Basketball: Shorewood girls hoops in San Diego for holiday tournament

Friday, December 27, 2019

Coach Mark Haner talks things over during a timeout
SAN Sports Desk photo

When you’ve got a basketball roster full of high-achieving girls in the classroom, it’s not surprising when they put their collective noodles together and decide to mix business with pleasure on a trip down to sunny San Diego, “America’s Finest City,” over the holidays.

And that’s exactly what Shorewood Head Coach Mark Haner’s girls did.

“Last year the SW boys team took a similar holiday trip to Arizona to play in a tournament,” Haner said after his team was trounced by Alameda (CA) at Scripps Ranch HS Friday afternoon, December 27, 2019.
"Realizing such a dream trip was a possibility for them, our team put plans in motion to make it happen, starting back in April.”
“We’ve got a couple 4.0s (GPA), a couple 3.7s, and some 3.5s. This trip is a reward for their classroom dedication as well as the leadership they demonstrate on campus,” he said.
“And who doesn’t want to enjoy sunny weather with temperatures at least 20 degrees warmer than back home this time of the year?"

The team will play three games in four days, taking Sunday off, before heading home the morning of New Year's Eve. They went to the San Diego Zoo Thursday, with a beach hike and pool time planned, as well as a trip up to Disneyland, in the days ahead.

On the court, the good news for the T-Birds is that all eight girls who suited up scored against the aggressive, swarming Hornets from up in the Bay Area.

“We knew coming in that we were likely going to be over-matched, and that was the case today.
But we’re learning how to respond to pressure defenses and we believe this will benefit us in the long run when we resume play in WESCO after the break."

Basketball: Shorecrest girls claw their way to a 2-0 victory over Juanita

Coaching at half-time

The Shorecrest girls varsity basketball team (2-0) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Juanita Rebels 47-39 on Wednesday night, December 4, 2019.

The game was scrappy, and back-and-forth game through the first half, with Juanita leading 26-25 at the first half. It remained tight in the third, until Shorecrest pulled ahead for good, winning the 4th quarter, 10-6.

For the second night in a row, Shorecrest spread the scoring, with three players in double digits. Senior Sydney VanNess and Junior Kiana Lino both had double-doubles, with 10 points/11 rebounds, and 13 points/13 rebounds respectively.

VanNess got the crowd on its feet with a blocked shot on the baseline to start the game, and the intensity continued from there with the first quarter ending 14-10.

Juanita took the lead in the 2nd quarter until a steal and layup from senior Taylor Svenson kept them in the game. Shorecrest’s strong rebounds and tight defense kept them in the lead.

The Scots struggled in the 3rd quarter, but with the game tied at 30, senior Amanda Lee hit her first of three three-pointers in the quarter to give them the lead they would never give up. Lee’s offense was matched with Senior Maura “Mo” Weaver’s amazing defense, including three steals.

Earlier in the evening, the Shorecrest JV team (2-0) won 42-28, and the C team (2-0) won 44-17.

Shorecrest travels to Redmond at Redmond High School on Monday, December 9th. 7:15pm start.

The Shorecrest varsity girl’s basketball team (1-0) defeated the Jackson Timberwolves (0-1) in their season opener on Tuesday night, December 3, 2019, 54-29.

Third year coach Carlos Humphrey returns with a balanced and experienced team, featuring four returning seniors in Amanda Lee, Taylor Svendsen, Sydney VanNess, and Maura Weaver, along with three juniors, and three sophomores.

Returning junior, Kiana Lino, opened the game with a tip to Lee, who passed to VanNess for a layup and the first points of the season. Lee would end the game with six assists and 10 points.

Shorecrest opened the game with a tight press defense, and ended the first quarter 12-6, led by sophomore Leila Hosn’s electric six first quarter points.

Shorecrest struggled in the second quarter, getting outscored 14-10, as Jackson staged a bit of a comeback to end the half down 22-20. But they came back strong in the second half, shutting out Jackson for the first 11 minutes of the half.

The fourth quarter started with a fake and a layup by Weaver that excited the crowd and ended with three straight layups by Hosn, who ended the game as she started it.

Hosn ended the game with 16 points, and VanNess and Lino each pitched in 10 and 9, respectively.

The Shorecrest JV team also won 45-18, and their C team, playing an away game at Mountlake Terrace, won 51-20.

Shorecrest takes on Juanita at Shorecrest High School Wednesday night at 7:15pm.

Keeping up with Shorecrest girls' basketball

Shorecrest v Snohomish
Friday 2-15-19 @Shorecrest, 7pm

Bracket 3A girls' tournament

For all of you trying to resume your normal lives following the recent run of frigid weather and icy road conditions, Friday night offers a perfect opportunity to get out of the house, join with other members of your community (including any young hoopsters living under your own roof), and watch two of the finest girls basketball teams around square off.

Shorecrest hosts Snohomish at 7pm Friday night, February 15, 2019 in the Northwest District 3A semi-finals. The winner is guaranteed a berth at next week’s Regionals.
This game is a rematch of a barn-burner the two teams played on December 18, won 48-45 by the Scots on a three-point buzzer-beater by Sydney VanNess.

Both teams finished league play with 11-2 marks. Snohomish is 13-7 overall, while the Scots record of 18-2 for the season is the best in school history.

The Scots are led by senior post player Audrey Dietz, and juniors Amanda Lee and VanNess. Scrappy senior Amanda Kagarabi bolsters SC’s tenacious defense, and she is the emotional leader of the team.

A key matchup to watch will be down low, between Dietz and the Panthers’ Kaylin Beckman.

Shorecrest defeated Stanwood in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday, 59-42. The Scots had to shake off some early rust, following the long break between games due to the weather, as they led by only a 24-20 margin at the half. But a 22-7 third quarter gave the team breathing room and afforded second year Head Coach Carlos Humphrey an opportunity to get valuable playing time for his reserves.

10th Annual Hoopapalooza - girls' varsity was the game of the day

Wednesday, January 23, 2019

Shorecrest girls' varsity basketball team
Saturday, January 19, 2019 marked the tenth annual celebration of all-day local high school basketball games between Shorewood and Shorecrest, known by the catchy name, Hoopapalooza.

Games were played at Shorecrest and included every basketball team from each school.

The freshmen and JV teams squared off during the afternoon, then the girls’ varsity game was played at 5:00pm.

Scots took the Thunderbirds 45 to 26, mostly on the strength of the Scots’ persistent defense. The score suggests a closer match than was the case.

With the win, the #6 ranked Scots saw their record climb to 8-1 in WesCo, 14-1 for the season. The T-Birds fell to 2-7/4-11.

Shorewood brought a full complement of fans, teams and cheerleaders to the event. The Scots contributed a comparable contingent, along with the Vince Caruso-directed band, and the Linda Cobb-led flag team.

The gymnasium was full; there was a food truck at the entrance, and the campus lawn serviced as auxiliary parking. The mood was festive, the crowd well behaved, as has become the Hoopapalooza custom.

The Scots bolted to a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The T-Birds narrowed the gap to nine in the third quarter, but couldn’t pull any closer than that. The Thunderbirds simply could not match the speed and skill of the Scots and the point spread continued to build throughout the final quarter.

With a 19 point lead and 5.9 seconds to go in the game, the Scots got a little lax and the T-birds stole the ball and drove down the court for what appeared would be a layup just before the final buzzer.

Out of nowhere came junior Sydney VanNess for the Scots, as competitive as any player to ever wear the Green and Gold. She sprinted the length of the court, went high in the air and slammed the ball back on top of the opponent. The resounding thud could be heard all over the gym. Hard to tell a kid to stop competing.

Scots fans roared for the exclamation point on a big win over their arch-rival. Hard to tell a kid to stop competing.

Scots’ second year coach Carlos Humphrey substituted liberally, getting all the girls on his roster meaningful playing time before the playoffs start in February.

Senior Audrey Dietz led the way for the Scots with 12 points, while junior Amanda Lee chipped in with 9.

Aubrey Dietz dazzled on the court
as a player and a Flagger.
Dietz, not content to just play the game, surprised many when she joined her Flag team at halftime to perform their well-choreographed routine while still wearing her basketball uniform. There’s no truth to the rumor that the tall post player helped sweep out the gym at the end of the night.

Afterwards, Dietz reflected on her last Hoopapalooza. “Although to many it’s just a simple game of basketball, it means so much more than that when you’re out there.
"It’s my last rivalry game, it meant I was heading toward the end of my rigorous journey as a high school basketball player, a hard goodbye to be saying.
"While we didn’t play our best, give Shorewood credit for playing hard and putting up a great fight. They’ve really gotten better.”

As for her decision to twirl her flag at halftime:

“I decided to go out with a bang. If I’m going to be “performing” basketball, I might as well “perform” with my flag. As a senior, it seemed like the right thing to do. And although I missed a few moves, I’d do it again! It was so much fun to run back onto the court at the end of the half with my gloves on, flag in hand, sweating in my basketball uniform. It was truly a Senior Experience.”

The Scots are in a virtual tie for first place along with Snohomish, Arlington, and Archbishop Murphy, all with only one league loss. Key games ahead see the Scots travel Tuesday the 22nd to play Murphy, and their home game on Tuesday the 29th against the always dangerous and superbly coached Edmonds-Woodway Warriors will go a long way to determining seeding slots for Districts.

Senior Amanda Kagarabi analyzed the team’s success. “We’re just taking things one game at a time. We’ve got a HUGE one coming up Tuesday, and from here on out it’s all pretty good matchups. Our playoffs, honestly, start right now. Team chemistry is good and everyone’s ready to work hard and keep winning.”

SC schedule can be found HERE.

For the T-Birds, Mark Haner is a superb coach and his squad showed a lot of improvement since the teams first met on December 5th, a 61-16 SC win. Back then the ball handling was crude, and they seemed a bit unsure of what to do or how to do it. Saturday they showed dribbling and passing skills, an understanding of their offensive plays and defensive styles, and most importantly, a desire to win. Love to see great adult leadership for our children.

Shorecrest grad makes her presence known on college team

Sunday, December 9, 2018

Julia Strand
Strand Records First Collegiate Double-Double

2018 Shorecrest grad Julia Strand is already making her presence known on the women’s basketball team at Chapman University.

She recorded a ‘double-double’ Saturday in the team’s 69-62 win over Redlands. Strand had 14 points and ten rebounds in 29 minutes as the Panthers upped their mark on the young season to 6-1.

Strand, the daughter of Mike and Kim Strand of Lake Forest Park, is averaging just over 9 points and 5 rebounds a game, while shooting a robust 57% from the field. She has been the first player off the bench for the Panthers.

She seems to have made a smooth transition from high school to college.

“I am having so much fun. It’s definitely harder than I thought it would be and pretty time consuming, which took some adjusting to, but I am so glad I am playing and going to school here. Some of my best friends are my new teammates. The whole environment with all the girls is so supportive and fun, and we all push each other to be better. I am super happy here.”

Her coach is happy she’s there, too. Carol Jue is in her 17th season as Head Coach of the Panthers and has a 290-116 record, winning an impressive 71.4% of her games. They play a smart, scrappy brand of pressure basketball that’s truly fun to watch.

Here’s what she has to say about the six-foot tall former Scot.

"What a gem we have in Julia!! We are so fortunate she chose Chapman and is becoming such a force on our team. She’s making an impact in the center position with her rebounding and scoring. She’s a fast learner and she’s able to make adjustments quickly. We have her playing in the front of our press defense with the guards. Thank goodness she’s on our team!!"

Chapman, the defending Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference champion, is an NCAA Division-III school located in the City of Orange, right in the heart of Orange County, California, a stone’s throw from the Big A, Anaheim Stadium.

Its noted graduates include former Mariners owner (and U.S. Ambassador to Spain) George Argyros, actor Colin Hanks, San Diego attorney Tim Workman, former Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and former UCLA basketball coach Steve Lavin.

Sign up for Shorecrest girls' basketball feeder teams

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Tryouts for Shorecrest High School girl’s feeder basketball teams are on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 7-9pm at Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

All Shoreline-area 5th-8th grade and girls bound for Shorecrest High Schools are eligible for tryouts.

Girls from other areas are welcome if their high school doesn’t have a feeder team for their grade.

RSVP for tryouts HERE or email the organization. Tryouts are free. While feeder organizations are nonprofits, there will be a team fee to cover gym space, league entry, uniforms, and coaches. Scholarships are available.

The organization is seeking two coaches, as well as one or two more parent volunteers.

A feeder team is a team made up of girls who are in elementary or middle schools that "feed" to a particular high school (like Brookside Elementary to Shorecrest).

The goals are to build fundamentally sound players and great teammates prepared for the high school system.

The feeder program goal is to have at least one team for each grade. Kids from other area high schools that either don’t have or don’t make their feeder team are eligible to play with Shorecrest feeder teams. But they will be prioritized after local kids.

It's football season - so time to get ready for basketball - Feeder Program

Saturday, September 8, 2018

By Rob Oxford

Another school year is upon us and although the football season has only just begun, many of our young athletes are already focused on the upcoming basketball season.

Back in August we introduced you to Shorecrest's new Basketball Coach, Eddie George. When I tell you he is excited for his first season as the Head of Highlander Hoops, I mean it with all sincerity.

Coach George brings years of experience as a player and coach, having spent time playing in the ABA, CBA, and Overseas. After spending the past seven years coaching AAU and high school basketball, the Shoreline School District was successful in recruiting this highly sought after addition to their coaching staff.

At a mini-camp held during the Summer, returning players shared with this reporter their enthusiasm at the direction in which they feel the program is headed and the new coach's approach to the game of basketball. Junior Guard Jack Sims is encouraged about the prospect of a much "faster paced game" under Coach George. Jack admits that with the recent graduation of such standouts as Chris Lee and Phillip Pepple, the Scots will need to develop a more balanced attack on the court. He welcomes what he calls a "new perspective" under Coach George and "new play styles" that will enhance the Highlanders offensive attack.

Those who know him more intimately admit that Coach George is hard but fair. He demands excellence, is a tireless worker and expects the same of his players. "Feeder" basketball, which is very important to Coach George, allows younger players to compete against other schools in WesCo that they will ultimately be facing at the high school level.

The Shorecrest Feeder program is no longer affiliated in any way with the Shoreline Sports Foundation which previously ran the program and although district rules forbid Coach George from involvement with the program directly, he has put together an all star cast of trainers and coaches to help express and implement his coaching philosophy.

Longtime Shoreline sports enthusiasts will be familiar with Coach (“Sgt.”) Mike Lawson, an experienced trainer who has worked with local as well as many NBA players. Mike is an award-winning coach for North City youth basketball and currently serves as a strength coach for several colleges and high schools. He played basketball overseas as well as in an NBA summer league in 1996. Mike created the Sonics 4 on the Floor outdoor tournament for the Seattle Supersonics and helped run the Supersonic kids summer camps. He was with the Seattle Reign (women's pro basketball) as well as with the Seattle Storm for many years where he has two championships as a practice player.

Coach Mike welcomes and encourages parents and older siblings alike to reach out with questions or concerns, to just say hello and to see how they themselves can get involved to support our young student athletes. More information on Coach Mike HERE.

If you missed the article on Coach George posted in August, a link to that story is available HERE

Scots season stopped by Seattle Prep

Thursday, March 1, 2018

Shelby Gresch (L) and Julia Strand (R) on Senior Night

The Shorecrest Scots girls basketball team saw their resoundingly successful season screech to a sad halt Wednesday night at the hands of the Seattle Prep Panthers, losing in the first round of the State Tournament, 46-41. They ended their season with an overall record of 17-8.

The Scots concluded their outstanding 2017-2018 basketball season at the Tacoma Dome Wednesday night. The cavernous dome, with stands at some considerable distance from the court, and a low pitch to them, at that, makes it a facility more suitable for motocross, tractor pulls and stock shows. Witnessing basketball in this arena is comparable to watching it on a 13 inch TV. But what the dome lacked in atmosphere and intimacy, the two teams’ intensity more than made up. Family, students, cheerleaders and fans showed up in force to cheer on their treasured Scots, relieved to have finally arrived after slogging on I-5 for upwards of two hours.

The Panthers took the opening tip and attempted to score. Scots rebounded and created numerous opportunities to score. Unfortunately, the Scots could not find a hot hand. Both teams sparred and probed looking for an advantage. Initial action was slow as they felt each other out. Loose ball handling and several walks cost the Scots valuable processions. The shooting for both squads was cold, likely a combination of nerves, stifling defense, and the unique sight lines presented at the Done. The Panthers briefly pressed their defense trying to disrupt the Scots. The Scots did the same and finished the quarter with 6 fouls. Fencing by both clubs proved inconclusive and the quarter ended Scots 4 - Panthers 7.

The second quarter started at a deliberate pace by both sides. Errors and walking violations peppered the activity for the first six minutes. Scots “soft” press yielded a slight advantage on three occasions. In two instances Scots aggressive defense caused the Panthers to turn the ball over on shot clock violations. While scoring picked up for both teams, the Panthers maintained a slight lead. Panther three point shooting proved to be effective. The second quarter ended Scots 20-Panthers 22.

The third was played at a faster pace with an increase in scoring by both squads. Panthers kept the lead. SC senior Julia Strand picked up her third foul after a minute and a half of play. The freshman forwards for the Panthers started to have some success slicing through the Scots defense in the key. Scots defensive rebounding led by senior Shelby Gresch kept the Scots competitive for the quarter. It ended Scots 29 and Panthers 34.

The fourth was marked by a fast pace, sharp passing and hard drives to the basket. Conversely, the advantage was squandered by walking violations and casual ball handling. The Scots narrowed the gap to three points with two and half minutes left and further reduced the lead to two points with 56 seconds remaining. The Panthers made their free throws down the stretch to ice the game. The outcome was contested from opening tip to final buzzer. Final Scots 41 - Panthers 46.

The young Scots had only two seniors and two juniors on the roster. Both young teams gave all they had to give that evening. The fans knew it, expressed their appreciation throughout the contest and were very proud of the effort of their players. All participants have every reason to feel good about the game they played.

Every enthusiastic athlete wants to play just one more game, to have just one more shot, for the ride to continue. At the same time they know that the competition will come to a bittersweet end, either as a champion or with a final defeat. The finality is particularly poignant for the seniors because it is the last game of the last year. Often a strong focus on the goal fogs the pleasure of the quest. Thankfully, our memories of the wonderful remain vivid over a lifetime while the sting of disappointment eases into a hazy distance.

It was a GREAT YEAR!
