Restaurant Review: Pizza at The Local 104

Sunday, September 18, 2022

Sue Stadler at The Local 104
Sue Stadler, LFP Elementary/Kellogg/Shorecrest graduate, enjoys a mushroom pizza at The Local 104 where she was having supper with her mother, Anne Stadler.

Anne talked with Chef Tony Vujovich, co-owner of The Local 104

Chef Tony is truly the KING of local food!! Awesome supper at Local 104!!

He uses a method for creating the dough that he invented. It makes an incredibly delicious thin crust.

He’s really super thoughtful about sourcing locally, paying careful attention to climate change issues and practices. The place is a pleasure to eat in! And he’s an impressive guy!

The Local 104 is on Ballinger Way and 35th Ave NE, 18498 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

End of an Era: Highland Ice Arena closes October 15, 2022

Highland Ice Arena in Shoreline

By Jamie Holter

If you are reading this in the Shoreline Area News, you have probably been to Shoreline’s Highland Ice Arena at least once or, more realistically, maybe 100 times in your lifetime.

The rink was built on a vacant lot on Aurora and named for the area. View looking north.
.
Whether it was skating lessons, fun with friends, school parties, birthday parties, or other family outings, the rink on Aurora has been a part of Shoreline entertainment and community long before Shoreline was a thought. In fact, the area was originally known as Richmond Highlands so that’s how the arena got its name.

Grand Opening 60 years ago

The Highland Ice Arena is closing its doors for good October 15, 2022, after serving the greater Puget Sound community for nearly 60 years to the day.

Terry Green, longtime Skating Director, and daughter of founding owners Dorothy and Jim Stephens, shared pictures and memories of this cherished landmark recently as she prepared to close up.

Postcard with photos from 1962

Her dad grew up in Vancouver, BC and learned to skate early at Vancouver’s Forum. He worked jobs on the ice and found an early passion for curling. He won the National Northwest Jr. Men’s champs twice in 1938 and 1939.

Like most men his age, he planned to join his father’s military regiment, the Canadian Army. But due to an unfortunately timed outbreak of mumps and hives, he was rejected. Frustrated, he pursued a short teaching career and later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, which proved to be an important decision only discovered later on.

Dorothy Stephens at the start of her career in the Ice Capades

At about the same time, more than half a country away, Dorothy was skating on the frozen ponds of Quebec with three brothers who forced her into service as ice hockey goalkeeper. She was tough and good. So good and so skilled, she tried out for the Ice Capades and secured a spot.

The spot took her on tour throughout the U.S. During a break on that tour, she was at her home ice arena where her future husband was hanging out between his tours. They met. It wasn’t instant. It took a little while to win her heart! They married on the winter solstice, December 21, 1944. Both finished their respective tours and got down to their shared passion – the ice and their trademark motto “Let skating preserve the fitness of youth”.

After teaching in Tacoma and Portland for several years, they had an opportunity to co-lease the Ballard Ice Arena at Shilshole and Dock for a few years. In 1962, they took the leap and opened their own - the Highland Ice Arena was born! [Fun fact: they had the first Zamboni in Washington State!

Jim and Dorothy Stephens at home on the ice

Mom and Dad Stephens taught for years. They worked at and volunteered for every aspect of the ice arena world. They ran their own business. They supported and coached Curling teams. They got the North Seattle Granite Curling Club off the ground. They influenced hundreds, if not thousands of skaters and athletes over the years.

Terry, their daughter and 40+ year Skating Director, says growing up in her family was the best life. The entire skating community is very close. They shared stories of falling asleep in the music room on New Year's Eve because they kept the ice arena open until 12:15am to ring in the new year with everyone.

She says that still today, she can go to any competition anywhere in the U.S. and meet someone who skated at the Highland Ice Arena. Back then, skating instructors brought their kids to work and now she sees those kids with their own kids, putting on their own make-up for their own competition. Generations and generations of happiness and preserving the fitness of youth.

The Stephens family 1955

But like many things, it’s time to close. Dorothy and Jim both passed within months of each other recently at ages 99 and 100 respectively and left quite a legacy.

Terry’s husband, Gary, her brother, Rick and his wife Diana Stephens are currently running the rink. The sale has been pending since January 2021. Rick and Diana will continue to run a skate shop and handle boot fittings, sharpening and repairs at a location yet to be determined.

Valkyria Mansfield, 4th generation family skater and the youngest of the great grandkids

Surviving family members say it’s tough to run a business, let alone get up and down into the Zamboni these days. So they decided to sell.

The deal closes October 6, 2022 and Terry invited the community to one last skating exhibition on October 15, 2022

Many, many thanks to the family for sharing their passion and this jewel with our community for so long.

12,000 child care providers in King County to receive one-time payments totaling $7 million

Wednesday, August 17, 2022

Photo by Tanaphong Toochinda on Unsplash
Following an announcement of $7 million in funding in June from King County and the City of Seattle, more than 12,000 child care providers are expected to receive one-time payments for retention bonuses.

King County is contributing $5 million through the Best Starts for Kids levy and the City of Seattle is contributing $2.4 million from the JumpStart Payroll Expense Tax.

Nearly 90 percent of eligible licensed child care providers in the county applied for the retention payments, reflecting a deep need in the workforce. Due to the number of applications, the one-time payment will range from $400 – $500 per child care worker and begin to reach providers this month through September.

"Child care workers are essential to a healthy, thriving region, providing critical services to families and communities every day," said King County Executive Dow Constantine.
"We are committed to access to affordable child care and respectful wages for child care workers, and these investments provide the necessary support to ensure both. We're grateful for our partnership with Mayor Harrell and the City of Seattle and will continue to collaborate on ways we can invest in this workforce."

Ridwell picks up hard to recycle items from subscribers

Wednesday, August 3, 2022

Ridwell makes it easy to sustainably reuse and recycle your stuff. They pick up hard-to-recycle items like plastic film, clothing, batteries, light bulbs, and a seasonal featured category right from your front door and get them to a partner that can reuse or recycle them.

With Ridwell, wasting less and reducing clutter around your home is simple and seamless.

Ridwell got started in Seattle as a father-son project when Ridwell founder Ryan's son Owen asked him what they could do with all the batteries they had piling up around their house.

On nights and weekends, they offered pickups to their neighbors in Queen Anne to help them waste less.

This project grew as more and more neighbors wanted to be a part of this new, collaborative way to reduce waste. Eventually this movement turned into Ridwell, a large community of people sharing new ideas and making a difference one pickup at a time.

Ridwell is a subscription service. They pick up a few core categories every pickup including plastic film, clothing, batteries, and light bulbs.

Members can also arrange for pickups of additional hard-to-recycle items like paint and styrofoam as an add-on to the service.

To help members waste less and positively impact their communities, Ridwell features rotating featured categories seasonally for things like non-perishable food, eyeglasses, bicycles, and more.

Over 97% of the material Ridwell picks up from members gets reused or recycled. To date, Ridwell members have saved over 5 million pounds of materials from landfills.

Neighborhood Climb Night at Uplift Climbing - and Climbing Demystified

Friday, July 22, 2022

We've got a neighborhood climbing night at Uplift on Monday, July 25, 2022 and would love to have y'all join us!

We're hoping to demystify the climbing gym a bit, and welcome folks in who may have been wondering for a while what our deal is

Shoreline resident Pam Stucky is an avid fan of climbing and would love to have you join her in the sport.

Are you interested in learning more about bouldering / rock climbing now that Shoreline has our very own climbing gym? Are you a climber who hasn't been climbing lately? Do you want to find a way to add some fun exercise to your life? Do you want to expand your community?

Whether you're new to climbing or an old pro, join us Monday, July 25, 2022 at Uplift Climbing!

Neighborhood Climb Night runs from 5 to 9pm, and for anyone more middle-aged interested in finding other middle-aged people to get on the wall with (whether you've done it before or not), join us at 6:30pm for the inaugural session of Midlife Rocks!

While the goal of Midlife Rocks is to get more middle-aged people climbing, people of all ages and abilities are welcome. Uplift will be offering half-price day passes from 5 to 9pm, and you can rent climbing shoes on site as well. Just bring yourself, comfortable clothes, and a desire to have and contribute to a great time for all!

Q/A:

Q. Do I have to be in great shape to climb?
A. Not to get started you don't! Sure, the better shape you're in the easier climbing will be. But to get started, you can come exactly as you are! That's one of the great things about climbing: it meets you where you are, and you improve at your own pace.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Wear comfortable clothes. (The gym is air-conditioned, so it's a great place to be on a hot night!) You can rent climbing shoes from Uplift. (Some people wear socks with their climbing shoes; many do not. You do you.)

Q: Climbing is potentially dangerous. Do I have to sign a waiver?
A: Yes. You will have to sign a waiver. Save time and do it in advance here: https://uplift.portal.approach.app

Q: Can I just come and watch?
A: Sure, but wear comfortable clothes anyway in case you decide to jump in! Also, to be in the gym around the climbing walls you need to sign a waiver even if you're not going to climb. https://uplift.portal.approach.app

Q: You said your new group is "Midlife Rocks." I'm not middle-aged. Can I be part of the community anyway?
A: Heck yes!

Q: I don't know how to climb.
A: No worries. You can come and learn the basics. This gathering is intended to be non-judgmental and supportive.

Q: Are you sure this is a good activity for middle-aged people?
A: Again I say: Heck yes! Climbing builds strength, balance, and flexibility, all of which are critical as we age. Plus, the climbing community is second to none, which is also critical, at every age.

Q: What's the address?

Q: When is this again?
A: The Neighborhood Climb Night is Monday, July 25, from 5 to 9pm; all y'all middle-aged people are invited to join me at 6:30pm! See you there!

"The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It is connection." – Johann Hari

"Rock climbing may be the ultimate full-body workout. When it comes to training a diverse range of muscles, few exercises or workouts rival rock climbing and bouldering." Time magazine

"A bouldering gym built to serve rock climbers. No matter how hard we climb, we always try hard." Uplift Climbing, Shoreline

Trader Joe's salad dressing with ready-to-eat chicken Caesar salad contains undisclosed eggs

Saturday, July 16, 2022

WASHINGTON, July 12, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that the salad dressing component of ready-to-eat (RTE) Caesar salad with chicken may contain egg, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product label.

FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to eggs are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

The product is no longer sold in the stores but the concern is that customers with egg allergies may have previously purchased the item.

The Caesar salads with chicken were produced on July 5, 2022. The following products are subject to the public health alert: 9 oz. plastic clamshell containers of “TRADER JOE’S CAESAR SALAD WITH WHITE CHICKEN MEAT and Creamy Caesar Dressing” with best by dates of 07/11/22 and 07/12/22, and a lot code of GHNW 186-06.

The products bear establishment number “P-46987” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to Trader Joe’s locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Almost on Shark Tank - local sports chiropractor pitches his ergonomic pillow

Monday, July 11, 2022

Shoreline chiropractor on shipping day for his
MUUS pillows
By Diane Hettrick

In December 2020 we published an article about a local sports chiropractor, Dr. Patrick Silva, who was running a kickstarter to fund the production of his foldable, ergonomic pillow, the Muus.

He finished a successful Kickstarter in January, raising $11,000 which helped him start up an online shop and start marketing and selling his ergonomic pillows.

We've already fulfilled nearly 200 orders!

He was inspired by watching Shark Tank - a TV reality show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to wealthy venture capitalists, hoping for funding.

So naturally, his next step was to apply to appear on the show.

The MUUS foldable pillow
His story:

I answered a casting call through ABC's Shark Tank site. https://sharktankcastingseason14.castingcrane.com/

After about a month we heard from an associate producer who reached out to chat more about our company and our idea.

We had a fun phone interview, mostly seemed as if he was feeling me out - did I seem professional, or know my numbers or business well.

At the end of our call, he said, "Well, Dr. Patrick, I want to put you through to the next round."

We then got sent 3 separate emails; one background check, one business application, and one video application. These took HOURS to fill out, nearly an entire weekend for me. And the video application just revolved around showcasing your personality, your product, and answering 10 questions.

But we had them all submitted a week later and were told we would hear from them by the end of the month (this was April 2022).

I had a ball filming the video portion - I do a little video editing and graphic design in my spare time, but I can imagine how rough it might be for a business that doesn't have those skills on hand.

So if you're thinking about applying, make sure you have some good people who can film and edit for you!

At the end of the month we heard back that they had decided on some other lucky folks, and life continued as usual.

Currently, we're looking to partner with big companies like COOP, PURPLE, or TEMPUR PEDIC to license our design to them and have them manufacture their own versions!

We're also working with local companies, wholesaling so that Healthcare offices like Chiros and PTs can have some on-hand in their offices!

To date, we've sold around 18k worth of our lovely innovative pillows and this is only the beginning!

Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints are a popular Northwest band who perform extensively on the West Coasts of the US and Canada with recurring gigs in New York City, New Orleans and Los Angeles as well. In 2016 their first album, Dream Man, won Earshot Jazz Society’s “Northwest Jazz Recording of the Year” and in 2017 and 2018 Birch was nominated as “Vocalist of the Year”.

BECU accepting nominations for their 2022 People Helping People Awards!

Monday, June 13, 2022

BECU, Washington’s largest credit union, is currently accepting nominations for their 2022 People Helping People Awards!

This annual, member-driven program recognizes both BECU members and local nonprofits that are dedicated to serving their communities, from ending hunger and pushing for social equity and justice, to transforming lives through education, mentorship and more.

Interested nonprofits are encouraged to share this opportunity with their network so that a BECU member may nominate them for this awards program.

Other facts include:
  • Each winner will receive up to $50,000 in grant funds and a glide path grant of $2,500 for the two years following their initial award.
  • Through our Black Community Development Project (BCDP), a five-year, $5 million commitment to Black communities and racial equity, we’re giving up to $150,000 in additional funding to support small, Black-led nonprofits nominated by BECU members. (Glide path funding does not apply to BCDP grant recipients)
  • Since the program launched in 2013, BECU has donated more than $3 million to over 120 local nonprofits. A list of our 2021 award recipients can be found here.
For nonprofits interested in learning more about the nomination process, key submission dates and award amounts, please visit www.becu.org/members-matter/community-involvement/people-helping-people
