Tuesday forum in Richmond Beach includes county offices and school board

Monday, October 17, 2011

By Tom Peterson

Tuesday evening, October 18, 2011, brings the second of the Candidates Forums sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association. Candidates for Shoreline School Board, Port of Seattle, King County Director of Elections, Assessor, and Justices will present themselves and answer questions.

This is a moderated event, with questions only accepted in writing and edited to clarity, pertinence, fairness, and to consolidate duplicates. There is a sound system, so everyone can hear. The Forum will be from 7 pm to 9 pm in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, 1501 NW 195th Street (corner of Richmond Beach Road and 15th Ave NW), Shoreline 98177. All are welcome, not just Richmond Beach residents or RBCA members!

City Council candidates address the crowd at the RBCA forum

Forum #1, last Tuesday, featuring those running for City Council, Fire Commissioner and Wastewater Board, filled all the seats, and was a lively and efficient evening. While most anticipated that the ongoing Point Wells development controversy would dominate the discussion, the somewhat-under-the-radar plan by the City of Shoreline to take over Ronald Wastewater in 2017, supposedly without a public vote, exploded into a major controversy and went to the front burner of election issues for both the Wastewater Commissioner and City Council hopefuls.

LFP Rotary hears from mayoral candidates

Friday, October 14, 2011

By Marjorie Ando

A short Mayoral candidate forum was held at the LFP Rotary Club meeting, on Wednesday, October 12, in front of a crowd of interested Rotarians and LFP voters.

Bob Edwardsen was the moderator, setting forth the questions and handling the timing for each candidate. Before beginning the session, he called everyone's attention to the Four Way Test that the Rotarians follow in their Service Above Self work in the community and worldwide.

Each candidate, Dwight Thompson and Mary Jane Goss, introduced themselves and then the forum proceeded to the questions asked of each candidate with their followup rebuttals. The questions and answers were thought-provoking and will be of help for many of the listeners as they make their decision of how they will vote.

Next week, the club will hear from the six candidates for City Council seats. It promises to be another packed house of members, the candidates, and guests.

List of remaining candidate forums before the election

Saturday, October 8, 2011

Here are your opportunities to hear from the candidates for public office in person:

The links will give you the details of where the forums are being held and some details about the format.  Usually there is a short introductory speech from each candidate, followed by prepared questions from the sponsoring organization.  Some forums take questions from the audience.  Candidates are usually given a little time for a wrap-up speech.  The evening forums all start at 7pm; the earlier start time is an opportunity to browse the candidate literature and talk to them informally.  Some forums leave time after the formal event to talk to candidates informally.

Richmond Beach stages two candidate forums October 11, October 18

Sunday, October 2, 2011

By Tom Petersen

In order to hear more from office seekers and field more audience questions, the RBCA Candidates Forum will be expanded to two nights this year. The Forum is one of the longest-running and best-attended events of its kind in the area, and candidates for all offices say they relish visiting such an active, aware and interested neighborhood. All candidates for all offices appearing on the ballot for Richmond Beach residents have been invited.

The Candidates Forums are held in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue NW and start at the special, early time of 7 p.m.

The Forums are a panel presentation format with moderated questions and answers. Candidates for the same office make their statements, then respond to questions, lending a “debate” flavor. The questions are screened for relevance, fairness, interest, and clarity. Similar questions from multiple audience members are consolidated.

Tuesday, October 11: Shoreline City Council and Public Works Night

The first forum features the races for Shoreline City Council. Council races are always hotly contested in Shoreline, but this year the stakes – and emotions – are extremely high for Richmond Beach. The current councilmembers issued a “Letter of Intent” to the Point Wells developer, expressing the desire to negotiate mitigations and allow the project to proceed, with the hope that Point Wells might annex to Shoreline someday. Richmond Beach residents swamped a public hearing in August, a Council meeting in September, and the RBCA meeting that same month, overwhelmingly demanding firmer opposition in the form of litigation or other delaying tactics. Incumbents have been at pains to explain that the City has limited and unpleasant options, filled with hard-to-explain nuances. Meanwhile, some challengers have come out squarely against a Point Wells project, while others have pledged solidarity with Richmond Beach but without specific plans of action.

There are also several lively races for Fire Commissioner and the Ronald Wastewater Board of Directors, so the sparks should fly all night on the 11th!

Tuesday, October 18: School Board, County Posts, and Ballot Measures

The second forum’s centerpiece is the three Shoreline School Board elections. The excitement of the high school remodels is tempered by ominous budget news out of Olympia that will squeeze operating budgets and teacher salaries in every district. The public expects the school district to maintain its high standards and full programs at the same time the state keeps issuing unfunded mandates. The district is also amid some reassessment of its student technology programs, which have been generally popular with students but have gotten mixed reviews from parents and have yielded mixed results.

Representatives for the various levies, bonds, and initiatives will be on hand to speak for, against, or on an “information only” basis and distribute literature. Various candidates for various other offices, boards, commissions, and posts (consult the sample ballot) will be on hand to make statements and answer questions, but the final list was not confirmed at press time. Candidates for county-wide posts often have numerous date conflicts.

Richmond Beach Candidates forum Tuesday, October 12

Monday, October 11, 2010

The public is invited to the Richmond Beach Candidates Forum, Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 7 pm. It is in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, at the corner of 15th Ave NW and Richmond Beach Road in Shoreline. Every candidate for every race on the Shoreline ballot will be there in person, except the US Senate contestants, who are sending spokespeople. There will be a sound system.

The format is to feature each race in segments, rather than have all the candidates sitting at the dais the whole time. Most candidates are expected to stay and do the back of the room meet and greet and talk to reporters. In addition, all of the ballot propositions will have tables set up where spokespeople will answer questions and hand out literature.

Each candidate will have roughly 5 minutes to make a statement, followed by a few questions that have been sent in from the audience. Questions are screened for pertinence and to eliminate redundancies or consolidate similar questions.

The forum is sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association.
