Coming up soon: 4-Corners BrewFest

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

4-Corners BrewFest, Saturday, Aug 13,
3:00pm - 7:00pm, Innis Arden Clubhouse,
1430 NW 188th St, Seattle, WA 98177

2016 will mark the 6th year of the 4-Corners BrewFest. We have grown (but just enough), and have become the beer-lovers' event of the summer.

Haven't been yet?? Where have you been?

A BrewFest ticket is not just your opportunity to experience new beers or to revel in your favorites.

Your ticket includes 10 5-oz tastes of whatever strikes your fancy, enough food to qualify as dinner, live music, and the chance to rub elbows with Shoreline's finest residents. Your ticket also benefits a charity; this year's cause is homelessness, and Hopelink is our charity of choice. Proceeds from the 2016 BrewFest will be split between the 4 participating neighborhoods and Hopelink.

So... what do you bring?
  • Your ID. Yep, EVERYONE gets carded, even if you have grey hair and are married to our mom.
  • Your wallet. Just kidding, you can leave that at home (except for that ID). The ticket is all-inclusive, so you won't need a fat wallet.
  • Your friends. Your neighbors. Your out-of-town guests. Your favorite beer-lover.
What do you leave at home?
  • Your wallet (see above). You cannot purchase extra tastes (an insurance thing), so cash will just take up room in your pocket.
  • Your kids. This is a 21+ event, so even babes-in-arms cannot attend. Even if they love good craft brews.
  • Your dogs. It gets pretty crowded out there, and often a little hot too, so please leave the happy pups at home.
  • Your favorite stein. Yeah, we have tasting glasses. You won't get served in a 60-oz mug.
  • Sound good? Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door. We offer a limited number of designated driver tickets online, and tickets are on sale both online and at Beach House Greetings.
Want to volunteer? Many hands make light work! Click this link to see our Sign Up on SignUp.com: Find the BrewFest page here, and check back often as our list of brewers grows!

We hope to see you on Saturday, August 13!!

4-Corners BrewFest - just around the corner

Friday, August 2, 2013

2013 BrewFest
By Lisa Surowiec and friends
The 3rd Annual 4-Corners BrewFest is just around the corner on August 10 from 3-7 pm on the patio and field behind behind the Innis Arden Community House at 1430 NW 188th St in Shoreline.

We sat down with Richmond Beach's Steve Kerr, the brains behind BrewFest, for a little Q /A.

Where is 4-Corners?
The 'famous' Four Corners Monument marks the quadripoint in the Southwestern United States where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet. As it is entirely implausible we would be promoting an event thousands of miles away, our own '4-Corners' was coined in 2010 and is located at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and NW 8th in Shoreline, WA.

What’s so special about your ‘4-Corners’?
Our version represents the quadripoint of the Innis Arden, Richmond Beach, Richmond Highlands, and Hillwood neighborhoods and serves as the inspiration for 4-Corners.Org. 4-Corners.Org is a 501(c)(3) charity created by volunteers from each of those neighborhoods to collaborate and cooperate on various civic endeavors. These four neighborhood associations serve Shoreline residents from approximately 165 county line and everything west of Aurora Avenue N.

How long have you been doing 4-Corners BrewFest?
"3rd Annual" generally refers to the 3rd year of something. This is no exception.

Is it true that all proceeds from 4-Corners BrewFest get donated back to the community?
Yes. All net proceeds are divided equally among four Shoreline neighborhood associations  (Hillwood Community Network, Richmond Highlands Neighborhood Associations, Richmond Beach Community Association, Innis Arden Activities Committee) and a featured charity. For 2013, our featured charity is The WORKS, a member of the Shoreline Back-to-School consortium that provides clothes, school supplies and toiletries to underprivileged youth.

Hey, I’ve heard of them.  They do great work, don’t they?
We think so.

So who makes up 4-Corners.Org?
All persons involved with 4-Corners.Org are volunteers from each of the four neighborhoods.

Will there be any celebrities in attendance at 4-Corners BrewFest?
Depends on your definition of celebrity. If your standards are low enough, there just might be someone who looks vaguely like someone who knows someone who might be famous.

What brewers will be there?
In 2013 the lineup is outstanding and includes North Sound Brewing (Mt. Vernon), Lazy Boy Brewing (Everett), Diamond Knot Craft Brewing (Mukilteo), Big E Ales (Lynnwood), American Brewing (Edmonds), Gallagher's Where-U-Brew (Edmonds), 192 Brewing (Kenmore), Brickyard Brewing (Woodinville), Tripelhorn Brewing (Woodinville), Naked City Brewery (Seattle), Odin Brewing (Seattle), NW Peaks Brewing (Seattle), Fremont Brewing (Seattle), Reuben's Brews (Seattle), Emerald City Beer Company (Seattle), Elysian Brewing (Seattle), Bellevue Brewing Company (Bellevue), Silver City Brewing (Silverdale), 7 Seas Brewing (Gig Harbor) and Oskar Blues Brewing (Longmont, CO).

What about Oregon beers?
Nope. We're all about local craft beer. But Colorado’s Oskar Blues wanted in too and we didn’t think anyone would raise a ruckus.

Wait a minute. Isn't Richmond Highlands that exclusive neighborhood next to the Seattle Golf Club filled with zillionaires and captains of industry?
I think you're confusing Richmond Highlands with 'The Highlands'. Richmond Highlands is the quiet neighborhood from approximately 165th to 185th and Aurora Avenue to NW 8th. It includes Shorewood High School, St. Luke's, the Ronald Wastewater District offices, and many, many wonderful people.

But I don't like beer.
Technically that's not a question. Perhaps you've only drank bad beer in the past. I can personally guarantee that each of these brewers puts out some tasty beer, whatever your palate.

How do I go about getting tickets?
Tickets are available online (credit card) or in person at Beach House Greetings (626 Richmond Beach Road), Special Brews (14608 Hwy 99 in Lynnwood), The Beer Authority (2716 Lake City Way NE in Lake City), or Chuck’s Hop Shop (656 NW 85th St in Greenwood) for $30 (cash or check only).  If there are any unsold tickets on the day of the event, they will be available at the door for $40.

Wait, how much are tickets again?
$30 in advance, $40 at the door (if available).

So you're saying there's a limited number of tickets and there’s no guarantee they’ll be available at the door?
That's exactly what I'm saying.

Does that mean I should jump on it now?
Probably a wise idea.

Is my ticket tax deductible?
Nice try. However, if you want to make an additional donation to either 4-Corners.Org or The WORKS, such donations would be tax deductible.

When is it?
Saturday, August 10

Wow, that’s coming up, isn’t it?
Yes it is.

Can I bring my kids?
Sorry, 21 and over only.

What about my dog?
Let me rephrase that … humans 21 and over only.

Can I help?
Sure. We are using Volunteer Spot to organize volunteers. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot, Volunteers are rewarded with gratitude and a free ticket.

Sounds like great exposure. Can my business get in on this?
We welcome local businesses to get involved, but we need to know as soon as possible to get your name in the program. We'd love to have more door prizes (business swag or gift cards), finger food from local restaurants, or financial help. Contributions would be tax deductible.

If we do that, what kind of exposure can we expect?
You can put up a banner at the event and put information out on a sponsor table. We will thank you on as much social media as we can, in wrap up articles (citywide and neighborhood newsletters), in the program, and on the website.

Is 4-Corners BrewFest held at the actual 4-Corners intersection of Richmond Beach Road and NW 8th?
No. We figured the nice patio and grassy field behind the Innis Arden Clubhouse was more comfortable than an asphalt parking lot. But with parking at a premium, we certainly encourage you to park at the 4-Corners intersection and make the pleasant stroll down the hill to the event.

I think walking is overrated.  Will there be a shuttle van?
Yes. Our friends at Puget Sound Brewery Tours will be offering shuttle service to and from the offsite parking at the actual 4-Corners intersection.

What does my $30 ticket get me?
For openers, your ticket gets you ten 5 oz tastes from some of the area's best local craft brewers.  You'll also get a souvenir chalice (o.k., it's a mini plastic pilsner glass), a fancy-schmancy bracelet (a tyvek wristband), free brats from the grill, snacks, popcorn, pretzel necklaces, and good ol' bluegrass music. Most importantly, you get the warm fuzzies that go with supporting great organizations like The WORKS.

O.K., that seems reasonable.
We think so too.

I don’t drink alcohol.  Are there designated driver tickets?
Yes. A limited number of designated driver tickets are available online for $15. It includes food and soft drinks, including draft rootbeer brewed by some of the breweries that are attending.

Will there be any cideries or wineries represented? Not this year. We tried to line some up but were unsuccessful. However, we hope to add them to the mix in future events.

I don't think I can drink all ten.
Once again, not really a question. That being said, we certainly want everyone to be responsible so don't try to out kick your coverage. If you're worried it’s too much beer for you, tell your pourer to go easy and enjoy just a sip or two.

If there's 20 brewers and 40+ different beers but only 10 drink tokens, can I buy additional tokens?
Unfortunately we do not offer additional tokens for sale at the event. I suggest you bring some friends and share amongst yourselves. Just make sure you get the first sip so you don't get any of the backwash.

Now that's just gross.

Stillwater Hill
Will there be any music?
Darn tootin' there will be. The bluegrass band Stillwater Hill will be picking and jamming throughout the event.

Golden Growler
What is the 'Golden Growler'?
Only the most prestigious glass jug that's ever been super-glued to a scrap piece of 2x6, spray painted gold, and affixed with a karate trophy bought at a garage sale. The 'Golden Growler' is awarded to the crowd favorite as voted on by those who remember to turn in their ballots. Last year Gallagher’s Where-U-Brew took the top honors with their Maui Wowie Mango IPA. For the past 12 months, they’ve had the honor of displaying the 'Golden Growler' in their tap room with their name etched on the award with a black Sharpie pen for posterity. The year before, Big E Ales took the big prize with their Orange Creamsicle.

So who is going to walk away with the 'Golden Growler' this year?
That depends on you. I guess you'll just have to buy a ticket and find out.

Opportunity for local businesses to advertise at Brew Fest

Friday, July 19, 2013

From the 4-Corner Brew Fest Committee

Shoreline’s 4-Corner Brew Fest is a great way to support and advertise local community businesses.

In these challenging economic times it feels good to know, support and purchase items and services from individuals in your community who are practicing entrepreneurship.

Do you have a local business?

The 4-Corner Brew Fest is a great opportunity for Shoreline’s small businesses to shine out and let your neighbors know what you are selling and creating. It is a fun atmosphere to share what you do and how you manage your business. Nikki Mize of Whidbey Island Bank, and a supporter of the BrewFest every year, shared that " Brew Fest is a better way to meet the community and is more fun than a networking meeting."

As an advertising business at the Brew Fest you can have your own banner hanging in the courtyard and an opportunity to table information about your wares. We will post your information on our website, on Facebook, on Twitter, and in the Brew Fest Program. You can talk to the happy “Brew Festers” and know that you are also supporting your community, four neighborhood associations and the PTA Council  “The WORKS” program.

We can offer the following ways for our local businesses to have advertising privileges:
  • Contribute financially to Brew Fest
  • Contribute gift cards or other swag for door prizes
  • Have your employees volunteer for a shift (they can wear your business shirts!)
Brew Fest is a beautiful ‘win-win’ opportunity for all of us in Shoreline!

Are you a consumer?

As consumers, your purchasing items and services within your own locality, supports your neighbors and and community by circulating money back into your own neighborhood community. Purchasing items or services from your local businesses also supports familiar values, rather than purchasing items or services from some offshore or unknown locality with unknown principles.

It is also a great way to meet and make stronger bonds with your neighbors and friends.

Please contact Lisa Surowiec or Steve Kerr if you would like to join in and advertise your local business in this fun and worthy event. Shoreline is a great place to live and we want to be known for our support of local entrepreneurs.

See you Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the 4-Corners Brew Fest!

BrewFest is a volunteer organization from four neighborhood associations in Shoreline - Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, Innis Arden, and Richmond Beach.

2nd Annual 4-Corners BrewFest another huge success

Sunday, September 23, 2012

By Lisa Surowiec

For the second straight year, the 4-Corners BrewFest was nothing short of amazing.  This year's theme - Bluegrass and Brews - and the complimentary pretzel necklaces also contributed to the success.

Quite simply, the weather was perfect, the music was lively, the crowd was festive, and the beer was tasty.

Most importantly, 4-Corners BrewFest raised nearly $10,000 for New Beginnings - a battered women's shelter - and the four neighborhood associations that comprise 4-Corners.Org: the Richmond Beach Community Association, the Hillwood Community Network, the Richmond Highlands Neighborhood Association, and the Innis Arden Activities Committee.  Additionally, it provided a great excuse to get together, meet your neighbors, and have a good time on a Saturday afternoon.

All told, nineteen brewers - from Everett to Escondido - served the thirst throng on the Innis Arden Clubhouse's back patio some of the best craft beer on the planet.

Returning brewers from 2011 included American Brewing and Gallagher's Where-U-Brew (Edmonds), Big E Ales (Lynnwood), Naked City Brewing, Fremont Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, Lantern Brewing, and Georgetown Brewing (Seattle), Diamond Knot Craft Brewing (Mukilteo) and Silver City Brewing (Silverdale).  This year also featured a number of new faces, including Lazy Boy Brewing (Everett), Brickyard Brewing and Twelve Bar Brews (Woodinville), 192 Brewing (Kenmore), Elliott Bay Brewing, Hilliard's Beer, and Pike Brewing (Seattle), 7 Seas Brewing (Gig Harbor).

And as luck would have it, a late cancellation allowed an appearance from Stone Brewing (Escondido, CA) which has twice been named 'The Alltime Top Brewery on Planet Earth' by Beer Advocate magazine.

Food was provided by Richmond Beach's own Full Moon Thai Cuisine, Flying Dragon, and Gino's Pizza and Pasta and supplemented by grilled bratwurst and sausages from RBCA former president and resident grill master Ed Adams. And a collection of bluegrass players from in and around Shoreline kept everybody's toes tapping in between tastings.

2012 also featured some of the closest competitions when it came time to hand out the hardware.  Gig Harbor's 7 Seas Brewing took home the trophy for the fastest blown keg with its Balz Deep Double IPA. The brewers that poured the most beer included American Brewing, Fremont Brewing, and Big E Ales. And in the 'People's Choice' competition the Golden Growler was awarded to Gallagher's Orange Mango IPA, which narrowly edged last year's winner Big E Ales' Blackberry Ale and Fremont Brewing's Dark Star Imperial Stout.  Other crowd favorites included offerings from Lantern Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, Hilliard's Beer, and Georgetown Brewing.

In the end, however, one of the best things about 4-Corners BrewFest was that it is a true collaboration between all four neighborhoods. The 2012 BrewFest Committee included Chip Erickson and Lisa Surowiec (Richmond Highlands), Pete Bouchard and Afia Menke (Hillwood), Bill Montero (Innis Arden), and Steve Kerr (Richmond Beach). All of them put in countless hours to pull it off. Each neighborhood also contributed volunteers on the day of the event. Lastly, 4-Corners BrewFest also received generous support from local business Whidbey Island Bank, CleanScapes, and Beach House Greetings.

Of course it's never too early to start thinking about next year. A 3rd Annual 4-Corners BrewFest is already in the works for 2013 on Saturday, August 10th. If you'd like to be part of the 2013 committee, feel free to contact Steve Kerr. We're always looking for fun people who don't mind rolling up their sleeves (and enjoying a cold one after a job well done).

BrewFest welcomes new breweries Saturday

Monday, August 6, 2012

New breweries will be represented at the 4-Corners BrewFest this Saturday, August 11, 2012, joining the couple dozen who are happily returning from last year's event. The new ones include 7 Seas, Schooner Exact, and Reuben's Brews. (See previous article on BrewFest).

7 Seas Brewing from Gig Harbor

Formed in 2008 by Travis Guterson and Mike Runion, 7 Seas Brewing is an innovative craft brewery, making audacious, yet technically well-executed beers; utilizing cans rather than bottles; and championing environmental stewardship.

Having survived a fire at their original location which delayed their opening by six months, they now occupy a 3,000 square foot brewing facility superbly located in Gig Harbor, Washington.

Schooner Exact Brewing Company

In 2006, homebrewing pals Marcus Connery and Matt and Heather McClung decided to take their hobby to the next level and go pro. Purchasing a half-barrel system, they began brewing a keg of beer at a time out of an ActivSpace unit under the West Seattle Bridge. Beginning in January 2007, they distributed their beer to restaurants and taprooms all over the city of Seattle.

As demand for their beers increased, the Schooner EXACT founders expanded into a larger, 10 -barrel system. The brewery moved to the South Park neighborhood in early 2009, and to its current SODO location on 1st Avenue in 2010. After Marcus Connery passed the reins of the brewery over to Heather and Matt to pursue the next chapter in his beer adventures by opening a beer broker/ consulting business, Matt and Heather quit their teaching jobs to pursue their brewery dreams full time.

Reuben's Brews
We are a small, family owned and operated brewery located in Ballard in Seattle, WA.  We are opening on Sunday August 5th, 2012!  We will have a cozy taproom where you can meet with friends, sample and learn about our beers, and pick up a growler to enjoy elsewhere!  As a small, craft brewery operating on an artisan scale, we can’t guarantee broad distribution of our truly seasonal brews.  We hope you make the trip often to imbibe our frequently changing brews and become a part of the Reuben’s Brews Family.

About BrewFest
The second annual 4-Corners BrewFest will be held on Saturday, August 11th from 3-7pm on the patio and grass behind the Innis Arden Clubhouse at 1430 NW 188th St.

The second annual 4-Corners BrewFest will be held on Saturday, August 11th from 3-7pm on the patio and grass behind the Innis Arden Clubhouse at 1430 NW 188th St.

Once again, the lineup of brewers at 4-Corners BrewFest looks to be outstanding. Last year, Big E Ales took home the coveted Golden Growler with its Orange Creamsicle Ale. In 2012, the defending champs will be back as well as crowd favorites American Brewing, Diamond Knot Craft Brewing, Silver City Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, Lantern Brewing, Naked City Brewing, Fremont BrewingGeorgetown Brewing, Gallagher’s Where-U-Brew, and Two Beers Brewing.

All told, twenty local craft brewers will be featuring over 40 delicious ales, lagers, porters, and stouts.

4-Corners BrewFest is a fundraiser for the Shoreline neighborhood associations of Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, Richmond Beach, and Innis Arden, with all proceeds going back into the community. This year, an equal percentage of the proceeds will also be donated to New Beginnings, a shelter for those affected by domestic violence.

Tickets are currently on sale for $30 at Brown Paper Tickets or in person at Beach House Greetings at 626 Richmond Beach Road. Your ticket gets you: ten 5oz tastes from 40+ beers, a souvenir glass, free food from local Shoreline restaurants, grilled brats, and more. A limited number of designated driver tickets (food and soft drinks only) are also available online for $15.

This year’s music will be provided by the Shoreline Bluegrass All-Stars, a loose collection of accomplished local pickers and jammers.

Space is limited so it is a good idea, and cheaper, to get your tickets early. Tickets at the door, if available, will be $40.

4-Corners.Org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered with the Washington State Charities Program.

The organization is 100% volunteer-run and takes its name from the common intersection of the four neighborhoods at NW 8th and Richmond Beach Road. The foundation of a strong community starts with four corners.
