International Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years as a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative

In that time, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free - Afghanistan and Pakistan.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

Shorecrest high school Interact students volunteered to raise awareness about the need to eradicate polio polio in the world.

Thank you to the entire community for your support. See you next year.

Starbucks unionized workers to strike on Red Cup Day Thursday November 16, 2023

Thursday, November 16, 2023

SEATTLE - Nearly 380 Starbucks workers from 14 stores in nine cities across Washington State will strike on November 16, 2023 joining the coast-to-coast “Red Cup Rebellion,” demanding the coffee giant stop illegally refusing to bargain with baristas over staffing, scheduling and other issues.

The strike comes on Red Cup Day, when the company hands out tens of thousands of free reusable cups, one of its busiest customer traffic days of the year.

Workers in Seattle, Shoreline, Bellingham, Marysville, Everett, Olympia, Tumwater, Vancouver, and Redmond are planning to participate in the Red Cup Day Strikes, and workers in three of those stores have already walked out in advance of Red Cup Day.

In addition to the 14 stores going on strike, community allies and local unions are hosting consumer-education events at 36 non-union Starbucks locations across WA state in Seattle, Bellevue, Renton, Tukwila, Tumwater, Olympia, Everett, Marysville, Kent, Lake Stevens, Spokane, Kennewick, Vancouver, Redmond and Shoreline.

Workers at the Starbucks at Gateway Plaza, 185th and Aurora will be among the strikers.

As part of the strike, workers will demand Starbucks turn off mobile ordering on future promotion days, which company executives are scheduling with increasing frequency.

“Red Cup Day is a notoriously difficult day for Starbucks Workers,” said Seattle Roastery barista Moonie Atchley, “because we’re always understaffed. Lines are long, customers are frustrated and angry, and workers get shouted at, and sometimes even injured from being forced to make drinks at a frenetic pace for hours on end.

"Starbucks just announced record-breaking profits: they absolutely CAN pay baristas and staff stores better. Baristas shouldn’t be sustaining lifelong injuries, or struggling to keep a roof over our heads, just so Starbucks can keep making record profits.

"We make the coffee that makes Starbucks rich. So, hundreds of us are going on strike on Red Cup Day because they’d be nowhere without our labor.
"When we fight, we win.”

Lake City Walgreen's to close; so far no other drug store closures nearby

We still have our Bartells (although this is a generic photo)
Rite Aid, which owns Bartell's, has declared bankruptcy, which appears to be a good thing as it keeps the corporation afloat while they figure out their finances.

Figuring out their finances includes closing stores.

So far, our nearby stores have escaped, including the Bartells at Gateway Plaza at 185th and Aurora; Lake City at 125th and Lake City Way; Westgate in Edmonds.

None of the Rite Aid closures have hit us either.

Now word comes of a Walgreen's closing in Lake City (143rd and Lake City Way) which feels a little too close for comfort. There have been no national stories about financial problems with the chain, so this one was a surprise.

A reader has reminded me that the Rite Aid in the Ranch 99 shopping center at 228th and Hwy 99 closed last month. There has been a drug store at that location for decades. Their customers have been referred to the Westgate Bartells in Edmonds.

Time to go buy your Halloween candy - we need to keep our local stores thriving!

About Copperworks Distilling Company ~ 2018 Distillery of the Year

Opened in 2013, Copperworks Distilling Company is an award-winning craft distillery, tasting room and gift shop located in the high-traffic waterfront tourist district of downtown Seattle. The distillery produces small-batch American Single Malt Whiskey, a series of gins, and vodka, all from malted barley.

Copperworks was founded by co-owners/distillers Jason Parker and Micah Nutt ~ both craft brewers with more than 30 years of experience in the alcohol industry. They built the distillery to answer the question: “How would spirits taste if they were distilled form superior craft beer (without the hops) instead of the typical methods of ingredients of conventional distilleries?”

The answer led Copperworks to become a pioneer in producing American Single Malt Whiskey, a fast-growing spirits category with substantial national and international market interest. Copperworks’ spirits are distilled in traditional copper stills that were specifically created in Scotland for the distillery, and for the distillation of each individual spirit.

Copperworks’ high-quality craft spirits have been recognized with multiple national and international awards and the company was named the 2018 Distillery of the Year by the American Distilling Institute. In addition, Copperworks’ whiskey and gin have won Double-Gold medals and scored 94 – 96 points in prestigious spirits competitions. Copperworks spirits are found on the shelves of bars, restaurants, and retail stores through Washington State.

Copperworks also offers tastings, tours, and other events focused on enjoying and learning about fine distilled spirits, including its ‘hands-on’ single-malt whiskey blending workshop.

Copperworks was voted Best Distillery in 2023 Best In The PNW contest presented by The Seattle Times
