LFP Elementary students won bikes in a drawing
after completing a reading program

Seattle’s Yancey C. Blalock Freemason Lodge generously offered their “Bikes for Books” program to Lake Forest Park Elementary to encourage students to read books and lead a healthy, active life.

From February to June, K-6 students who met their teacher’s monthly reading goal entered a ticket into the “Bikes for Books” drawing.

On the last day of school, teacher-librarian, Frank Kleyn, along with members of the Yancey C. Blalock lodge, drew four names to win bicycles and gift cards for new helmets.

All Lake Forest Park students were inspired to read books and participate in the “Bikes for Books” program.

Our staff and students thank the Yancey C. Blalock Freemason Lodge for encouraging our students to read books and ride bikes. Thank you!

Bicyclist looking for Good Samaritan "Barry" who rescued him after accident

Monday, March 20, 2017

Dru has almost fully recovered and wants to thank his Good Samaritan
Photo taken by Dru's physical therapist at Motus

By Dru Druzianich

Two months ago on December 21, I crashed my bicycle on the Interurban Trail, somewhere around N 180th and Midvale.

A good samaritan named Barry (he will forever be known to me as Clarence) saw my crash, helped me up, loaded me and my bike into his car and drove me to my apartment in Mountlake Terrace.

He then carried my bicycle up two flights of stairs to my home and offered to give me a ride to the emergency room at Swedish Edmonds. By that time I knew I could drive myself to the ER, so we said goodbye.

I did not get his last name as I was in a state of shock and have no way of contacting him to give him an update on my recovery and buy him lunch.

If you know Barry, please contact the Shoreline Area News.

Community provides feedback on Bike Plan Implementation Project

Sunday, November 13, 2016

On October 18, the City held an open house for the Bike Plan Implementation project. Approximately 35 people, ranging from high school students to seniors, attended, providing feedback on the project proposals. The primary feedback was:
  • Concern about parking removal associated with the proposed bike lanes on 25th Ave NE in front of Kellogg Middle School, and Shorecrest High School
  • Wanting bike facilities/ a road diet on Richmond Beach Road west of 8th Ave NW
  • Wanting better separation for bicyclist along the major east-west routes (185th, 155th, 175th, 145th)

As a result of the feedback and further analysis, bike lanes for 25th Ave NE will not be implemented as part of the current Bike Plan Implementation Project.

Instead, the City will implement bike facilities on 5th Ave NE from NE 155th St to NE 175th and on 8th Ave from NW 195th St to NW 205th St as outlined in the City of Shoreline’s 2011 Transportation Master Plan and the 2014 Bike Master plan.

The decision to remove the planned bike lanes on 25th Ave NE from the current project does not mean 25th Ave NE will not receive bike lanes in the future.

According to Public Works staff, "We have heard the public’s concerns and we will take more time to analyze 25th Ave NE to determine if there is a solution that would adequately address the public’s concerns as we work together to build out Shoreline’s Transportation Master Plan.

Volunteers still needed for 2016 count September 27-29

Next week, the state will kick off a three day-survey to count the number of people who walk or ride bicycles to their destinations. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help in the count can still register and download tally forms online. Volunteer spots are open statewide, especially in some of the participating small communities.

For this ninth annual survey, the Washington State Department of Transportation and Cascade Bicycle Club are partnering with cities and counties to help count the number of people bicycling and walking Tuesday, September 27, through Thursday, September 29.

Volunteer support is vital to the success of this project. In 2015 volunteers tallied more than 74,000 bicyclists and pedestrians in communities across Washington.

Data collected in the count is used by state and local agencies to estimate demand; measure the benefit of bicycle and pedestrian project investments; and improve policies, project designs and funding opportunities.

To learn more, visit WSDOT’s website, email Cascade Bicycle Club or call 206-954-4896.

Annual STP bike riders hitting the roads July 16-17

Saturday, July 16, 2016

10,000 cyclists will ride western Washington’s state highways and local roads for the 2016 Group Health / Alaska Airlines Seattle to Portland (STP) fundraiser ride.

WSDOT warns that major traffic congestion will occur in areas from Kent to Portland. They ask drivers to share the road and prepare for travel delays during the popular event. WSDOT also reminds bicyclists of their responsibility to follow Washington’s rules of the road.

A Shoreline team, including local business owners Lindsey Willis (Vanity Salon) and her father Steve Erickson (Easy Monkey Taphouse), are riding to raise money for Pinky's Passion for a Parkinson's Cure.

Pat "Pinky" Erickson  has been raising funds for Parkinson's research since Pat was diagnosed 15 years ago, donating primarily to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

If you would like to donate, go to Ridewithpassion.org and sponsor Lindsey, Steve, or one of the other riders.

Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace launch regional bike network

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

According to My Edmonds News, the cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace are launching Bike2Health, a collaborative effort to complete 11 critical missing links of the existing regional bicycle network in south Snohomish County (see map).

Funded by a $1.9 million grant from the Verdant Health Commission, the project will improve access to health and wellness choices, make bicycling safer and increase the region’s connectivity. Project design kicks off this month, with construction scheduled to begin in 2016.

Collectively the cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace have completed 23 miles of bicycle network over the past decade; however, much of this construction has been done separately by each city, which has resulted in a segmented bicycle network. This segmentation is one reason cited by residents for choosing to use other methods of travel.

Once complete, Bike2Health will create a regional bicycle network establishing several key north/south and east/west corridors and connecting major destinations (e.g. colleges, civic centers, employment centers, the Interurban Trail, etc.) and transit locations such as Swift bus rapid transit stations, transit centers and the Edmonds Ferry. In total, roughly ten miles of bicycle network will be completed or connected by installing shared lane markings, bicycle route signage and about six miles of new bicycle lanes.

Call for volunteers: Help count Washington’s cyclists and walkers this fall

Monday, August 3, 2015

More than 72,000 bicyclists and pedestrians were counted by volunteers across Washington during a three-day survey in 2014. As another survey cycle nears, about 400 volunteers will again be needed this fall to count the number of people who ride bike or walk to their destinations. Volunteer registration is starting now.

“Counting bicyclists and pedestrians helps us more accurately measure demand, gauge the results of our investments and plan for future improvement projects,” said Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson. “We couldn’t document the number of people walking and biking without the help of many volunteers from across the state.”

For this eighth annual survey, the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Cascade Bicycle Club are enlisting volunteers and organizations like FeetFirst and the Bicycle Alliance of Washington to help count the number of people bicycling and walking on paths, bike lanes, sidewalks, and other facilities Tuesday, Sept. 29, through Thursday, Oct. 1. Counts will be taken in a least 38 cities throughout the state.

Those interested in helping can learn more by visiting WSDOT’s survey website, or by contacting Cascade Bicycle Club or calling 206-861-9890.

WSDOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club are asking volunteers from across the state to perform the counts in participating cities including Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

WSDOT’s count is part of the National Documentation Project, an annual bicycle and pedestrian count and survey effort that is sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers Pedestrian and Bicycle Council. The count will also help measure WSDOT’s progress toward the goal of increasing bicycling and walking while reducing the number of vehicle miles driven.

Call for volunteers: Help tally Washington’s cyclists and walkers this fall

Monday, August 18, 2014

One, two...
Preparations underway for 2014 bicycle, pedestrian count Sept. 30–Oct. 2

During a three-day survey last year, volunteers counted nearly 66,000 bicyclists and pedestrians across Washington. As another survey cycle approaches, about 400 volunteers will be called upon again this fall to tally the number of people who ride a bike or walk to their destinations.

“As an avid cyclist, I have an appreciation for the many volunteers who help with this annual count,” said Washington State Department of Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson. “Knowing where people are and how they are using the transportation system helps us measure the results of bike and sidewalk investments and plan for future projects.”

For the seventh annual survey, WSDOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club are enlisting volunteers and organizations such as Feet First and Washington Bikes to help count the people they see bicycling and walking along paths, bike lanes, sidewalks and other facilities Tuesday, Sept. 30, through Thursday, Oct. 2. Counts will be taken at assigned locations in nearly 40 cities throughout the state.

WSDOT’s count is part of the National Documentation Project, an annual bicycle and pedestrian count and survey effort sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers Pedestrian and Bicycle Council. The count will also help measure WSDOT’s progress toward its goal of increasing bicycling and walking while reducing the number of vehicle miles driven.

7-year reign: Washington retains its title as nation’s most ‘Bicycle-Friendly State’

Thursday, May 1, 2014

For the seventh consecutive year, Washington has been named the nation’s No. 1 “Bicycle-Friendly State” by the League of American Bicyclists.

Meanwhile, Washington state will officially celebrate Bike Month in May with a signed proclamation by Governor Jay Inslee describing the many benefits of bicycling.

“As a bike rider I get to see firsthand all that Washington has done to make bicycling part of a sustainable transportation system,” said Gov. Inslee. “Bicycling helps make healthy communities, healthy people and a rich quality of life.  There’s always more to do, but being named the most bike friendly state shows we are moving on the right path.”

Strong partnerships among the state’s cities, counties, advocacy organizations, state agencies and transportation providers form the foundation of Washington’s success in improving conditions for bicycling and walking.

“Being an avid bicyclist, I’ve had an opportunity to explore Washington’s urban and rural roadways this past year,” said Washington Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson. “We’ll continue to work with our local partners to identify and fund bicycle needs in their areas, especially on highways that also function as main streets in our communities.”

The Washington State Department of Transportation supports bicycling through its Bicycle and Pedestrian programs and provides transportation design guidance, grant programs and technical support.

“We’re pleased and proud that Washington has remained the number one bicycle-friendly state,” said Barb Chamberlain, Washington Bikes executive director. “The work that goes into growing bicycling statewide every year is important for everyday people bicycling to work, school or errands. It’s equally important for Washington’s reputation as an incredible place to experience the great outdoors through bike travel and tourism. What a great way to kick off Bike Month!”

The League of American Bicyclists annually ranks all 50 states on how “bikeable” they are. The League evaluates each state’s cycling success in several categories: legislation and enforcement; policies and programs; infrastructure and funding; education and encouragement; and evaluation and planning.
