National blood shortage is critical after El Paso shootings

Sunday, August 4, 2019

Blood bank shortages of whole blood in its specific type A, B, O, both positive and negative, are all too common across America – especially in summer.

The El Paso tragedy Saturday hit their services dramatically, and exceeded their capacity to process donors.

There are four local opportunities coming up to donate blood, starting on Monday.

Running on empty: your community needs you to donate blood

Running on empty: Your community needs you to donate blood

Friday, August 2, 2019

Donating blood makes a huge, life-saving impact for patients who need help in our area, and this August in particular.

Bloodworks Northwest is asking everyone to help make sure the blood supply is strong during these demanding summer months. Trauma cases tend to spike significantly from summer mishaps, and we need to make sure people have access to the blood they need when plans take a turn.

We have blood drives coming up in this area all summer long, including these opportunities during the first two weeks of August.

Celebrate "62@62" and get a commemorative magnet for donating blood in Richmond Beach

Thursday, July 4, 2019

By Tom Petersen

The Richmond Beach Blood Drive comes to the Shoreline Fire Safety Center -- Station 62 -- for the 62nd time on Saturday, July 6.

This is worthy of celebration, so Bloodworks Northwest hopes that your holiday weekend festivities include a stop at the bloodmobile. All donors will take home a limited edition "62 @ 62" magnet!

People over age 16 are screened for eligibility in the air-conditioned unit, where giving blood takes about 45 minutes, door to cookies. 16 to 18 year olds need parental consent; all prospective donors need photo ID.

Donations are gratefully accepted from 10am to noon and from 1pm to 4pm. The Fire Safety Center is at the corner of Richmond Beach Rd and 20th Ave NW.

Make appointments online

Last year the Richmond Beach Community Drive celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The first two events were at the Richmond Beach Library, but later in 2008 the drive moved to Station 62 with the gracious cooperation of the Shoreline Fire Department.

Much thanks also goes to Bloodworks' longtime cooperating businesses, D'z Barbershop and Hill's Restaurant, which support the bloodmobile staff on-site.

Community Blood Drive at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church – Monday, June 24, 2019

A taste of summer weather came early this year with plans for summer fun and vacations on many minds! Blood donations decrease during the summer as high school and college students (and many of us!) take off on their (our!) summer vacations.

The need for blood products, however, is ongoing.

Please consider being someone’s lifesaver this summer by joining us at our community blood drive and helping to boost the summer supply of blood and blood products for our neighbors with ongoing or unexpected critical needs for these products.

Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church is hosting a community blood drive with BloodworksNW (BWNW).

Monday, June 24, 2019, 1-7pm (closed 3-4pm)
Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, 17440 Brookside Blvd NE, Lake Forest Park.

For appointments: use the BWNW mobile app, visit the website and fill in the date and city, or call 1-800-398-7888 (use sponsor code: 1411).

Walk-ins are always welcome! Bring or invite a friend! (Photo ID or BWNW/PSBC blood donor card required at time of donation.)

Thanks for considering and helping us to meet our community and emergency response needs for blood and blood products by sharing a little time and blood at our (or another!) community blood drive.

Especially Type O
By Tom Petersen

Bloodworks Northwest is hoping for 35 blood donors Saturday in Richmond Beach!

It is Celebration Day, so the drive is from 8:30am to 2:30pm, so everyone has the afternoon to enjoy the Strawberry Festival, Library Art Show, and Kruckeberg Garden Open House.

The event will be set up inside the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

The old fire truck and the ATV will be outside for everyone to admire.

Richmond Beach Blood Drive goes indoors and goes early

Wednesday, May 8, 2019

By Tom Petersen

Attention, blood donors! This Saturday's event in Richmond Beach, May 11, 2019, will be inside the fire station at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th, not in a bloodmobile.

This will be more comfortable and allow for greater numbers and faster service. The drive is also at a special, earlier time: it starts at 8:30am and is over at 2:30pm.

The hope is that the blood drive will fit better with everyone's Richmond Beach Celebration schedule.

It's festival day in the neighborhood, but blood donors will have plenty of time to catch the shows and have post-donation lunch in the Community Park, check out the Art Show, cruise the Richmond Beach Rehab car show, and tour the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.

*Appointments are still available and welcome; Bloodworks Northwest expects to welcome a lot of walk-ups and is prepared to handle them. See you there!

*Search by Richmond Beach and 5/11/19

Richmond Beach's 10th Anniversary Blood Drive Saturday

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

By Tom Petersen

A decade ago, Young Adult Librarian Aarene Storms looked at the meeting room at the Richmond Beach Library and wondered what inarguably good event belonged at that neighborhood nexus, in a community so enthusiastic and generous. The obvious answer: A blood drive.

It only took two visits from the then-Puget Sound Blood Center before the every-eight-week event outgrew the library. The Shoreline Fire Department's Melanie Granfors welcomed the drive to the Fire Safety Center just a block away, though, and ten years, 1200 donations, and 150 gallons later, the now-Bloodworks Northwest event is a happy institution in Richmond Beach.

To commemorate the milestone, special RB 10 magnets, window clings and luggage tags will be given to all who give a pint this Saturday, September 8. The bloodmobile will be at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, in front of the fire station and next to D'z Barbershop, the drive official business partner for all ten years, and Hill's Restaurant, the other great on-site supporter.

Donations can be made by appointment (at www.bloodworksnw.org) or by walking up between 10 a.m. and noon or 1pm and 4pm. Donors need a photo ID. High school students over 16 years and 125 pounds may donate with written parental permission, and earn an hour of Volunteer credit from Shorewood High School.

SPECIAL PLEA: Bloodworks Northwest is making a big push this Fall to get people to donate blood before the inevitable storms and hurricanes elsewhere in the country lead to emergencies and shortages. Now is the time!

Goodies for blood donors Saturday
By Tom Petersen

Being a regular blood donor is one of those great habits, beneficial to the donor and to the community.

The Richmond Beach neighborhood is celebrating its tenth year of hosting a mobile blood drive by giving away some goodies to those who leave a pint of the ol' crimson.

The mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm Saturday, July 7.

People who donate can choose a special, limited-edition RB commemorative magnet or window sticker as a little token of appreciation, and to show what a great, generous contribution the neighborhood has made for a solid decade.

Appointments can be made online. Walk-ups are encouraged! Please bring photo ID.

General information here.
