Idea for a New Year's Resolution: Be a Regular Blood Donor

Thursday, January 4, 2018

A blood drive reminds us that we have so much to be thankful for— especially our health. Every blood donor is a potential lifesaver. Every unit of whole blood collected is typically separated into blood’s components-- platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate, and red cells-- and can benefit up to three patients.

Bloodworks supports 90 hospitals in the Northwest. Blood is needed every day to meet the needs of patients having surgery, organ transplants, receiving cancer treatment, or therapies for blood disorders.

Bloodworks needs 30 donors right now. Can you be one of them?

Shoreline responds to post-hurricane blood emergency

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

By Tom Petersen

A near-capacity 28 people came to donate blood at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center on Saturday as the call for help went out nationwide in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit collected 25 pints of blood, which, split into components, can help as many as 75 people.

Many thanks to those donors and to Shoreline Fire Department, Hill's Restaurant, and Owen Petersen for helping host the blood drive.

The effects of Harvey will be felt for weeks or months to come. Blood donors will be needed on a continuing basis; prospective donors can check NW Bloodworks for mobile drives and/or donation center open hours.

From Bloodworks Northwest

Thank you so much to the Lake Forest Park community for your ongoing dedication to donating blood!

Help restore local blood supplies at Richmond Beach blood drive Saturday

Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Bloodworks Northwest has already sent emergency shipments of blood components to Texas.

Units from Bloodworks were among the first to reach flood-ravaged Houston over the weekend.

“While our primary mission supports local patients, when catastrophes happen we do whatever we can to help -- even when local supplies are as tight as they’ve been in recent weeks,”
James P. AuBuchon, MD, president and CEO of Bloodworks said, “It is our amazing donors who make it possible.”

“We’re asking local donors who have not donated recently -- regulars and first-timers -- to help us restore local inventories by donating this week,” AuBuchon said.

“Having seen the images from Houston, we need to be ready to respond if additional shipments to Texas are needed in the days and weeks ahead to help people recover from the devastation caused by Harvey and its aftermath.”

Red Cross blood drive at Iora Primary Care on Aug 17

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Every 2 seconds in the United States someone needs blood. Volunteers who donate blood through the American Red Cross get the good feeling that comes from knowing they may have helped save a life.

The American Red Cross invites you to help save lives by donating blood at our next lora Primary Care blood drive at Shoreline Office, located in the Meeting Room, at 15214 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133, on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

To schedule an appointment call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the website and enter the Sponsor Code: IoraPrimaryCare.

Get your $5 Target eGiftCard™!*
Come in to donate and as a special thank you for making donation a priority, we’ll email you a $5 Target eGiftCard™. Use it on a purchase of your choice, because you deserve it!

Blood is a perishable, lifesaving product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. Many people assume that other people will donate and blood will always be there when needed.

Unfortunately, less than 38 percent of the American population is eligible to give blood, and only a fraction of those people actually do.

Blood products are used for patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients, and accident and trauma victims. Volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood used for transfusions, and the blood must be there before it is needed in order to help save lives

For more information about eligibility, call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the website

Blood donors needed Saturday

Holiday Staycation? Come down to Richmond Beach!

By Tom Petersen

The Bloodworks Northwest air-conditioned mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th NW this Saturday, July 1st, from 10am to 4pm.

Summertime and holiday weekends deplete the nation's blood supply, with lower blood drive turnouts hitting at the same time as increased blood needs.

Robust drives in places like Richmond Beach will not only save lives locally, but will provide relief to parts of the country where supplies fall so low as to create "blood emergencies."

"Maxing out" the mobile unit --- 30 donors --- is the goal.

Signing up for an appointment is recommended. Going to BloodworksNW, searching Drives, and checking zip code 98177 starts the quick and easy process for new and returning donors.

If a particular time is shown as "full," though, it is still possible to walk up and get in, at that time or any other.

Returning donors are encouraged to bring a friend. New donors are welcome and needed. Young donors between ages 16 and 18 are eligible with parental consent, and Shorewood High students earn an hour of Volunteer Credit if they donate.

As always, Bloodworks's cooperating business, D'z Barbershop, is offering its famous "Clip and Drip Special:" Get a haircut at the regular price, go donate blood for free.
