Cabin fever? A few places are open

Sunday, February 10, 2019

First it was alarming. How would you get to work? Were the schools open? Did you have enough food?

Then it was amazing and beautiful. Every tree looked like a Christmas card. Houses and streets looked like subjects for jigsaw puzzles.

Then it was fun. Saturday. A clear day. Hills to slide down. Snow figures and forts. Snowball fights.

Now you'd just really like to get out of the house.

Here are some possibilities. As always, call before you go.

  • The Local 104 on Ballinger at 35th - food and beer / wine - 206-309-4104. They closed at 9pm on Friday and closed Saturday so staff could travel safely.
  • Lake Forest Bar and Grill - Town Center LFP - Ballinger entrance - complete menu - 206-364-1261. They seem to be staying open normal hours.
  • Third Place Commons - Town Center LFP - they're down to two restaurants - Honey Bear and Burney Brothers - but there are other places to eat in Town Center like Mod Pizza, Everest Kitchen. Call first. 206-366-3302
  • Ridgecrest Public House - 5th NE and NE 165th - bring your own food - beer on tap, games, good company - 206-823-7792. Owners live within walking distance so it has been staying open.
  • The Cabin Tavern - 19322 Richmond Beach Dr NW - 206-542-1177. No idea if they are staying open. They just seem like the kind of place that would be open.

Any other neighborhood hangouts that are staying open in spite of snow?

The Local 104 opens in the heart of Lake Forest Park

Sunday, December 2, 2018

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Newly opened in Lake Forest Park, The Local 104 is a place for neighbors and friends to meet, eat and unwind.

Located on the NE corner of the intersection of 35th Avenue NE and Ballinger Way NE (WA 104), The Local 104 was the inspiration of a group of locals who wanted a place to share community.

A variety of drinks and pastries

It was born from a series of conversations over beers about the need for a Lake Forest Park neighborhood spot.

A friendly neighborhood spot

The former Lake Forest Park Mini Mart presented the perfect opportunity to embark on this project.

Co-Owners/Chefs Tony Vujovich and Margaret Edwins (former Chef/Owner of 611 Supreme) both native to the Seattle area, have created a menu focused on regional food in a family friendly setting.

Wood fired pizza oven

The menu, centered around a wood fired oven built in Bellingham, includes pizza, mussels, oysters and more.

The Local 104 features 30 taps with local beer, wine and ciders. There is a retail area dedicated to beer, wine, pantry items, with more on the way.

A commercial kitchen leaves room for expansion

Open Wednesday through Sundays. 4pm-10pm. Extended hours to come.

Monka Brewing Company makes its mark on Shoreline

Friday, August 3, 2018

Devin Walker and Trez McBean in the public area
of their new brewery in North City

Text and photos by Luanne Brown

Shoreline area residents Devin Walker and Trez McBean recently opened up Monka Brewing Company at 17211 15th Ave NE in Shoreline.

Right across from the Safeway, long-time area folks will recognize it as the previous location of the Spay and Neuter Clinic. But McBean said that prior to that incarnation, it was a doughnut shop.

Master brewer at work
She points out the geometric angles of the wood-lined ceiling and the retro-globe lights as proof.

“We just loved the architecture of the place,” she said and is confident that the strong image of their new logo and décor will take root in the community’s mindset so that over time references to past occupants will be replaced by the happy memories made over a glass of craft beer and friendly conversation.

Walker is the master brewer of the Monka team and the new location is a dream come true for him.

An inventor with several patents to his name, Walker most recently comes from the world of commercial research and development for the coffee industry. Now instead of talking about solenoid cells, he’s the brains — and brawn — behind brewing three barrels (93 gallons) of beer per week.

Hot liquor tank
The process goes something like this: He starts with hot water, which is mixed with crushed grain (malted barley). He lets the mixture steep, then extracts the sugar water to the boil kettle and boils it for 1 to 1.5 hours.

He adds hops during the boil and cools the liquid quickly during its transfer to the fermenter.

He adds some yeast and ferments the brew for 5-15 days.

Fermenter tanks

Walker said he likes to experiment with his recipes and techniques.

“He’s also a risk-taker,” McBean said.
“He has no problem putting something down the drain if it’s not up to his high standards.”

While Walker takes care of the backroom brewing, McBean handles the front of the house.

“We really want this to be a family-friendly place where neighbors can meet over a small-batch brew.

Family-friendly place where neighbors can meet
over a small-batch brew

"People are welcome to bring their own food and we have board games, foosball, and air-football that people can play if they choose. But no TVs! We want to be a place where people can sit across from each other, eye-to-eye and reconnect.”

McBean, a dancer by profession, said that this is her chance to support her husband’s dream.

“He’s encouraged me to follow my passion for performing. Now it’s my turn to support him.”

“Monka” comes from the name that Sayler, Trez' niece, called McBean’s mother, Teresa McGee, who passed away last year.

“This brewery is dedicated to her memory. She was someone who listened in love. She was curious about people’s passions and was supportive of everyone she knew. When I’m with customers, I use her example as my inspiration,” McBean said.

For now, Walker is experimenting with rotating brews. “I want to get a feel for what the community is looking for in a beer,” he said. In addition to serving whatever is on tap, there are also soft-drinks, gluten-free apple cider, bottled water, and snacks.

They are also talking about rotating food trucks on Sundays when the restaurant next door is closed.

“We want to be good neighbors to Ichi Bento. Customers are welcome to order from them or anywhere else and bring food in here to enjoy with their drinks,” said McBean.

LFP residents Jim and Lisa Bryant appreciate a
neighborhood brewery within walking distance.

According to Lake Forest Park residents Jim and Lisa Bryant, Monka’s IPA (India Pale Ale) is great.

“It’s also wonderful to have a neighborhood brewery within walking distance,” said Jim Bryant, who was impressed with McBean’s friendly counter service and conversation on their first visit. “We will be back,” said Lisa Bryant.

The brewery is across from the North City Safeway
The brewery is located at 17211 15th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.

  • Wed - Sat 2pm to 9pm
  • Sun - 2pm to 8pm

Hemlock State Brewing Company "Hibeernation Party" at Ridgecrest Public House Tuesday July 31 at 8 pm

Tuesday, July 31, 2018

By Megan Korgut

Join us this Tuesday July 31, 2018 at 8pm at Ridgecrest Public House, when we tap the last keg of beer from the first location of Shoreline's first brewery, Hemlock State Brewing Company.

Ridgecrest Public House, 520 NE 165th, Shoreline 98155.

Ridgecrest Pub and Hemlock State Brewing opened their doors in Shoreline on November 2015, and Hemlock State Brewing sold their first keg of beer to Ridgecrest Pub. So it's quite appropriate that the last keg of beer made at their first location also be at Ridgecrest Pub.

Hemlock State Brewing has been brewing their beer every Tuesday. But they recently started their "Hibeernation" while they focus on their future expansion nearby.

Since they aren't brewing this Tuesday, they will be on hand to pour you some of their Ryes over Run Belgian Rye IPA instead.

Hemlock State Brewing has been on tap at Ridgecrest Pub whenever possible. Both businesses have been sharing advice and information frequently as they evolve. This will all continue!

The one thing that will not continue is the Tuesday night pub runs to the old brewery location. We'll do one last run to their brewery this Tuesday, leaving the pub at 6.30pm as usual. All paces welcome. This run is optional, but there will be a little surprise incentive at the brewery.

Coming in August - the 4-Corners BrewFest

Thursday, July 12, 2018

2017 Brewfest

2018 will mark the 8th year of the 4-Corners BrewFest. Can you believe it?

Haven't been yet?? Make this your year!!

The 4-Corners BrewFest is popular enough to feel like a festival, but local and intimate. If you love experiencing new brewers and having a great time in the process, this is where you need to be.

A BrewFest ticket is not just your opportunity to experience new beers or to revel in your favorites.

Your ticket includes 12 5-oz tastes of whatever strikes your fancy, enough food to qualify as dinner, live music, and the chance to rub elbows with other people with excellent taste.

Your ticket also benefits a charity; this year's cause is suicide prevention, and Forefront in Shoreline Schools is our charity of choice. Proceeds from the 2018 BrewFest will be split between the four sponsoring neighborhoods and Forefront in Shoreline Schools.

So... what do you bring?
  • Your ID. Yep, EVERYONE gets carded, even if you have grey hair and are married to our mom.
  • Your wallet. Just kidding, you can leave that at home (except for that ID and possibly one credit card... see below). The ticket is all-inclusive, so you won't need a fat wallet.
  • Your friends. Your neighbors. Your out-of-town guests. Your favorite beer-lover.
What do you leave at home?
  • Your wallet (see above). You cannot purchase extra tastes (an insurance thing), so cash will just take up room in your pocket.
  • Your kids. This is a 21+ event, so even babes-in-arms cannot attend. Even if they love good craft brews.
  • Your dogs. It gets pretty crowded out there, and often a little hot too, so please leave the happy pups at home.
  • Your favorite stein. Yeah, we have tasting glasses. You won't get served in a 60-oz mug.
What else...?

We are thrilled to once again have Mike Brown Events bring a silent auction to this event! Last year, attendees were able to bid on such items as a Russell Wilson autographed football, a Steve Largent autographed jersey, a Nelson Cruz autographed baseball, a Sting autographed guitar, and much more. He will take credit cards, cash, or a check made out to the charity (proceeds for the auction part will go directly to Forefront in Shoreline Schools).

Sound good? Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. We offer a limited number of designated driver tickets for $20, and tickets are on sale both online and at Beach House Greetings.

Want to volunteer? Many hands make light work! Click this link to see our Sign Up on SignUp.com

Find the BrewFest page here, and check back often as our list of brewers grows!

We hope to see you on Saturday, August 11!!

Liam Graham

In this modern age of constant sensory overload we all need an anchor to re-center ourselves, for me it is art and music, consuming one while creating the other.

I’d describes my art as an emotional spectrum, I create to feel, and because I feel. Some of my favourite pieces have come from my worst times, and some of my least favourite pieces have helped to draw others out of theirs, leading me to realise that mainstream ideals of “good art” are as much a part of the noise as anything else, what is important is the emotional response, whatever it may be, specific to every person to view a piece.

Photography Copyright Liam Graham

In some of my pieces I attempt to reflect an image, something I appreciate through the chaos of our modern lives. Excessive noise and distortion can sometimes more clearly define the subject of my photo, a paradox that could probably be made to mean something deep.

I left Seattle for 14 years at the end of the ‘90’s. The iconic Seattle grunge culture was something I always missed and can certainly say left its mark on my lifestyle, and it comes through in some of my photos as well. Variety and experimentation have always been important to me, so of course I don’t limit myself to one style. Straightforward photography has its own place in my galleries.

Photography Copyright Liam Graham

For my edited photos I use an array of worktools all on my iphone though I am now expanding into more film and digital photography, which will mean I am going to be using my computer for more in-depth work.

Brigid's Bottleshop

Hosting 18 taps with 16 beers and 2 ciders as well as wine by the glass, plus 100’s of bottles to-go, Brigids Bottleshop harbors a great relaxed atmosphere to imbibe in a new brew and peruse the work of local artists.

Offering outdoor seating on their patio for the sunnier days, a full gallery-ready wall and a friendly pet pet-friendly environment, along with growler refills at any of their 18 taps, Brigid’s is a multi-faceted hub for beer and art enthusiasts alike.
