Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach on Saturday

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

Give blood - get juice and cookies

By Tom Petersen

The mobile unit from Bloodworks Northwest (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) will be at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW this Saturday, April 25, from 10am until 4pm.

The Richmond Beach neighborhood drive got the "Bloodworks era" off to a rousing start in February with 26 donors. 18 of those had made appointments online to ensure a quick in-and-out, but the bloodmobile had no trouble taking the eight walk-ups that day.

The drive is always looking for "new blood," and especially encourages people who have donated once or twice in the past few years, or young people who donated when in high school, to come back to the neighborhood event and make it an every-other-month routine.

Puget Sound Blood Center is now Bloodworks Northwest

Friday, February 6, 2015

New name showcases comprehensive services provided throughout Northwest
by Tom Petersen

Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) is changing its name to Bloodworks Northwest. PSBC has merged or partnered with several other blood services in the greater Pacific Northwest, and serves hospitals far beyond the Puget Sound area, hence the more inclusive moniker.

Established in 1944, Puget Sound Blood Center was one of the nation’s first independent, non-profit community blood banks, and now serves nearly 90 hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

“The name honors our roots while connecting us to the expanded role we play in patient care and biomedical research in the greater Northwest,” said BloodworksNW President and CEO Dr. James AuBuchon.
“While the new name is a major change for us, our service to local patients and communities is the same as ever. “We’re still the place where donors come to support local patients and give back to the community —just like always. And we are still the source for lifesaving blood that local hospitals turn to.”

As always, donors are welcome at any one of the 12 donor centers.
The closest to Shoreline / Lake Forest Park are found in Lynnwood, at the corner of 196th and Aurora, and North Seattle, at Stone Way and 105th.

There are frequent community blood drives in Shoreline, including the Richmond Beach event on February 21, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

Information about locations and times can be found at Bloodworks  (the old www.psbc.org address will work for another year, too). Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Appointments can be made online or by phone by calling 800-398-7888.

Richmond Beach Blood Drive reaches milestones

Saturday, January 3, 2015

By Tom Petersen

A record-tying 35 people came to the Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit in Richmond Beach last weekend, easily pushing the drive past its goals for the year, but more importantly making a big contribution to the region’s blood supply.

The “big bus” was able to take all 16 donors with appointments, plus the 19 walk-ups that appeared throughout the day. The neighborhood hopes to get the big bus every time, to avoid having to make people wait, or worse, turn people away.

We Show Up
The Richmond Beach blood drives started six and a half years ago and turnout has always been healthy, with an average of 25 people coming to donate at each event and 20 usable pints collected.

According to PSBC, this is very good for a “neighborhood” drive – the people of Richmond Beach and adjacent communities have been showing up as reliably as donors at the more common mobile events that register everybody at a school, business, church, or civic group.

“We Show Up” will be the Richmond Beach blood drive’s theme for 2015.

100 Gallons, 1000 registrants
As anticipated, Richmond Beach collected its 100th gallon since the inception of the drive. Nadia Lorenson was the donor of the 800th pint. As of December 27, the neighborhood needed a slightly-above-average turnout to reach its next milestone, but with so many people showing up, the 1000 registrant mark fell when Maria Jeronimo came through the bloodmobile door.

Looking forward
The bloodmobile will be next be in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW on Saturday, February 21, from 10am to 4pm.

The schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:
April 25,
June 27,
August 29,
October 31, and
December 26.
Appointments to donate can be made, and information about donating blood can be found online

They also show up
The Blood Center thanks its Richmond Beach neighborhood partners, D’z Barbershop and the Shoreline Fire Department, for all their assistance through the years, and Hill’s and Streetzeria Restaurants for being supportive neighbors.

The following businesses graciously allow blood posters in their windows or on their bulletin boards: The Little Store, Richmond Beach Coffee Co., Beach House Greetings, Cloud 9 Dry Cleaning, Richmond Beach Library, Seashore Minimart, Spin Alley, Fred Meyer, and Starbucks.

Thanks also to the Shoreline Area News, The Richmond Beach Community Association, NextDoor Richmond Beach, and PBSC area coordinator Wendy Chu.

Saturday, Give One More Gift: Blood

Big Bloodmobile in front of the Shoreline Fire
Training Center on RB Road

By Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center mobile unit will be at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Avenue NW this Saturday, December 27, from 10am to 4pm.
Most healthy people over age 16, with goodness in their hearts, are able to donate blood. There are some medical and medicinal deferrals that the staff of the bloodmobile can figure out. The recent cautions imposed by the ebola quarantine have trimmed a few potential donors from the rosters, so it is important that new donors be found and that the experienced return to the drives, preferably with friends in tow.
Donating blood is a nice respite from the holiday hubbub. It takes only 45 minutes, from walking in to leaving with cookies and juice on your breath. At press time, the blood center is planning to dispatch the large bloodmobile, able to serve eight donors an hour. This should quicken the pace for walk-ins, but appointments are always encouraged. Appointments can be made online

Richmond Beach Milestones: Blood donors in Richmond Beach this Saturday will have the added joy of being part of the group that gets the neighborhood to the 100 gallon mark.

The 28th registrant on Saturday will also be the 1000th person to visit the bloodmobile since Richmond Beach started its drive about six years ago.

About 250 different people from Shoreline, Woodway, Edmonds, and northern Seattle have made the Richmond Beach blood drive one of the most consistently successful events in the PSBC network.

Blood shortage during holidays

Saturday, December 20, 2014

Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) is issuing an urgent appeal for people to donate blood in the days leading up to the holidays. Although donations normally dip during holiday periods, this year PSBC is already experiencing critical shortages for some blood types.

“When schools are out and holiday activities are at their peak, the number of blood donors falls by at least 25 percent,” said David Leitch, director of donor and volunteer resources for PSBC. “With supplies already low for some blood types, the risk of a supply crisis looms over the holidays.”

PSBC is welcoming donors of all blood types between now and January 5 to maintain a strong supply for patients in need throughout the holiday season. Another reason the need is especially high this year: both Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Thursdays, typically one of the highest collection days of the week.

“The holiday season is a time of giving, and we are hoping that people – from frequent donors to first timers -- help us to meet the need,” Leitch said. “We’re asking people to schedule just one hour to save lives by donating blood between now and January 5.”

Information about locations and times can be found here. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Appointments can be made online or by phone by calling 1-800-398-7888.

The Bloodmobile will be in Richmond Beach on the Saturday after Christmas, December 27, from 10am to 4pm, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

The Antidote for Halloween: Donate Blood on Saturday, November 1

Tom knows how to get treats after
Halloween!
By Tom Petersen

Thumb your nose at Dracula, the morning after!

The Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit will be at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW this Saturday, November 1.

Walk-ups are welcome and appointments are available during the open hours, 10am to noon and 1pm to 4pm. First-timers and experienced donors who haven’t been to the bloodmobile lately are especially encouraged to contribute.

Appointments can be made online under Donation Programs: Search Blood Drives (check Richmond Beach’s zip code, 98177). The blood center is looking to keep the beds full all day!

Most healthy adults are candidates to donate blood, but stringent safeguards defer some because of certain prescription drugs or recent travel to countries with health alerts. People who would like to “give the gift of life” but aren’t sure if they are eligible should come anyway and find out. Donating is safe and the entire process, from checking in to cookies and juice, takes just 45 minutes.

Roll'em Up, Richmond Beach! Blood donors needed Saturday

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

By Tom Petersen

Time to roll up some sleeves and roll up some big numbers for a good cause. The Puget Sound Blood Center's mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW from 10am to 4pm this Saturday, September 6.

People who donated earlier this summer, 8 or more weeks ago, are reminded of the PSBC's "Give Twice This Summer" campaign, and first timers or people who had gotten out of the habit are encouraged to come on down!

Always In Demand
Recent media reports have noted that innovations in surgical procedures have lessened the number of blood transfusions conducted nationwide. In other parts of the country, demand has slackened and some for-profit blood banks have been closed. The Puget Sound Blood Center is a non-profit, however, and is also one of the world's leading institutions for blood research: a portion of all blood collected by PSBC is used for scientific purposes. Therefore, it's as important as ever that experienced donors return, and that new donors join them.

Safety in Numbers
Donating blood is an easy and safe thing to do, and PSBC adheres to the highest standards of hygiene and donor comfort. In a world where more and more people travel and unexpected outbreaks of disease send doctors scrambling, though, all Blood Centers have tightened restrictions to make sure nothing gets into the blood supply. Some otherwise healthy potential donors have been disqualified as a precaution because of past travel or contact with at-risk populations. This means it is ever more important that past donors continue to come to the bloodmobiles, and that they bring some first-timer friends!

Make History, and an Appointment
The Richmond Beach Blood Drive is approaching two milestones: registering its 1000th donor, and drawing the 100th gallon. Both these will be reached by the end of 2014, if the drive keeps up its average turnout. Also, the Puget Sound Blood Center will celebrate its 70th anniversary this October. Being a part of this is as easy as walking up to the bloodmobile on Saturday; donors are encouraged to make an appointment by searching blood drives under Donor Programs at www.psbc.org.

Ve vant your blood - mwahhh - four opportunities to give Aug 25-27

Thursday, August 21, 2014

No, excuses, Shoreliners: The Puget Sound Blood Center's mobile unit will be nigh-on ubiquitous in the heart of downtown at the end of the month, with a range of times available to fit everyone's schedule.

Blood stocks typically dip to critical levels in late summer, as regular donors go on vacation, people schedule elective surgeries, and some peoples' seasonal fun gets a little too spirited. PSBC has added an "emergency" blood drive to a week of regularly-scheduled bloodmobile appearances:

MONDAY, AUGUST 25 @ ST. LUKE'S: "The Commuter" drive is from 1pm to 7pm, perfect for people stopping in on their way home from work. St. Luke's is at 322 North 175th (off Dayton). Appointments encouraged, walk-ups welcome.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 @ WINDERMERE: "The Emergency" drive is from 10am to 4pm at 900 North 185th. Special thanks to Jack Malek and Windermere Real Estate for hosting. Appointments available for all times; Walk-ups needed!

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27 @ WSDOT: "The Early Morning Drain" drive, from 8:30am to 11:30am is great for people on their way to work. 15700 Dayton Ave. North. Appointments recommended, walk-ups welcome.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27 @ CITY HALL: The bloodmobile moves from the DOT parking lot to the Walgreen's at 17524 Aurora for "The Lunch Break" drive from 1pm to 3:30pm. Appointments encouraged, walk-ups welcome.

Most healthy adults over 110 lbs are eligible to donate blood. Donating blood is safe and easy and takes about 45 minutes, from walking in to walking out. Whole blood donations can be made every 8 weeks; people who have already donated once this summer and are not yet eligible can plan on giving again on Saturday, September 6 in Richmond Beach, or look into going to the storefront PSBC facilities in nearby Lynnwood (19723 Highway 99) or North Seattle (10357 Stone Ave.)

The Best Thing You Can Do This Weekend: Donate Blood

Tom Petersen's collection of donor pins
By Tom Petersen

Over the 4th of July weekend, Americans celebrate their independence and liberty in any way that pleases them. Many choose to go to Emergency Rooms, and while most others would pick something more lighthearted, we are reminded that our civic holidays are also times to be big hearted.

The Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Most healthy adults (and 16 and 17 year olds, with parent permission) are eligible to donate. Giving blood takes about 45 minutes, from walking in and signing up to leaving full of cookies and juice.

It’s something nice to do for your country, on your way to or from Saltwater Park.

A photo ID is required.

Hurricane Arthur and local supplies - The first hurricane of the season, on the east coast, sets off a ripple effect of blood shortages across the nation. Hundreds of local blood drives are cancelled this weekend, right when the need for blood spikes because of the holiday. Puget Sound Blood Center, along with scores of similar organizations across the country, will help make up the shortages, but this requires a good turn-out at events like the one in Richmond Beach.

Since the inception of the Richmond Beach blood drives, six years ago, they have collected 758 pints from 927 registrants. If they continue to maintain their average turnout (25) and collection (a couple drams shy of 21) they will register their 1000th donor and hit 100 gallons by the end of the day at the last blood drive of the year, end of December.

Typically, each pint is split three ways (if at all).  The hemophiliacs average out with the people who need whole blood and the portions that go to research, so the estimate is that each pint helps about three people, in some way, eventually.
