Shoreline Little League signups for Winter Clinics

Friday, January 8, 2016

Shoreline Little League is excited to announce that signups are available for the Winter Baseball Player Clinics. These clinics are free for players with a paid registration for the upcoming 2016 season looking to participate in the AAA (Minors) or Majors baseball divisions (typically ages 9-12, though 8 year olds trying out for AAA are welcome).

Is there a cost?
No. As in years’ past, player clinics are offered free of charge to players with a paid registration for the coming season. Registration for one of the four clinic dates is required.

Where and When?
The clinics will be held indoors at the Spartan Gym, located in the East side of the Shoreline Center, at 202 Northeast 185th St, Shoreline, WA.

There will be 4 clinics, held on the following Saturdays from 12pm to 3:30pm:

             January 9th
             January 16th
             January 23rd
             January 30th

NOTE Placement Day (formerly known as tryouts) for Minors and Majors will be February 6th.

Clinics for softball will be held separately. Clinics for younger baseball divisions (tee ball, coach pitch, and kid pitch) will be held towards the end of March.

Who can participate?
The January clinics are open to all Shoreline Little League players with a paid registration for the coming 2016 season who will be seeking placement to play at either the AAA (Minors) or Majors divisions. This restricts clinic participation to players that are league age 9 to league age 12, though 8 year old players are welcome to attend if they will be attending the placement day in hopes of playing AAA (Minor) baseball.

How many players may attend each session?
Space is limited to 32 players per clinic.  This is to ensure the safety of the players and to maximize the time available for the practice and instruction. The demand for clinic spots is usually very high.

What will the Clinics cover?
The clinics will cover throwing mechanics, fielding mechanics, hitting mechanics, and conditioning. This year’s clinics will be fast-paced and highly structured to maximize each player’s opportunity for skill repetition. The smaller number of available spots means that players will work in small groups to provide more skill work, and to limit time spent in line awaiting a turn.

How do I reserve a spot?
Registration for the player clinics will be exclusively through ShorelineLittleLeague.com. You will need to use the same user name and password that you used when you registered for the upcoming season. Because space is limited, you will be able to sign up for only one clinic at a time. Depending on demand, you may be able to attend more than one clinic, but our goal is to include as many players as possible.

As a courtesy to all players, if you should have to cancel after you have received a confirmation, please contact us immediately so we can make the space available for another interested player.

What to Bring/Wear
Players should come ready to play ball and have fun! They must have a baseball glove, and can optionally bring their own batting helmet, bat, and batting gloves. Each player should also bring water, though a drinking fountain is available just outside the gym area.

Because the clinics will be indoors, players should wear athletic attire (shorts are OK) and a ball cap, (baseball pants are not required). They should wear gym shoes, or turf shoes (cleats are not allowed).

If you have any questions,  email

New chapter for baseball at Shoreline Community College

Friday, June 12, 2015

Shoreline Community College Athletic Director Steve Eskridge has announced the resignation of Head Baseball Coach Travis Fox. Fox resigned to take a full time position at Microsoft. Fox has been a part of the Shoreline Community College baseball program for the last four years serving as the Head Coach for the last two seasons. In his final season at Shoreline Fox led the team to their first playoff appearance since 1979.

“We wish Travis the very best in his new position,” said Eskridge. “Travis has had a big impact on our baseball team and we are looking forward to the baseball program’s continued success.”

Shoreline will turn to a familiar face to take over the baseball program as Associate Head Coach Dave Snell has been named the next Head Coach of Dolphins Baseball. Snell has been a member of the coaching staff for the last four years as the Associate Head Coach and Pitching Coach. Snell, a Shoreline resident and former Ingraham High School star, brings years of coaching and playing experience to the position. As a player Snell was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and spent time with the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners organizations. Snell founded the Seattle Select Baseball program in 2005.

“We are excited to announce Dave Snell as the next Head Coach of our baseball program,” said Eskridge. “Dave already knows what it means to be a Dolphin and his years of experience in baseball make him the perfect choice to build on the historic 2015 season.”

For any inquiries regarding the baseball program you can reach Coach Snell via email at dsnell@shoreline.edu or in his office at 206-533-6742.

Shorewood baseball season ends with State 3A championship games full of strange twists

Sunday, May 31, 2015

Shorewood’s baseball season ended with a second-place finish in the State tournament after the Thunderbirds lost to champion Mercer Island Saturday in a game that sent the T-birds to extra innings for the second consecutive day and the third time in four tournament games.

Shorewood and Mercer Island were in a scoreless tie Saturday after the regulation seven innings.

Mercer Island loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two outs; then, the Islander batter walked to drive home the winning run, but umpires ruled that the run didn’t count because all four runners hadn’t touched the next base.

The game stayed scoreless until the 13th inning, when an Islander hit a game-winning home run.

The loss came a day after Shorewood had won a Friday extra-inning semifinal game from Central Kitsap.

Shorewood’s baseball season ended with a 22-5 record.

Our news partner, The Seattle Times made these notes:
“Shorewood played 12 extra innings in its last four games, all must-win contests. All three of the games that went into extras finished with a 1-0 final score.
“In those four games, which spanned a week, Nick Edney caught all 40 innings.”

Cole McKisson

Another Times story said this about the 1-0 loss to Mercer Island:
“For Shorewood, the roller coaster of emotions left the ending even more heartbreaking.
“’I just told them, we battled as hard as we could,’ Shorewood coach Wyatt Tonkin said.
“The odd eighth inning overshadowed a great pitching duel between Shorewood’s Cole McKisson and Mercer Island’s Alfonzo Gonzalez, with both pitching into extra innings.”

Ian Oxnevad

Shorewood had reached the final, with another strange 1-0 extra-inning victory Friday over Central Kitsap.

The Times said this:
In eight innings, the Thunderbirds won on a sacrifice fly from catcher Nick Edney. Bases were loaded after a single when Eden’s hit lifted Shorewood to face Mercer Island in the 3A Championship. After the winning run came across the plate, a fight broke out between the teams. No ejections or injuries resulted from the fight.

As Wagner popped up from his slide, he let out a scream and ran to hug senior starting pitcher Ian Oxnevad, who was streaming out of the dugout. It appeared Wagner accidentally bumped Central Kitsap pitcher Eric McCormick, who reacted with a shove.
A shoving match between the teams followed and it took a few moments to be broken up.
The fight overshadowed a brilliant pitching duel between Oxnevad and McCormick.
Oxnevad, who tossed 11 innings of scoreless ball in last Saturday’s one-run win, went eight innings Friday, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four. In a continuing theme from his gem last week when he picked off four runners at first, the senior left-hander nabbed two.

Shorewood baseball takes 2nd in state 3A championship game

Saturday, May 30, 2015

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

Shorewood high school baseball played a much-anticipated championship game with Mercer Island in a battle for the title on Saturday at Husky stadium.

After a scoreless game, Mercer Island got a decisive hit in the bottom of the 13th inning to win the game and the 3A state championship. Shorewood finishes in second place.

Cole McKisson

Pitcher Cole McKisson pitched the regulation seven innings, with the game remaining scoreless. Cole pitched into extra innings, followed by Will Smith.

In the bottom of the 4th inning Shorewood outfielder Harrison Jacobs
catches a long fly to right field.

The game was still scoreless in the bottom of the 13th inning when a Mercer Island player hit a walk-off home run to win the game 1-0.

Shorewood catcher Nick Edney tries to make a play
on a foul ball in the bottom of the 4th inning.
The game took a strange twist in the 8th inning when Mercer Island started celebrating a win too early and didn't complete their play.

According the our news partner The Seattle Times

Anthony Scalzo drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk and spiked his bat to the ground in elation as he trotted toward first. Noah Hsue came running down the base line from third with the winning run. Mercer Island had won its first ever baseball state title on a walk-off walk in the eighth inning.
Except, it hadn’t.
Scalzo was mobbed before he could touch first, which he eventually did. But Brandon Lawler, who was on second, never made it to third base. Shorewood second baseman Steffen Torgersen appealed to an umpire, who agreed and signaled out, a minute after the celebration began.
That whole story is here.

And the video is here

The game ended with the traditional handshakes

The Shorewood baseball team takes a 21-4 record into the state 3A semifinals and finals Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, at the Husky Ballpark, after victories over Lake Washington and Auburn Mountainview in first-round and quarterfinal games in regional play in Bellevue Saturday, May 23.

The T-birds will meet Central Kitsap at 7pm Friday at the Husky Ballpark in the second game of a semifinal doubleheader, with Bainbridge and Mercer Island playing in the first game at 4pm. The winners play Saturday for the championship, and the semifinal losers play Saturday for third place.

Coach Wyatt Tonkin

Our news partner, the Seattle Times said this about the regional games:

“The quarterfinal win, which started with Shorewood facing a 3-0 deficit in the first, was far from the biggest obstacle the Thunderbirds faced Saturday. That came in the form of a 1-0 win in 12 innings over Lake Washington (17-6).
“Shorewood’s Ian Oxnevad and Lake Washington’s Ryan Horita went toe-to-toe in that game, providing a pitching duel of epic proportions. Horita, a senior, lasted 10 innings in what would prove to be his final high school game. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 10 on 119 pitches.
“Oxnevad allowed six hits in 11 innings, striking out five and walking one on 119 pitches to earn the win. The left-hander minimized potential damage by picking four runners off first base.”

Shorewood's Max Wagner scored the only run of the game in the top of the 12th inning. Grant Jones drove in the run with a single to make Oxnevad the winning pitcher. Cole McKisson pitched the bottom of the 12th for the save; then he pitched the full seven innings of the victory over Mountainview.
