Sunday, February 23, 2020

Mountains to Sound 30th anniversary trek
Full Trip: Saturday, July 11 – Sunday, July 19, 2020
Single day trips will also be available for those interested – more details coming soon.

Join us for a nine-day camping adventure of a lifetime where you will hike, bike, and float across the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area, from Roslyn to Seattle. This 1.5-million-acre landscape boasts stunning natural beauty, friendly communities, and a rich heritage story, and you’ll have a front-row seat to experience it all.

This year, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Trek, where the concept of establishing a Greenway along Interstate 90 was born, and citizens were inspired to thoughtfully shape our region’s growth.

Every five years, the community comes together to re-create this special event, and all are welcome to join in the celebration – whether you are a longtime Greenway supporter or have never heard of it before.

During this unique recreational opportunity, you will form new friendships and connections while learning about what makes this landscape so special and how we can all work together to champion its future.

Will you be there? Registration opens February 28th!

Sign up for Greenway News to stay in the know about the 2020 Trek as more details become available.

New law: drivers must be three feet from bicycles to pass

Monday, February 17, 2020

Drivers should be aware of a new law that went into effect on January 1, 2020 designed to reduce the number of collisions and risks for people who walk, use a wheelchair, or ride a bike along the roadways.

In state law a vulnerable road user is a pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist, or someone riding an animal.

The new requirements for drivers overtaking bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users are:
  • When there are two or more lanes in the same direction of travel, the driver must move left into the adjacent lane to pass, after making sure it's safe to do so.
  • When the driver has only one lane for traffic moving in the direction of travel,
    • the driver must move into the lane going in the opposite direction to pass, if it's safe to do so.
    • If not, they should pass when it's possible, moving at least three feet and slow down to a safe speed for passing relative to the speed of the individual being overtaken.

Installation of on-demand bike lockers at UW Station will be ready before Connect 2020 construction

Thursday, December 26, 2019

BikeLink card can be used nationwide

In recognition of the increased number of Sound Transit riders using bicycles as part of their trip, the agency is installing shared, on-demand bike lockers at Link stations.

The lockers are a first at the University of Washington Station, while new lockers at the SODO and Rainier Beach Stations will replace older ones and more than double the number of available spaces.

UW Station was built with 286 rack spaces. The installation will result in installation of 60 on-demand bike lockers at UW Station spaces and a total of 234 rack spaces.

The new bike lockers will be available by the hour on a first-come, first-served basis, in contrast to Sound Transit’s existing bike lockers, which are leased annually. Sound Transit has contracted with BikeLink to install and operate the lockers. The lockers will cost five cents per hour.

In order to use the lockers, riders will have to first purchase a BikeLink card. The card costs $20 and comes with $20 in credit. The card can be purchased online at the BikeLink website or by calling BikeLink at 1-888-540-0546.

Because it can take up to five days for the card to arrive by mail, riders who are interested in using the lockers are encouraged to contact BikeLink to ensure that they can use the lockers as soon as they open.

The BikeLink card also provides access to and payment for lockers at more than 350 locations nationwide. Sound Transit’s partners at King County Metro Transit have BikeLink lockers at 12 transit stations and plans to install more.

A FAQ about the new lockers is available on the Sound Transit website.

Connect 2020
The new lockers will be ready in time for Connect 2020, 10 weeks of construction that will reduce Link service beginning January 4.

During construction, Sound Transit is prohibiting bicycles at Pioneer Square Station.

Southbound riders with bicycles will exit at University Street, and northbound riders with bicycles will exit at International District/Chinatown.

People riding bicycles between University Street and International District/Chinatown stations can use protected bicycle lanes on Second Avenue, S Main Street, and Fifth Avenue S.

Seattle’s Yancey C. Blalock Freemason Lodge generously offered their “Bikes for Books” program to Lake Forest Park Elementary to encourage students to read books and lead a healthy, active life.

From February to June, K-6 students who met their teacher’s monthly reading goal entered a ticket into the “Bikes for Books” drawing. Students who went "above and beyond" their monthly goal received two tickets.

On the last day of the year, school librarian, Frank Kleyn, along with members of the Yancey C. Blalock lodge drew four names to win a bicycle and a gift certificate for a new helmet.

All Lake Forest Park students were inspired to read books and participate in the “Bikes for Books” program. Lake Forest Park staff and students thank the Yancey C. Blalock Freemason Lodge for encouraging our students to read books and ride bikes.

Shoreline named a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community

Sunday, December 9, 2018

Shoreline Councilmember Doris McConnell
The League of American Bicyclists recognized Shoreline with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award, joining 464 other bike friendly communities across the country.

With the announcement of 61 new and renewing BFCs today, Shoreline joins a leading group of communities in every state that are transforming the American landscape.

“We applaud these communities for making bicycling a safe and convenient option for transportation and recreation,” said Bill Nesper, Executive Director at the League of American Bicyclists.
“We are encouraged by the growing number of leaders who see bicycling as a way to build more vibrant, healthy, sustainable and connected communities and be a part of the solution to many complex challenges faced at both the community and national levels. We look forward to continuing to work with these communities as we move closer to our mission of creating a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.”

The BFC program helps communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability, and accessibility, while allowing them to benchmark progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. The Bronze BFC award recognizes Shoreline’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.

“We are honored to receive this national recognition for our work at developing a bicycle network throughout Shoreline that is safe and convenient for all riders,” stated Shoreline Mayor Will Hall.

Since the Bicycle Friendly Community program’s inception over 20 years ago, more than 800 distinct communities have applied for recognition. The program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community for communities of all shapes and sizes. The rigorous application process is an educational tool in itself and includes an opportunity for local bicyclists to provide input on their experiences and perceptions of bicycling in their community.

The League of American Bicyclists is leading the movement to create a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. As leaders, our commitment is to listen and learn, define standards and share best practices to engage diverse communities and build a powerful, unified voice for change.

Students creating app for safety on the Burke Gilman Trail

Sunday, November 25, 2018

Location of bicycle traffic safety experiment
Google maps

The Seattle Times reports on a student project designed to reduce bicycle - car collisions on the Burke Gilman Trail.

The UW team is installing sensors this month along the trail in Lake Forest Park, near the junction of Highway 522 and Ballinger Way Northeast, to test an app-based system that would alert drivers and cyclists if they are about to cross paths.

Focus of the experiment is the end of Ballinger Way where vehicles accessing the Civic Club and Beach Drive cross the Trail.

The UW team is installing three solar-powered sensors this month along the trail in Lake Forest Park, near the junction of Highway 522 and Ballinger Way Northeast. Each contains a module that detects Bluetooth-equipped devices nearby — so when a bicyclist’s phone comes within about 10 yards, its presence is relayed to nearby phones, vehicle navigation systems, and neighboring sensors.
To use the system, travelers would need to download and turn on the app.
