Early Morning Drain: March 10 Blood Drive to start at 9 am in Richmond Beach

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Only 100 pints and your name goes on the donor tree.
Start Saturday March 10 at Richmond Beach.

By Tom Petersen, Richmond Beach Blood Drive Coordinator

The Puget Sound Blood Center’s drives in Richmond Beach will start at 9 a.m. this year, beginning with the March 10 event. The bloodmobile will be at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

Many donors asked for an earlier start. The unit’s morning appointments have been booked solid, and walk-ups have kept the bloodmobile at capacity, so it is hoped that the new hours will relax the rush without turning away donors.

The drives will now end an hour earlier, at 3 p.m.

This year’s neighborhood theme is “Win Your Pin!” The PSBC awards a lapel pin commemorating each eight donations (one gallon). Richmond Beach far surpassed its 2011 goal of registering at least two new donors per event, and now it’s hoped that those people will strive for the next honor. Meanwhile, the neighborhood’s regular donors are all now working on their multi-gallon pins!

(Just so everyone knows, the world record is 315 donations.)

The Richmond Beach neighborhood record is 31 donors registered, and 29 pints drawn, at a single event. A blood drive in India in 2010 collected 25,065 pints in one day! Must have had a bigger bus . . .

Blood Drive In Richmond Beach Saturday

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

The Puget Sound Blood Center mobile unit will be at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, this Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Most healthy adults weighing at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate, if it's been 8 weeks since their last donation. This year the Richmond Beach blood drive has been trying to encourage first timers, and so far a dozen people have added themselves to the rolls of those who roll up their sleeves.

Donating blood takes just 45 minutes, from the tablet computer health questionnaire sign-in to the cookies and juice before you go. Walk-ins are always welcome, but the Richmond Beach events have grown so popular -- frequently filling the bloodmobile to capacity -- that appointments are advised. It's easy: go to the website or call 1-800-398-7888.

Puget Sound Blood Mobile in Lake Forest Park September 8

Saturday, September 3, 2011

The Blood Mobile will be at the Lower Level of the LFP Town Center, from 11am to 5pm (lunch break 1pm-2pm), on Thursday, September 8. No appointments are necessary and drop ins are welcome!

It takes 900 people, registering every weekday, to keep our community’s blood supply at stable levels. Summer activities sometimes prevent donors from making a visit to donate blood, but the need is always constant.

Each blood donation is a gift of life, potentially saving three lives. Blood donations not only help those who have suffered trauma, they also help cancer, surgery patients, premature babies and others who cannot live without the support of volunteer blood donors.

Donors must be 18 years of age, be in good health, and weigh over 110 pounds. Donating blood takes about an hour of your time. Please consider stopping by the Blood Mobile on Thursday and giving the gift of life.

Questions: Call Deb Milan, LFP City Hall, 206-368-5440,

Blood Drive in Richmond Beach this Saturday, July 2

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Come all you red-blooded Americans and roll up your sleeves this holiday weekend!

The Puget Sound Blood Center will be in Richmond Beach Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm taking donations. The Bloodmobile will be in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the intersection of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW.

Last year Richmond Beach hosted a weekend-of-the-Fourth drive, almost on a dare, and the response was terrific. The PSBC is delighted to be back! This year, the community’s goal is to register new donors, so seeing some new faces would be a great way to celebrate. Bring a friend!

Giving blood is a great thing to do for your community and country. Most adults over 110 pounds and in good health are eligible; people as young as 16 can also donate, with parental permission. Students who began their giving this year at Shorewood, Shorecrest, or at Shoreline Community College are encouraged to come keep the habit up by donating this summer.

Appointments can be made online or by calling 800-398-7888. Walk-ins are welcome and encouraged.

Richmond Beach Blood Drive calls for first timers to help set a new record

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Saving lives by giving blood.  Photo courtesy PSBC.
By Tom Petersen

This Saturday’s Puget Sound Blood Center event in Richmond Beach is aiming to break the record of 30 participants, set last year. The neighborhood goal is to increase the donor pool by encouraging first-time donors, so getting some “new blood” will help set a new mark.

Donations can be made between 10 am and 4 pm. The bloodmobile will be parked in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, and walk-ups are welcome, but with a large number of donors expected, appointments are encouraged.

Appointments can be made online or by calling 1-800-398-7888. Regular donors can refer a friend. Donors can sign up for e-mail reminders, which has been a very successful in getting people to make donating blood a habit.

Each pint of blood can be divided among as many as three patients. Thirty one donors could save nearly 100 lives – accident victims, people needing operations, and people with chronic illnesses. The May 7 event in Richmond Beach is on the leading edge of the summer season, when blood stocks are often depleted.

The Puget Sound Blood Center is also one of the nation’s leading blood research organizations, with samples being tested and examined to better understand and treat blood-related illnesses, communicable diseases, and general health.

Any adult (and youths over 16, with parental permission) is eligible to donate blood, as long as s/he weighs 110 pounds and is in good health. A visit to the bloodmobile takes about 45 minutes total, from interview to free snacks and juice.

Facts about blood donations

Thursday, August 19, 2010

When you sign up to donate blood - what happens to your blood?

According to Monette Anderson of the Puget Sound Blood Center, each pint of blood is separated into components (platelets, plasma and red blood cells) to save three lives.

From one person's donation of blood, PSBC can obtain red blood cells, which have a life span of 42 days, platelets, which have a life span of 2 days and plasma which has a life span of 1 year.

Only 5 percent of eligible donors actually give blood, despite the fact that 92 percent of us will need a blood transfusion if we live to the age of 72.

PSBC strives to maintain a four day supply of each blood type and support over 70 clinics in western Washington. Blood goes to treatment for anyone who has been injured or is receiving treatment for trauma and burns, cancer, blood and immune diseases, surgery, heart disease or organ or marrow transplant.

During the summer months PSBC had added difficulty meeting the goal of 900 donors a day. Student donations are 30% of the donor base so with high schools and colleges out, as well as many on vacations, they see a significant decrease.

Hemophiliacs usually need platelets as well as transfusions of red blood cells. They are often given platelets to help their clotting factors.

The Bloodmobile will be accepting donations in Richmond Beach on Saturday, August 28, at the Shoreline Fire Training Facility, Richmond Beach Road.  Appointments can be made at www.psbc.org or by calling 800-398-7888. Mid-day times (2:00 to 3:00 p.m.) are especially encouraged. Walk-ups are welcome.More info: Tom Petersen, 206-546-4865.

Blood, White, and Blue are the colors of In-De-Pints Day in Richmond Beach

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Robert Shannon and Deanna Zawaideh of D'z Barbershop, along with RB neighborhood blood drive coordinator Tom Petersen. D'z Barbershop sponsored 30 donors at the 2009 blood drive with their "Clip and Drip Special: Free Blood Donation with every haircut!"

Join the civic-minded makers of bad puns and good blood this Saturday, July 3, at the Richmond Beach Blood Drive. All are welcome to participate.

The Puget Sound Blood Center's Bloodmobile will be parked in front of the Shoreline Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW to take donations on what is always a critical weekend for blood.

People can give blood between 11 am - 1 pm or from 2 - 5 pm.

Giving blood is easy. Make an appointment on the website, find the nearest donor center, convenient blood drives, or just call 1-800-398-7888.

Regularly scheduled blood drives came to Richmond Beach three years ago, instigated by Aarene Storms, the Teen Librarian at the Richmond Beach Library. When the donation events could no longer fit in the library's busy schedule, the Shoreline Fire Department welcomed PSBC to park the bloodmobile at the Safety Center.

Since then, the Richmond Beach blood drive has become one of the most consistently successful neighborhood drives in the system, which is why PSBC is confident that the unusual step of holding an event on a holiday weekend will still bring out plenty of donors.

Blood drive at WSDOT Wednesday

Sunday, April 18, 2010

 By Jamie Holter, WSDOT

A blood drive reminds us that giving blood is a way to celebrate life. Every blood donor is a potential lifesaver. Every unit of “whole” blood collected is typically separated into blood’s components--platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate and red cells-- and can benefit up to three or more patients. By sharing your good health, you not only provide patients and their medical providers a vital tool to assist them with overcoming their medical problem, you also provide some peace of mind to the patients’ friends and families as they support the patient during their time of crisis.

The Puget Sound Blood Center relies solely on volunteer donations to meet the needs of patients in Western Washington. Every day, Puget Sound Blood Center needs to collect blood from 900 donors.

Thank you for taking the time to support our community through this blood drive.

* Wednesday, April 21, 8 am to 2 pm, closed for lunch 10-11 am

* WSDOT - Washington State Department of Transportation south parking lot, 15700 Dayton Ave N, Shoreline 98133 - look for the Puget Sound Blood Center bus.

* Make an appointment online at this website.

Give and/or help get others to do the same. Whether you’re eligible or not, you can help spread the word by copying the link to this message and sharing it, or inviting your co-workers and friends to take part or donate with you.  Blood drives provide blood for all the patients in hospitals in our community and therefore, they are a resource that belongs to everyone and everyone can take a role and pride in their success.
