Cinderella's Crimes - Lake Forest Park native publishes new book

Friday, November 17, 2023

Cinna would quite literally kill for the throne….

For years, Cinna has been forced to serve her wealthy cousins rather than attend society events alongside them. She has waited for the chance to prove herself and exact revenge. When a ball at the castle is announced, promising to bring many powerful people to town, she seizes the opportunity to strike.

She bets her best friend, Johann, a small-time thief and con man, that she can land a greater score the night of the ball than he can. They embark on parallel heists. But as their plots unfold, things begin to unravel. By the end of the night, the castle’s on lockdown, a duchess is dead, a mansion has burned to the ground — and Cinna hasn’t even stolen anything.

Or has she captured something far more valuable than gold and jewels?

Cinderella's Crimes by Kelsey Josund is available on Amazon, or you can contact Kelsey directly for signed copies.

Kelsey Josund
Lake Forest Park native Kelsey Josund is a software engineer and author of scifi, fantasy and young adult fiction, including a series of forthcoming feminist retellings of classic childhood fairytales.

With a passion for storytelling in all its forms, Kelsey approaches writing fiction the same way she approaches writing code: she likes to know where it’s going, but wants to figure out the details as she goes.

She believes good software is a lot like a good story— full of neat and clever solutions to tricky problems, beautiful at a granular level but also from a distance.

Kelsey lives and works in Silicon Valley, California with her partner and their cat. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University, and is currently plotting her return to the Pacific Northwest and working on her next novel.

Shoreline photographer publishes book of rock concert photos from the past 50 years

Saturday, August 12, 2023

The First Three Songs by local photographer Steve Schneider
can be purchased here

Shoreline resident and Shoreline Area News contributor Steve Schneider has just published a book of concert photos from the most famous rock groups in America.

In a feature article in The Seattle Times, reporter Clay Eels says,

Steve Schneider, whose musically panoramic imagery fills “The First Three Songs: Rock and Roll at 125th of a Second,” a 220-page coffee-table compendium whose title alludes to the brief time at the opening of shows when promoters typically let photojournalists work up close. The tome bolsters Schneider’s uncomplicated mantra: “It’s always been about excitement, about fun. I just want to get the shot.”
He's seen them all, particularly the Grateful Dead.

His “Who’s Who” concert subjects range from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Pearl Jam, Dylan to Cobain, Bonnie Raitt to Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson to Paul Simon, to McCartney, Clapton, Jagger, Springsteen, Bowie and — yes — the Who.

A free book a month for every Washington child from birth to age five from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

Monday, August 7, 2023

On August 15, 2023 legendary icon, musician, and philanthropist Dolly Parton will visit Washington State to celebrate achieving statewide coverage of the Imagination Library.

All Washington children from birth to age five can now register to receive one book every month, for free, from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

August 15 will also be signified by a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee and Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck as “Imagination Library of Washington Day.”

Governor Inslee expressed, “We welcome the great Dolly Parton to celebrate our statewide program and promote registration for our youngest learners into the Imagination Library.
"It is important to get high quality books to children from a young age and ensure that their families, and their unique races, ethnicities and identities are well-represented among the selection of books.”

Hosted by the Imagination Library of Washington, the celebratory event will feature a fireside chat with Dolly Parton, a small performance, and recognition of champions from across the state who are making Dolly’s dream possible for Washington’s earliest learners.

This invite-only event will be broadcasted and streamed live on TVW (www.tvw.org) and available to view on both Imagination Library of Washington and TVW social media channels beginning at 2:30pm on Tuesday, August 15, and all are invited to tune in.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Washington was established in June 2022 by legislative direction, sponsored through a partnership with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), and administered by United Ways of the Pacific Northwest.

The program provides a high quality, age-appropriate book each month in the mail to enrolled children from birth to age five – at no cost to families in all 39 Washington counties.

Currently, more than 65,000 children in Washington are enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and in total, more than 1.6 million books have been gifted to children across the state. Prior to state commitment, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was only available in a handful of Washington regions.

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts more than 2.4 million free books each month to children around the world. In March of 2023, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reached a monumental global milestone: gifting more than 200 million books to children worldwide.

Families with children under five can sign up for the Imagination at ImaginationLibraryWashington.org

Crowd gathers for dedication ceremony of Octavia Butler Avenue in Lake Forest Park

Monday, July 31, 2023

The crowd gathering for the ceremony to name an LFP street for Octavia E. Butler
By Diane Hettrick

In a ceremony marked by brief speeches by LFP city councilmembers, a Seattle writer, and former neighbors, the City of Lake Forest Park named the street where she lived, 37th Ave NE in Lake Forest Park, in honor of author Octavia E. Butler.

The street was blocked for the event

Author Butler wrote speculative fiction which won the most prestigious awards in science fiction. Since her early death in 2006 at her home in Lake Forest Park, her work has continued to grow in popularity as so many of her ideas have come to pass - and people are worried about the rest.

A BBC article "Why Octavia E. Butler's novels are so relevant today" points out that what she eerily envisaged as an alternate future foresaw many aspects of life today.

The ceremony, on Saturday, July 29, 2023, was opened by Council Vice-Chair Phillippa Kassover. Remarks by Deputy Mayor Tom French and councilmember Tracy Furutani followed.

Councilmembers then unveiled the street sign and attendees lingered to talk in the warm evening.

Butler's most popular books are the Parable set.
Butler's Parable books have been made into an opera, which was performed at Lincoln Center this year. In the NPR article, Octavia Butler wrote a 'Parable' that became a prophecy—now it's also an opera, the author quotes Butler.
As Octavia Butler told WHYY's Fresh Air in 1993, her Parable novels were about the use and abuse of power in a broken society.
"They have no power to improve their lives, but they have the power to make others even more miserable," Butler said. "And the only way to prove to yourself that you have power is to use it."

King County Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program begins June 1

Sunday, May 28, 2023

The King County Library System (KCLS) invites King County residents of all ages to participate in its annual Summer Reading Program.

Participants are encouraged to track minutes spent reading from June 1 to August 31. Visit kcls.org/summer for more information, including reading recommendations and a list of events. The website will launch on June 1 when the program begins.

Program participants are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes per day, but they may set their own reading goals. They may read anything they choose to, and reading to someone else or listening to an audiobook counts toward reading minutes as well.

Starting June 1, patrons may pick up a reading log at a KCLS library to track their progress, or they may use the Beanstack app to log reading time online.

Participants may earn prizes for reaching their reading goals. Each time a patron meets their daily goal, they mark a shape on their reading or activity log.
  • When participants mark 25 shapes, they may receive a Halfway Prize;
  • When they mark 50 shapes, they may receive a Finisher Prize.
  • Prizes may be picked up beginning July 1 and are available while supplies last. Prizes are made possible by the King County Library System Foundation, and each category includes the following:
    • Halfway Prize - A KCLS Reader patch, with artwork from local artist Jenna Riggs.
    • The patron’s name posted on the Community Board at their library.
    • Finisher Prize - A journal that celebrates being a KCLS Reader, with artwork from local artist Jenna Riggs.
    • A sticker next to the patron’s name on the Community Board at their library.
Patrons may also participate in fun and educational activities all summer long, such as arts and crafts workshops, music and magic programs, outdoor StoryWalks, STEM learning opportunities and a variety of literary events.

“We are excited to kick off another summer of reading,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “And with KCLS’ recently expanded hours of operation, our community of readers can enjoy even more time at their library to browse for books, read with friends and participate in events.”

Reading is important for all ages. Research shows that children and teens grow their reading skills when they choose their own books and read for enjoyment.

It is especially important to keep children’s minds active and engaged during the summer to prevent learning loss while students are out of school. Reading for pleasure also benefits adults. It improves brain health, reduces stress, and offers opportunities for learning and growth.

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Supporting the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and serves nearly 1.6 million people. In 2022, residents checked out 7.9 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through OverDrive, making KCLS the second-highest digital circulating library system in the U.S. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.
