Hoopapalooza Boys Varsity game is back and forth but Scots prevail 59-56

Sunday, January 24, 2016

Shorecrest students are in a festive mood

By the time the boys game tipped off at 7 o'clock, the gym was nearly packed and the mood festive. Students from both schools were boisterous and well-behaved. Booster clubs from both schools were selling their wares in the lobby and the aroma of pulled pork sandwiches thankfully carried the day.

The boys game was a back-and-forth affair that went into overtime, with the Scots prevailing 59-56.

Shorewood had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Jesse Reynolds' three-point shot from the right corner rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.

Sophomore Philip Pepple led the Scots with 19 points,15 rebounds, and four blocked shots, while senior Tobyn Lawson had 13 points to go along with his 8 boards. SW Senior Ian Kirk was valiant in defeat, scoring 19 for the T-Birds.

The Scots' winning coach Brian Fischer was happy, but also brought some perspective.

"Rivalry games are always fun because both teams are fired up and ready to go. I was proud of the guys for grinding out a victory, even after being down by 7 in the 4th. We got a great stop to force overtime and thats when the fireworks started.
"After a low scoring game, both teams made some great plays in OT, and I am glad that our guys were able to make a few more. Knowing that we can pull out games like this will give us confidence in the future."

Shorewood Girls upset Glacier Peak; primed for Hoopapalooza

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Shorewood's Lily Gustafson

The Shorewood girls basketball team defeated #8 ranked Glacier Peak Wednesday night, 59-53, in the T-Birds gym.

The win avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of the Grizzlies on December 11, by a nearly identical score of 58-53.

Shorewood benefited from a three-pronged attack, with Jalyn Hizey leading the way with 18 points. Taryn Shelley had 17, while Lily Gustafson chipped in with 13.

The Grizzlies tried their mightiest in the last two minutes to reclaim the lead and sneak out with a win, but the T-Birds kept their composure down the stretch and prevailed in the end.

"I'm really proud of the girls - they earned that one,'" said T-Birds first year Head Coach Mark Haner. "They weathered a good team's run and kept competing."

With the win, the T-Birds served notice that they aren't ready to concede the top two spots in WesCo South 3A to defending state champion Lynnwood and Glacier Peak. With the win the T-Birds are now only a game behind GP for second place.

All of which sets up perfectly for Saturday night's girls Hoopapalooza game that starts at 5pm in the SW gym. (The boys' teams finish off the day-long hoops fest at 7pm)

Shorewood topped the Scots 43-31 when the teams played at Shorecrest on December 16.

Both teams have three top scorers, all of whom offer different talents and skill-sets to help their teams.

Shorecrest's Wurrie Njadoe

The Shorecrest Scots feature three of the most unique (and dissimilar) players imaginable.

5' 8" Senior Wurrie Njadoe won four individual 2A state track championships last spring --- the 100 and 200 meter dashes, as well as long jump and high jump. She can outrun anybody on the court for easy lay-ins, and she appears to be on pogo sticks when it comes to skying for rebounds. She'll run track at Kansas State next year.

5' 10 senior Uju Chibuogwu brings great size and strength to the court along with a deft shooting touch from as far away as 25 feet, and court-vision that allows her to throw some of the prettiest passes known to mankind. When she is on her game, she can be unstoppable.

6' 0" sophomore Julia Strand has emerged for the Scots as a bona-fide scoring threat. The sleek forward can drive and slash her way to the basket, scoring points in a variety of creative ways, as shown by her 20 points last Friday in a loss to Lynnwood.

For the Shorewood T-Birds, the aforementioned threesome of senior Lily Gustafson and juniors Hizey and Shelley carry the scoring load.  Hizey, a former Scot, can be a deadly outside shooter who can also drive to the hoop. The 6' 2" Shelley, a WSU-recruit, can bang in the low post as well as square up and face the basket from fifteen feet.  Gustafson, at an even six-feet, has great versatility, can score from anywhere on the court, but is sometimes reluctant to shoot, preferring to pass.

SW Girls basketball top SC, 43-31

Thursday, December 17, 2015

Behind leading scorer Jalyn Hizey's 14 points, the Shorewood girls basketball team fought off their crosstown rival Shorecrest Wednesday night and came away a winner, 43-31 at Shorecrest.

The T-Birds took a 27-17 lead into the halftime locker room only to see the Scots respond with ten straight points to tie the game midway through the third quarter.

That's when the senior Hizey, a former Scot, came to life. She sank a pair of free throws and then a three-point shot to give the T-Birds a lead they would never relinquish, as SW rattled off nine straight points to finish the quarter.

Hizey was beaming after the game. "Beating the Scots makes me happy. Points were hard to come by tonight and I'm glad I was able to help us win".

The boys' teams square off Thursday night at Shorecrest.

Mark Haner hired as Shorewood T-Bird Girls Basketball Coach

Thursday, June 18, 2015

Mark Haner
Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District are pleased to announce Mark Haner as their new Varsity Girls Basketball coach. Haner replaces Erica Ryan who resigned in May after two years as the T-Birds Head Coach.

Haner, who has also accepted a Social Studies teaching position at Shorewood, comes to the T-Birds after spending the last two years as the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Jackson High School in Everett. Haner led Jackson to post season appearances both years with a two-year career record of 26-21.

We are excited to have someone with Mark’s experience and commitment for high expectations heading the Shorewood program. We are very pleased to have Mark teaching in the building and continuing to build a program that has seen some success over the last 10 years.
Mark is familiar with Shoreline, our programs and our procedures. His expectations for student success both on and off the floor match our school district’s expectations. We feel this is a great fit for both Mark and Shorewood High School.

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

The 8th grade Kellogg Middle School girls' basketball team started slowly against Einstein Tuesday night, finding themselves down by 14 in the first half. Closing with a burst they pulled within 8 at the half.

The 7th grade girls played a solid game against Einstein last night, as they swept the season series, and finished the season with a 9 and 1 record.

Shorewood boys still alive in district play - SW girls, SC boys and girls all end their seasons

Thursday, February 19, 2015

Only the Shorewood boys basketball team is still playing in District One tournament play, as the Shorewood girls, the Shorecrest girls, and the Shorecrest boys have all fallen by the wayside and seen their seasons end this week.

Shorewood's boys face a tough task if they're going to advance to the Regional round-of-sixteen next weekend. Friday they travel to Marysville-Pilchuck to face the Tommies at 7pm. With a win, they would play Saturday at 4:15pm at Jackson HS against the winner of Friday night's Ferndale/Arlington game.  Their mission is simple .... win both games and live to play the following weekend or hang up their sneakers until next year.

The Shorewood girls faced a near impossible task as they travelled to #1 seed Arlington last Friday and lost, then took the long bus ride up to Ferndale on Tuesday where they were soundly defeated by the Golden Eagles, 57-39.

Shorecrest's girls fell to Blaine, 54-48 Thursday night at Mount Vernon, finishing their season. Tuesday they were defeated by top-seeded Burlington-Edison 49-41.

The Shorecrest boys lost their second game of the double-elimination tournament Monday afternoon, to Archbishop Murphy, 57-46.

Shorecrest girls manhandle Lakewood, 63-40

Saturday, February 14, 2015

The Shorecrest girls combined a stifling defense with balanced scoring to win their first round game in the 2A District One playoffs Saturday night over Lakewood, 63-40.

When the Lakewood team arrived at the Shorecrest campus, the Scots pressing defense followed them to the locker room.

Things got worse for the visiting Cougars once the game started as they had trouble even getting the ball across mid-court for most of the game.

Wurrie Njadoe led the scoring for the Scots with 15, while Uju Chibuogwu chipped in with 13. Stocky sophomore Sheridan Stephenson came off the bench to account for 12 points, and soph guard Jazzlyn Owens got all her 11 points in the second quarter.

Shorecrest will face highly regarded Burlington-Edison Tuesday night at 8pm up at the old Mount Vernon HS gym. Winner of that game will advance to the round-of-sixteen Regionals.

Sehome Sinks Shorecrest, 52-40

Friday, February 13, 2015

Behind a barrage of six 3-point baskets from willowy senior Leif Anderson and his 23 points, the Sehome Mariners cruised into the Shorecrest gym Friday night and left with a 52-40 win.

Sehome led by as many as 18 points before the Scots closed the gap in the game's final moments to twelve. They out-shot, out-rebounded, and out-hustled Shorecrest every step of the way.

Senior Brantle Harris led the Scots with 15 points, nine of them in a red-hot first quarter.

Sehome coach AJ LaBree was smiling broadly after the game. "That's a good young team we beat tonight", referring to the fact that the Scots have only two seniors on their roster.  "Our (Northwest) league is stacked, tough opponents every night, and it took our very best to get the win tonight."

Shorecrest returns to the court on Presidents Day at 2pm at Mount Vernon HS.  They play a loser-out game against Archbishop Murphy.
