Bike Drive Saturday to benefit Bike Works

Tuesday, May 29, 2018

On Saturday June 2nd, the Shoreline Recology Store will host a bike drive benefitting Bike Works. They invite area residents to drop off their unwanted bicycles, bicycle parts and accessories.

For each bike that you donate, you will receive a raffle ticket for a basket of goodies, including two stainless steel Hydro flask water bottles, a solar power bank, and a variety of other eco-friendly products, valued at $200.

Where will your bicycle go? It could be refurbished by the Bike Works Recycle and Reuse Team to be sold in the Community Bike Shop in Columbia City at an affordable price.

It could be part of Bike Works’ youth or adult bike repair classes, where students learn to overhaul bikes. Or it could be fixed up by one of our regular volunteers. Afterwards, Bike Works staff inspect each bike before giving it away to community members with limited resources.

Watch this video to find out more about Bike Works bikes.

Drop off your bike at the Recology Store Shoreline on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 11am to 2pm, 15235 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

How to improve safe access for people walking
and cycling to Town Center
The final Safe Streets report was adopted by the Lake Forest Park City Council on July 27, 2017, and is available on the project website.
In November, the Council approved an additional phase of the project—assessing ways to improve safe access for people walking and cycling to the Town Center and waterfront amenities.
This new phase is focused on areas within a half-mile of the Town Center; or, roughly, a ten-minute walk.

For this portion of the project, an interactive web map has been set up that allows you to directly give us your ideas. The web map, available online, will be live until January 31, 2018.

We encourage you to visit the website, enter your ideas on the map, and vote on your neighbors’ ideas. Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors. Your input is needed!

Pancake breakfast kicks off the Kitsap Color Classic bicycle ride

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

The Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group hosts its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser, 7-9:30am on Sunday, September 24, at the Edmonds Masonic Center located at 515 Dayton Street.

The hearty, all-you-can-eat, breakfast features pancakes, sausages, eggs, fruit, juice and coffee for $7.

The annual event kicks off the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Kitsap Color Classic ride starting from the same location as the breakfast. Riders may choose from 25-, 39- and 57-mile route options on the Kitsap Peninsula. More ride information here.

“The tradition of an Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group pancake breakfast began 20 years ago as a way for cyclists to fuel up for one of the most popular fall rides in this area,” said Janice Corbett co-organizer for the event.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year. The profits from the breakfast, and donations collected at the event, support bicycling in South Snohomish County. Previously, funds raised paid for new bicycle racks throughout Edmonds and bicycles for children.”

The group also partners with local city governments, non-profit organizations and the Edmonds School District.

Community events include kid’s bike rodeos at area events such as the City of Edmonds Health and Fitness Expo in May, Bike to School Day, and the “Lets Go” bicycling education program in Edmonds School District physical education classes.

Thousands of students have completed the instructional and hands-on program to learn safe bicycling practices.

Volunteers still needed for 2017 bicycle / pedestrian count on Sept. 26-28

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

One...
The state is kicking off a three-day survey to count the number of people who walk or bike to their destination – and there’s still time to help.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help count can register and download tally forms online. Volunteer spots are open statewide, especially in some of the participating small communities.

For this 10th annual survey, the Washington State Department of Transportation and Cascade Bicycle Club are partnering with cities and counties to help count the number of people biking and walking Tuesday, Sept. 26, through Thursday, Sept. 28.

These short-term counts allow WSDOT and its partners to measure success and continue to work towards safe, connected and convenient bike and pedestrian networks all over the state. The surveys rely on the hundreds of volunteers who participate each year. In 2016, volunteers tallied more than 78,000 people biking and walking in communities across Washington.

"Volunteers are vital to our annual bike and pedestrian count," said Cascade Bike Club Executive Director Richard Smith. “These counts provide essential data to help us improve people’s lives."

Data collected in the count is used by state and local agencies to estimate demand; measure the benefit of bicycle and pedestrian project investments; and improve policies, project designs and funding opportunities.

To learn more, visit WSDOT’s website, email Cascade Bicycle Club or call 206-954-4896.

Trail safety - simple rules to stay safe on our trails

Saturday, August 26, 2017

Text and photo from King County Parks

Follow these simple rules to stay safe on trails:
  • Stay right, pass left - Be aware of your surroundings at all times and follow the rules of the road to keep everyone safe.
  • Leave room for others to pass - Whether walking or biking, always leave enough room for others to get around your person or group. Don't hog the trail!
  • Use your voice or bell to let others know you're coming - No one likes to be surprised by someone coming up behind them. Let other know you're coming - before you arrive.
  • Go slow when passing, no sneaking - Reduce your speed when passing for everyone's safety.
  • Be visible, wear reflective gear or lights in low light - Make sure you're always easy to see from all sides.
  • Keep pets close for their safety and others- Retractable leashes can easily become a hazard on busy trails. Keep dogs (and cats) safe when on leash.
  • Most of all, obey posted speed limits of 15 mph when biking.

But most of all, use common sense, and be a good trail neighbor. Go slow around others.

It's up to all of us to keep our trails safe.

State seeks volunteers to count people who bike and walk

Monday, August 14, 2017

Bicycle and pedestrian
annual count September 26-28

The number of people who choose to walk or ride bicycles as their mode of transportation is increasing in Washington each year.

Just how many? Here is an opportunity to help the state find out. Volunteer registration is now open for anyone who wants to help count the number of people who walk or ride bicycles to their destinations during a three-day survey starting Tuesday, September 26.

Volunteer support is vital to the success of this project, and about 400 people are needed for the count. In 2016, volunteers tallied more than 78,000 people biking and walking in communities across Washington.

For this ninth annual survey, the Washington State Department of Transportation and Cascade Bicycle Club are partnering with FeetFirst, Washington Bikes and Futurewise to help count the number of people bicycling and walking Tuesday, September 26 through Thursday, September 28.

“Data from this survey help state and local governments plan and evaluate improved connections for Washingtonians who walk and bike, in a similar way we plan for other modes of travel,” said Active Transportation Division Director Barb Chamberlain. “Volunteers make the collection process possible – we couldn’t do this work without them.”

This volunteer effort makes sure that people who bike and walk are counted as essential users of the transportation system. Data collected during the count is used by state and local agencies to estimate demand; measure the benefit of bicycle and pedestrian project investments; and improve policies, project designs and funding opportunities.

In addition to the annual count, WSDOT, Cascade Bicycle Club, and local agencies are partnering to install permanent counters at locations around the state. To see data from both data collection programs, visit the WSDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Portal.

New bike lanes on 1st NE connect to east - west trail

Sunday, July 30, 2017

As part of the Bike Plan Implementation, new bike lanes have been created on 1st Ave NE from NE 185th to NE 195th.

NE 195th is the east-west bike trail which runs from Meridian Ave N to 5th Ave NE and transitions to the pedestrian bridge over I-5.

The bike lanes remove all the on-street parking in front of the Shoreline Conference Center and the Shoreline Pool. The off-street nose-in parking in front of the tennis courts and Shoreline Park remain.

The Shoreline Center is notifying customers about the parking revision but has not yet suggested alternative parking.

Sharrows on NW 195th Street

Sunday, July 23, 2017

Sharrow on NW 195th
The City of Shoreline is close to completion of the Bike Plan Implementation Project, painting lane markers to indicate bicycle pathways on city streets.

Some streets are getting major changes, such as 5th NE and 1st NE, as vehicle parking is eliminated to create dedicated bicycle lanes.

Others, like NW 195th, are not being "rechannelized" but are being painted with "sharrows."

A sharrow is a painted symbol with two chevrons and a bicycle. It is painted in the middle of a street used by vehicles to indicate that bicyclists will also being traveling this route.

They are placed in the center of the road as that is the location on the roadway that is outside of the vehicle wheel path and is visible to the driver.

Keeping the sharrow markings in the center of the road and outside of the wheel paths of vehicles lengthens their life as they are less likely to be worn off by vehicle tires.

NW 195th received sharrow markings and a refresh to the existing paint lines along with some wayfinding signage.

According to Capital Projects Manager John Ricardi, a sharrow:
  • Alerts motor vehicle drivers to the potential presence of bicyclists.
  • Advertises the presence of bikeway routes to all users.
  • Provides a wayfinding element along bike routes
  • Requires no additional street space
  • Reduces the incidence of wrong-way bicycling

Public meeting about bike lanes on 5th NE

Saturday, July 22, 2017

Residents of Ridgecrest have expressed concerns to the City about the configuration of the new lane striping on 5th NE and how the project was implemented.

The new striping on 5th Ave NE from NE 155th St to NE 175th St has bike lanes on each side of the street and removes parking for vehicles on one side of the street.

The City will hold a public open house on the topic this coming Wednesday, July 26 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Spartan Rec Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, 98155, between the Shoreline Stadium and the Shoreline Conference Center.

Staff will be available to answer questions and talk to attendees about the project.

Bike lanes coming to Dayton Ave N

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

In 2008, the City of Shoreline completed the Interurban Trail that runs north and south through the City.

While this provides a valuable connection for users traveling north / south through Shoreline, it is missing connections to local neighborhoods, parks, city amenities and schools.

The Bike Plan Implementation project will complete the majority of the City of Shoreline’s adopted Bicycle System Plan and Wayfinding Program.

What is happening to Dayton Ave N?

The project will install continuous bike lanes along the corridor. This will be accomplished by installing new markings between Westminster Way N and Carlyle Hall Rd N.

What will construction look like?

Construction impacts include, but are not limited to:
  • Disturbances to landscaping and paving within the right-of-way
  • Temporary loss of two-way traffic (all work to be completed between the hours of 9am-3pm)
  • Parking impacts
Construction is currently scheduled to begin mid-July.

For more information see project website
