Saturday, July 20, Shoreline Community College, 8am-2pm - the 32nd annual Vintage VW Show and Swap Meet
Pre-register your vintage VW for this event ($15) and join with others to see these "bugs" which seem to have a permanent home in our hearts (Admission $7). Not beautiful, definitely not muscle cars, they were more like family pets. Antique and Vintage Car Show at Richmond Beach Celebration

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Updated 05-12-2013 12:10pm

And the air was filled with the music of era of these fine cars and trucks

Saturday, May 11, 2013  - Richmond Beach - photos and text by Marc Weinberg

The Richmond Beach Celebration again featured the Antique and Vintage Car Show hosted by Richmond Beach Rehabilitation Center.

The parking lot was bright and brilliant with glorious examples of the passion, patience and dedication that it takes to restore old cars and then proudly show them off on a summer-like day in May. The public, the neighborhood and those in residence at the center were treated to this fine exhibit along with snacks, drinks and music.

One of the special attractions at the exhibit was Ken's 1935 Dodge Pick up with it's viper V-10 engine. Ken's vehicle is customized to allow him to drive with his feet, since he has no arms.

Lonnie is proudly showing off his '55 T-Bird which once belonged to his mother Doris. Doris is a resident at the center and is holding her favorite friend Matty.

Walkathon and Car Show postponed until May 5, 2013

Friday, October 5, 2012

From Monty K Reed 206-250-5639, They Shall Walk

They Shall Walk’s Walkathon, Rollathon and Car Show scheduled for this Sunday October 7, 2012 9am-4pm has been postponed until May 5, 2013.

The primary concern that brought this decision about was the incredible increase in event insurance expense to meet the coverage needs of Sears corporate office. While the insurance requirement of Sears has not changed, the number of insurance companies capable of writing this type of insurance in Washington has. The insurance company previously used for events at Sears no longer does business in Washington.

They Shall Walk would like to thank Sears in Shoreline and Collins Insurance for their hard work to find solutions for the October event and look forward to the May 5 event at the Sears Plaza. They Shall Walk would also like to thank supporters, friends and volunteers and look forward to a fabulous event on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

They Shall Walk has developed the LIFESUIT robotic exoskeleton creating an industry
of robotic therapy devices while mentoring students from area high schools and colleges as interns. Students have hands on experience in the lab building robotic systems that improve the quality of life while learning real life skills that they will use on the job after graduation.

Shoreline Classic Car Show at Meridian Park

Saturday, August 11, 2012

By Diane Hettrick

Shoreline resident Martin Degrazia has been involved with car shows for many years.

As a Seattle resident, he volunteered from the beginning with the Greenwood Car Show. The Greenwood Car Show was started by Jerry Cline of Cline Customer Jewelry as a benefit for the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce. Cline's business was located for many years in Shoreline, on 200th across from Aurora Village, and is now in Snohomish County, just over the line.

When Jerry left the Greenwood Chamber, the leaders outsourced the event to a private group which called itself the Greenwood Knights. The Knights included some founding members of the show, local business leaders, and a few car enthusiasts, including leader Brian Canfield. Degrazia was involved all this time.

In 2004, Martin Degrazia moved home and business to Shoreline.

"I moved to Shoreline 6 years ago (not a big move by any means) and absolutely love it here. I take my daughters to Meridian Park and couldn't get it out of my head, what a great location this would be for a car show. What school couldn't use a little extra money in todays economy?"

The Meridian Park PTSA became a partner for the event when Degrazia was unable to open a checking account in the name of the car show. All proceeds are given to the school, to dispense as they see fit.

The sponsorship level has been kept at $200. This is low, says Degrazia. "I really wanted this to be a community event. I wanted to have big business along with small business and I am very grateful for all the show sponsors."

With the second show, in 2011, Degrazia was able to obtain the status of an an official Seafair Sanctioned Community Event, a status he maintained with the third show this year.

With all the years of experience Degrazia has running car shows, the event was polished and successful from the beginning. The inaugural 2009 show featured J.P. Patches, and Lance Lambert, both of whom made generous deals for their time, and the singing talents of The Fabulous Hammers, who donated their time. It made over $6,000 for the school.

The 2010 show was a day full of rain, which caused many participants to cancel, dropping proceeds to $4,500.

2012 was brilliant sunshine and every slot available was filled, with almost 240 cars. Final figures are not in but Degrazia expects to make around $6,000 again. "Our car total was up," he said, "but so were our expenses."

He has nothing to apologize for. There are few schools in Shoreline where a parent volunteers to run a fund-raiser that brings in $4-6,000 for the school, let alone one that brings delight to so many people.

The spirit of J.P. lives on at the Shoreline Classic Car Show

At the same time, this photo popped up from where it had been oddly filed (who could have done that, I wonder?).

Classic cars: Twin brothers, twin cars

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Richmond Beach native Scott Anderson responded to the invitation to share stories of beloved cars with this wonderful story about his father, his father's twin brother and their cars.

By Scott Anderson

As they say, a car can be restored any number of times but it’s only an original once.

This reminds me of another set of originals I once knew. The cars, 1950 Pontiacs. The brothers, a couple of identical twin blonde farm boys named Jim and Jack. While sitting on a dock fishing in Poulsbo one afternoon 13 days short of their 19th birthdays, they heard some news about a harbor in Hawaii being bombed by the Japanese. Often already dressing identically – sometimes even by accident- they soon found themselves in matching clothes of a darker shade of green than the car below, and spent the next years watching out for each other through some very interesting times.

1950 Pontiac steering wheel and dash

In 1950 they each bought a car – on the same day, at the same time, they walked into the same dealership and ordered two identical cars be to built. Dark green Pontiacs. They’d have the Silver Streak model please, the one with the chromed Streaks on top of the hood leading straight down to the hood ornament bust of Chief Pontiac himself; it even lit up at night. By day the prism on the dashboard lit up in hues of green, yellow, and red to echo the traffic light because the visor was so low – much like the brim of the mens’ fedoras. Even the license numbers differed only by the last digit. Never – and I do mean never – would they go out on the town, these men and their machines, but the cars were clean, polished (it’s Simonized!) and looking as sharp as the creases pressed in their doublebreasted suits.

Louise, an Army colonel’s daughter, meanwhile was returning from Europe through Seattle and answering a girl named Margie’s ad for a room mate wanted. As luck would have it, Margie was seeing Jack, and since neither Jack’s brother nor her friend and room mate were attached, a double date seemed a good idea. One date lead to another, and soon Jim and Jack became Jim and Louise and Jack and Margie. They were more identical than would seem plausible to those that didn’t know them but the passing years don’t alter the many ‘TwinThings’ that really happened. For example the time the usually very popular Jack’s longshore coworkers in Everett suddenly shunned him because he’d been seen walking in Seattle at the World’s Fair with an obviously ‘expecting’ woman who was Not - His - Wife. Only a lunchtime trip home to retrieve a photo album restored Order on the Waterfront through the phrase “Oh that must have been my twin”.

Lighted hood ornament of Chief Pontiac
As the years went by Jim and Louise had a son, who himself often couldn’t tell his dad from his uncle.  But the sound of that big GM straight eight motor echoing off the garage walls early in the morning or late at night – that was something he could tell anytime from any other sound. In the morning it was the starting gun for the race to the window for a glimpse of a proud fender disappearing round the corner, and in the night it was the knowledge that all was right with the world filtering through a little boy’s cowboy dreams.

They’re gone now – the handsome men, the gleaming green Pontiacs, and the panache of their times. But the son does remember sitting up so high in the front seat of Jim’s car, feeling the firmness of the padded mohair upholstery and yet oddly the springs beneath it too, barely able to peer over the large radio speaker in the center of the dashboard … I’d love to say that even then I knew there was something special about those days, but its magic was something as beyond the grasp of so young a boy as that huge steering wheel in my little hands when I was once even allowed to “drive”. Still it’s a friendly shadow, something of a time I carry with me that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Thanks for coming along, I hope you enjoyed your ride!
