Richmond Beach Community Association's Candidates Forum
Tuesday, October 10, 7:00pm
Ricmond Beach Congregational Church

All the candidates for Shoreline political offices have been invited to the Richmond Beach Community Association's annual Candidates Forum. This is in the place of the October public meeting -- Tuesday, October 10 -- but starting at 7:00pm.

The Candidates Forum puts the office seekers before the public so they can personally make their pitches, and the audience has the opportunity to put questions to the politicians in a moderated Q / A session. In addition, there is informal time where people can interact with the candidates one on one.

With four city council positions, two school board races, Ronald Wastewater and two fire commissioner positions, it will be a full evening.

The RBCA has decided to concentrate on the local races; there are other forums in the area that concentrate on county positions such as Executive and Sheriff. However, the political parties and spokespeople for those other offices and advocates for ballot measures are welcome to be on site and mingle during the informal meet and greet.

Those running unopposed, which include Councilman Will Hall, current Mayor Chris Roberts, Ronald Wastewater’s Bob Ransom and Shoreline Fire Commissioners Jon Kennison and David Harris, will have the opportunity to share their views and discuss their plans.

Vying for Shoreline School Board are Heather Fralick and Jill Brady (open Position 2) and incumbent David Wilson and Steven J. Pollack (Position 3).

The contested city council seats pit Susan Chang against Carolyn Ahlgreen for Position 5 and Keith McGlashan and Jin-Ah Kim for Position 1.

The Board of Commissioners for Ronald Wastewater sees a tussle between Wes Brandon, currently finishing the term of the late Arne Lind, and challenger Paul Barrera.

The forum will be held in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, located at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue NW.

Shoreline residents turned out on a brisk fall Tuesday evening September 15 to hear all candidates for the Shoreline City Council positions, contested and uncontested, respond to questions from the audience. With time for informal talk before and after, citizens were able to discern the differences between candidates in order to make an informed choice in the coming election.

The audience got a first-hand look at the candidates

Many of the questions dealt with the proposed changes to 145th, as well as the light rail station and rezoning. There were questions about property values and taxes. Low income housing was covered and the preservation of single family homes was a popular topic for questions from the audience. A discussion on crime praised the new Shoreline Watch but mentioned the need for more police in our neighborhoods.

The forum was run by a volunteer committee from the Briarcrest and Ridgecrest neighborhoods and moderated by Sarah Kaye. The Shoreline Area News was a cosponsor. The event was held at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Shoreline.

REMINDER: 32nd District candidates, Superior-Court candidates at Tuesday Richmond Beach forum

Monday, July 23, 2012

By Evan Smith

Tuesday is the primary-election candidates’ forum at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church.

Five candidates for two 32nd District legislative positions and six candidates for three King-County-Superior-Court positions will appear at the forum.

The forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church at the corner of Northwest Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue Northwest. It is in Pilgrim Hall in the basement of the Church.

One set of legislative candidates is incumbent Democratic 32nd District State Rep. Ruth Kagi of Shoreline and her two Republican opponents, Eric Alvey of Seattle and Robert Reedy of Mountlake Terrace. The other is incumbent 32nd District State Rep. Cindy Ryu of Shoreline and her one Republican opponent, Randy Hayden of Edmonds. In each case, the top two vote getters in the Aug. 7 primary advance to the Nov. 6 general election.

With redistricting, the District still includes Shoreline. Woodway, south Edmonds and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County but no longer includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore or the north outskirts of Kirkland, but instead includes Lynnwood, part of Mountlake Terrace and part of northwest Seattle.

One of the Superior Court contests matches attorney Hong Tran and Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Sean O'Donnell.

Another race matches incumbent Judge Doug North and Redmond City Councilwoman Kimberly Allen.

A third matches attorney Judy Ramseyer and Senior Deputy Prosecutor Gary Ernsdorff.

In all three, a candidate who gets a majority in the primary wins without running in the general election.

Five 32nd District candidates, six Superior-Court candidates at Tuesday Richmond Beach forum

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

By Evan Smith

Five candidates for two 32nd District legislative positions and six candidates for three King-County-Superior-Court positions will appear at a primary candidates' forum Tuesday.

The forum is scheduled for the Richmond Beach Congregational Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 24.

Kagi is seeking her seventh two-year term in the Legislature, Ryu her second term.

With redistricting, the District still includes Shoreline, Woodway, south Edmonds and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County but no longer includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore or the north outskirts of Kirkland, but instead includes Lynnwood, part of Mountlake Terrace and part of northwest Seattle.

One of the Superior Court contests matches attorney Hong Tran and Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Sean O'Donnell.

Another race matches three-term incumbent Judge Doug North and Redmond City Councilwoman Kimberly Allen.

A third matches attorney Judy Ramseyer and Senior Deputy Prosecutor Gary Ernsdorff.

Candidates in a three-way Superior-Court contest and those in a four-way contest will not be part of the forum. In those races, a candidate who gets a majority in the primary wins without appearing on the November ballot. If no one gets a majority, the top two primary vote getters run off in November.

The other 48 King-County Superior-Court positions have only one candidate each. In those cases, the one candidate wins without running in either August or November.

The Tuesday forum is in Pilgrim Hall in the basement of the Congregational Church at the corner of Northwest Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue Northwest.

A Rotary Forum for LFP Council Candidates - 2011

Sunday, October 23, 2011

By Marjorie Ando

A short Council candidate forum was held at the Rotary meeting, on Wednesday, October 12, in front of a crowd of interested Rotarians and LFP voters.

Bob Edwardsen served as moderator, setting forth the questions and handling timing for each candidate’s answers and rebuttal. Before beginning the session, he called everyone's attention to Rotary's Four Way Test that we follow in our own lives of Service Above Self and in our work in the community and worldwide.

Each candidate gave a short introduction about themselves:
  • LFP Rotarians: Incumbent, Ed Sterner; candidate Chuck Paulsen: and candidate Tom French,:
  • LFP citizens: Incumbent, Catherine Stanford, and Brian Cathcart and Jeff Johnson.

The forum then proceeded to the several questions asked of each candidate and his or her opponent with their followup answers and rebuttals. The questions and answers were thought-provoking and will be of help for many of the listeners as they determine their voting decisions. It was interesting to see how many issues were cleared up during the civil discourse and the search for the truth of each issue.
