Shorecrest's Julia Strand fights through injuries to end her high school career at State

Thursday, March 1, 2018

Julia Strand in game with Lynnwood
Julia Strand was the Scots leading scorer from the State Championship team two years ago.

She tore her ACL early in the season last year, and only through her dedication and hard work was she able to make it back onto the court, much less play at such a high level that she is expected to be named First Team All WesCo this season.

When she fouled out in her final game against Seattle Prep with less than ten seconds to play in the game, there was no holding back the tears … from her or many of the SC fans at the Dome.

But the sun came out the next day, as it always seems to, and the reflective and proud senior shared these thoughts.

It hurts right now for sure. It was a disappointing end to the season. We battled the whole way and we were pretty evenly matched, but it just came down to making and missing shots, and we didn’t come out on the right end of that last night.
But, in the end I’m really proud of our team. It’s really impressive that we even got there when many teams didn’t. I told the team before the game to enjoy the moment and to be proud of what we’ve accomplished.
I’m really happy to have ended my high school career on the big stage, even though I think we could’ve gotten farther.
And for the season, we were always the underdogs but we really proved ourselves and showed everyone that we deserve to have gotten where we did. We always battled and we’ve worked so hard, and I think everyone else now knows what it takes, and will continue that on with the program.

Look out Tacoma Dome - Shorecrest girls are coming to town

The Shorecrest girls basketball team defeated the Cleveland Eagles, the Metro League champs, 43-36, Saturday at Bellevue CC to qualify for the 3A State Tournament.

The Scots (17-7) will square off against the Seattle Prep Panthers (18-5) Wednesday night at 7:15 in the Tacoma Dome, 2727 E D St, Tacoma 98421.

The Bellevue gymnasium and foyer were bustling with Scots and Eagles fans and family. Stands on both side of the court where nearly filled with anxious supporters. The new and better lighting enhanced the ambiance of the arena.

The Scots set up their one-on-one defense quickly and with a turnover launched a fast-paced attack resulting in an 8 to 0 lead over the Eagles early in the first quarter.

Fast breaks initiated by senior Julia Strand, with junior Audrey Dietz and senior Shelby Gresch on the wings, produced numerous opportunities for scoring. By mid-quarter the Eagle were starting to adjust to the up tempo game of the Scots. (The Seattle Times got a great shot of this play)

Sophomores Amanda Lee and Sidney VanNess were quick to scramble for loose balls going to the floor frequently throughout the contest.

At the six minute mark Lee joined in a scrum, came up bleeding from both sides of her nose, and departed the court.

While both squads were cold early, the seven defensive rebounds by the Scots limited second shot opportunities for the Eagles and kept the Scots in the lead through the quarter, ending at Scots 9 and Eagles 2.

In the early stages of the second quarter, the Scots one-on-one defense, with excellent communications and switching, kept the Eagles in check. Some casual ball handling held down the Scots scoring as well.

Two minutes into the quarter the courageous Lee returned to the court with some “unwelcome” adornment in her nose. She continued to execute an effective point game and the pace quickened late in the quarter.

Sophomore Kira Wood came off the bench to hit her first three pointer, ending the half Scots 19 Eagles 14.

The starting five opened up the third quarter with a fast-paced up and down game, and Cleveland matched the pace. Defensive rebounding again played a significant role in holding down the opponent and building a lead over the Eagles.

Several give and go plays, Wood to Strand, further increased the lead. The defensive work of the tall trio of Strand, Gresch and Dietz on the inside made it difficult for the Eagles post to maneuver in the key. With the increased intensity, the Scots accrued six fouls in the quarter. The third closed Scots 34 and Eagles 24.

Ten seconds into the final quarter, the Eagles were already in the foul bonus. For the Scots, a fast break from Strand to Dietz was a picture perfect score that energized the team.

The Eagles picked up their defense and ground their way back into the game, chipping away at the Shorecrest lead. The Scots responded with a three guard offense that damped down the Eagles.

With two and a half minutes left in the game the score was tied.
With tension building and two minutes to go, Sydney VanNess hit a three pointer, the biggest shot of her life, to give the Scots a lead they would not relinquish.
After several failed Eagles scoring attempts, Strand rebounded a Cleveland miss. With time running down on the shot clock, and just over a minute to play, the steady senior Strand iced the game with a step-back three that got nothing but net.

Final score, Scots 43 Eagles 36.

Scots fans gave the team a standing ovation and the team reciprocated.

Wednesday at 7:15pm it will be Seattle Prep vs Shorecrest at the TACOMA Dome—STATE!

Scots lose in District Finals 60-49; face Cleveland in Regionals next weekend

The Shorecrest Girls' hopes of cutting down the nets were dashed Saturday evening at Jackson HS as they lost to the Stanwood Spartans 60-49 in the Northwest District One 3A Championship game. Stanwood avenged a rare home-court defeat they suffered at the Scots’ hands on their Senior Night earlier this month, 55-51.

SC will return to face Cleveland this Saturday February 24 at 4pm at Bellevue CC. The winner of that game will proceed to the Tacoma Dome.

It was an exciting scene at the mammoth Jackson gym, with both sides giddy with anticipation.

The stands were full behind both benches. Stanwood had a strong contingent of fans along with the Stanwood band, Stanwood cheerleaders and students.

Scots fans included young siblings to grandparents and everything in between. The crowd spanned multiple generations, from toddlers to the toddling.

Scots took the opening tip and drove for a basket. In the first half of the first quarter Scots employed a harassing one-on-one defense that resulted in a number of turnovers and an eight point lead.

Initially a fast-paced game played by both teams shifted to a more deliberate pace that favored the Spartans. SC’s three point shots were not dropping and interior passes were often disrupted by the Spartans. The quarter ended Scots 15, Spartans 13.

At the start of the second quarter, first-year SC coach Carlos Humphrey emphasized the need to move more on offense to get some separation.

The Spartans responded with high intensity defense. The Spartans edged into a small lead partly due to out-rebounding the Scots. SC shooting in the last four minutes of the second quarter went cold and resulted in a lead for the Spartans at the half, 29-23.

Scots opened the third with a pressing defense but the Spartans were ready for it and went over the top quickly. The contest oscillated back and forth, four points either way. The slower Spartan pace produced an advantage. Concurrently the Scots' three point game failed them, hitting only 21%. The Scots persisted, though, and managed to narrow the Spartans' lead to four at the end of the third, 42-38, Stanwood.

The fourth opened with the Scots running a press that created some turnovers. It remained a seesaw battle until mid-way in the fourth. At that point the Spartans added to their lead while the Scots shooting turned cold at the worst possible time. With three minutes left and an eight point deficit the Scots traded fouls for the ball. The Spartans, primarily Jillian Heichel and Ashley Alter, were very good from the line and increased the lead.

The final score was Stanwood 60, Shorecrest 49. It was the first District Championship for the Spartans going back to the ’70’s, a well deserved win for their team and their long-time, mild-mannered, professorial coach Dennis Kloke.

Senior Julia Strand led the Scots with 14 points in the hotly contested rematch. Sophomore Amanda Lee contributed 12 points to the effort. Senior Shelby Gresch added her usual stellar rebounding skills. Junior Audrey Dietz patrolled the baseline with great effectiveness while Sophomore Sidney VanNess generated lots of energy with her aggressive floor game. Both squads gave it their all and should be very proud of a game well played.

Strand graciously commented after the game “They’re a really good team. We fought hard, but it just wasn’t our night. Our shots just wouldn’t fall. But we’ll be ready for Regionals and I’m confident in our team. We’ll get the next one."

SC will face Cleveland next Saturday at 4pm at Bellevue CC in the Regionals. The winner of that game will proceed to the Tacoma Dome. The loser’s season will end.

Shorecrest Girls play Saturday for District Championship

The Shorecrest Girls basketball team drubbed Lynnwood by a 58-36 count in the Northwest One District 3A semi-finals Tuesday night at Mountlake Terrace.

They will face Stanwood this Saturday at 5pm up at Jackson HS for the District Championship. Both teams have qualified for next weekend’s State Tournament regional round.

The Scots defeated the Spartans 55-51 in the Stanwood gym on February 5.

In the Lynnwood game, the Scots (16-6 this season) sputtered some at the beginning, but soon found their legs thanks to the outside shooting of sophomore Amanda Lee, whose ‘three-atrics’ included five baskets from behind the 3-point line. And senior captain Julia Strand delivered her usual brilliant performance, scoring 18, with the majority coming from quick cuts under the basket along with one 3-pointer.

Strand, the leading scorer on the SC State Championship team from two years ago, was lost last year to a knee injury suffered in the second game of the season. This year’s team is young, with Strand and Shelby Gresch the only seniors.

“Saturday will be the biggest stage this team has seen, but I think we’ll be ready,” said Strand.

Both Shorecrest hoops teams undefeated in WesCo

Julia Strand is back after a year off
with a knee injury
With only three weeks to go in the regular season, both the girls (6-0, 11-3) and the boys (6-0, 11-2) basketball teams from Shorecrest find themselves undefeated and in first place in the 3A WesCo standings.

Ladies first…. Rookie head coach Carlos Humphrey inherited a talented squad from former coach Dori Monson, and he has taken that talent and added some of his own touches, including switching defenses back-and-forth, using a variety of zones as well as man-to-man. On offense, the team takes advantage of its height by running a high/low post offense.

The team’s lone seniors, Shelby Gresch (5’11”) and Julia Strand (6’1”), were integral parts of the State Championship team from two years ago, and their leadership down the stretch will be vital if the team is going to hang another white banner in the gym.

Strand, who was the team’s leading scorer two years ago, was lost for the season last year to a horrific knee injury. Her mere presence this season is a testimony to her character and dedication.

The unselfish-to-a-fault Gresch needs to shoot more. Junior Audrey Dietz puts her lanky 6’1” frame to good use scoring and rebounding. Junior Jenna Tikalsky and sophomores Kira Wood, Sydney VanNess and Amanda Lee all saw significant playing time as freshmen last year. VanNess is a scrappy, rugged player, Tikalsky a good ball-distributor, Lee a deadly outside shooter, and Wood is the point guard whose primary priority needs to be getting the ball to her teammates.

The Scots face the toughest stretch of their schedule in their final six games, as they play all the teams that are right behind them in the standings. Their biggest challenge will be to increase their intensity and focus on each possession, and play smart, tough, and hard-nosed hoops from the opening tip to the final horn.

Friday night they’ll host Edmonds-Woodway, coached by former SC coach Jon Rasmussen. Four of their final six games are at home.

Girls Schedule

6'9" Philip Pepple
As for the Shorecrest boys, they are led by 6’9” Philip Pepple and 6’2” Chris Lee, both seniors.

Pepple is one of those rare high school athletes who is clearly ready to play at the next level. He can score from outside as well as inside.

Rims around the league are still rattling from the force of some of his thunderous dunks.

Lee is rare in his own right, a true three-sport star (football, basketball, and track) who unselfishly gets the ball to others when they’re open, but can score prolifically when needed, especially from beyond the three-point stripe. The challenge facing Coach Brian Fischer’s squad will be finding other players who can score when opposing defenses overcommit to stopping Pepple and Lee.

Boys Schedule

Saturday January 27 is one date in particular for local fans to circle on their calendar.

This year’s Hoopapalooza will be at Shorewood, with the girls' varsity game starting at 5pm, while the boys' game kicks off at 7pm.

It’s always a festive occasion, a celebration of our two schools' basketball teams and the genuinely friendly rivalry that exists between them.

After ten years, Dori Monson steps down as girls basketball coach at Shorecrest

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Coach Dori Monson
The most successful era in Shorecrest girls basketball history came to an end last week when Head Coach Dori Monson gathered his team together and told them he was stepping down after ten years with the program.

"I will miss everything about coaching at SC," Monson said.
"Between my Monday through-Friday job (as a talk radio host from 12-3pm on KIRO 97.3 FM), and my weekends hosting on the Seahawks Radio Network, I wasn't certain I could continue to give the girls and the program 100%.
"And when you ask for 100% from the kids, they deserve the same from their coach.
"I didn't like dropping a bombshell on the team with my resignation, but I am hopeful this was the best for the program."

During his time as the Scots coach, they compiled an overall record of 125-72.

One highlight of his career came in 2012 when the team took fourth in State, bringing home the first trophy in SC girls basketball history.

The team was special to Monson since the seniors were girls he had coached from grade school on up. The team included Mickey Greenburg, Janie Uppinghouse, Allison Jones, Bri Lasconia (who played for SPU) and India Matheson (played for Central Washington).

"Our families had all grown very close as we traveled around the West Coast in AAU ball - tournaments in Reno and Vegas and Hawaii. So to be able to share a first-ever State trophy with that group was quite special."

Monson and the Scots reached the pinnacle in 2016 as the team won the State Championship and Monson was named Coach of the Year in the state of Washington.

"We had a lot of trials along the way, but we came together for an almost perfect postseason run. After a loss at Districts to Lynden, our record sat at 12-10. But then, led by Uju Chibuogwu - the State 2A Player of the Year, and the phenomenally athletic Wurrie Njadoe, we got on a magical run that started with a 59-24 Regional win over Franklin-Pierce.

"Then, at State in Yakima, we beat Washougal by 17, #1 East Valley by 17, and then, in the State Championship game, we avenged our District's loss and knocked off Lynden 49-43 for the first basketball State Championship in Shorecrest history," he said.

"We also became the first team in the history of Washington HS basketball - boys or girls - to win a State Championship with ten losses. I'm very proud of how we came together for that postseason run," he continued.

Monson concluded, "I am very blessed to have had a decade of fantastic kids (and parents) that I got to work with at Shorecrest. I also know the next coach will be inheriting a terrifically talented team and that the program is in fantastic shape."

After a 68-65 loss to Bellevue College on January 25th the Shoreline Dolphins found themselves at 2-3 in the North Region. The Phins trailed 1st place Peninsula by 2 games and sat in 5th place in the North Region standings.

Nine games later Shoreline CC is celebrating their 1st North Region championship since 2010 and only the 4th Region championship in the history of Shoreline Men’s Basketball.

The Phins began their turnaround with two big road wins to close out the first half of North Region play. Shoreline won at Olympic by a score of 68-54 then traveled to Everett and came away with a tough 83-75 victory.

Next up was a trip to Port Angeles to take on Peninsula and try to pull within one game of the Pirates. Playing in a high school gym due to inclement weather at Peninsula’s campus, the Phins pulled out an ugly 58-51 road win.

The Phins would go on to win their next 5 games completing an 8 game win streak that took them from 5th to 1st. Shoreline dropped their final game of North Region play to Everett but still secured the North Region title and the #1 seed heading into the NWAC Basketball Championships.

Shoreline will participate in the NWAC tourney beginning on Thursday, March 9th at Everett Community College. The draw for the NWAC Basketball Championship Tournament will take place on Sunday, March 5th at 3pm.

You can watch it live on the NWAC YouTube Channel.

A glorious season ended with a resounding thud Wednesday night when the Shorecrest boys basketball team came a cropper against the Stanwood Spartans, 64-52 in the first round of the 3A State Tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

The Scots finished the year at 22-3, with two of their losses coming against Stanwood, the other at the hands of Mountlake Terrace. They notched wins against all four of the 4A teams they faced.

The last four minutes of the first half spelled doom for the Scots, as they committed turnovers on 7 straight possessions. The Spartans were able to break open a close game, extending their 17-16 lead midway through the second period to a 34-20 halftime lead.

Normally reliable guards Chris Lee and Malcolm Rosier-Butler couldn't have picked a worse night to go ice cold, combining for a measly 5 for 27 shooting from the field.

Philip Pepple did his level best to pick up his struggling teammates, scoring 16 points, hauling down 12 rebounds, and blocking 7 shots.

Simon Acker grabbed 8 rebounds and scored 9 points, falling just shy of a double-double in his final game. The slender Stanford-bound senior scholar reflected after the game what the experience of playing on his high school team had meant to him.

"I loved having these cool guys for teammates and hanging around with them, guys I wouldn't have gotten to be with if not for basketball. And getting to compete for my school and help elevate school spirit is something I'll always remember".

Stanwood coach Zach Ward, gracious in victory, shared his thoughts on going up against the Scots.

"Shorecrest is very well coached. Coach Fischer makes you do things you don't want to do. They have three scorers who are hard to stop. We were lucky they didn't shoot well tonight, unlike how they shot in the District championship game against us."

The Spartans' reward for eliminating the Scots? They have a 5:30 quarter-final game Thursday against Nathan Hale, the #1 ranked team in the USA.

Hale enjoyed the benefit of the statistical anomaly of having seven (7) players happen to transfer to the home of the Raiders in the off-season.

Shorecrest boys basketball headed for State tournament after comeback win Saturday

By Frank Workman

For the second straight season, the Shorecrest boys basketball team is headed to the state tournament following their comeback win over Edmonds-Woodway Saturday at Bothell HS, 74-63.

It didn't come easily though, as the Warriors took a 32-26 lead into the halftime locker room on the strength of hitting six 3-pointers in the second stanza.

But the Scots came out ready and rarin' to go in the third quarter, as evidenced by the fact they outscored the Warriors 48-31 over the final sixteen minutes.

"We knew we needed to buckle down and we really put the clamps to them on defense in the second half," said junior guard Chris Lee after the game. Lee led all scorers with 24 points, including a clutch 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the decisive fourth quarter.

At halftime, senior captain Steven Lin "told the team to not be fazed, that we've dealt with bigger adversity. I was just trying to keep everyone's mindset positive and to be confident with one another and just really go after them. We had to be more aggressive".

The Scots' aggression showed in how often their guards drove the lane, resulting in 25 free throw attempts, with 20 of them going in.

Senior Malcolm Rosier-Butler was sidelined with a leg cramp for the last three minutes of action, but not before finishing with 19 points, most of them coming on drives to the hoop. When he did miss, junior Philip Pepple was there to grab the rebound and put the ball back in. Pepple scored 18.

Ed-Way closed the lead to 61-56, but SC senior Walter Wang drilled his second three of the game with1:35 left to put the game out of reach. Lee and Pepple closed out the scoring from the free throw line to end the game.

Afterward, a happy coach Brian Fisher had this to say, "We made some mistakes in the first half, but we got smarter as the game went on. We know E-W is good, they have a lot of players, and they really went on a run in the second quarter.
"This has really been a dream season for us, such as excellent team. We practice hard, we play hard, the boys play for each other. I am so proud of them."

Last year the Scots competed at the 2A level and came within an eyelash of winning the championship, settling for second place.

Stepping up to the 3A ranks this season, the road figures to be rockier for the Scots if they're going to hang another banner in the gym.

They open play Wednesday at 5:30pm in the Tacoma Dome against another Wesco rival, Stanwood, in a loser-out game. The teams split their two games, with the Spartans winning 75-61 on their home court to finish the regular season. The Scots knocked them off 55-52 to win the District Championship ten days later.

The winner of that game figures to face Nathan Hale in the quarter-finals. The number one ranked team in the country had a great recruiting off-season.

Shorecrest Boys play Edmonds-Woodway in Regionals Saturday

Shorecrest team after winning Regionals
By Frank Workman

The Shorecrest Scots boys basketball team faces a familiar foe, Edmonds-Woodway, in a familiar setting Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock, at Bothell HS, in the 3A Regionals.

The winner advances to the Tacoma Dome. The loser goes home.

SC comes into the game with a season record of 21-2.

The Warriors tied the Scots for second place in Wesco play this season with identical 10-2 league records. This will be a rematch of a January 19 game the host Scots won, 68-67.

Give a slight edge to the Scots for feeling comfortable on the court at Bothell High, as the Scots won the Bothell Holiday Tournament there, winning all three games handily.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), stung by mounting criticism over the years of how teams seem to be unfairly seeded for post-season play, has devised a new plan this year, designed to prevent the most attractive matchups from happening in the early rounds of the state tournament. (What could possibly go wrong?)

The plan is called the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), and as is usually the case with brand-new plans, chances are some changes / improvements will be in store for next year.

One of the features of this year's RPI is that District Tournament play is not taken into account.

Had district games been part of the RPI equation, chances are the Scots would have garnered more respect. They won the Northwest District One championship last Friday, defeating Stanwood 55-52.

Stanwood finished the regular season ranked #8. In the District semi-finals, Shorecrest squashed the Squalicum Storm, 70-65. Squalicum (Bellingham) was ranked #11 in the RPI.

Shorecrest finished the regular season ranked #12, in spite of wins over four 4A teams, including #12 Bothell, #17 Skyline, #21 Auburn-Riverside, and #25 Issaquah, teams that went a combined 51-27. The Scots also defeated perennial 3A power O'Dea.

Ed-Way comes into Saturday's regional ranked #15.

The Scots game will be sandwiched around two terrific girls' contests, as Woodinville faces Chiawana from Pasco at 2, while District Champion Lynnwood plays Mt. Spokane at 6.

Saturday afternoon at Jackson HS, the depleted Shorewood girls were clobbered by Snohomish, 67-25. The T-Birds led 10-9 after the first quarter but it was all Panthers from that point on. Once again, junior Katie Taylor's all-out effort defied belief. She led her team with seven points.

"I'm couldn't be more proud of how the girls kept competing even though the odds kept stacking up against us," said SW Coach Mark Haner after the game, referring to losing Kaitlyn Amundsen, Jalyn Hizey, and Taryn Shelley to season-ending injuries and illness.

Shorewood ended their season with a 17-5 record.

The Shorecrest girls suffered a similar fate at the hands of the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors, 43-35. The Scots (13-10) trailed by 8 at the half, cut that lead in half going into the final quarter, but the young and unselfish Warriors pulled away down the stretch.

Scots senior Jazlyn Owens led her team with 12 points, while rugged senior Sheridan Stevenson fittingly fouled out in her final game. Both were instrumental last year when the Scots won the school's first basketball state championship.

This season the Stanwood Spartans slashed a swatch through the state of Washington, defeating every in-state team they faced.

Until Friday night when they ran into a buzzsaw in the Shorecrest Scots.

For the second straight year, the Shorecrest boys (21-2) have claimed the District One championship by defeating Stanwood (21-2) 55-52 Friday night at Jackson HS.

Scots senior Malcolm Rosier-Butler performed a tight-rope act, scoring 27 points while being in foul trouble throughout the game. MRB was whistled for his second foul just three minutes into the game, yet returned in the second quarter to account for 13 points, giving him 16 for the first half alone. He netted four 3-point baskets in the first half alone.

With MRB on the bench for most of the first quarter, Stanwood sped to a 20-11 lead, with their vaunted half-court trap forcing numerous turnovers and easy baskets.

But the Scots adjusted, outscoring the Spartans 19-7 in the second stanza, including a 14-2 run over a stretch of four minutes, as they took a 30-27 lead into halftime.

MRB picked up his third and fourth fouls in the first two minutes of the second half, the fourth coming on the most questionable call of the entire season.

The game was nip-and-tuck until midway into the final quarter when the Spartans spurted to a six point lead midway into the fourth, 48-42. But the Scots' defense stifled the Spartans down the stretch as they held Stanwood to only four points the rest of the way.

SC's Chris Lee only made one basket all night, but it was a biggie as his 3-pointer broke a 50-all tie with just under a minute to play. Lee finished the night with 8 points (including 5-for-5 from the line) and provided a steady hand against Stanwood's stellar defense.

Stanwood contributed to their own demise by going 2-for-7 from the free throw line in the final quarter.

Said Scots coach Brian Fischer as he headed happily to the team bus, "We're the only team in Washington to beat those guys."
(Stanwood's lone loss of the year was a Xmas holiday tournament game against Mater Dei, from Santa Ana, CA.)
"After losing to them in their gym a week and a half ago, we knew we could beat them if we played well enough. And we sure did."

Both teams were assured a berth to Regionals next weekend. The WIAA will announce pairings on Sunday.
