King's students are Athletes of the Week

Saturday, March 5, 2016

Each week throughout the school year, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) recognizes twelve varsity athletes, a male and a female from each of the six classifications, who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week.

Corey Kispert, a Sophomore, and Daylee Hanson, a Senior, from King's High School were nominated by a community member and selected by WIAA staff as Athletes of the Week for achievements in Basketball.

Kispert scored 32 of the Knights’ 51 points, in a 51-41 victory over Vashon Island last week’s 1A state regional game.

Hanson supplied 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals as the Knights earned its sixth-consecutive state berth with a win over Bellevue Christian.

In recognition of their accomplishment, each Athlete of the Week winner receives a congratulatory letter from WIAA Executive Director, Mike Colbrese, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week t-shirt, and a certificate. Winners are also posted to the WIAA website.

Scots boys topple Tumwater, advance to finals

Friday, March 4, 2016

The Shorecrest boys basketball team overcame a 13-minute scoring drought (including all of the third quarter) to defeat the Tumwater T-Birds 47-41 and advance to the 2A State Championship Game Saturday afternoon at 3 in the Yakima Sun Dome.

Senior Tobyn Lawson snapped out of a small scoring slump by hitting three 3's in the first quarter to get the Scots close after trailing by nine early.

Shorecrest (19-8) will face the Clarkston Bantams (24-1).

The Scots have two '2nd At State' green banners hanging in their gym.

They'd love to add a white  'State Champions' one.

Shorecrest girls will play Lynden Saturday for the 2A State Championship

The Shorecrest girls basketball team will play Lynden for the 2A State Championship Saturday at 5pm in the Yakima Sun Dome.

The Scots defeated East Valley (Spokane) 58-41 in the semi-finals, leading wire-to-wire in the process.

Balanced scoring from their Big Three was, once again, the recipe for success for the Scots.

Uju Chibuogwu scored 15 despite a cold shooting game (6-21), while fellow senior Wurrie Njadoe also had 15, and sophomore Julia Strand had 14. Aside from Njadoe's 7-for-16 shooting, it was an off-night shooting-wise for Shorecrest, as they were only 17-for-64 (27%) from the field, 2-for-10 from outside the arc.

The Scots raced off to a 9 point lead after the first quarter, and led by 15 at the half. But the Knights came out charging to start the second half, running off seven unanswered points to nearly halve Shorecrest's lead as the Scots' shooting turned cold. The Knights continued to nip at the Scots' heels until midway in the fourth quarter when a Technical Foul cost E. Valley four straight points.

The Scots (17-10) will face the Lynden Lions (23-3) Saturday at 5pm. The two teams met on Presidents' Day in the District semi-finals, with the Lions emerging victorious 52-45 in a game that saw the Scots plagued with foul trouble.

Much more will be at stake Saturday night.

Both Shorecrest teams win opening round games at State Tournament Thursday

Thursday, March 3, 2016

By Frank Workman

Both Shorecrest teams won their opening round games at the State Tournament Thursday and will play in the semi-finals Friday.

But before that happened.....

Wednesday morning a pair of buses arrived outside the gym at Shorecrest High School.

They were destined for Yakima and the 2A State Basketball Tournament.

Their occupants, the boys and girls basketball teams from Shorecrest, could only dream about what their destinies would hold during the 3-day tournament being held at the Sun Dome, in the 'Palm Springs of the Northwest'.

Giddy girls giggled while boys tried their best to maintain a stoic demeanor, as if going to State was no big deal.

It must have been a smooth ride for the girls, as they woke up early Thursday morning to open the tournament at 9am against Washougal, and the Scots ran away and hid from the Panthers 59-42.

Sophomore Julia Strand led the way with 18 points and 8 rebounds, and senior Uju Chibuogwu scored 15 points to go along with a game-high 9 rebounds.

The Scots will take their 16-10 season record into the State semi-finals Friday night against East Valley of Spokane. Game time is slated for 3:45. The Knights are 21-3, following their opening round 57-50 win over Anacortes.

Girls -

Shorecrest       11     14     20     14     59
Washougal        7       9    11     15     42

The Shorecrest boys took the court in Yakima Thursday night with one thought in mind.

After playing two lousy opening halves in their last two games (the District championship game against Squalicum, and last week's Regional win over Steilacoom), they were determined to come out fast against River Ridge, and their game plan worked perfectly, as the Scots raced to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and defeated River Ridge 69-59.

6' 7" sophomore Philip Pepple was sensational for Shorecrest, scoring 23 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field. Junior Malcolm Rosier-Butler added 21, including 4-for-5 from three-point range.

Of a concern to Coach Brian Fischer and his squad was abysmal free throw shooting, as the Scots were a paltry 17-for-34 from the stripe.

The Scots (18-8) will face the winner of Thursday's final game in Yakima, between Ellensburg and Tumwater, at 9pm.

Shorecrest Girls are going to State, too

You'll be forgiven for thinking the Shorecrest girls basketball team listened to an endless loop of 'Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better' on their bus ride Saturday afternoon, on their way to their Regional game in Puyallup to face Franklin Pierce.

After the boys' team qualified for the 2A State Tournament the night before by eking out a close overtime win against Steilacoom, the girls matched the boys' feat (and then some) by swamping the Cardinals 59-24.

After trailing 5-2 early, the Scots went on an amazing 30-2 run, taking a 34-9 lead into the half. In the second half, the Scots' lead reached 40 points, automatically kicking in the WIAA's running-clock rule.

Senior Uju Chibuogwu scored 14 points, with 10 assists and 15 rebounds to lead the way. Jazlyn Owens scored 12 points, and Sheridan Stephenson, playing her best game of the year, added ten, as well as providing outstanding defense against FP's top scorer, Alexius Foster, holding her to only 6 points.

Franklin Pierce                   5      4       8    7 —24

The WIAA conducted a drawing Sunday afternoon to determine the match-ups for the 2A State Tournament that starts Thursday morning in Yakima, and the girls won't have a lot of time Thursday to stew about the game as they kick off the festivities with the early game, 9am, against Washougal.

The boys open Thursday night against River Ridge. Game time is 7:15pm.

Shorecrest stuns Steilacoom in OT - surges to State

Saturday, February 27, 2016

Steven Lin (40) and Omar Camara celebrate with their teammates after SC's OT win

For the second week in a row, the Shorecrest boys' basketball team overcame a horrid first half to charge from behind in the second half to overtake a scrappy squad from Steilacoom Friday night, 66-57 in overtime, to advance to next week's 2A State Championship tournament in Yakima.

Trailing 34-24 at the half, Scots' Coach Brian Fischer pleaded with his team "to quit thinking so much and just play ball like we know how".

As big a hole as the Scots dug themselves in the first half, it would have been substantially worse had it not been for the long-range shooting accuracy of junior Daggy Menelik, who hit all three of his 3-point attempts in the second quarter. Later in the game, it was Menelik whose 3-pointer with :30 to play in the game finally brought the game back to even for the Scots.

The Sentinels had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Philip Pepple had his eighth blocked shot as time expired.

In the overtime, SC took the lead for good on a free throw from Tobyn Lawson. Then junior Malcolm Rosier-Butler made a lay-in, was fouled, and sank the free throw to extend the Scots' lead to 58-54 with 1:30 to play.

"Coach reminded  us at halftime that we'd come from behind last week (in Districts against Squalicum), and that we could do it again", said an excited Rosier-Butler minutes after the game.
"We had, I had, too many turnovers in the first half. We wanted to feed the ball to Philip (Pepple) down low. It was a great team win for us".

Feed Pepple they did, as he had 12 of his 14 points in the second half and overtime, while Rosier-Butler led the Scots with 18.

For Coach Brian Fischer, he felt the relief of a jinx being removed. Seems the site of the game, Mountlake Terrace HS, has been a haunted house for him over the years.

Four years ago his team had a chance to advance to State with a win over Glacier Peak. The Scots led the entire game until 8 seconds remained when GP took a 1 point lead. A shot at the buzzer was off the mark, and that dream of going to State was dashed.

Two years ago his team faced O'Dea with a berth at State on the line. Roaring back from 11 points down with three minutes to play, the Scots had the ball and a 2 point lead with 30 seconds to play, only to have that game slip through their fingers.

"I think I know how the Boston Red Sox felt when they finally won the World Series in 2004 and lifted the Curse of the Bambino".

On Sunday, the WIAA will announce all the pairings for the State Tournament which begins on Thursday.

Going to the Shorecrest game tonight? Save your ticket

Friday, February 26, 2016

For those of you planning to attend the Shorecrest Boys Basketball Regional game vs Steilacoom, 7pm at Mountlake Terrace tonight, be sure to hang on to your ticket and hand stamp. This will allow you access with the same ticket for the Shorecrest Girls Game on Saturday vs Franklin Pierce, 4pm at Puyallup HS.

Per the WIAA: In order to alleviate the concerns regarding the price of a ticket for a single game regional site, the WIAA determined that anyone who purchases a ticket at a single game site on Friday could use that same ticket for entry into any regional site on Saturday provided that person has the ticket stub and hand stamp. Those fans will have the option to watch multiple games at different sites if they choose to do so.

Shorecrest girls play Franklin Pierce at Puyallup Saturday at 4

The season will be on the line when the Shorecrest girls travel to Puyallup HS to face Franklin Pierce Saturday at 4 o'clock in 2A Regional play. A berth at the 8-team State tournament awaits the winner.

The Scots bring a hard-earned 14-10 mark into the contest, having faced rugged 3A competition in WesCo South, including a pair of games against defending state champion Lynnwood. The Cardinals went 18-6 playing in the 2A South Puget Sound League.

"It started out as a really challenging year for us. Lots of injuries early and we kind of stumbled out of the gate (with a 3-5 record),"  SC coach Dori Monson shared this week. "But the girls stayed very focused on our goals. And my goal as a coach always is to peak in the postseason. I think we've played our best basketball the last few weeks."

Franklin Pierce is led by junior Alexius Foster, who is averaging 19.5 points per game. No other Cardinal averages double figures.

Wurrie Njadoe

The Scots have three players averaging double figures. Silky-smooth sophomore Julia Strand leads the team with 16 ppg. Powerful senior Uju Chibuogwu averages almost 13 per game, while lightning-fast senior Wurrie Njadoe contributes 10 points.

Coach Monson has great respect for Saturday's foe.

"Franklin Pierce will be another great test. They have a girl (Foster)  who is averaging almost 20 points a game and she is a terrific player And any time a team comes in with an 18-6 record, that is a legit team. We'll once again have to play our best to move on to State."

If the Scots do survive and advance, they'll qualify for the State Tournament in Yakima next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It would be their third appearance at State, the last time being when they took fourth place in the 2011-2012 season.

Scots win District in OT - 62-56 - Rosier-Butler named MVP

MVP Malcolm Rosier-Butler sets up a play in overtime

By Frank Workman

It takes some breaks, as well as tenacity and teamwork, to win a championship.

A lucky bounce. A call going your way. An unlikely player stepping up big at a key moment. Or an unfortunate injury to an opponent's best player, sidelining him for the remainder of the game.

Or any of a hundred moments that happen over the course of a game that, if even one had gone differently, would spell the difference between victory and defeat, elation from dejection.

All of the above were factors in the Shorecrest Scots boys' basketball team overcoming their worst half of the season and outlasting the Squalicum Storm 62-56, in overtime, to win the Northwest District One 2A championship Saturday night in the grand old gym at Mount Vernon High School.

Tournament MVP Malcolm Rosier-Butler led all scorers with 17 points, while Philip Pepple was a menacing defensive presence in the paint.

Chris Lee for 3!!!!

But it was sophomore Chris Lee who knocked down back-to-back three-point shots early in the overtime period that give the Scots a comfortable lead that they never relinquished.

"The ball came to me and I was open both times.  I couldn't not shoot it. It was my turn to help my team," said the modest Lee after the game, as he clutched a strand of the souvenir net all the Scots ceremoniously cut down after the game.

It's likely none of the post-game festivities would have been possible if not for a knee injury suffered in the second quarter by the Storm's leading scorer, Josiah Westbrook. The lightning-quick senior was unstoppable in the first quarter, scoring 11 of his team's 18 points in the opening stanza. With Westbrook on the bench for the entire second half, his knee wrapped in ice, his team lost its leading scorer, its aggression, and, in the end, the game.

With Westbrook leading the charge, Squalicum raced to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. They extended that lead to 30-14 at the half, as the Scots had trouble competing at both ends of the court.

Shorecrest coach Brian Fischer must have lit a spark at halftime, as the Scots came out firing on all cylinders. Rosier-Butler, held scoreless in the first half, scored half of his team's 16 points in the third quarter, and he took the game over in the fourth quarter, scoring eight straight points to give the Scots their first lead of the game, 44-43, with 1:45 to play. It was nip-and-tuck down the stretch, with Rosier-Butler's twisting, turning layup attempt rimming out at the buzzer, forcing the overtime.

"We came out flat to start with, we couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm, and our starters only accounted for 4 first half points," a jubilant Coach Fischer said after the game.
"Credit the Squalicum defense. Our defense kept us in it, yielding only 16 points in the second half after giving up 30 in the first."
"I’m proud of Aubry Victor and Chris Lee for stepping up in a huge way in crunch time. Aubry hit 6 of 7 CRUCIAL free throws and Chris hit two monster 3’s in overtime. Ben Smolen and Simon Acker gave us most of our offense when the rest of the team was struggling in the first half.
"After the game, I told my team that they should be proud of the way they fought back and that when things get tough in the future, they should always know that they have it in them to turn things around."

The Scots take their 16-8 record into this weekend's Regionals, facing short-but-scrappy Steilacoom (16-8) Saturday afternoon at 4, in the Mountlake Terrace gym.

Shorewood girls out of tournament in hard fought game

By virtue of an unexpectedly easy 62-46 win at Stanwood Friday night, the Shorewood girls' basketball team was back on the court Saturday afternoon at Jackson to face league nemesis Edmonds-Woodway in a winner-to-Regionals / loser-out game for third place in the District One 3A tournament.

Alas for the T-Birds, heavy legs, a short bench, and too much of the Warriors' Missy Peterson spelled their doom as E-W advanced with a hard-fought 43-35 win.

Shorewood finished the season with a 14-10 record.

T-Birds coach Mark Haner, limited to playing only six players Friday night (with starting senior Jasmine Pollard called out of town suddenly following a death in the family) took its toll down the stretch Saturday.

The T-Birds trailed by two with one minute to play and had the ball in their hands with a chance to tie or take the lead. But in the game's key possession, several players eschewed open shots, opting to pass the ball instead. One too many passes resulted in a Warriors' steal that Peterson converted into a bucket to clinch the win.

Peterson led all scorers with 24 points. Her value to her team can best be demonstrated by the fact that when she was whistled for her second foul midway in the first quarter, her team had racked up a 13-2 lead. In her absence, the T-Birds ran off fourteen unanswered points to take a 16-13 advantage.

"I think we just plain ran out of steam in the fourth quarter," a disappointed Haner said after the game. "Ask me tomorrow and I'll be proud of what we accomplished this year, to be playing for third place with teams like Glacier Peak and Stanwood on the sidelines watching. But right now, it hurts to have been this close."

Shorecrest girls' basketball score big win over Lakewood Friday

Saturday, February 13, 2016

The Shorecrest girls' basketball team raced out to an early 15-0 lead en route to an easy 51-24 win over Lakewood Friday night in the Scots gym.

The out-sized and injury-depleted Cougars narrowed the gap at halftime, trailing 25-16, only to have the Scots' defense completely shut them down, holding them to just one basket over the entire second half.

The Cougars were hampered by a pregame injury to their best player, Marissa Blair, who came off the bench but was noticeably limping throughout. In addition, spunky sophomore Jelly Perry took an elbow to the head in the third quarter and sat out the remainder of the game.

Shorecrest enjoyed balanced scoring, with Uju Chibuogwu leading the way with 11 points, while Sheridan Stephenson had 9, and Wurrie Njadoe and Julia Strand both chipped in with 8 points.

The task gets more difficult for the Scots when they face top-seeded Lynden Monday night at 8pm in the old Mount Vernon High School gym. The winner is guaranteed a berth at Regionals and will advance to the District Championship game next Friday at Mt. Vernon. Full bracket information can be found here.

Shorewood, Shorecrest basketball playoffs preview

Thursday, February 11, 2016

High school basketball's regular season came to a close earlier this week, and District One playoffs dominate the sports scene this weekend,  starting Friday.

The Shorecrest girls begin the festivities, hosting Lakewood Friday at 6pm (note the early start). The 2A Scots (6-6, 11-9) tied for fourth place in the 3A WesCo South. Lynden and Archbishop Murphy are the top two seeds, while the Scots are the #4 seed. After the opening round game, the tournament moves to Mount Vernon's venerable gym (worth the price of admission by itself).

Next up Friday night are the 3A Shorewood boys who made their way into the tournament by virtue of a 52-50 win over Everett on Wednesday night. Their reward is a first-round match at top-seeded Edmonds-Woodway Friday night at 7pm. The T-Birds (4-8, 9-12) tied for fifth in WesCo South. Winners bracket games will be held at Jackson HS.

The 7th seeded 3A Shorewood girls travel to Arlington to face the undefeated Eagles Saturday night at 7pm. Coach Mark Haner's T-Birds (7-5, 12-8) finished third, behind defending state champion Lynnwood and Glacier Peak. Three teams will qualify for Regionals, and the T-Birds have hopes of being one of them.

The 2A Shorecrest boys bat cleanup, hosting Cedarcrest Saturday night at 8pm. The Scots (8-4, 12-8) come into the tournament as a four seed, having tied for second in WesCo South. These two teams squared off early in December and the undersized Red Wolves outsmarted and out-hustled the Scots on their way to a 71-65 win. As is the case with the girls' tournament, Lynden and Murphy are the top two seeds.

Brackets and other information can be found here.

By the beginning of the 2nd quarter the score was 24-8 in favor of the Knights. Junior forward Corey Kispert dunked the ball and got the crowd fired up even more. Senior guards Cole Mitchell and Koa Wilkins worked the floor very well by distributing the ball and picking the right times to take smart shots at the basket. The Mountaineers got a dunk from senior center Timothy Soares, but the momentum of that shot wasn’t enough to bring them back. At the end of the 1st half the Knights had a commanding 46-25 edge.

In the 3rd and 4th quarters head coach Rick Skeen started to rest his starters and took the foot off the gas. The game ended with a score of 73-34 in the Knights' favor and they seemed poised to make another deep run this year.

Seniors Wurrie Njadoe and Uju Chibuogwu led the way for the Scots, as Njadoe was the game's high scorer with 21 points, while Chibuogwu had 15, not to mention contributing greatly on defense. Junior Julia Stand had 16 points for the winners.

Junior Jalyn Hizey was the T-Birds' high scorer with 17.

Shorewood shot out to an early lead, up 22-12 after the first quarter. But the Scots went on a 13-1 run to close the gap to 29-27 SW at the half.

The game was tied at 40 going into the final quarter when the Scots turned on the jets, outscoring their rivals 22-14 in the final quarter.

An ailing Scots coach Dori Monson was buoyed by his team's effort, especially in light of their mid-December loss to the T-Birds.

"Great win for our program. Shorewood is a terrific team - it was really fun to see our girls rise to the challenge", said Coach Monson.
"Our three big scorers - Uju, Wurrie and Julia - stepped up huge. But we also got a tremendous effort with offensive boards and defense from Jaz Owens, Shelby Gresch and Sheridan Stephenson. It was truly a team effort.
"We've won six out of seven now. Our goal is to peak in the postseason. We play in the toughest 3A league in the state and I'm hoping we'll be battle-tested when we get to 2A districts."
