Dandylyon Drama summer camps; all ages special needs camp

Friday, July 10, 2020

At this difficult time when theatre organizations are closing down (permanently or temporarily) due to COVID-19 and social distancing restrictions, Dandylyon Drama has found creative ways to keep its robust summer theatre program going strong.

Founded in 2009, Dandylyon Drama brings theatre programs into multiple schools in North King County, and has run successful summer camps for several seasons.

The organization has grown exponentially over ten years and it is ready to take on the challenge of bringing arts education and programming to kids during a time when so many outlets are closed.

This summer Dandylyon Drama is offering online, in-person, and even a hybrid of both, for kids ages four to 18, including a camp for those with special needs.

“Our mission is to grow more creative, compassionate, and courageous people through quality and accessible arts education,” says Dandylyon Drama founder and Artistic Director Melani Lyons.
“We feel fortunate that we’re able to really turn this mission into action by finding ways to keep kids actively involved in theatre-making during these complicated times. It is definitely taking creativity, compassion, and courage from teaching artists, staff, campers, and families to make this happen. I’m proud that we are being trusted to offer safe and meaningful summer options to the community.”

The camps being offered this summer include fully online camps (via Zoom) for ages 4-6 which include circus, Star Wars, and Superhero themes, and two full productions for ages 8-14.

All online camps end with virtual performances for family and friends. Modified physically-distanced outdoor camps are available for ages 6-10 throughout the summer in Shoreline’s Cromwell Park.

Dandylyon Drama’s staff has worked closely with Shoreline officials to create a safe and healthy environment for all campers. Older campers (ages 12-18) can enjoy a hybrid camp going both online and in-person.

In addition to these camps, Dandylyon Drama is offering a Special Needs Online Film Club (currently underway) which brings an online arts program to people of all ages with special needs.

This camp is an extension of Parachute Players which, under the fiscal sponsorship and mentorship of Dandylyon Drama, produces immersive, multi-sensory theatrical experiences for young people with disabilities under the belief that ALL people need and deserve equitable access to quality arts experiences. Future special-needs online programming will be announced soon by Dandylyon Drama and Parachute Players.

Of bringing the online camp to those with special needs, Parachute Players director Maddie Napel says “It’s been unbelievably life-affirming to connect with this ensemble of young adults online.
"I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well this group does connecting over Zoom— some students have really opened up and participated more than they had in person. I think it takes away some performance anxiety to be in our own homes with family nearby to support.”

Dandylyon Drama’s success with the online camps comes from multiple hours of practice to get it right, working through trial and error to find the best technology and the strongest virtual activities that will keep the campers interested, engaged, and fulfilled.

Along with focusing on the solid online camps, Dandylyon Drama’s teaching artists have worked tirelessly to create a safe outdoor camp experience that will bring the joy and fun of traditional summer camp while following strict social distancing and safety guidelines. An outline of the outdoor camp’s safety plan can be found online.

Information and registration for Dandylyon Drama’s 2020 Summer Camps can be found on their website. Dandylyon Drama can be followed on Facebook and Instagram (@dandylyondrama).

Dandylyon Drama’s mission is to grow more creative, compassionate, and courageous people through quality and accessible performing arts education.

Shoreline Recreation: Registration for New Summer Camps Opens Soon

Friday, May 22, 2020

The Parent Handbook has changed

From the City of Shoreline,
Parks and Recreation

To meet the health and safety guidelines set by Washington State Department of Health and Public Health – Seattle and King County, we have had to redesign and limit participants to our summer day camps.

This required us to cancel previous camp registrations and open new registration for the new camp offerings

This was not an easy decision for us to make. However, to help keep our community healthy, we simply cannot operate as we have in the past.

We have developed a new set of offerings for Summer Camp 2020.

Campers previously registered will have priority in registering for the new camps.

Registration will open on:

1. Tuesday, May 26 at 8:00am for Shoreline residents who had their registration cancelled.

2. Thursday, May 28 at 8:00am for Lake Forest Park residents who had their registration cancelled.

3. Monday, June 1 at 8:00am for general registration.

Information about the new camp opportunities and registration HERE

A few important things to know about the new camp offerings:
  • Camps have been restructured to meet the public health guidelines to minimize the spread of COVID-19;
  • Fewer camp opportunities are available so not everyone who was previously registered will get a space in the new camps;
  • Fees have been adjusted to account for added staffing and supply costs associated with new health and safety requirements;
  • There will be no field trips and no swim programs;
  • Parents/guardians will be required to submit a health check questionnaire each day for each camper certifying they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms;
  • All staff and Camp participants will be required to wear face coverings at all times;
  • A new liability waiver that includes provisions for COVID-19 will be required upon registration; and
  • The parent handbook has changed and should be read carefully. This will be sent out with your registration confirmation.

While these are uncertain and unsettled times, the Shoreline recreation program staff are excited to be able to offer these camp opportunities and look forward to having a fun summer with all the youth and teens that can join us.

Shoreline cancels summer events and classes; summer day camp offerings reduced to meet health and safety guidelines

Thursday, May 7, 2020

Celebrate Shoreline and all summer events are cancelled for 2020
Photo by Steven H. Robinson

From the City of Shoreline

The City of Shoreline regrets to announce that our annual array of citywide summer celebrations, neighborhood events, and recreation classes will be cancelled this year in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Popular summer camps are being reconfigured
Current registrations are being cancelled

We will also need to redesign and limit participants to our summer day camps to meet health and safety guidelines.

This will require us to cancel current camp registrations and open new registration for the new camp offerings.

This was not an easy decision for us to make. Residents throughout the community look forward to these events every year. And our summer camps are extremely popular.

However, in order to help keep our community healthy, we simply cannot operate as we have in the past. During these unprecedented times, we have been taking and will continue to take the steps needed to ensure the health and safety of Shoreline residents, businesses, and employees. We have modified our operations to follow county, state, and federal disease-prevention guidelines.

While we are canceling all current camp registrations, we WILL be offering some summer camps, structured to meet health and safety needs.

Scheduled camps have been cancelled
Different types of camps will be offered

As a result, there will be fewer camp spaces this summer. We will reach out to all current camp registrants via email alerting them to the new camp offerings soon. The City will provide full refunds to current camp registrants for any fees already collected. We will also post information on the City’s website as it becomes available and will alert the public with more information on new camp registration in the next few weeks.

While we won’t be able to gather for our annual celebrations and events, we are also looking at ways to ensure we can still celebrate

We are working with our partner organizations and neighborhood associations to find ways to capture some of the community and creativity of summer events through other means. Now more than ever it is important for us to make those community connections, even if they are done from a distance. We will keep you informed as we develop these alternative “gatherings” and encourage everyone to find a way to stay connected.

Children, youth and volunteers plan a fun week at Vacation Bible Adventure and Youth Basketball Clinic

Sunday, July 21, 2019

Children from throughout Shoreline and neighboring communities will learn about different wild animals during Vacation Bible Adventures at Berean Bible Church next week. Over 100 children come from throughout the community with the balance of some 40 from the church family.

Over 90 volunteers help throughout the week doing a variety of tasks. Volunteers come from throughout Shoreline, the eastside, Seattle, Edmonds, Lynnwood and as far as Everett and Marysville.

“Our volunteers are dedicated to helping each child feel special, regardless of what role they are serving in,” stated Suzy Bates, director of the annual VBA program.
“We have workers who provide snacks, help children do crafts or woodworking projects, play outdoor and indoor games, lead science and other hands-on activities. Some have administrative roles, but most are directly involved with sharing God's love with the children and providing encouragement,” Bates added.

Berean has offered VBA since the late 1960s at the church now celebrating its 55th year of serving the Shoreline area at the same location. Many of the volunteers are charter members of the church or have served since their youth when they, too, participated in the early years of VBA.

Two couples, Jerry and Sandie Johnson, along with Dave and Sharon Amundsen, have probably volunteered at VBA the most years.

Sandie has helped in the crafts for different age groups. “I want the kids to have a good time, doing the games and crafts,” she said. “It’s always a rewarding experience.”

The Johnsons and Amundsens are long-time volunteers

“I’ve done everything from teaching how to build a fire and cook something to helping organize and obtain the materials used in various projects, including construction of the water blasters,” Jerry stated with enthusiasm. He has taught children to clean fish, build outdoor rain shelters, assemble woodworking kits and led many, many outdoor games.
“We try to make the games and activities relate to the theme of each year’s Vacation Bible Adventure. It’s wonderful to see the kids learn and develop friendships,” he continued. “I love the opportunity to help the kids” he added.

“Our congregation is dedicated to providing spiritual encouragement to children from our community,” added Bates. “The congregation volunteers not just during a week of VBA each summer but during our Wednesday evening children's club programs during the school year.”

The Vacation Bible Adventure begins next Monday, July 22 until Friday, July 26, 2019 and runs from 9:00am through noon. They are still taking registrations, so go here for a registration form or contact Suzy Bates at Berean Bible Church at 206-363-1466 or e-mail office@berean-shoreline.org for more information.

The church is located at 2345 N 185th at 1st Ave NE diagonally across from the Shoreline Center.
