Orangetheory Fitness raising funds for Redmond's Motley Zoo Animal Rescue

Friday, December 9, 2022

Through December 19, 2022, Orangetheory Fitness’ 18 locations across Washington state are throwing down in a friendly competition to raise lifesaving funds for Motley Zoo Animal Rescue.

The non-profit organization based in Redmond, Washington, is dedicated to rehabilitating, caring for and securing safe homes for animals through a foster and education system. Since 2009, they have placed thousands of pets in loving homes and work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals and reach their goal of ending all neglect and abuse against them.

Although Motley Zoo is strong, they were recently displaced from their current building due to structural issues making it uninhabitable. As the facility also offers programs such as dog daycare, training, and boarding to the community and their adoptable dogs, their physical location has become an integral part of the rescue and community. Now more than ever, they need resources to find and create this new safe space.

The partnership was inspired by local “pawlanthropist” @Dash.Dog whose owner, Ande Edlund, is a long-time Orangetheory (OTF) member and animal advocate. With Ande and Dash behind us, OTF is committed to supporting community members – human and four-legged – in need.

This holiday season, OTF’s 18 Washington locations are competing to raise the most funds for their Motley Zoo animal in need. The campaign runs now through December 19, 2022.

Meet the adorable Motley Zoo Adoptable Roadies each location is working out to support and donate to a Motley Zoo animal at this link: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MTcwMDA0.

The Shoreline Orangetheory gym is in Gateway Plaza at 18336 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133.

7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Guests

7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Guests
From Westlake Ace Hardware

The holiday season is here, and homes everywhere are filling up with friends and family. But things like clogged drains, burned out light bulbs, leaking toilets, unwelcome guests like mice, and slick sidewalks are a fact of life – and it can happen at the worst times.

Westlake Ace Hardware suggests these simple tips and products to keep on hand to make household repairs quick and simple – and let you get back to enjoying the holidays!

  1. Give your walk a clean sweep – Sweep, shovel, or use a leaf blower on walkways before guests arrive so they won’t accidentally slip or pick up debris on their shoes to track through your home. If the walks are icy, apply ice melt.
  2. Light it up – Buy a supply of energy-efficient LED light bulbs that shed a softer light and show true whites inside a home. Also, consider adding a nightlight to bathrooms or dark hallways so guests can find their way in an unfamiliar space at night.
  3. Take a shower in the guest bathroom – Test shower heads you never use to make sure the water pressure is up to your standards. If not, consider soaking the shower head in CLR or a mixture of vinegar, baking soda, and water to remove mineral deposits. If that doesn’t help, it’s a quick fix to replace the showerhead with a new one.
  4. Banish bathroom blunders – The time for a bathroom emergency is NOT while you have a house full of guests. Check your house’s bathroom sinks, faucets, and toilets in advance. Tighten leaky faucets, clear drains of clogs, and fix the toilet valve or flapper if it’s continually running or not filling properly. If you don’t already have a plunger and sewer snake on hand, those can be invaluable tools. Insta-Flow is a great way to quickly unclog sinks.
  5. Freshen the air – Replace the furnace filter so the air inside your home doesn’t smell dusty and stale. If the air inside already feels dry, consider purchasing a humidifier to add moisture to the air for everyone’s comfort.
  6. A touch of fresh paint – Starting a major renovation is not advised during the holidays, but it can be a good time to paint over chips and nicks on doors, door frames, cabinets, and baseboards. Just be sure to leave several days for the paint to dry before guests arrive.
  7. Uninvite unwanted furry guests – Unwanted guests like mice and rats may try to make their way into your home to escape winter’s cold and enjoy the warm and dry environment.
    1. If your fireplace wood is stacked right next to the house, consider moving it away from the foundation and outer walls. Minimize clutter in the garage so pests can’t find places to nest.
    2. Keep tight-fitting lids on trash cans. Rinse recycling items before tossing in the bin to avoid tempting rodents with food remnants.
    3. If you’re storing dog or cat food in the garage, make sure containers are sealed tight. And keep the garage door closed to prevent rodents from walking right in.
    4. An adult mouse can squeeze through a dime-sized hole, so seal off all possible access points throughout the house with steel wool.
    5. A non-toxic, poison-free option, the Victor PestChaser Plug-In Electronic Rodent Repeller drives away rodents by emitting a highly irritating noise that only rodents can hear.
Westlake Ace Hardware is located on the upper level of Town Center in Lake Forest Park, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE. There is also an Ace Tweedy and Pop in Lake City, 3040 NE 127th St, Seattle, WA 98125

Why shop local?

Fun art showcases and market events support local crafters and artists. By sharing their delightfully creative, unique work with us they directly vitalize our economy.

In addition, shopping local can reduce emissions from air freight and the delivery vehicles. Greenhouse gasses GHG are emitted by all cars and trucks that are fueled with fossil fuels. These Greenhouse gasses can stay in the atmosphere for a century. It is as if the GHG are a blanket surrounding the earth. This results in warmer climate, rising seas and can affect our health and our ecosystem

Looking for something to keep you warm?

Monday, October 24, 2022

By Pam Cross

After too much sun, our lovely rainy fall days are here. Feeling like something to keep you warm?

These cuties arrived today. Too young for a forever-home, they are currently being fostered.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill organization located near the border of Seattle and Shoreline, at 14717 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133. (501c3 #91-2041961.) SAFe Rescue takes in homeless cats and kittens, gives them the care they need to recover, and finds them loving homes.

An extensive network of community volunteers and foster families helps the rescue carry out its mission and save more lives.

Volunteer jobs are available for all skills from cleaning and doing laundry, kitty care, behavior training, retail and desk reception, adoption counseling, office support, to veterinary support, and transporting rescue cats. Learn more and sign up at SeattleAreaFelineRescue.org/volunteer

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) Adoption Center and shelter facility will move to a new Shoreline location at Ballinger Village Shopping Center which will more than double the Rescue’s current physical footprint.

In addition to a busy feline Adoption Center, the new location will be home to a new Community Medical Program offering subsidized veterinary care to income-qualified pet owners.

If you’re a pet owner, you know that veterinary costs have increased. You also know that a feline pet can provide great enjoyment and comfort for the young and the old. This became more apparent during the pandemic when we were largely confined to our homes.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, SAFe Rescue, has a food pantry for cats. You can drop off food your fussy cat decides is not to their liking, and pick up another one to try.
Give cats and kittens a life-saving second chance with this kind and generous no-kill shelter in Shoreline.

Town and Country Market celebrates 65 years Saturday with treats and cake

Friday, October 21, 2022

For 65 years, Town and Country (T/C) Markets has been searching the world – and our own neighborhoods — to bring you new ways to experience the joys of food, and share it with the people you love.

Join us in celebrating our 65th anniversary with a one-day-only open house at all markets on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 11am to 3pm.

Cake at Town and Country Market Saturday
 to celebrate 65 year anniversary
Discover and sample delicious treats and eats from all over the PNW region + beyond. Stay a while, and  explore the market for surprise deals. Did we mention there will be cake?!

There will be tables / carts / vendors doing various sampling and some giveaways throughout the market!

Shoreline currently has commitments from Salt Blade Salami (meet the maker) and CB's nuts, as well as various cheese vendors and also some giveaways from different departments!

As one of few family-owned, independent grocery stores in the region, T/C is thrilled to celebrate being in business for more than six decades and excited for what’s to come during the next 65 years!

Founded in 1957 by Ed Loverich and brothers John and Mo Nakata, Town and Country Markets is one of few family-owned, independent grocery stores in the region. For 65 years, T/C has been searching the world–and its own neighborhoods— to bring customers new ways to experience the joys of food, and share it with the people they love.

Today, John’s granddaughter, Mo’s sons and other key leaders work together to guide the company, and members of both families work in various locations.

John and Mo's grandfather emigrated from Japan to Bainbridge in 1899 and worked at Port Blakely Mill. After opening a barbershop and laundry in Winslow, their grandfather bought a strawberry farm in 1924.

The brothers' parents were married on the farm, converted the barbershop into a meat market, and during World War II were forced to go with their sons to a Japanese-American internment camp.

After the war, they returned home to Bainbridge and partnered with Ed Loverich to open Town and Country Market, bringing the community together around food, people and love.

The Shoreline Town and Country (aka Central Market) is located at 15505 Westminster Way N, Shoreline, WA 98133 in Shoreline Place (aka Sears)

Retired Shoreline teachers explore micro-brewery owned by Shoreline natives in Puerto Vallarta

Sunday, October 9, 2022

By Arnie Moreno

In the Zona Romantica of Puerto Vallarta is a local micro-brewery that makes and markets Seattle style beers. Located on a cobblestone street in Old Town Puerto Vallarta, is Monzon Brewing Company.

In January of 2021, Rebecca and I, two retired Shoreline teachers, decided to take a break from Winter’s dark rainy days in the Pacific Northwest. We found a AirBnB rental home that was located in the Zone Romantica that was walking distance to the Zona shops, Malecon, restaurants, open air markets, taco stands and beaches.

We were surrounded by local Mexican neighbors and luxury condos. It was a dream come true to spend the whole month soaking up the sun, golf, tennis and Mexican art and culture.

We scheduled a walking tour of Old Town Zona Romantica with a local guide, which I highly recommend if you are new to PV.

At the end of our tour, our guide told us that here was a new brewery making Seattle style IPA’s in the Zona and asked us if we wanted go to the brewery, since he knew we were from the Seattle area.

Of course, we were very thirsty since it was 80 degrees that day in PV, so our small tour group went to Monzon Brewery. We found the brewery after a short two block walk, and went to the top patio for a beverage.

Reid and Miranda Mortimer

We found a table and before sitting down I heard “Mr. Moreno!“. To my surprise it was a former Shorewood student of mine, Reid Mortimer. As a retired teacher, I encounter former students frequently.

I never expected to meet one in Puerto Vallarta.

He told me that he was the owner and brewer for Monzon Brewery. Reid grew up in Shoreline and told me his story of meeting his wife, Miranda, also a Shoreline native, and their travels to Bombay, India, and working at a brewery, Mumbai’s first brewery, and learning the microbrew craft.

Needless to say, the beer was delicious and so fun seeing my old student Reid in Puerto Vallarta.

Rebecca and I are returning to Puerto Vallarta again this January and February and look forward to visiting Reid and Miranda at Monzon Brewery again!

If you are in Puerto Vallarta, be sure to visit the Zone Romantica and stop by to taste great IPA’s, Pilsners and say hi to Reid and Miranda Mortimer at Monzon Brewing

Shoreline Fire Department and State Farm teach kids to plan their escape

Tuesday, October 4, 2022

The Shoreline Fire Department is teaming up with State Farm and the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week™ campaign, “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.™.”

This year’s campaign, October 9 - 15, 2022 works to educate everyone about simple but important steps they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Local agent Jeff Kalvelage donated a fire safety kit to Shoreline Fire. The kit contains 500 items the fire station can use to teach kids the importance of safe evacuations during a home fire. The kit was donated in time for the station to have the items on hand to distribute in October, which is Fire Safety Month.

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape from the time the smoke alarm sounds.
'Your ability to get out depends on early warning from working smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of the Outreach and Advocacy division at NFPA.

Washington is number 5 in average claim cost. So far this year State Farm has paid almost $59 million in fire claims in Washington alone, with an average claim cost of $78,844. Deputy Fire Marshall Ryan Burgess and agent Kalvelage encourage all residents to actively support fire prevention by developing and practicing a home escape plan with all members of their household.

Here are some important Home Fire Escape Safety Tips:
  • Make sure your home escape plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Always check that all doors and windows open easily.
  • Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
  • Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household. Practice at least once during the day and at night.
For additional tips and information about Fire Prevention Week visit https://www.nfpa.org/fpw

25 Years of Aegis Living: Shoreline Team Celebrates with “Field of Dreams” Party

Sunday, October 2, 2022

Aegis staff members at the Field of Dreams party
at the Shoreline facility

For 25 years, Aegis Living has cared for area seniors, offering senior assisted living and memory care across the Puget Sound and beyond.

Fun at the staff party on a fortunately warm day
The local company, founded by Dwayne J. Clark, was created to redefine the senior living industry and set a new standard, fostering an employee-centric business model and ensuring residents live every day to the fullest.

Clark was a long-time industry executive before founding Aegis and felt even more inspired to drive lasting change when his own mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Aegis Living opened its first community in 1997, and its first office in Redmond, WA, with a small but mighty team of just two employees.

Aegis Living Shoreline opened in 2005, just 8 years later.

Playing baseball at the Field of Dreams staff party

The Shoreline team celebrated the company milestone and 25th anniversary with a baseball-themed party inspired by the movie “Field of Dreams.” The staff turned the community’s parking lot into a baseball field and served hot dogs and Cracker Jacks for a fun-filled afternoon with the team.

“From starting as a care manager to serving as a director of operations and now as an acting general manager at Aegis Living Shoreline, I could not feel more privileged to work for a company that gives me purpose every single day,” said Ashley Besmehn. “I am honored to work here, and I look forward to the next big milestone."

Aegis Living Shoreline staff celebrated with home runs, laughter, joy, full stomachs, and a true sense of community.

"When I first came to Aegis 14 years ago, I had just lost both my parents. Coming to Aegis was a blessing in that I gained a much bigger family,” said Char Linvog, lead concierge at Aegis Living Shoreline. “Over the past 14 years, I have felt a sense of purpose and belonging."

Celebrating 25 years
More than 200 team members have been with Aegis Living for more than 10 years, including seven employees at the Shoreline community:

Norberta Bada (16 years), Charlene Linvog (14 years), Janaira Stokes (12 years), Clarissa-Ann Fitting (11 years), Mila Garcia Silang (10 years), Facundo Aranda (10 years), and Lourdes Bazan (10 years).

Aegis has been voted a great workplace more than a dozen times – from the Top 50 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor to Great Place to Work® certification.

Equally important to its dedication to team and residents is Aegis Living Shoreline’s commitment to the community.

From delivering meals to local seniors, offering continuing education classes to community and healthcare workers, holding support groups for families, sponsoring the farmer’s market, concerts in the park, and other community events, and so much more, Aegis Living always strives to make a lasting impact and keep the Shoreline community at the heart or all it does.

Shoreline Aegis is located at 14900 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.

New mural adds color to North City Business District

New mural on the recently closed North City Cleaners

Rachel Wold Art is excited to announce a new, vibrant mural in the bustling North City business district of Shoreline.

Wold, a Seattle-based abstract artist, grew up in Shoreline and has many happy childhood memories of the stretch of 15th Ave NE that runs through North City.

The cleaners' space is for lease

The mural sprawls across the side of the building at 17721 15th Ave NE, which housed the North City Dry Cleaners for over forty years until owner Eric van der Giessen (the artist’s uncle) retired this summer.

Wold’s mother also worked at the cleaners for many years and often brought her children along during the summer or on days with no school.

They spent their days exploring the neighborhood, picking blackberries or trading cleaning chores for treats from the local shops.

The mural features an abstract Pacific Northwest scene of evergreens in bright, harmonious color with pops on contrast, and is a love letter from the artist to a neighborhood of her childhood.

Rachel Wold poses with her newest mural

Wold participates in a number of independent and fundraising art events in the Seattle area, and donates a portion of proceeds to Urban Artworks.
