Pilot project to strengthen regional Korean-owned small businesses: Bridging the Digital Divide

OneEastside SPARK and its partners today announced the launch of the Get Your Business Online Pilot Project targeted at strengthening Korean-owned small businesses in King County.

Funded by a grant from the Washington State Microenterprise Association (WSMA), the pilot project aims to increase the number of businesses with an online presence.

OneEastside SPARK is partnering with BigHug/Korean American Resource Center (KARC) and Restart Partners, including a team from the University of Washington’s Communication Leadership program on this community-driven project.

Surviving the effects of pandemic and current economic uncertainty requires the knowledge of, and access to, digital tools.

The “Get Your Business Online” Program will help business owners by empowering them to build sustainable digital marketing skills. Staff and volunteers are developing in-language, step-by-step, training modules that will be delivered in-person. A series of short, in-language instructional videos will also be produced and shared publicly on YouTube.

"Around 50% of the Korean-owned small businesses that we assisted in Washington state are closed because of COVID-19," said Lori Wada, Executive Director of BigHug/KARC.
“Many of these businesses were lacking or unaware of digital marketing tools that are readily available at no or low cost. Having a digital presence is vital to accessing today’s digitally savvy shoppers and strengthening their resiliency.”

“Our digital economy has created many barriers to business ownership and success, especially for non-English speaking entrepreneurs,” said WSMA Executive Director, Lisa Smith,

“WSMA is excited to support OneEastside SPARK and their collaborating partners on the Get Your Business Online pilot that helps businesses overcome these hurdles and thrive in this age of technology.”

Visit https://karc.bighug.org and https://oneeastside.org/spark for more information or sign up for the upcoming information sessions at https://bit.ly/get-online123.

Support for the Get Your Business Online pilot project was provided in part by the Washington State Microenterprise Association (WSMA), made possible by the Washington State Department of Commerce, and the OneEastside Foundation.

Starbucks statement in response to Shoreline store unionization

Saturday, February 11, 2023

Starbucks provided the following statement in response to the unionization of the Gateway Plaza store at 185th and Aurora in Shoreline (see previous story):

We are listening to and learning from the partners in these stores as we always do across the country. From the beginning, we’ve been clear in our belief that we are better together as partners, without a union between us, and that conviction has not changed.
We remain committed to our partners and will continue to work together, side-by-side, to make Starbucks a company that works for everyone.

We will continue to show up and be ready to bargain in good faith and have urged Workers United to do the same.

Shoreline Starbucks workers vote to unionize

Friday, February 10, 2023

SEATTLE – Starbucks Workers United continues to expand the nationwide coalition of workers fighting for better working conditions and a seat at the table.

On January 26, 2023, workers at the 185th and Aurora Starbucks in Gateway Plaza in Shoreline won union representation in a vote of 18-1 with 100% turnout,

This is the 1st store in Shoreline and the 10th store in the Seattle area, the city of Starbucks’ corporate headquarters, to unionize.

Workers stated concerns are hour cuts, inadequate staffing, disregard of partner safety, and refusal to bargain with the union in good faith.

“We started organizing our store knowing that we weren't getting a fair deal from Starbucks, but the disparities in compensation just between baristas was shocking to discover.
"We're hoping that, through bargaining, we can secure a contract that guarantees us the pay equity and decency that should be the baseline for all partners," said Carl Addison (he/him), a partner at the Aurora store.

Gabbie Perine (she/her), another partner at the newly-unionized store, said, “As baristas, who are the face of the company and the ones who build meaningful relationships with the community everyday, we’ve earned the right to demand that we be treated fairly. we are not disposable and we deserve better."

Starbucks Workers United has seen more new unions form in 12 months than any U.S. company in the last 20 years – 270+ stores representing more than 7,000 workers – partners around the country continue to diligently organize new workers.

Monday, January 30, 2023

Clifford Sullam, GBCIB Manager of the Shoreline branch presents a $5,000 check to Banchero Disability Partners. Accepting the check are Farzana Rehman, CFO/COO, (left) and Carol Salter, Executive Director. Photo by BDP

Banchero Disability Partners (BDP) dedicates energy and funds to promoting healthy living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by enhancing clients’ medical, physical and emotional hierarchy of needs.

The mission of BDP focuses on eliminating discrimination against individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their local communities. Banchero Disability Partners empowers adults with developmental disabilities so that they may realize their potential, achieve their goals, and be active and contributing members of their communities.

We envision a future where people with developmental disabilities are accepted, integrated, respected, and take an active part in living their lives to their highest potential.

Staff teach tenants with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) how to shop for nutritious ingredients, prepare meals, balance checkbooks, pay bills, and clean their apartments. They identify activities in the community where they can integrate with those who may not have had exposure to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Their staffing model provides a 1:2 ratio, with a few 1:1 services for those with significant disabilities.

We strive to facilitate feelings of belonging and fulfillment, create a safe home, and emotionally meet their hierarchy of needs.

BDP currently owns two apartment complexes, one in North Seattle and one in Shoreline, where they house individuals with I/DD and low-income individuals who are refugees or immigrants.

On January 25, 2023 GBCIB Charitable Foundation representative, Clifford Sullam, local bank Manager, presented BDP with a $5,000 grant to further our mission to Carol Salter, Executive Director, and Farzana Rehman, CFO/COO.
The BDP Board of Directors and senior administrators are committed to providing the most accurate and updated education and training to our staff who provide medical and emotional support to the 34 adults we serve. Funds received will allow us to access training for staff and clients and will include: mental, emotional, nutritional, and physical health interventions.

The GBC International Bank (GBCIB) Charitable Foundation’s goal is to support organizations that offer health care, human services, and education for youth and the elderly. GBCI is a full-service community business bank established in 1976 as the “First Women’s Bank”, whose mission was to fight discrimination in the banking industry on the basis of sex.

The Shoreline branch is located at 16001 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Since then they have expanded that non-discrimination model to the present Charitable Foundation supporting initiatives for healthy living for seniors, educating youth, and supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their local communities.

"BDP’s similar mission to GBCIB Foundation is the reason we chose GBCIB as our full banking partner."

GoFundMe set up for Shoreline business owner injured in violent mugging

Tuesday, January 17, 2023

C.E. Computer has been in business for 10 years in Shoreline

Chris Esponda, owner of the C.E. Computer Repair at 20001 Aurora Ave N Suite E, Shoreline, WA 98133 across from Aurora Village, has closed his shop while he recovers from brain injuries suffered in a horrific attack on December 30, 2022.

He was just leaving his shop after hours when he was attacked by a mugger who apparently was looking for money to buy drugs at a nearby cannabis shop.

The mugger, screaming racial slurs, attacked him repeatedly, so violently that Chris has a brain bleed, seizures, and might need surgery for internal injuries. He has moved in with family while he recovers.

Chris asks for patience while he contacts
clients with devices in the shop.
I’m so very grateful for your business and support these past ten years as I built C.E. Computer Repair from the ground up, and I look forward to providing you again with computer repair services as soon as I am able.
Unfortunately, however, it looks like that could be at least several months or longer. I thank you so much for your patience as I reach out to those of you with devices currently in the shop being repaired.
For those who have asked how you can offer support, thank you from the bottom of my heart. My community has started a GoFundMe to help with my recovery and I’m grateful to anyone who is able to contribute or share around:

Gene Juarez Academy closes Mountlake Terrace location at Gateway Place

Saturday, December 31, 2022

By Doug Petrowski

The Gene Juarez Academy North Campus, located at 24255 Van Ry Blvd. #A4 in Mountlake Terrace, is no more as the cosmetology training location has closed.

Crews were seen during the last week of December moving equipment and supplies out of the 15,000- square-foot commercial space and removing the outdoor signage.

The cosmetology school had been conducting classes at the location since 2013, when the cosmetology school moved its North Campus from Northgate to Mountlake Terrace.

“We made the difficult decision to close this campus and let our staff and students know fully 13 months ago,” said Katie Trent, CEO of Gene Juarez Salons and Spas and Gene Juarez Academy.
“In the ensuing year, we took care to graduate all currently enrolled students, with a handful transferring to our South campus to complete their remaining requirements for graduation. Our supportive and wonderful guests have been aware of our impending closure throughout this time.
“We are incredibly proud of our 10 years in the MLT location, and look forward to continuing our 36-year record of graduating skilled cosmetologists at our Federal Way campus.”

A letter at the front door of the former location states, “Gene Juarez Academy made the difficult decision to close the North Campus due to challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic as well as a decline in enrollment.” The letter says that Oct. 28 was the final day for guest services at the locale.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of the Gene Juarez Academy North Campus in Mountlake Terrace on Jan. 30, 2013, was attended by (L-R) City Councilmembers Kyoko Matsumoto Wright and Seaun Richards, Mayor Jerry Smith, Gene Juarez VP of Education Jerry Aher, North Campus Director Mindy Mignagna and Gene Juarez CEO Scott Missad. (Photo courtesy City of Mountlake Terrace)

The Academy North Campus conducted classes for cosmetology students enrolled in 13-month programs. The company boasted that the location had 110 training stations for the students and welcomed customers to receive hair, makeup and nail consultations and to have their hair cut, colored, permed or styled.

The opening of the Gene Juarez Academy North Campus in Mountlake Terrace was heralded by city leaders at the time as significant for the Gateway Plaza business district.

A ribbon-cutting event, attended by city officials and Gene Juarez Salon and Spa executives, was held at the location in January 2013 commemorating the training school’s opening.

AG Ferguson files lawsuits against three national pharmacy chains

Thursday, December 22, 2022

Photo by Stephen Foster on Unsplash
Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit today against Albertsons, Krogers and Rite Aid, whose pharmacy chains helped fuel Washington state’s opioid epidemic.

Ferguson asserts the pharmacies served as the last line of defense in the opioid supply chain and failed in their collective responsibility to prevent the overuse of opioid prescriptions.

Ferguson also announced today resolutions with five other companies that produced or sold opioids. This will bring Washington state’s total recoveries to more than $1.1 billion for funding opioid abatement and treatment programs.

These announced resolutions are not final until certain conditions are met: Each company will evaluate the number of states that join then decide whether to proceed with notices to local governments.

“Opioids tore apart Washington families, overburdened our health care system and caused an epidemic of addiction we are still struggling to contain,” Ferguson said.
“My office won a billion dollars to help fund recovery efforts, but I am not done. I will continue to hold accountable the corporations that enriched themselves off the suffering of Washington families.”

Clean air and the asphalt plant in Kenmore

Saturday, December 17, 2022

Asphalt plant in Kenmore
On October 26, 2022, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) issued a Final Order of Approval for a new permit for the Cadman Asphalt plant in Kenmore.

The permit includes new conditions for the plant, including air quality standards and testing.

On November 22, 2022, Cadman appealed the permit to the Pollution Control Hearings Board and filed a motion to “stay” (i.e. delay) the new permit conditions pending the appeal.

In December, the Kenmore City Council voted to file a petition to the Pollution Control Hearings Board for the City to intervene in the appeal, with the intent to assist Puget Sound Clean Air Agency in arguing for upholding the conditions of the permit.

The City’s request to intervene was granted. The Pollution Control Hearings Board will likely decide whether to approve or deny the stay some time in the second half of January 2023.

Thursday, December 15, 2022

SEATTLE — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today that he will sign onto a resolution with Walmart that will bring an estimated $62.6 million to Washington state.

“This is another important step in our fight for accountability for the opioid industry,” Ferguson said. “These resources will increase prevention efforts and help Washingtonians in need.”
Today’s announced resolution is not final until certain conditions are met:At least 43 states must join the resolution, and
