Richmond Beach Blood Drive on New Year's Eve

Friday, December 30, 2016

By Tom Petersen

The year-end party starts early in Richmond Beach, with the arrival of the mobile unit for THE last blood drive in Bloodworks Northwest's vast territory for 2016!

Come ring out the old by wringing out some crimson for the best cause there is: saving lives.

It's milestone season for the Richmond Beach Blood Drive, too: In October it celebrated the 50th modern-day blood drive in RB, and this March it will be the 50th event at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center.

In between is this Saturday's New Year's Eve Blood Drive, and sometime on Saturday Bloodworks will collect the 1000th pint donated in the neighborhood.

Richmond Beach's bloodmobile welcomed its 1000th registrant two years ago, but because some people are inevitably deferred for precautionary medical reasons, the number of pints actually collected lags a bit behind.

Coincidentally, the same day as that 1000th registrant, Richmond Beach topped 100 gallons collected.

Now, it is certain that the 1000th pint will be collected Saturday.
Whoever gives pint #1000 will receive a Bloodworks goodie bag!

Many people have already made appointments but there are still spaces available, and walk-ups are always welcome and needed.

The Bloodmobile will be at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, open from 10am to noon and 1pm to 4pm. Please bring photo I.D.

Appointments can be made online or by calling 1-800-398-7888.

Donate Blood in Richmond Beach Saturday

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

By Tom Petersen

The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit returns to Richmond Beach this Saturday, October 22. It is hoped that another good turn out will fill the bus, as the neighborhood did in August.

The bloodmobile is open from 10am to noon, and from 1pm to 4pm. Appointments are recommended but not necessary; walk-ups are encouraged and needed! All donors must have photo ID.

The Richmond Beach blood drive is held in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

There is always the need for new donors, and experienced donors are encouraged to bring a friend! A recent regulatory change from the Food and Drug Administration limits people to five donations a year (down from six), and deferrals for people who have lately traveled to areas afflicted with the Zika virus have also impacted donations.

The Zika "quarantine" is only 28 days. All potential donors receive a screening; people not sure if they are eligible, but who would like to donate blood, should come to the bloodmobile to find out.

Great news for those who have missed the opportunity to donate blood during the week when the Bloodmobile comes to the Lake Forest Park Town Center.

The bloodmobile will be participating in the Northshore Preparedness and Safety Fair on Saturday.

The Fair provides educational information, tips about being prepared for small or large emergency situations, as well as hands on activities.

Donations are always needed and if there were an actual emergency in our area there would be a critical need for blood supplies!

Come join neighbors and be part of Emergency Preparedness at Third Place Commons between 10am to 2pm.

The bloodmobile will be on the Town Center upper level from 10am – 4pm (closed for lunch 12:00 noon - 1pm)

Register online or walk-ins welcome.

Thank you for considering the gift of life for those in need!

Come Back, Blood Donors! Zika deferrals only 28 days

Thursday, August 25, 2016

Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach this Saturday

By Tom Petersen

Blood collections nationwide are down as much as 20% as precautionary measures to stop the spread of the Zika virus have deferred many willing or potential donors over the last 8 months.

Blood supplies in the Puget Sound region, like everywhere else, have dropped to "crisis" levels this summer.

The normal seasonal lull, added to the loss of locals that have travelled to Latin America and the Caribbean, and exacerbated by the humanitarian need to ship some blood products to Florida and Puerto Rico, where entire populations are in a state of perpetual ineligibility, has supplies of most blood types at "critical" levels.

Zika deferrals not long or permanent: Bloodworks Northwest is getting the word out that donors who have been deferred for recent travels to Zika-affected territories are only discouraged from giving blood for 28 days.  People who have not fallen ill during that window are safe to donate.  People who went abroad in the winter or spring can donate blood this summer.

Past deferrals may not permanently disqualify donors: People who have thought about or tried to donate blood but were asked not to for whatever reason -- travels to disease-ridden locales, low iron, sniffles, temporary or past use of certain medications, new tattoos -- are encouraged to come back. The standard questionnaire and consultation at the bloodmobile or donation center may well reveal that it's safe to donate again.

Deferred? Help find new donors: Past blood donors who, for whatever reason, can no longer give blood are encouraged to help recruit new donors. The number one inspiration for new blood donors is not posters, A-boards, or articles like this one, but the personal example of a friend or family member that can attest to the ease and importance of donating blood.

The need for blood is constant: Even with advanced surgical techniques that lesson the need for large transfusions for some surgeries, the need for blood never slackens for cancer patients, people with blood disorders, and the "misadventurous."

Air-conditioned Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach this Saturday: Bloodworks' mobile unit will be at its customary spot, in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road (195th) and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm Saturday, August 27.

Appointments are recommended but not necessary; walk-ups are welcome and encouraged.  All donors must have photo ID or a Bloodworks / Puget Sound Blood Center card. The bloodmobile is closed for lunch from noon to 1.
