Make Your Gift This Season

Shoreline area Veterans invited to donate blood November 9

Tuesday, October 6, 2020

Shoreline area Veterans invited to donate blood November 9 at American Legion Post 227 and become heroes (again) for patients in need

To be a United States Military Veteran is to be a hero. A fact that will be celebrated on November 9, by the American Red Cross and American Legion Post 227 with a socially distanced blood drive and bar-b-que.

There is a constant need for blood donors, but on this day the American Legion is inviting Veterans specifically to answer the call of duty for patients in need and donate blood.

“We know how much Veterans have already given to their community and country. By donating blood, they are once again showing generosity of spirit and giving the gift of life,” says Charles Grenard, Post 227’s second vice commander.

It's only natural that The American Legion - with community service as one of its pillars - be heavily involved in blood donation efforts. This will be the third Red Cross blood drive hosted at Post 227 since June.

Mr. Grenard expects to see lots of current Legionnaires donating at the drive and is excited about the prospect of connecting with new, younger veterans from the community.

Donating blood is one of the simplest things a person can do to help save a patient’s life. For the hour it takes to give blood, there could be a whole community of people thankful for another birthday given to their loved one.

The drive will take place November 9, 2020 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm at 14521 17th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155. Outdoor space will be provided for veterans to safely gather, visit and enjoy complimentary snacks before and after their donation.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins can sometimes be accommodated early in the day. Use sponsor code: SHORELINE when scheduling.

To make an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

Completion of a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Local blood supply in danger because of cancellation of school and employer blood drives

Monday, April 6, 2020

Physical Distancing directives have meant the cancellation of the school and employer blood drives that maintain the local blood supply, putting our local blood supply in danger of collapse.

While inventories are now holding steady as faithful donors and first-time donors respond to the urgent need, continued help is needed as social distancing continues.

Blood donation is exempt from Governor Inslee’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy order. Blood donation is a controlled activity conducted using strict sanitation measures. Routine blood donor screening methods are expected to reliably protect the blood supply, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion-transmitted coronavirus.

Stay Home. Stay Healthy. Give Blood.

New donors are needed now to step-up and save a life, and for donors to make this a generous and consistent habit. All types of blood are needed for cancer treatment, trauma cases, and many other situations. The process only takes an hour and actual donation time is about 10 minutes.

Bloodworks Northwest has more information on coronavirus, who is eligible to donate blood, and donation locations HERE

There is a location at Northgate:

The contact center team remains open Monday – Saturday, however, they are experiencing higher than normal call and email volume, so wait times and reply times are longer than usual.

If you’re able, leave a message at schedule@bloodworksnw.org

Bloodworks is accepting donations by appointment-only in order to comply with social distancing guidelines. You can make an appointment for donation by visiting the website or by calling 800-398-7888.

Blood drive Saturday by Shoreline City Hall

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

A blood drive is coming your way and we need donors to commit to saving lives!

Sign Up Here!

Bloodworks leaders and physicians are working to address the concern that as fears of coronavirus heighten, low donor participation will harm the blood supply.

“We can’t allow what’s happening to blood inventories in other countries affected by COVID-19, where they’re seeing sharp declines in donation, to happen here,” said Curt Bailey.
“Our community strives to maintain a four-day supply of blood. A sudden drop in the blood supply will have consequences and put surgeries and patients at risk. If you’re healthy and haven’t donated recently, please make an appointment to donate this week and plan to become a regular donor so the blood supply is always strong.”

Information is available at Bloodworks to help answer questions or concerns people may have about donating blood.

Don’t forget: Eat before and after you donate, stay hydrated, bring your photo ID or donor card
For other drive locations or questions about eligibility: BloodworksNW.org or call 800-398-7888
The best superheroes ride in style. You should too. Donors respond to the call for blood

Monday, March 9, 2020

Several enthusiastic donors were waiting when the bloodmobile opened on Saturday in Richmond Beach. They are practicing "social distance" as per Public Health recommendations

By Tom Petersen

With coronavirus depressing blood drive turnouts in many parts of the state, Shoreline and South Snohomish residents read the facts, heard the pleas of the Governor and medical community, and went ahead and filled the big bus in Richmond Beach on Saturday, March 7.

Thirty-three units were collected. Remarkably, every prospective donor was able to give: there were zero deferrals for travel, illness, or low iron.

Bloodworks Northwest thanks all who donated, and encourages everyone to watch for upcoming mobile drives in or near Shoreline, or visit the donor centers in North Seattle or Lynnwood to continue replenishing the depleted supply.

The bloodmobile returns to Richmond Beach on May 2.

Bloodworks Northwest reassures community it is safe to donate blood

Thursday, March 5, 2020

Recognizing that donors may have questions and concerns in light of the state of emergency declared in Washington State following the death of a patient infected with COVID-19, Bloodworks Northwest reassures the community that it is safe to donate blood, and donations are continuously needed.

“We’re actively monitoring the evolving COVID-19 situation and maintaining communication with local health departments,” said Bloodworks President and CEO Curt Bailey.
“Our primary focus is providing a safe and reliable blood supply to our hospital partners across the Northwest, and that’s only possible by making opportunities to donate blood available at our donor centers, area businesses, churches, and schools, and seeing our community continue to turn out for local patients.”

It takes 1,000 people showing up to donate at a donor center or blood drive every day to keep the community’s blood supply at stable levels.

Blood donations not only help those who have suffered trauma, they also help those with cancer and blood disorders, surgery patients, premature babies, and others who cannot live without the support of volunteer blood donors.

Bloodworks officials are concerned that as fears of coronavirus heighten, low donor participation will harm the blood supply.

"We can’t allow what’s happening to blood inventories in other countries affected by COVID-19, where they’re seeing sharp declines in donation, to happen here,” said Curt Bailey.
“Our community strives to maintain a four-day supply of blood. A sudden drop in the blood supply will have consequences and put surgeries and patients at risk. If you’re healthy and haven’t donated recently – or you’re a first time donor – please make an appointment this week and plan to be a regular donor so the blood supply is always strong.”

According to Bloodworks Medical Director of Blood Services Dr. Kirsten Alcorn,

“Bloodworks would like to reassure the community that its policies and procedures have been developed to assure compliance with FDA, CDC, and other applicable recommendations related to COVID-19.”
“All of our processes have been developed to optimize the safety of the blood supply and donors. Routine blood donor screening methods would be expected to reliably protect the blood supply because we routinely ask about illness and travel.”

“We want our community to know that we are addressing their questions and concerns about blood donation and blood safety using the most up-to-date information available,” continued Dr. Alcorn. “We’ll continue to make updates as we learn about the outbreak.”

There have been no reported cases of transfusion-transmitted coronavirus; and respiratory viruses, in general, are not known to be transmitted by blood transfusion. (Source: FDA)

Blood donation takes about an hour from registration to post-donation refreshment. Information about who can donate and where, is available at www.bloodworksnw.org.

Donating blood is an easy item to push aside on your to-do list. Your days are mostly filled with trying to balance work, life, family, pets, appointments, household chores, etc.

What if our small pool of donors all decided, “it can wait”? Flash forward to a month from now. We would be facing a public health crisis. Our hospitals’ shelves would be empty and we would have to refuse patients in need.

An hour out of your day means the world to someone in need. Make the donation, cross it off your to-do list and feel proud you made a difference in someone’s life.

As an added bonus, donors can opt in to a raffle for 2 tickets to a Seahawks home game in December! Visit this website for more information.

Richmond Beach Blood Drive Saturday for Hurricane Dorian relief

Give blood Saturday
By Tom Petersen

The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit will be in Richmond Beach Saturday, September 7, from 10am to noon and 1pm to 4pm.

Blood supplies are low, as they often are at the end of summer and after a holiday weekend, but this week things are critical as blood services across the nation have rushed what they can spare to the areas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

People who donated in Richmond Beach in July are eligible to donate again. The many first-timers who have come to the RB Drive in 2019 are encouraged to return for another helping of cookies and juice!

And you back-to-schoolers . . . did you know that if you are between 16 and 18 and over 125 pounds, you can donate with parent permission AND earn a Volunteer Hour from Shorewood High? Just bring your form, along with photo ID (like everyone else).

The Bloodmobile parks at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center. Appointments can be made online but walk-ups are welcome and needed!
