Lake Forest Park Council Candidate Larry Goldman

Friday, October 15, 2021

Ballots will be mailed October 16, 2021 for the November 2 general election.

Larry Goldman is running for council position 7, currently held by John Resha, who is retiring at the end of his term. Goldman's opponent is Paul Sanford.

Larry Goldman
Larry's statement

Hello! I’m Larry Goldman, I’m a UW Chemistry Instructor, and I’m running for Lake Forest Park City Council Position 7. Our community is one of the safest, most environmentally proactive, and most livable cities in Washington.

I’m running for City Council because I want to preserve and enhance our tree-canopied residential community while finding ways to make it easier for people to get around town and enjoy our natural environment.

Over the summer I’ve walked to thousands of homes to meet with residents from the Southern Gateway to Horizon View, from Balaton to Sheridan Beach, and all points in between.

I’ve listened to what people are passionate about and shared my own priorities. As a teacher I believe in open communication. It’s essential that our community is able to easily keep track of our City’s administration, projects, and priorities.

It’s also essential that our City Council remains well-informed about the interests of our community and community responses to council proposals. As a Councilmember I will hold regular drop-in “office hours” so we can continue these conversations.

As I walked through our neighborhoods, I confirmed that in too many areas it is simply unsafe for children to walk to school, for adults to walk to their bus stop (if their neighborhood even has bus service), or for families to walk their dogs.

I am committed to improving pedestrian safety and transit access. I will prioritize building sidewalks near all five schools serving our LFP students. I will integrate safety data and community guidance to prioritize additional traffic, bike, and pedestrian safety improvements in all our neighborhoods.

I support public park spaces for all our residents. Lake Forest Park is the only city bordering Lake Washington to lack a public lakefront park. LFP, with generous grants from the county and state, is in the process of purchasing two acres just east of Lyon Creek Preserve to develop into a public lakefront park. One of my top priorities on the Council will be developing this park in a way that meets the needs and desires of our residents.

I love living in Lake Forest Park. Meeting so many of my neighbors during my campaign has been a wonderful experience. I look forward to serving on the city council to make LFP an even more pleasant city in which to live. Thank you for your support and for your vote!

Shoreline Council Candidate Eben Pobee

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Ballots will be mailed October 16, 2021 for the November 2 general election.

Eben Pobee is running unopposed for Shoreline City Council position 5, currently held by Susan Chang, who is retiring at the end of her term.

Eben Pobee
Eben's statement

Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts, University of Ghana; Master’s in Business Administration, Concordia University

Occupation: Finance Manager, EPOBS Solutions; Consultant, B-Construction UG. (Previously with Pierce County, Pierce Transit and Novanta)

I’m running to give my neighbors the opportunities that Shoreline has provided me and to give voice to the overlooked and underserved.

I’ve been blessed to live the American Dream here in Shoreline. I’m inspired by my family and driven by a commitment to public service with honor and integrity.

Our greatest responsibility is to build a better city for the next generation. As a community leader, husband, and father of three, I ask myself: how can we accommodate growth, while honoring our environment and the needs of our community? Shoreline’s decision-making process should be easier to understand so that everyone can provide input; I believe this will guide the city to develop implementable recommendations that reflect community input.

I pledge to listen to your concerns, research the issues, be a consensus-builder, and make decisions that benefit the people and businesses of Shoreline.

Endorsements: Senator Salomon, Representative Davis, Deputy Mayor Scully, Councilmembers Chang, McConnell, and Robertson, and many of your friends and neighbors.

Shoreline Council Candidate Chris Roberts

Ballots will be mailed October 15, 2021 for the November 2 general election.

Chris Roberts
Chris Roberts
is the incumbent in position 7, running unopposed.

Chris' statement

Every March, the City Council meets to set the city’s goals for the year. I am always impressed by the dedication of our staff to our city and by the progress that is made every year to implement those goals and make our city a better place to live and work.

In just the past 12 months, we provided CARES Act funding directly to local businesses, adopted our city’s Housing Action Plan, and completed infrastructure improvements on Westminster to help revitalize Shoreline Place.

We filled in the sidewalk gap on 1st Ave NE just north of Shoreline Park, received grant funding for the 145th St Corridor and the 148th St non-motorized bridge, planted 64 new trees along 9th Ave NE, and began implementing our priority environmental strategies.

We are implementing our city’s diversity and inclusion program, holding several virtual discussions and workshops about building an anti-racist community, and are working with multiple community organizations to strengthen Shoreline’s RADAR program.

I know there is much more we need to do to make sure that our city works for all residents. We ought to invest in acquiring and developing park space in all of Shoreline’s neighborhoods. We should complete sidewalks surrounding our city’s elementary schools so everyone can walk safely to school. We should prioritize green building design and update and continue to implement our city’s climate action plan.

I am confident that we will come together to meet the challenges that arise in our city. We are residents of a city that is generous, tolerant, and passionate. When we come together, I know that we will continue to build a city we all are proud of.

I would appreciate your vote this November.

Shoreline Council Candidate Laura Mork

Ballots will be mailed October 15, 2021 for the November 2 general election.

Laura Mork is running unopposed for Shoreline city council position 3, currently held by Mayor Will Hall, who is retiring from the council at the end of his term.

Laura Mork
Laura's statement

My family and I have lived in Shoreline for 25 years, with my son and daughter going through Shoreline Schools, and I as a long-time volunteer. I am an engineer with decades of managerial experience in the private sector.

I believe that input coming from people of diverse backgrounds and experiences strengthens quality decision-making. I plan to bring my experience to City Council and I will listen and learn from other people’s unique perspectives.

I am running for City Council to provide community oversight for the infrastructure changes necessitated by the Light Rail stations and population growth; things such as sewers, sidewalks, and public places.

My focus will be on cost-effective solutions that support our environment and community. My years of work on both the Ronald Wastewater and Shoreline Planning Commissions highlighted the importance of community input as well as the importance of considering alternate solutions.

Our City’s Park system needs to be improved. All neighborhoods should have parks that are easily accessible. Green spaces and trees provide many environmental benefits, and are good for our mental health. My vision for a walkable community means that people who want to walk, can safely do so, whether it be a local business, a park, or in a neighborhood.

I believe Shoreline must be responsive to the needs of residents now and in the future. As a city council member, I will strive to find the solutions that will move our community forward as a great, sustainable place to live and do business.

I believe in community, and have a strong sense of place. Place is where we live, where we listen to each other, where we feel safe and have many things to do. Place is where education is valued, diversity is a strength, and residents respect governance.

But a community such as this doesn’t just spring up and last indefinitely, it requires constant care. Each of us must vote, support our local businesses (so that our tax dollars stay in town), and volunteer as needed to ensure this care. Each of us must participate.

I humbly ask for your vote to serve on the Shoreline City Council.

Shoreline Council Candidate John Ramsdell

Ballots will be mailed October 15, 2021 for the November 2 general election.

John Ramsdell is running unopposed for Shoreline City Council position 1, currently held by Keith McGlashan, who is retiring at the end of his term.

John Ramsdell
John's statement

I hold a passionate belief that good government strives to engage its residents in open dialogue, one that actively listens and collaborates to solve problems that impact our lives.

The Shoreline City Council will make decisions during the next four years that will determine what our community will look like 25 years from now. Public input will play a critical role in determining the best path forward for our community.

My neighbors, city staff, current Council, and campaign volunteers know me as the person who successfully initiated and shepherded Shoreline's recent purchase of a private lot to be developed into a public park.

For 25 years as a licensed mental health professional, I have provided specialized assistance to thousands of King County’s most vulnerable citizens, including elderly adults in crisis, individuals with disabilities, people without homes, and foster children.

As an Employee Assistance Program clinical account executive, I currently provide and manage services to over 80,000 employees in over 200 companies, non-profit organizations, small businesses, native tribes, school districts, and municipalities in the Pacific Northwest.

The challenges our community will face will be daunting. Affordable housing, equitable access to public open space, structural racism, police reform, and public safety are a few of the many issues that the Council will tackle. Members of the Council have played and will continue to play an essential role in mitigating the effects of global warming.

It will be necessary to approve ordinances that will eliminate our dependency on fossil fuels, encourage the use of public transportation and provide economic incentives to prevent urban sprawl. Our future as a species depends on it.

I am excited to start my term on the Council in January with a very talented group of colleagues. I hope and expect that my education, including advanced degrees in public administration and psychology, professional and volunteer experiences, will prepare me to be a councillor that Shoreline residents will proudly call their own.

Shoreline City Council Candidates discuss the environment

Friday, October 8, 2021

L-R Laura Mork, Eben Pobee, John Ramsdell, Chris Roberts

By Jamie Holter

The Washington League of Women Voters and the local non-profit group Save Shoreline Trees hosted a candidate forum Tuesday, October 5, 2021 devoted to green topics: climate change, the tree canopy, heat islands, parks and open space, building codes, and affordable housing.

Because all candidates are running unopposed and Chris Roberts is unopposed and the incumbent, candidates were mostly in alignment and supportive about what’s been done and what they will do.

This forum was a unique opportunity to see each future councilmembers’ strengths and passions in this area and see how they might complement each other as they will eventually be working together on these important issues.

Laura Mork is an engineer by trade and focused on engineering ideas like permeable (water-absorptive) sidewalks, rain gardens, new construction ideas like all electric buildings and painting roofs white, more incentives, and her experience with the Salmon Safe program and the City’s Deep Green Incentive Program.

Eben Pobee, a budget analyst and Ghanaian immigrant, shared his passion and experience with significant community engagement as the city makes these decisions and moves forward on policy and programs.

John Ramsdell, a mental health clinician, spoke fervently about the well-being of residents, the benefits of green space, access to open space, the creation of pocket parks, and eliminating the stressors of life like lack of affordable housing.

Chris Roberts brought specifics to the conversation when discussing the balance of high-density housing and the preservation of large-diameter trees, the comprehensive plan, looking at sidewalk width and how there might be some flexibility, and the planting of more street trees along transit corridors.

The candidates all spoke of the value of multi-family housing / affordable housing along and around transit corridors as a means of managing climate change and the efficient use of land.

They supported tax-incentives to build the high-density communities and the concept of all-electric buildings (no gas utilities, only electric).

They also acknowledge that large developments require the removal of the long-standing tree canopy and one idea might be to encourage or require more trees inside these developments as a way to find that balance.

They also supported pocket parks to give more residents the opportunity to experience open space. “Everyone should be within walking distance of a park,” said Mr. Ramsdell.

Mr. Pobee suggested raising the cost for tree cutting permits.

Councilmember Roberts would like to see the new parks bond support more open space beyond the areas near the new transit centers. He also discussed more flexibility in sidewalk width requirement.

Ms. Mork discussed the need to keep our existing trees healthy and doing an inventory of heritage and valuable trees while Mr. Ramsdell said the City talks about a zero reduction in tree canopy, but acknowledged, regretfully, that’s probably not possible.

One question centered around the frustration of being brought into the development process when projects are at 60 percent design and neighbors have missed their opportunity to weigh in. Mr. Ramsdell emphasized the importance of council members attending neighborhood meetings to listen and bring concerns back.

Mr. Pobee said community input throughout the process is necessary. Ms. Mork talked about the need for more data as we make these decisions. Mr. Roberts shared what the city is already doing, acknowledging that it could be better.

There seemed to be much agreement and passion with this group. They also seemed to complement each other so it may be that they will find agreement to move forward on these issues.

Candidate Semra Riddle - Lake Forest Park City Council Pos 1

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Semra Riddle, LFP City Council Pos 1
I am thrilled to once again be running for LFP City Council position 1. And with the pandemic of 2020 and 2021 continuing to impact our community and myself I have to admit that I missed the Voter’s Guide statement deadline.

As I’ve said often, I will offer grace and solutions when things don’t work out as we first intended. So please find my expanded voter’s guide statement here and on my Facebook Page.

My interest in governing originated in a need to see this city grow to be a place my daughter wants to live in when she grows up and raises kids.

With this future always on my mind, I am proud that over the last 5 years I brought strong environmental regulations that protect our shared tree canopy, added affordable housing at Town Center, future proofed the Town Center code to be prepared for more electrified vehicles and even conversion from parking to commercial space if reliance on cars diminishes, and advocated for those in our community that are often unheard including encouraging the Police to adopt a Values Statement that “values the sanctity of all life”.

In the coming 4 years I intend to build on those successes like bringing forward city-wide Equity Guidelines to expand on the Police Chief’s message, to revisit how we value trees through the lens of a connected ecosystem that has intrinsic and economic value to all in our community, to increase housing diversity and options that fit in LFP, and to support the creation a Climate Action Plan.

I also hope to bring some new opportunities to our community like creating a real public art program, fostering a partnership with the University of Washington’s Livable City program to give real world experience to students while reaping the benefits of the perspective and creativity of youth, and creating a city sponsored locking mailbox program to help reduce the rampant mail theft that often plagues our community.

Ultimately, I see a future for LFP that will forever be green, welcoming, and prepared to face the challenges of the future. Thank you for the opportunity to serve this community for another term.

Semra Riddle, Councilmember City of Lake Forest Park

Tracy Furutani, Campaign Kickoff for LFP City Council position 5

Saturday, August 28, 2021

Tracy Furutani answers questions at kickoff
Tracy Furutani held his official Campaign Kickoff for LFP City Council position 5. Tracy highlighted the reasons for jumping into the race:
  • Climate: the city’s need to develop and implement a climate action plan.
  • Equity: City plans need to have a lens where all people of LFP are considered.
  • Accessibility: we need transparency and access to information, and ensure our city is an inclusive community.

The kickoff was outside, masks on, and socially distanced. Community musicians and local playwright David Farkas, and community actors entertained the group.

LFP residents shared their insights on Tracy and why they support him so strongly for his candidacy.

They spoke about Tracy’s science background, and his commitment to a focus on climate action and equity for the city. A resident shared Tracy’s long-term commitment to education as an instructor at North Seattle College teaching 25 years of climate science.

It was also mentioned that he serves on the board of Shorelake Arts, monitors local creeks with Streamkeepers, and was an Advisory Committee member with the LFP Water District where he volunteered in the Shoreline schools teaching water education and is currently helping them to update a Climate Action Plan.

Campaign event held outdoors with social distancing

The highlight was when Tracy spoke and had a question-and-answer period. Tracy answered several questions ranging from air quality monitoring along Bothell Way, to Prop. #1, and electric cars.

Tracy explained that electric cars are a good way to reduce carbon if the source of the electric energy is green. Not all electricity comes from a renewable source. He went on to explain that as we move forward to find solutions to reduce our carbon footprint, we also need to look through the lens of equity for solutions as not everyone can afford an electric car.

After the question-and-answer period, one LFP resident observed, “Tracy has the openness to listen to all members of Lake Forest Park and their varying perspectives and he has the background and the ability to dig deeply into whatever issue is before him. His answers did not just skim the surface, and I appreciated that.”

Tracy has lived in Lake Forest Park for 17 years. He sees being on the council as a chance to give back to the community.

“Lake Forest Park is a great place to live. I want to make sure that our future includes healthy growth without increasing our carbon footprint or losing what makes Lake Forest Park unique. I look forward to hearing from you during the campaign."

Candidate Paul Sanford - Lake Forest Park City Council Position 7

Tuesday, August 10, 2021

Paul Sanford, candidate for
Lake Forest Park city council
Position 7
Hi Neighbor – My name is Paul Sanford and I am running for position 7 on the Lake Forest Park City Council.

With accelerating growth in the region, our city is at an inflection point. I want to protect the unique character of Lake Forest Park that inspired my wife and me to raise our family here.

It’s been a wonderful experience of finding community, enjoying green spaces, Farmers Market visits, coaching basketball games, umping for Little League, and volunteering at PTA events. As a drummer, I’ve also been able to play music with other dads in the community.

I am originally from a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Growing up, I enjoyed being able to walk and bike everywhere. There, as is true here in Lake Forest Park, nature was always accessible.

Ever since I interned on Capitol Hill for Senator Carl Levin, I’ve wanted to serve the public. I will bring a common-sense, fiscally responsible approach to solving complex problems.

I will work to protect our tree canopy and watershed, enhance park and bike access, and add more sidewalks. I will support more housing options through targeted zoning enhancements. My Initiatives Page has more information on initiatives I care about.

I have significant experience at high-growth technology companies navigating change and delivering solutions with global teams. Every day I’ll bring that same positive, action-oriented, and collaborative attitude to our Lake Forest Park community and city council.

50 years from now I want future residents of LFP to say we made the right decisions to confer all the positive benefits of living in our city that I and my family have enjoyed.

Best, Paul

Maddy Larson, candidate for
Lake Forest Park city council
position 5
Greetings LFP Friends and Neighbors,

My name is Maddy Larson and I’m excited to let you all know that I am running for Lake Forest Park City Council Position 5.

Our community is facing demands and pressures that come with the exponential growth and changes we're experiencing in our region. Housing, infrastructure, climate change, pedestrian connection and walkways, ecological stewardship, parks, and public safety are all areas where I can provide progressive and thoughtful leadership.

I would be honored to represent you and listen to you as your voice on the Council. I will work hard to help our community grow responsibly, provide a green legacy for the future, and thrive without sacrificing what makes Lake Forest Park unique.

My commitment to community service in LFP runs deep. For the past three years I have volunteered to serve on -- and now chair -- our city’s Planning Commission.

In that role I have made citizen participation a priority by encouraging public comment at every Commission meeting, actively listening to our residents, and hosting public hearings. I collaborate with fellow commissioners, the City Council, and city staff to study and tackle significant issues facing our city related to growth, development, housing, and transportation needs.

While serving on the Planning Commission, I helped to shape balanced recommendations for future commercial and residential development of the Town Center, including important provisions for community space such as Third Place Commons.

Other notable provisions addressed streamside and neighborhood buffers, open space and green space, height limitations, and staying in scale with our community and our environment. Currently I am chairing the effort to examine our existing Accessory Dwelling Unit building code, and developed a community survey to better inform the Commission in its work. My experience in leading the Planning Commission and working directly with our city government, combined with my demonstrated commitment to LFP citizens, will allow me to hit the ground running if you elect me to represent you.

Over the past several decades, I have also been a leader in non-profit and education fields as a dedicated professional. I have successfully led projects benefiting our K-12 communities by working closely with state agencies and legislators, universities, business communities, and granting agencies to benefit these communities. I would like to use this deep and broad base of professional experience to listen, collaborate, and obtain results for our residents.

I ask for your support so that I may represent you and ensure that LFP remains a vibrant community focused on its sustainability and quality of life.

Sincerely,

Maddy Larson

Shoreline City Council: John Ramsdell

Monday, June 21, 2021

John Ramsdell
Hello Shoreline residents.

My name is John Ramsdell, and I will be one of the new members of the Shoreline City Council in January.

I wish David Chen, my campaign opponent until last week, best of luck in his new position as legal counsel for Central City Concern in Portland Oregon.

A little more about me: I moved from New Hampshire to Seattle in 1994, after several trips to the Pacific Northwest.

The first trip was as best man at my college roommate’s outdoor wedding at Magnuson Park. As an avid skier, sailor and backpacker, it did not take me long to fall in love with the area. A foretelling of my eventual move decades later, I became a fan of the Seahawks as a kid during the Steve Largent, Curt Warner, Dave Craig era.

Shortly after arriving in Seattle, I completed my Master’s of Clinical Psychology in 1999 and worked for nine years at the City of Seattle Aging and Disability Services providing social work outreach to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities, as well as providing counseling to Veterans experiencing depression.

In 2010 I accepted a behavioral health counseling position with Evergreen Hospital where I worked as the lead clinician on the prestigious Geriatric Regional Assessment Team for another nine years. For a year I worked as a behavioral health specialist with foster children and foster to adopt in crisis while completing my second master’s degree in public administration.

In my current role as a clinical account executive at First Choice Health’s EAP program I provide and manage behavioral health services to over 60,000 employees in more than 150 organizations.

Since I was a little boy going door to door collecting donations from neighbors in an orange Oxfam box, I have been interested in making my community a better place to live.

This principle has been a constant theme in my life, which I have continued to practice as a resident in Westminster Triangle over the last 12 years. One of my recent volunteer accomplishments included initiating and shepherding the acquisition of a neighbor’s lot to be the future Westminster Park.

I encourage the reader to visit my campaign website at www.electjohnramsdell.com to see a complete account of my volunteer accomplishments in Shoreline and my issue statements, including the expansion of open park space, affordable housing, police reform and the environment.

Finally, I want to express my sincere hope that residents will feel comfortable coming to me to express their concerns about our community. I may not always agree, but I can promise that you will receive my respect and attention.

Correction: He began work at Evergreen Hospital in 2010
