Shorecrest, Shorewood teams In District Playoffs this weekend

Thursday, February 12, 2015

By Frank Workman

Both the boys and girls teams from 2A Shorecrest, and the boys and girls teams from 3A Shorewood have qualified for their respective WIAA District One basketball tournaments that begin this weekend.

Friday night the Shorecrest boys (9-3 in league, 13-7 overall) open their defense of last year's District Championship at home against Sehome (9-3, 15-6) from the Northwest Conference. Tip-off is 7pm.

The 2A ranks include teams from the Northwest and Cascade Conferences - leagues that the Scots seldom face. The Scots finished second in Wesco 3A South this season. They graduated eight of their nine regulars from last year's team, but this season's squad has gelled with many new players under the guidance of Coach Brian Fischer, and it may be that the rigorous slate of games Shorecrest has faced will make them battle-tested when they face the smaller 2A schools. Sharpshooting junior guard Drew Magaoay, energetic senior Brantle Harris, and rising 6' 7" freshman Philip Pepple give opposing teams plenty to concern themselves with when the Scots have the ball.

All subsequent tournament games will be held at the venerable, old, they-don't-make-them-like that-anymore gym at Mount Vernon HS.

Four teams will qualify for the round-of-sixteen Regionals.

Saturday night the Shorecrest girls (5-7, 10-10) host Lakewood at 7pm in a first-round game. Like the boys, the tournament then moves to Mount Vernon HS. Coach Dori Monson's girls could be a tough out, as the speed of junior Wurrie Njadoe and the size of junior Uju Chibuogwu make for match-up problems for every opponent, as does the Scots' stifling zone defense.

Across town, the Shorewood girls (5-7, 10-10) will have their hands full Friday night at 7pm when they travel to play #1 seed Arlington (10-0, 18-2), and will have a tough row to hoe in order to advance. Coach Erica Ryan will rely on junior Lily Gustafson to lift the T-Birds in what promises to be the most hotly-contested District tournaments in years. Lynnwood (11-1, 18-2) has been ranked #1 in the state for most of the season, but they were recently beaten by streaking Glacier Peak (10-2, 18-2). Ferndale (9-3, 17-3) comes down from the NW Conference with an impressive record, and Stanwood (8-2, 16-4) is always well-coached by Dennis Kloke. Edmonds-Woodway (9-3, 16-4) has been in the top ten for most of the season, but recent dismantlings by Lynnwood and Glacier Peak are apt to have shaken their confidence and will test the Warriors' resolve.

Winners' bracket games will be held at Jackson HS.

The Shorewood boys (7-5, 9-11) open play at home on Saturday at 7pm against Arlington (5-5, 13-7).  Coach Corey O'Hayre is the fourth T-Birds coach in as many years, They have a balanced attack behind Jordan Muir-Keung, Brandon Mar, and the Kirk brothers, Sean and Ian, all of whom are averaging double-figures for the season.

Stanwood (10-0, 16-4), Glacier Peak (11-1, 16-4), and Ferndale (8-4, 14-6) are favored to be the three teams to advance to the Regional round.

As with the girls 3A tournament, the winners' bracket games will be held at Jackson HS.

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

On Senior Night, the Shorecrest boys raced to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter, then coasted to a 68-52 win against the Lynnwood Royals.

Senior Brantle Harris topped the scoring charts with 18 for the Scots, while freshman Philip Pepple tallied sixteen, including three impressive dunks from the gangly freshman.

Shorecrest girls' rally fizzles, Ed-Way wins 47-38

Saturday, February 7, 2015

The Shorecrest girls basketball team had an upset on their mind in Friday's home game against Edmonds-Woodway, and for the first 29 minutes they played the 16-3 Warriors dead-even.

But with the game tied at 34-all with three minutes to play, the Warriors proved their mettle by outscoring the Scots 13-4 down the stretch, defeating Shorecrest by a 47-38 count.

Shorecrest held the Warriors well below their season average of 70 points, but they just couldn't muster enough offense against Ed-Way's pesky pressure defense.

Senior Natalie Kasper led all scorers with 20 points, including seven during that final stretch. Speedy junior Wurrie Njadoe tallied sixteen for the 10-9 Scots.

SC Boys rally to beat E-W 50-49

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Aubry Victor banked in a 3-footer with 10 seconds remaining to cap a Shorecrest comeback, as the Scots defeated Edmonds-Woodway 50-49 on the Warriors home court Thursday night.

With the win, the Scots have clinched second place in 3A WESCO South, and more importantly, a first-round home game in the District One 2A playoffs, slated to begin Friday February 13, against an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent.

The Scots trailed 49-46 with just over a minute to play when senior Brantle Harris' basket got Shorecrest to within one, 49-48.

Drew Magaoay led all scorers with 25 points after an off-night Tuesday at Mountlake Terrace.  Harris was his old solid self with 15 points.

Junior Jordan Rice led the Warriors with 16 points.

Scots triumph at Terrace 53-45

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

The Scots trailed at the end of each quarter before pulling away in the final stanza.

Senior Brantle Harris led Shorecrest with 16 points, while the Hawks' Gabe Altenberger also accounted for sixteen, eleven of them coming in the opening quarter when Terrace raced out to a 17-11 lead.

But the young Scots chipped away, with sophomore Malcolm Rosier-Butler scoring ten, and big freshman Philip Pepple adding 8 points.

Shorecrest boys clinch spot in district basketball tournament

Thursday, January 29, 2015

The Shorecrest boys’ basketball team has clinched a place in the Northwest District 2A tournament Feb. 13-20.

Meanwhile the Shorecrest girls’ team is close to qualifying for the district tournament Feb. 14-21.

Either team can win a tournament place by finishing sixth or higher in the seven-team Western Conference 3A/2A division. Either would join 2A teams from the Cascade Conference and the Northwest Conference in an eight-team district tournament. The top four Northwest District 2A teams qualify for state play.

The Shorecrest boys clinched the district-tournament berth despite a Tuesday loss to first-place Glacier Peak. A Lynnwood loss meant that Shorecrest couldn’t finish worse than sixth.

The girls stand fourth and can clinch a district-tournament berth with a victory at Meadowdale Friday.

Shorecrest is the only 2A school in its division.

#1 Ranked Lynnwood royally beats Shorewood 67-26

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

The top-ranked 3A team in the state showed why they're on top of the heap Monday night at Shorewood as the Lynnwood Royals girls raced to an easy 67-26.

The T-Birds gave their fans a glimmer of hope in the first five minutes as they edged their way to an 11-9 lead, only to see the Royals turn on the jets of a 21-2 run before the first half ended.

The Royals stretched their lead to 59-21 early in the fourth quarter, making for a 50-10 burst after the game's initial minutes.

Junior Mikayla Pivec dazzled the crowd with her coast-to-coast drives on her way to a game high 22 points.

The Gustafson sisters, Lily and Abby, turned in 9 and 7, respectively, for Shorewood.

The T-Birds return to the court Wednesday when they host Edmonds-Woodway at 7:15.

Dancing to the beat

Hoopapalooza is the annual high school basketball meet-up between all the teams from Shorewood and Shorecrest. It goes on all day with matches between C Teams, Junior Varsity, and Varsity for both boys and girls teams.

Basketball is not the only thing happening at the event. Peps bands, flag teams, mascots, cheerleaders - not to mention dance and drum performances.

Here is some of the action from the Saturday, January 24, 2015 events, from photographers Wayne Pridemore and Geoff Vlcek.

The Scots went into the final quarter trailing the T-Birds 39-31, but staunch low-post defense by SC's rugged junior Uju Chibuogwu helped send the T-Birds' shooters into the deep-freeze, as the visitors were held without a single basket in the final frame.

Former Scot Jalyn Hizey was on fire for the T-Birds in the first half, sinking all four of her three-point attempts on the way to a game-high 14 points. Junior Wurrie Njadoe led the Scots with 13.

Both teams left the court with identical records - 3-4 in league play, 8-7 for the season.

The schedule is no friend to either team this week.  Shorewood hosts the league's two best teams (Lynnwood on Monday, Edmonds-Woodway on Wednesday) before facing a rematch at #1 ranked Lynnwood Friday.

The Scots host powerful Glacier Peak on Wednesday before traveling to Meadowdale Friday.  All game times are slated for 7:15.
