the care they need to recover, and finds them loving homes.

An extensive network of community volunteers and foster families helps the rescue carry out its mission and save more lives.

Volunteer jobs are available for all skills from cleaning and doing laundry, kitty care, behavior training, retail and desk reception, adoption counseling, office support, to veterinary support, and transporting rescue cats. Learn more and sign up at SeattleAreaFelineRescue.org/volunteer

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) Adoption Center and shelter facility will move to a new Shoreline location at Ballinger Village Shopping Center which will more than double the Rescue’s current physical footprint.

In addition to a busy feline Adoption Center, the new location will be home to a new Community Medical Program offering subsidized veterinary care to income-qualified pet owners.

If you’re a pet owner, you know that veterinary costs have increased. You also know that a feline pet can provide great enjoyment and comfort for the young and the old. This became more apparent during the pandemic when we were largely confined to our homes.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, SAFe Rescue, has a food pantry for cats. You can drop off food your fussy cat decides is not to their liking, and pick up another one to try.
Give cats and kittens a life-saving second chance with this kind and generous no-kill shelter in Shoreline.

New medical resource for local pet parents in need of assistance

Thursday, October 20, 2022

Local cat adoption center announces Community Wellness Clinic to support low-income individuals and households in need of wellness care for their owned cats.

Shoreline, WA (October 19, 2022) – Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) is pleased to announce that on Monday, October 24, 2022 the first SAFe Rescue Community Wellness Clinic will be held at SAFe’s Adoption Center from 9am to 3pm.

This clinic is the first in a series focused on supporting individuals and families in the community who are low-income and/or experiencing homelessness by providing wellness care for their owned cats.

"As we continue to see the cost of veterinary care surge across the country, it's been an ongoing goal of SAFe to have the ability to provide services for our low-income and unhoused neighbors,” said Dylan Shaffer, the Rescue’s Community Support Specialist.
“For many of these individuals, a visit to the vet is simply financially out of reach. Regardless of where someone may be in their life, their pets are a part of their family. Being able to provide wellness care that meets the needs of our community ensures that all pets are able to continue to live happy, healthy lives in loving homes while easing the financial burden on their owners."

This first clinic will focus exclusively on wellness care for owned cats.
This care includes exams, vaccines (Rabies and FVRCP), microchip implantation, flea treatment, dewormer, nail trims, and FIV/FeLV combo tests.

As SAFe’s Community Support program continues to grow, there are plans to expand the available services offered through the monthly clinics.

This wellness clinic is also just one part of a larger community-focused program that SAFe Rescue is putting in place for those that are in need of affordable medical services for their feline companions.

Also in the works is a facility move to Ballinger Village. (Why a cat would need 6400 square feet)

“There is so much need for veterinary services in our community,” explains Kim Morgan LVT, SAFe’s Veterinary Care Manager. “With more space, we can acquire more equipment—and that means helping more cats!”

The clinic coming up on Monday, October 24 is currently accepting appointments for eligible clients. Interested parties can sign up on the Rescue’s website and spots will be available until filled.

The next clinic is scheduled for Monday, December 5th, and SAFe Rescue is excited to be able to provide these services to the community.

New veterinary clinic opens in Richmond Beach - Grand Opening event Saturday

Friday, September 23, 2022

Dr. Jeb Mortimer, doctor-owner: Jeb has been with SVA since 2000 and became an owner soon after. His veterinary interests are many and his curiosity and drive to learn more is part of what keeps SVA at the forefront of veterinary medicine.

Richmond Beach Animal Hospital opened Monday, September 19, 2022 at 1860 NW 195th St, Shoreline, WA 98177 The public is invited to their grand opening event on Saturday, September 24, 2022. RSVP here: richmondbeachvet.com

Drs. Jeb and Kristine Mortimer will be there to meet the community. Kristie and Jeb met in veterinary school and have four children, a dog, two cats, various chickens, and usually have some variety of “pocket pet” as well.

Seattle Veterinary Associates is excited to announce the opening of our newest animal hospital which is located in Shoreline.

Doctor’s hours are available by appointment now. We are welcoming the public to our grand opening event on Saturday, September 24th from 11am until 3pm.

Dr. Kristine Mortimer, Associate Doctor (and Jeb’s wife). Kristie worked in emergency veterinary medicine for many years at a practice called ACCES which was purchased by BluePearl and subsequently closed. Since then she has worked for SVA as a relief veterinarian as well as pioneering our telemedicine appointment program during the pandemic. With the opening of the RBAH location she will finally be seeing patients in person routinely.

During the event there will be a variety of beverage options as well as food, including some curated menu options from the newly opened Le Petit Paquet restaurant across the street.

Doctors and staff will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to RSVP at richmondbeachvet.com

Seattle Veterinary Associates (SVA) was founded in 1971 under the leadership of four veterinarians who were dissatisfied with both the quality and range of medical services available in the area.

They built a company that has endured for over 50 years while remaining in the hands of doctor-owners who live locally and practice in the clinics they own. That personal engagement is part of what makes both being an employee and a client of SVA a special experience.

Come meet us and see why we’re different!

Why a Cat Would Need 6,400 Square Feet

Saturday, July 9, 2022

Rescued cat recovering from surgery
Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) is pleased to announce that its Adoption Center and shelter facility will move to a new Shoreline location in 2023.

SAFe’s upcoming move to Ballinger Village Shopping Center will more than double the Rescue’s current physical footprint.

This expansion is set to enhance the services SAFe offers, which include caring for homeless cats, uniting them with loving families, and supporting local pet owners.

“This move will empower SAFe to make the impact I have always known we are capable of making. With more space and resources, SAFe's support for the vulnerable will continue to grow,” said Emily Sprong, the Rescue’s Executive Director.
“In addition to continuing to find homes for as many as 2,000 homeless cats and kittens each year, SAFe is also building its capacity to help keep local pet owners together with their beloved furry companions.”

In addition to a busy feline Adoption Center, the new location will be home to a new Community Medical Program offering subsidized veterinary care to income-qualified pet owners.

SAFe will move to the space currently occupied by Indigo Urgent Care

As the pandemic continues to exacerbate veterinary shortages, the need to provide pre- and post-adoption veterinary care is more urgent than ever. A larger medical suite will be one of the main features of SAFe’s new home.

“There is so much need for veterinary services in our community,” explains Kim Morgan LVT, SAFe’s Veterinary Care Manager. “With more space, we can acquire more equipment—and that means helping more cats!”

SAFe is currently undertaking a capital campaign to renovate and equip its new home. From volunteers, to fosters, to supporters, community members make every aspect of the Rescue’s work possible. The new location is no exception: it will be designed to serve the local community, which in turn will be made possible by support from that same community. (More information here)

SAFe Rescue is looking forward to creating a new home with the space and equipment to offer care to all kinds of cats, from those in need of medical attention to those who are seeking a new home.

Petco Love invests in lifesaving work of Seattle Area Feline Rescue

Monday, April 26, 2021

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) announced today a $16,000 grant investment from the newly named, Petco Love, to support their lifesaving work for animals in the Puget Sound area.

Petco Love is a nonprofit leading change for pets nationally by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier.

Since their founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, they’ve empowered organizations with nearly $300 million invested to date in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And, they’ve helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations, like ours, nationwide.

“Today Petco Love announces an investment in SAFe Rescue and hundreds of other organizations as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, President of Petco Love.
“Our local investments are only one component. This month, we will also launch the first of our national tools to empower all animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us.”

“As we work to help our community during these challenging times, this grant from Petco Love will make it possible to help cats stay in loving homes, unite cats in need with new families, and support local pet owners,” said Emily Sprong, Executive Director of SAFe Rescue.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill organization located on the border of Seattle and Shoreline, at 14717 Aurora Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. (501c3 #91-2041961.) SAFe Rescue takes in homeless cats and kittens, gives them the care they need to recover, and finds them loving homes.

Over 2,000 felines, including seniors and special needs cats, find homes at SAFe in a typical year as people in search of new friends visit our welcoming storefront Adoption Center. An extensive network of community volunteers and foster families helps the rescue carry out its mission and save more lives.

During COVID-19, the Rescue has instituted a no-contact adoption process to keep the community safe and has created the Stay SAFe Pet Pantry to help pet owners facing economic hardship care for their furry family members.

Petco Love is a nonprofit changing lives by making communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier.

Since our founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, we’ve empowered animal welfare organizations by investing nearly $300 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. We’ve helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and organizations nationwide.
