Roll'em Up in Richmond Beach - Blood Donors Needed Saturday

Thursday, February 27, 2014

All aboard!
Tom Petersen, aka Capt Blood, opens the door
for donors this Saturday in Richmond Beach

By Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center's mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th NW this Saturday, March 1st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The harsh winter across much of the country has depleted the nation's blood supply, with low turnouts and cancelled drives in the Midwest and Northeast, in particular. Robust blood drives in places like Richmond Beach will not only save lives locally, but will provide a few pints to parts of the country where there are "blood emergencies."

The Richmond Beach blood drives are in their sixth year, and "maxing out" the mobile unit --- 30 donors --- will keep the neighborhood on track to register its 1000th donor by the end of the year.

Signing up for an appointment is recommended. Going to PSBC, searching Drives, and checking zip code 98177 starts the quick and easy process for new and returning donors. If a particular time is shown as "full," though, it is still possible to walk up and get in, at that time or any other. If there is a rush, the location is surrounded by shops and restaurants where prospective donors can get a snack while they wait.

As always, PSBC's cooperating business, D'z Barbershop, is offering its famous "Clip and Drip Special:" Get a haircut at the regular price, go donate blood for free.

Donate like crazy!!!!
Ok, just donate

Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach Saturday
By Tom Petersen

Yes, there's nothing like hemo for the holidays: Richmond Beach's annual "Cold Day, Warm Hearts" blood drive takes place Saturday from 10am to 4pm, rain, snow, or shine, in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th NW.

Giving the gift of life takes just 45 minutes, and the need is acute this time of year. Appointments are recommended but not necessary -- walk-ups are welcome. Search blood drives or call 1-800-398-7888.

The Drive at Five - blood donations in Richmond Beach approaching milestones

Monday, December 16, 2013

Richmond Beach Blood Drive, Saturday, December 21, 10am to 4pm, Fire Safety Center, RB Road
Robert and Deanna of D'z barbershop celebrate
the first 30-Donor day in Richmond Beach, May, 2010.

By Tom Petersen

The Richmond Beach Blood Drive passed its fifth birthday in 2013 and by the end of next year should reach two impressive milestones almost simultaneously: the 1000th donor registration in the community, and the 100th gallon donated.

The drive was started by Richmond Beach Teen Librarian Aarene Storms, and the first two events were held on weekday afternoons in the library meeting room. The King County Library System had qualms about holding the drive there, with six consecutive hours devoted to one activity.

Shoreline Fire Department public relations officer Melanie Granfors then facilitated the move to the Fire Safety Center, where the Puget Sound Blood Center has parked its mobile unit 30 Saturdays since.

The Blood Center sends its mobile units out over 1000 times a year all around Puget Sound. The blood drives range from weekly appearances at large institutions like Boeing, to massive events once or twice a year at high schools, to little three-hour stops at churches and clubs. The Richmond Beach blood drives are actually a rare breed: instead of drawing from a defined pool of donors, as at a church, school, or industry, Richmond Beach is an open-to-all neighborhood drive dependent on goodwill, good habits and good memories among residents.

About 300 different residents of Shoreline, Edmonds, Woodway, and the north end of Seattle have come to the Richmond Beach blood drive, over the years.

Target 2014: 1000 Donors!

Each time someone checks in at the bloodmobile, it counts as someone’s sincere effort to help save lives and give back to the community. Richmond Beach averaged 25 registrations through October 2013, and if the average holds up, the 1000th registration will take place during the last event of 2014.

Neighborhood drive coordinator Tom Petersen is planning celebrations and inviting ideas for commemorative swag. About 300 different residents of Richmond Beach, surrounding neighborhoods, Edmonds, Woodway, and the north end of Seattle have contributed to this total.

Richmond Beach held possibly the coldest blood drive ever:
12 degrees in December 2009

Hundreds Helped

Every unit of blood collected helps as many as three patients. An average of 20 usable pints have been donated at Richmond Beach each drive, and if the neighborhood can keep that up, the 100 gallon mark will be reached in either October or December of 2014. At every blood drive, a donor or two is deferred because of recent travel to at-risk nations or the use of medications that may cause adverse reactions in transfusion patients. Sometimes a unit or two must be discarded because the donors turned out to have illnesses.

Urgent Need in December, January

The holidays are a time for giving, and the need for blood is always acute. The PSBC is asking for donors to pledge now to donate this Winter. New donors are encouraged (as they say in Richmond Beach: Bring a friend!). Appointments can be made online or by calling 800-398-7888. Donations can also be made on other days at other open drives, or by visiting the permanent facilities in Lynnwood and North Seattle.

Warm Hearts for a Cold Day: Donate December 21

On the first day of winter, Saturday, December 21, the Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm (closed for lunch 12-1.) Take a cookies-and-juice break from the season’s hustle and bustle and give the gift that will be the most appreciated!

Beat the Ghouls to it: donate blood before Halloween!

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Little Nosferatu
By Tom Petersen

It’s true: The men and women that staff the bloodmobile know all the jokes and puns, and they love’em. No surprise, then, that phlebotomists and donors alike look forward to Halloween – it’s “their” holiday.  The most festive blood drive of the year comes to Richmond Beach on Saturday, October 26. The Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of 20th Ave NW and Richmond Beach Road, from 10am until 4pm.  (lunch break, 12-1.)

Make an Appointment and Bring a Friend!

The Richmond Beach Community Association Halloween Carnival starts at 3pm on the 26th, so regular neighborhood donors are making morning and early-afternoon appointments. Walk-ins are welcome any time, and there are plenty of afternoon times open. Appointments are a help to the staff, so they can pace the day and advise walk-ups of any wait times.

The PSBC has an excellent and simple on-line sign-up: just click “Donate Blood” and enter the Richmond Beach zip code, 98177, at “Search Blood Drives” for the neighborhood event, as well as others on other dates in and around Shoreline. Appointments can also be made by calling 800-398-7888.

The Richmond Beach neighborhood theme for 2013 is “Bring a Friend,” so they’ll be looking for those “Blood Buddies” – in or out of costume – on Saturday.

Urgent message from Puget Sound Blood Center - give blood Saturday

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Blood drive Saturday at Fire Training Center
1851 NW 195th St

By Jasmine Pannu

FACT: Blood donated by healthy volunteer donors is needed every single day. Recruiting blood donors is a continuous process - 900 donors are needed daily to simply maintain our inventory at safe and sufficient levels.

This week the Puget Sound Blood Center is facing 2 significant challenges:

1.       We are moving into another holiday week. We will lose a day worth of donors on Labor Day, and expect to see an overall decrease in donations the 29th-4th as a result of vacations. We have a huge opportunity this week to make some gains to combat this.

2.      Low inventory.  We are feeling the effects of summer and currently have alert levels of O Pos and Critical levels of O Neg and B Neg. We need to get all these types up to a 4 day supply in the next week and a half and keep our other blood type inventory stable.

These two factors combined threaten the stability of our local blood supply in our immediate future and we need your help. We need to rally as a community and encourage each other to step up and donate blood so that we can make sure that it is there for people who need it.

**The time to act is now**

Saturday, August 24th

Richmond Beach Community Blood Drive
Fire Safety Center—1851 NW 195th St

10am to 4pm
(closed 12pm to 1pm)

Whether or not you can donate blood, you can still help. You can share the urgency of this message and encourage others to donate- you can make sure others around you are aware of this opportunity to provide for our community.

Donate Blood Twice This Summer, starting with this Saturday in Richmond Beach

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Look for the large-capacity bloodmobile in front of
the Shoreline Fire Safety Center in Richmond Beach

By Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center mobile unit will be in Richmond Beach this Saturday, June 29, to kick off their annual “Give Twice This Summer” campaign. Summer is a particularly important time to donate blood, because accidents and elective surgeries are up, while many regular donors go on vacation and large blood drives at high schools and colleges stop. PSBC sent out an alert last week that it is starting the summer about 500 pints below what is considered a safe supply, so every blood drive and donor center is calling for everyone to pitch in.

Snacks for all donors

The bloodmobile will be parked in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center from 10am to 4pm. Appointments are recommended but walk-ups are welcome. Donating blood takes about 45 minutes. The big bus can take 8 to 10 donors an hour, minimizing waiting (as long as everyone doesn’t show up at once).

Richmond Beach’s theme this year is “Bring A Friend!” Blood donations are a cheerful habit to maintain, and Richmond Beach already has a block party atmosphere when the bloodmobile is the neighborhood. PSBC is always looking to expand the pool, though, so experienced donors are encouraged to bring newbies and friends who need to get back in the habit.

No lines, no waiting at this Saturday’s Richmond Beach Blood Drive

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The Big Bus can take ten donors at a time -
no lines, no waiting
Come on down!

By Tom Petersen

PSBC Sending Big Bus

The Puget Sound Blood Center is calling on all donors – and their friends – to come donate blood before leaving on Spring Break. The big bus will be in Richmond Beach this Saturday, April 20, in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm.

The large bloodmobile has an extra technician, a dining-room style recovery area and snack counter, a volunteer to dispense the goodies and good cheer, two screening rooms and four beds. With the ability to take ten donors an hour, everybody that wants to donate, plus their Blood Buddies, should be in and out with minimal waiting, and no one should be turned away.

Sign Up or Walk Up

PSBC still recommends making an online appointment so they have an idea of what to expect. It’s understood that on Saturdays, people like to be flexible, so of course walking up is fine.

Urgent Needs: O neg, A neg, B neg

The rarer blood types are at critically low levels this week, so people with O-, A-, and B- are especially encouraged to come to Richmond Beach, or go to any other PSBC mobile drive in the coming days. There are also permanent storefront donation centers in Lynnwood and North Seattle, open every day.

New Goals for Richmond Beach

Over 36 potential blood donors came to each of the last three Puget Sound Blood Center events in Richmond Beach, but the little bloodmobile could only take 30 in a day. The “Big Unit,” with its capacity of 50, will solve this problem of “coagulation.” This raises new expectations, though: the old neighborhood record was 31, but the PSBC would like to see at least 36 donors Saturday. Local organizers want the full 50, of course!

Blood Buddies Tom and Robert say, "Put'er there, pal!"

By Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center’s mobile unit will be back in Richmond Beach this Saturday, February 23, from 10am to 4pm. This is the first of six blood drives for 2013 in Richmond Beach; they come about every eight weeks, which is the allowable gap between a person’s donations.

The bloodmobile will be parked in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at corner of 20th Ave NW and Richmond Beach Road.

Bring A Buddy!

Richmond Beach’s neighborhood theme this year is “Bring A Friend!”  The neighborhood has a long record of successful drives, thanks to a large group of regular donors, but the pool always needs replenishing. Surveys show that people are more likely to start donating blood, and become regular donors, if they go with an experienced friend who can show them how easy, safe, and fun it is. So, whether it’s a Valentine sweetie or the bud you’re going to watch the Daytona 500 with . . . Bring A Friend!

Book Two!

Donating blood is quick and convenient already, but even more so with an appointment. Reserving a particular time is done online and going to “search drives” under “donate blood.”  There, all drives in the area in the coming weeks (not just Richmond Beach) can be found. Of course, walk-ups are always welcome. PSBC also has permanent, open-daily storefronts in Lynnwood and northern Seattle that are handy to Shoreline.

End the year right: Be a Blood Donor

Blood donors wear their hearts under their sleeves

By Shaina Gates and Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center mobile unit is back in Richmond Beach this Saturday, ready to help you make your last contribution of the year. Many have taken the full week off and donations are down, so we’re asking for your help. Every day your donation matters, but this weekend is especially important.

Why, you ask?

The Blood Center counts on 900 donors each and every day. With most institutions, schools, and businesses closed early this week and many folks out for the rest of this week, the community blood supply will be hit hard. We also anticipate many donors to be unavailable next week with the New Year’s holiday as well. Though your community blood inventory is at 3- and 4- day supplies now, it won’t be in the coming week – we expect to see drops down to 1- and 2-day supplies of certain blood types.

If you are not available, we understand and appreciate you all the same! But if you are in town Saturday and can spare an hour, can we please count on you to lend an arm?

The Bloodmobile will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW. The open hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-ups are welcome and encouraged, but appointments are recommended to cut down on wait times and to keep the unit operating at full efficiency. Appointments are made on-line by going to “search blood drives” in zip code 98177.

Local donors are generous with blood donations after Hurricane Sandy

Saturday, November 10, 2012

By Tom Petersen

The Puget Sound Blood Center bloodmobile was packed last Saturday in Richmond Beach as Shoreliners answered the call to help with the post-Superstorm Sandy recovery.

As many as 300 blood drives a day up and down the East Coast have been cancelled over the last two weeks because donation centers have been damaged or mobile units have nowhere to park.  Across the country, blood banks have stepped up recruitment efforts so that extra pints can be rushed to the storm-ravaged areas, shoring up depleted stocks. Extra donations will be needed for next several weeks because of Sandy. Then the holidays will be upon us, when the need for blood always spikes because regular donors leave town, people choose those vacation days for elective surgeries, and celebrants' mishaps send more people to emergency rooms.

PSBC has brick-and-mortar donation centers in Lynnwood and North Seattle that serve the greater Shoreline community. Bloodmobiles make frequent appearances in and around Shoreline; there are afternoon and evening blood drives this coming Tuesday in nearby Maple Leaf and the next Tuesday, November 20, at St. Luke's in Shoreline.

The website can be searched for blood drives, and appointments can be made online as well.

Appointments are not required but are recommended; they help cut down on wait times and help the staff prepare. 40 people came to the Richmond Beach event but the bloodmobile could only take 31; if more people had made reservations, a larger unit with more staff would have been dispatched.

Your chance to help: give blood Saturday

Saturday, November 3, 2012

Tom's ready to give!
By Tom Petersen

Halloween’s over. Put away the fake blood and break out the real thing!

The Puget Sound Blood Center looking for a big turnout Saturday, November 3 in Richmond Beach.  The mobile unit will be at the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm.

Donors are particularly needed in the hour after lunch, 1pm.to 2pm.  Appointments can be made online, but walk-ups are welcome any time.

Disaster relief, too
Hurricane Sandy caused the cancellations of hundreds of blood drives in communities in the eastern US, so in the coming weeks it will be critical that all other agencies maintain their own supplies and also collect extra to ship to storm-ravaged neighborhoods. Giving blood is a uniquely valuable charitable contribution to our fellow citizens.

Roll’em up on November 3! Remember, every pint helps save three lives!

Red, White, and Blue Blood Drive in Richmond Beach on Saturday

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

By Tom Petersen

Sure, the 4th of July is fun, but invariably some people end up in the hospital . . . where they share space in the Recovery Ward with the kids and teachers who had postponed surgeries until after school let out.

This month sees some of the highest demand for blood transfusions, but stocks dip because the Puget Sound Blood Center can’t hold drives at high schools and colleges. That means it is super important that people donate when the bloodmobile is in their neighborhood.

This Saturday, July 7, the mobile unit will be in Richmond Beach from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

Donating blood is safe and easy.  Most adults over 110 pounds are eligible, as are 16 to 18 year olds who have parent permission. (Last year’s top donor in Richmond Beach, giving blood every eight weeks without fail, was a seventeen year old!)

Appointments for the Richmond Beach event, or for other dates or locations, can be made online following the prompts under “search blood drives.” The bloodmobile tends to be most crowded before noon and in the last hour.  Walk-ups are always welcome and encouraged.
