Bloodworks Northwest declares Emergency Blood Shortage

Wednesday, January 11, 2023

Facing a severe blood shortage, Bloodworks Northwest is issuing a “Code Red” emergency asking everyone who is eligible and feeling healthy to fill immediate appointments to give blood.

Donations dropped significantly due to winter weather and the holiday season.

Hospitals have been advised to conserve the limited onsite supplies to maintain a supply for emergencies, especially Type O blood and platelets.

A Code Red is declared after four consecutive days of emergency levels.

Same day blood donation appointments are available at most locations. Right now, universal Type O blood is extremely important, especially for trauma and emergency situations when the patient’s blood type in unknown.

Showing up for the donation appointment is just as important as making it. People not showing up to appointments impacts the ability to collect enough blood. For assistance finding an appointment or to reschedule, call 800-398-7888.

All regions of the U.S. are currently experiencing a shortage, so assistance from other centers is uncertain or minimal.

Responding to emergencies requires blood that is already collected, tested, on the shelves, and ready for immediate use by first responders and medical staff.

39% of the population has O+ blood, and only 9% of the population has O- blood. You do not need to know your blood type to become a blood donor.

It takes about an hour to give blood from check-in to post-donation cookie. Information about who can donate and where, is available at www.bloodworksnw.org

Locations are being scouted; several Shoreline venues have expressed a willingness to host.

Give one more gift this season

Wednesday, December 22, 2021

By Tom Petersen

Donating blood is a profound gift people can make to their communities, saving lives and healing the sick.

Bloodworks Northwest has several donation centers and Pop-Up locations taking appointments throughout the Greater Puget Sound region.

Adults over age 18, over 110 pounds, and in good health are generally eligible and encouraged to donate.

Recent COVID vaccines do not interfere with a person's ability to give blood. All potential donors are screened for health, travel, and medication risks to ensure a safe blood supply.

Whole blood donations are made at all Bloodworks locations. It takes about 45 minutes, from check-in to cookies. A unit of whole blood can help up to three patients.

Bloodworks also need platelet and double red-cell donations. This is a longer process and is only available at permanent donor centers.

Appointments can be made at www.bloodworksnw.org or by calling 800-398-7888. First-timers are welcome and encouraged!

Bloodworks Northwest declares Code RED - Donors needed to book appointments immediately

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

Code RED: Critical shortage of blood

Bloodworks Northwest declared a “Code Red” alert to combat the ongoing significant blood shortage affecting local hospitals and trauma centers across the Pacific Northwest over the last three weeks.

Less than a 24-hour supply is all that remains on the near-empty shelves at Bloodworks. Because Types O and A blood are in critically short supply, Bloodworks cannot keep hospital inventories full. Hospitals have been advised to conserve onsite supplies to maintain a supply for emergencies.

Donors in Washington and Oregon must respond to this emergency by booking and keeping appointments to donate every 56 days.

“Blood is being shipped to hospitals faster than it’s being collected,” said Bloodworks EVP of Blood Services Vicki Finson.
“We’re actively communicating with hospitals to conserve blood and appealing to donors to book appointments so that doctors don’t need to make difficult decisions like canceling surgeries or postponing treatments based on the blood supply.

"And because donation is by appointment-only, if you cannot make your appointment, it’s critical to cancel so others can fill in for you.”

Facts:
  • Donations are short 700 units a week compared to the need; 35,000 donors needed to fill open appointments by Memorial Day; 78,000 by Independence Day.
  • A sustained increase in patient demand for blood, combined with low donor turnout, means only 85% of the blood needed by local patients is now available.
  • Hospitals are demanding more blood than the local community supply can currently support; record needs fluctuating daily between 10 – 18% above normal usage.
  • Bloodworks is asking Washington and Oregon hospitals to “actively conserve” blood.
  • “Donor Fatigue”: A combination of warm weather, a feeling that the pandemic may almost be over, the number of donors booking and keeping their appointments have dropped significantly – the worst (most sustained) appointment no-show rate since shortly after the pandemic began.
  • All regions of the U.S. are currently experiencing a shortage, so assistance from other centers is uncertain or minimal. Indeed, centers across the nation have been asking Bloodworks for help.
  • Responding to emergencies requires blood that is already collected, tested, on the shelves, and ready for immediate use. Bloodworks needs at least a four-day inventory to respond immediately to emergencies or a dramatic increase in needs from patients.
  • Because of the pandemic, appointments are required, which means Bloodworks can only accommodate a fixed number of donation appointments per day. People not showing up to appointments impacts the ability to collect enough blood. For assistance finding or rescheduling an appointment, please call 800-398-7888.
  • There is no waiting period before giving blood after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination!

“Maintaining a safe and reliable blood supply is critical to public health and the ability of trauma centers to respond to emergencies,” said Bloodworks Northwest President and CEO Curt Bailey.

“The community must immediately prioritize donating blood for the health of local patients, including individuals with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.“

95 year old Shoreline man is a regular Red Cross blood donor

Tuesday, April 13, 2021

Carl Garrison of Shoreline
By Ray Lapine

In August of 1945, Carl Garrison was a nineteen-year-old Marine deployed to Okinawa where forces were massing to invade the Japanese Home Islands.

He was there when President Truman ordered atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Soon after those attacks, Japan surrendered, ending World War II before the planned invasion could happen.

Now, at age 95, Garrison continues to serve his country and his community. A frequent blood donor at Red Cross blood drives, he says,

“I think as long as you are able to give blood and there are other people who need it, I think it should be done.”

In Washington State, you must be at least 16 years old to give blood, but there is no upper age limit.

In other words, you are never too old to give blood. Garrison’s son points out that his dad not only can give blood, “he insists on it.”

“It’s something that I can do at my age,” explains Carl. “My balance prevents me from doing a lot of physical things. But something I can do, because I’m healthy, is go ahead and donate blood for people who can’t even do that much.”

Carl Garrison and the phlebotomy team at a 2020 blood drive

“I’m really proud of my dad,” his son says.

Carl Garrison lives in Shoreline. In addition to donating blood, he has volunteered his time to the American Legion and helps out at Annie’s Community Kitchen in Edmonds. That organization provides a weekly dinner that’s free for anyone who needs it.

Garrison credits his mother for his desire to help others. She taught him the Golden Rule from the Bible. “It always worked for her,” he says, “and it worked for me. I’ve tried to give off and on when I can, and I’ve had it come right back to me.”

Looking into the future, he expects to be at a Red Cross blood drive every other month.

“It’s a very good thing to do. It’s simple. It’s easy. There are no after effects. I think everybody that can do it, should do it, because there are so many people that need it.”
