Three local blood drives - Richmond Beach and Lake Forest Park

Thursday, June 23, 2016

Like blood banks all over the United States, Bloodworks Northwest responded to the Orlando crisis by sharing their stock.

Although our local blood supply has been very tight in recent weeks, when the appeal for blood came from Orlando we responded immediately, sending more than 70 units of blood components.
That tragedy demonstrates to the community Bloodworks Northwest’s need for blood donors every day to maintain a strong blood supply to meet the needs of patients having surgery, organ transplants, receiving cancer treatment, or therapies for blood disorders and to be able to respond when a tragedy does occur.

ALL BLOOD TYPES ARE NEEDED
  • O- and B- still at EMERGENCY levels, less than a one day supply
  • O+ and A- at CRITICAL Levels, less than a two day supply
  • A+ and AB Plasma at ALERT Levels, less than a three day supply
We are asking donors to make an appointment to donate -- to help us rebuild our inventories, so we can always meet the needs of local patients. Will you please donate blood at one of these local events?

Give blood Tuesday in LFP

Blood Drive at LFP Town Center, lower mall level near entrance on Tuesday, April 26, 11am – 5pm (closed for lunch 1-2pm)

Here’s a great opportunity to help those in need! Bloodworks Northwest has announced there is a shortage of both O + and O – blood types and is sending a special call for people with those types.

O Negative is the “universal” blood type that can be transfused into any patient and is thus especially needed.

The bloodmobile will be parked on the lower level of the LFP Town Center near the mall entrance.

No appointment necessary, drop-ins always welcome! If you prefer to make an appointment, call Bloodworks Northwest at 800-398-7888 or register online.

Thank you for considering the gift of life!

Earth Day Blood Drive Saturday

Tom Petersen steps up
Bloodmobile at Shoreline Fire Safety Center

Fill'er Up! Earth Day Blood Drive April 23
By Tom Petersen

One of the great neighborhood traditions, the Earth Day Blood Drive, is back for the eighth year. The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit will be by the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW on that Spring-y-est of Days, Saturday, April 23.

Bloodworks hopes to fill the schedule. Donations are taken between 10am and noon and 1pm and 4pm. Appointments, which can be made online, are recommended but are not strictly necessary: walk-ups are welcome and encouraged.

Low on Type O

Bloodworks is reporting a shortage of both O+ and O- blood, and so is sending out a special call for people with those types. O Negative is the "universal" blood type that can be transfused into any patient, and is thus especially needed.

Extra Protection

In order to protect the blood supply, people who have recently travelled to South America and may have been exposed to the Zika virus are being deferred. People unsure about their eligibility are encouraged to come to the bloodmobile for a screening.

Bloodmobile will be at the Safety Center in
Richmond Beach Saturday

Bloodworks Looking to Fill Up Mobile Unit in Richmond Beach on Saturday

By Tom Petersen

The bloodmobile is coming to the Shoreline Fire Safety Center in Richmond Beach Saturday, hoping to be filled with donors. The Bloodworks unit will be open from 10am to noon and from 1 to 4pmThe Safety Center is at the corner of 20th NW and Richmond Beach Road.

The regular-capacity bloodmobile, with staff and beds enough to accommodate up to six donors an hour, will strive keep any waiting to a minimum. Richmond Beach blood drives always enjoy a robust turnout, but rushes have sometimes overwhelmed the staff. Appointments are recommended but not required.

Donating blood takes about 45 minutes, door to door.

Zika Virus Concern

All blood agencies follow strict safety guidelines to protect the blood supply. While most healthy adults over 110 pounds should have no trouble donating, there is an ever-growing list of medications and travel restrictions that may trigger deferrals. The latest concern is travel to South American countries that have been hit by the Zika Virus. Bloodworks estimates that 2% of all potential donors may have to be turned away as a precaution, as they might have been exposed to the virus.

It is impossible to get Zika, or any virus, from donating blood. With more deferrals, it is important that new donors be found, and that occasional donors come out more regularly.

LFP blood drive registers 34 new donors

Bloodworks Northwest was euphoric at the success of the blood drive in Lake Forest Park on Tuesday.

We were able to register 34 donors and of those, 25 units of volunteered blood were collected! Since each unit of blood is able to save up to three lives, the blood that were donated is able to save up to 75 local patients!

The chocolate may have been an inducement, as donors were given Theo Chocolate bars, but the chance to give something truly meaningful and life-saving at this season was probably the biggest factor.

It was a great year working with you and we look forward in having many more successful drives at the Lake Forest Park Town Center!

Thank you to the donors of Lake Forest Park!

Perfect Day for a Blood Drive: Halloween

Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach Saturday

By Tom Petersen

Yes.

They vant to suck your blood.

The Bloodworks Northwest mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW in Richmond Beach, on Saturday, Halloween, from 10am to noon and 1 to 4pm.

Though the bloodmobile staff can be counted upon to play up the spirit of the occasion --- it's their favorite day of the year --- there's nothing ghoulish about donating blood. Most adults over 110 pounds (and 16 to 18 year olds, with parental permission) are eligible, and there is a constant need for blood. Each pint can be divided for use in saving lives, helping people with chronic ailments, and for important medical research.

Donating blood takes just 45 minutes, from walking in to walking out. It is safe and a visit to a bloodmobile or donation center is like a mini check-up. In Richmond Beach, where the neighborhood theme is "We Show Up!", it's like a little community party, with a jovial, festive mood.

Appointments are recommended but not required. They can be made online (go to Donate Blood >> Search Blood Drives >> 98177). Walk-ins are welcome and encouraged. Bloodworks is always looking for new donors. Experienced donors should check to see that it's been eight weeks since their last donation; the previous Richmond Beach blood drive was cancelled because of a staffing shortage, but there was also a huge response to the emergency blood drives in September after the Aurora Bridge bus crash disaster.

All prospective donors need to bring photo I.D.

Shoreline & LFP weekend Blood Drives bring outpouring of support for bus crash victims

Monday, September 28, 2015

By Tom Petersen

Last week's Aurora Bridge disaster sent three dozen people to area hospitals, many with severe injuries requiring massive blood transfusions. Reserves were depleted and supplies of some blood types dipped to critical levels.

Bloodworks Northwest made an urgent call for donors, and the response was overwhelming throughout the region. Lake Forest Park and Shoreline made a substantial contribution, with large turnouts at the Shoreline Masonic Lodge and at Lake Forest Park Town Center on Saturday.

At the latter event in LFP, in fact, they "maxed," receiving all the donors the mobile unit was equipped to handle, such that walk-ups were being referred to the donor centers or other drives.

The results:

Shoreline Masonic Lodge
Registered donors – 47
First time donors – 7
Units collected – 42

Lake Forest Park Town Center
Registered donors – 41
First time donors – 13
Units collected – 35

Both drives attracted a large number of first-time donors, along with many people who were eligible and available after the unforeseen cancellation of the Richmond Beach event at the end of August.

People still wishing to donate blood are encouraged to go to BloodworksNW and look for upcoming drives; the next in the area is in Kenmore, Tuesday, September 29, at Northlake Lutheran Church, from 1-7pm.

Donor Centers are in Lynnwood, at the southeast corner of the intersection of Aurora and 196th, and at 10357 Stone Ave N in North Seattle.

Blood Bank issues urgent appeal for additional donors in wake of Aurora Bridge tragedy

Thursday’s tragic motor vehicle accident on the Aurora Bridge is making major demands on the local blood supply. Bloodworks Northwest has issued an urgent appeal to blood donors to help meet those critical needs.

“To avoid a crisis for the local blood supply we’re asking donors who have not donated recently to schedule an appointment as soon as they can at one of our 12 centers, or to find a mobile drive in their community close to where they live or work. There is a special need for O-positive and O-negative blood types,” said James P. AuBuchon, MD, president and chief executive officer of Bloodworks Northwest.

The bloodmobile will be stationed in the upper level parking lot of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park, near Third Place Books, on Saturday, September 26, 2015, from 10:00am to 4:00pm (closed 12:00 to 1:00pm). To sign up, call 1-800-398-7888, or reserve an appointment online.

Participants are required to present photo identification in order to donate.

Give Twice this summer, starting Saturday

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

By Tom Petersen

The rechristened Bloodworks mobile unit will be at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center in Richmond Beach this Saturday as part of the annual “Give Twice This Summer” campaign.

It will be there, on the corner of Richmond Beach Road at 195th and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm, closing for lunch between noon and 1.

Appointments are encouraged but not required. They can be made online. Walk-ups are welcome, particularly in the early afternoon hours.

The “Give Twice This Summer” campaign was started years ago while the service was still known as the Puget Sound Blood Center.

Inspiring this year’s Richmond Beach neighborhood theme, “We Show Up!,” donors have filled the bus to near-capacity every June and August. This helps meet critical needs as vacation mishaps and scheduled surgeries tax the blood supply.

Prospective donors on this upcoming hot weekend might like to know that the bloodmobile is air conditioned.

Donating blood takes about 45 minutes door to door and most healthy adults are eligible. People who are not sure are encouraged to check in and do the questionnaire to find out. Some travel, health, and medication restrictions do disqualify some, so Bloodworks is always looking for new donors to make giving blood a habit.
