Shorecrest 70 - Squalicum 65

The Shorecrest boys basketball team defeated Squalicum 70-65 Wednesday night to advance to the NW District One 3A championship game.

With the win, the Scots have clinched a berth in next weekend's Regional round.

They will play Stanwood for the District Championship Friday night at 8pm at Jackson HS in Mill Creek.

The Scots (20-2) took a seemingly comfortable 56-36 lead into the fourth quarter only to have the Storm (17-4) narrow the gap to as few as 2 points with just under two minutes to play, on the strength of eight 3-point shots they made in the final frame.

Philip Pepple sank two pressure-packed free throws with twelve seconds remaining to extends SC's lead to four.

Walter Wang continued his red-hot shooting, hitting three long shots in the first quarter, as SC shot to a 24-15 lead after one quarter.

Malcolm Rosier-Butler led the Scots with 18 points. Pepple had 15, and Chris Lee 12.

"I thought we played hard, we played our game," Pepple said after the game. "We could have done better down the stretch."

Rosier-Butler chimed in "We played well for three quarters, then Squalicum got hot. But we held on and got the win."

Coach Brian Fischer provided some perspective. "Hats off to our players for making it to Regionals. This is a reward, their hard work is paying off."

Walter Wang made the most of a rare start on Senior Night by pouring in 14 first-half points to spark the Shorecrest Scots to a hard-fought 69-58 home win over Arlington Friday night.

The win sets up a long-awaited matchup Monday at Stanwood (11-0/18-1) for the regular season championship, and the number one seed in District playoffs that begin next week.

In addition to Wang's sharpshooting that gave the Scots (10-1/18-1) a twelve point halftime lead, Shorecrest got 31 points from junior center Philip Pepple, 25 of them coming in the second half.

The last thing the Shorecrest boys basketball team needed was an extra emotional edge just before tipoff when they hosted their cross-town rivals Shorewood at Hoopapalooza Saturday night.

But they got one anyway when senior Kat Rodriguez belted out an inspiring rendition, the best rendering of The Star Spangled Banner since Whitney Houston sang it at the 1991 Super Bowl.

With that added boost, the high-flying Scots spurted to a 27-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and were headed on their way to a convincing 85-52 win over the T-Birds.

Scots' coach Brian Fischer was able to empty his bench in the second half with the Scots holding a commanding 45-16 halftime lead.

Senior captain Steven Lin said after the game, "Right now our team is really finding good chemistry with one another and playing solid basketball, and it's always a plus to do so during a rivalry game."
Lin, who epitomizes the Scots' unselfish play went on. "It just feels likes there's something extra to play for whenever it's our cross-town rival."

Shorewood coach George Edwards had to be proud of how his outmanned team scrapped in the second half, nearly playing the powerful Scots even in the final sixteen minutes.

But it was too much Phillip Pepple and Malcolm Rosier-Butler early, as they combined for 25 of the Scots' first half points.

The T-Birds finish off the season with road games next Tuesday and Friday at Arlington and Marysville-Getchell before hosting Snohomish on Senior Night, Monday February 6, 2017.

The Scots (8-1, 16-1) host Snohomish Tuesday and Arlington on Friday, their Senior Night. Monday the 6th they'll travel to face Stanwood, which is undefeated (9-0) in league play.

The basketball rule book says you only have to play five players at a time.

Shorewood's girls basketball coach Mark Haner took it literally Saturday night as his starting lineup played the whole game in the T-Birds' 46-30 win over rival Shorecrest in the Scots gym in Hoopapalooza 2017.

The five are Davi Borromeo, Ledia Musye, Bella Hotham, Katie Taylor, and Taryn Shelley. Shelley led all scorers with 20 points, and she was first to give credit to her teammates.

Shorewood's Katie Taylor puts up
a shot from just outside the key in
early game action.

"Katie and Davi played controlled and were able to handle their pressure very well," said the WSU-bound senior center after the game.

"And Bella and Ledia worked hard down low and were scrappy on defense. Shorecrest is always tough, but it was a good win and I'm proud of my team".

Indeed, Taylor and Hotham were demons on the boards and defense, repeatedly stealing Scots' passes to the low post and blocking shots, holding the Scots far below their season average of 50 points.

In fact, with the Scots desperately trying to rally in the final quarter, SW held them to a single basket.

With the win, the T-Birds have thrown the WesCo 3A standings into a quagmire, with four teams (SW, SC, Snohomish, and Marysville-Getchell) tied for second place at 7-2, behind Lynnwood (9-0).

Hoopapalooza Saturday - all day basketball-fest between Shorewood and Shorecrest

Friday, January 27, 2017

By Frank Workman

This Saturday marks the 8th annual Hoopapalooza, the all-day basketball-fest between our district's two teams, Shorewood and Shorecrest, culminating in the varsity girls facing off at 5, and the boys squaring off at 7.

This year it will be held at Shorecrest, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

There are very few other games on the high school docket Saturday, so the basketball cognoscenti can be expected to descend on the Scots gym, as well as locals who might only get out to see
one game a year.

If the games themselves aren't enough to lure fans to reacquaint themselves with friends and neighbors, then the promise of tantalizing food should do the trick.

Taqueria Tonita Taco Truck and Daddy’s Donuts will be setting up shop in the courtyard right outside the gym, while the SC Boosters already have meatballs marinating for the occasion .... meaning all the major food groups are included.
And, as always, the best gym popcorn you will ever eat sells for only a dollar at the concession stand. Add a box of Junior Mints to your popcorn and you'll be onto the taste sensation that's sweeping the nation.

The Varsity girls game figures to be hotly contested. Both teams are vying for the top spot in the WesCo standings. Shorecrest is 7-1 in league (11-5 overall), while Shorewood is a game behind at 6-2 (14-2).

With District playoffs only 2 weeks away, this game will be pivotal in determining playoff seedings.

SW emerged victorious in their non-league meeting on December 8, 47-35.

The T-Birds feature 6' 2" senior Taryn Shelley, a WSU-commit.

The Scots, last year's 2A State Champions, are led by senior guard Jazlyn Owens.

The nightcap features two teams with opposite records.

The SW boys have struggled under first year coach George Edwards, going 1-7 in league play, 1-15 overall, while the Scots are 7-1/15-1 this season.

The Scots cruised to a 73-58 win at SW on December 12. They are led by 6' 8" junior Phillip Pepple, 6' 3" senior Malcolm Rosier-Butler, and 6' 2" junior Chris Lee.

While it may look like a mismatch on paper, expect the T-Birds to be scrappy as heck, knowing nothing would please their fans more than to knock off their arch-rival.

Here's the complete schedule of games ---

10:30  C-team Girls.
12:00  C-team Boys.
  1:30   JV Girls
  3:00   JV Boys
  5:00  Varsity Girls
  7:00  Varsity Boys

The games will be webcast live by the Shorecrest Live Video Production Club.

Wait ...... did somebody say  'taco truck'?

Shorecrest boys basketball win the QFC Holiday Tournament after toppling O'Dea and Kelowna

Phillip Pepple leaps toward the basket in SC-SW game

The Shorecrest boys basketball team came, saw, and conquered the last three days, winning the QFC Holiday Tournament at Bothell High by convincingly defeating the previously-undefeated hosts, the Bothell Cougars, 80-61, in the championship game Friday night.

The Scots opened tourney play Wednesday against the Kelowna, B.C. Owls, last year's undefeated provincial champions. Shorecrest blazed to a 28-2 lead in the first six minutes and were never headed from that point. Four Scots tallied double figures in the opener, with Phillip Pepple leading the way with 20 points. Daggy Menelik had 18, Chris Lee 15, and Malcolm Rosier-Butler 14.

Thursday night's semi-final match was against vaunted O'Dea, and the Scots bested the Irish, 74-67. Chris Lee led all scorers with 26, while Pepple and Rosier-Butler each notched 23 points.

Friday's finals were against an undefeated (9-0) Bothell Cougar team that was missing a couple players to injury. Showing no pity, the Scots once again started fast, leading 19-10 after the first quarter. SC took a 32-25 lead into halftime. Shots were falling from all directions in the second half for the Scots as they scorched the nets for 27 third quarter points and 21 in the last quarter, when Coach Brian Fischer was able to empty his bench in the game's final minutes.

Throughout the three games the Scots combined tenacious ball-hawking defense, unselfish ball movement, and smart heads-up play to bring home the champion's trophy.

Rosier-Butler, Lee, and Pepple were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Pepple earning MVP honors.

Shorecrest (9-1) resumes play at Meadowdale Tuesday night at 7:15.

Sign up for Shorecrest and Shorewood feeder basketball teams

Friday, September 16, 2016

Basketball summer camp
Tryouts for Shorecrest and Shorewood High School boy’s and girl’s feeder basketball teams start the week of September 26.

All Shoreline-area 5th-8th grade boys and girls bound for either Shorecrest or Shorewood High Schools are eligible for tryouts.

Boy’s tryouts begin on Tuesday, September 27 at Shorecrest. Girl’s tryouts start the week of October 3rd.

Shorewood boy's feeder tryouts are tentatively scheduled the week of October 2nd. Information on the Shorewood boy's feeder program here.

While feeder organizations are nonprofits, there will be a team fee to cover gym space, league entry, and any coach costs. Scholarships are available.

A feeder team is a team made up of boys or girls who are in elementary or middle schools that "feed" to a particular high school (like Brookside Elementary to Shorecrest). The goals are to build fundamentally sound players and great teammates prepared for the high school system.

The feeder program goal is to have at least one boy’s and girl’s team for each grade. Kids from other area high schools that either don’t have or don’t make their feeder team are eligible to play with Shorewood and Shorecrest feeder teams. But they will be prioritized after local kids.

For eligible boys and girls looking for training to prepare for tryouts, they can register for feeder training sessions, which take place every Tuesday and Thursday night through November 13 in the Shorecrest High School gym, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

Updated 9-18-2016 with information about Shorewood boys tryouts.

George Edwards hired as Shorewood Boys Basketball Coach

Sunday, June 19, 2016

Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District have named George Edwards as their new Varsity Boys Basketball coach. Edwards replaces Corey O’Hayre who resigned in May after two years as the T-Birds Head Coach.

This will be Edwards’ first head basketball assignment. However, he is no stranger to Shorewood, the WesCo Conference or area basketball. Most recently Edwards served as the top assistant at Shorewood for four years under the tutelage of Marv Morris from 2009-2012. He also served five-years as an assistant with the T-Birds from 2001-2006.

Overall, Edwards has over 20 years of coaching experience, 12 of those years in the WesCo Conference.

We are excited to have someone with George’s credentials and coaching experience. He came into the interview process with a plan and an excitement to be the long-term leader of the Shorewood Basketball Program.
George is familiar with Shoreline School District, Shorewood and its programs and procedures.
George is well connected with the area basketball community and we feel this will be an asset as he builds this program.

Shorecrest girls win State

Sunday, March 6, 2016

A smiling Julia Strand cuts down the net

By Frank Workman

When the Shorecrest girls' basketball team arrived in Yakima for last week's 2A State Tournament, they were the unknown quantity, easy to overlook.

After all, their record of 15-10 was the worst of all eight teams to play in the Sundome. Teams that have tasted defeat that often usually are just happy to be there, and their expectations are low.

But not so with the Scots, as they crushed all three opponents they faced in Yakima on their way to winning the school's first basketball state championship.

Thursday they waylaid Washougal, 59-42, in the quarter-finals.

Friday it was East Valley (Spokane) that had the poor fortune to get in the way of the Shorecrest juggernaut in the semis.

And Saturday the team saved their best for last, avenging a 52-45 District tournament loss to the Lynden Lions by roaring from behind in the second half on their way to a 49-43 win in the championship game.

The Scots led early in the first quarter, only to see the Lions finish the quarter with a three point lead, 15-12.

When tournament MVP Uju Chibuogwu was whistled for her third foul early in the second quarter, things looked bleak for the Scots.

Junior post player Sheridan Stephenson came off the bench to replace Uju and her rugged studly defense helped hold Lynden to one measly field goal in the quarter. Still, the Scots trailed by five at the half, 22-17.

The Scots caught fire to start the second half, scoring the first seven points to take the lead, 24-22.  Lynden regained the lead until Uju broke a tie with a three-point play at 2:38, giving Shorecrest a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Leading 34-29 to start the final quarter, junior Jazlyn Owens calmly drained a pair of threes early in the quarter. When Stephenson scored from close range with just under ninety seconds to play to stretch the lead to eleven, 45-34, many of the fans who made the journey were dancing in the stands.

After the game, Scots coach Dori Monson told the press "Our goal was to be playing our best ball in February and March, and the girls came out and did just that. Jazlyn Owens raised her game throughout the tournament, especially tonight, to give us a fourth scorer to go along with Uju, Wurrie, and Julia Strand. Plus, she was a great floor leader".

Senior Wurrie Njadoe, who along with sophomore Strand, made the second-team All Tournament Team, believes the tough WesCo 3A schedule they played benefitted the team.

"Lynnwood, Glacier Peak, Ed-Way and Arlington really helped us. They brought our intensity out".

Uju agreed. "The teams in our league pushed us to play better".

Shorecrest Scots. State Champs.

It has a ring to it.

Scots boys drop heartbreaker in finals to Clarkston, 60-59

By Frank Workman

It was everything a State Championship basketball game is supposed to be.

Back and forth, nip and tuck, rock 'em, sock 'em, well-played basketball between two evenly matched teams.

The sort of game that, had it lasted another twenty seconds, could have seen a different outcome.

In the end, when the clock showed all zeroes, the Clarkston Bantams defeated the Shorecrest Scots 60-59, to win the 2A Boys State Championship Saturday at the Yakima Sundome.

Daggy Menelik gave the Scots a 56-54 lead with just over two minutes to play, only to have tournament MVP Trevon Allen tie the score at 56 with a jumper of his own.

When Daggy sank a tough, twisting layup with 1:43 left, Scots' fans hoped that would be the dagger. Instead, the nearly unstoppable Allen coolly drained a 3-pointer to put Clarkston up by one, 59-58, with forty seconds left in the game.

Time out Scots.

When they absolutely, positively had to have a basket, Coach Brian Fischer drew up a play to get the ball to sophomore Philip Pepple in the low post. Pepple, a 6' 7" man-child, got the ball as planned, turned to the hoop, and was fouled while shooting.

Pepple made the first, to tie the game at 59, but missed the second.

Time out Bantams, with eleven seconds to go.

With everybody in the building knowing the ball would be put into Allen's hands, the Scots had athletic senior Aubry Victor guard him. Allen, an Idaho recruit, fired up a long shot with Victor covering him like a blanket - too closely, to the official's liking.

Victor was whistled for the foul with two seconds remaining on the clock. Allen missed the first free throw, made the second to break the tie, then missed the third shot. With no time outs remaining, the Scots desperation shot from 85 feet wasn't close.

Game over.

After the game, Coach Fischer told the press how proud he was of his team.

"They fought hard all post-season. We had our backs against the wall a few times and we always found a way to win. We were just one play away from winning it all. It hurts right now to come this close, but as time goes on, the months and years will go by and they'll have so much to be proud of. The journey has been a heck of a lot of fun".

Allen, who was one of three Bantams to play the entire game, finished with 30 points. Clarkston was 10-for-21 from three point range.

Pepple, who made the All-Tournament team, was virtually unstoppable, scoring 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Senior Tobyn Lawson, headed for Cal Baptist next year, scored 13 points in his final game.

The Scots finished the season with a mark of 19-9, while playing most of their games against 3A competition. The champion Bantams posted a 25-1 mark.
