Puget Sound Senior Baseball League tryouts Mar 8

Sunday, February 22, 2015

The Puget Sound Senior Baseball League (PSSBL), one of the largest amateur adult baseball leagues in the U.S., will have open tryouts for all baseball players, age 19 and over, during the course of three weekends in March. The non-profit PSSBL is comprised of over 1,000 players forming 67 teams in 9 different divisions.

The divisions are organized based on age and skill level, ranging from competitive to recreational. Formed in 1989, this year marks the PSSBL’s 27th season of operation. The League is affiliated with MSBL/MABL, the national organization which spearheaded the adult baseball movement in the 1980’s.

Former Major Leaguer Jeff Cirillo will play for the Sugar Kings in the Age 45 and Over competitive Smoky Division. There are a number of ex-minor leaguers and college players in the PSSBL, but there’s also plenty of room in the recreational divisions for players who haven’t picked up a baseball since Little League.

The 2015 tryouts will be held at Meridian Park in Shoreline on Sunday, March 8th, Bannerwood Park in Bellevue on Sunday, March 15th, and Bellevue College on Saturday, March 21st. There is no fee to try out for the PSSBL.

For more information including times, tryout players and all interested parties are encouraged to view the PSSBL website or call 425-644-1901.

The 3N2 Rangers, based in the PSSBL, are the current national World Series champions in the Age 50 and Over category. Also of interest, the all-women’s Seattle Diamonds baseball team plays in the recreational-level Teton Division vs. all-male teams, plus the PSSBL features 11 teams for players age 55 and over.

The PSSBL is well known for donating money, materials, and labor to youth and school baseball organizations around the Sound as well as other charities. This season they are assisting Thomas Jefferson High School, Bellevue College, Borderline Baseball, Make-A-Wish, and the Wounded Warriors Project.

Betting on Boone: WSU freshman pitcher rides work ethic to Pullman

Saturday, February 7, 2015

Sam Boone at Shorewood

The Daily Evergreen, the student newspaper of Washington State University in Pullman, recently published a long feature article on Shorewood graduate Sam Boone.

High school athletes are the essence of their culture - they follow flash, fan fair and popularity instead of their heart. When it came time to choose a university, Washington State freshman pitcher Sam Boone went against the grain. He followed his friend, WSU men’s basketball sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson, and his heart to the Palouse.
Boone sent an email to the WSU coaches during his junior year expressing an interest in being a Coug. Anyone can reach out to a school, but it means nothing without the college’s reciprocation of interest. Cougars pitching coach Gregg Swenson called Boone’s high school coach Wyatt Tonkin, in whom he already had strong trust. Tonkin raved about Boone’s abilities on and off the field.
That conversation got Boone in the door. His work ethic and love for the game did the rest. He grew up in Shoreline, Washington, and attended Shorewood High School. He had a lot to live up to and a drive to not let people down.
“I think a lot of it was because Shorewood had a lot of good athletes, good baseball players,” Boone said on the genesis of his strong work ethic. “A couple guys went to the pros and not wanting to disappoint them and work your hardest to get to where they are.”

Shoreline baseball sweeps Olympic

Thursday, May 8, 2014

#42 Connor Cucculu earns the tying run in the final game of the series

The Shoreline Dolphin Baseball team was anxious to get back on the field this week. After the bi-week and two rain outs Shoreline was ready to be back in action. Sweeping the Olympic College Rangers the Dolphins proved their hunger to win.

Shoreline did not delay getting back to business shutting Olympic out in the first game on Tuesday. An ace performance by Mitch Mondor (West Linn OR) hoisted Shoreline to a 3-0 win. Olympic had no answer him as he only allowing one hit and two walks in seven innings.

Shoreline comfortably held the lead the entire game with a Jorgen Arnesen (Edmonds-Woodway HS) triple in the first earning an early 2-0 lead. Later in the fourth inning after two walks Joshua Fitch (Mountlake Terrace HS) hit an RBI single to bring the Dolphins to a 3-0 final score.

In game two Shoreline brought Chase Kairis (Mount Si HS) to the mound to start. Kairis held the Rangers to two hits in five innings of work. The Dolphins scored early again scoring in the first off a Jacob Zanon (Beaverton OR) sacrifice fly.

Fitch had a stand out game going 3-3 at the plate helping the Dolphins to a 6-2 victory. He doubled in the fourth inning and had a single in the third and seventh innings.

#3 Catcher Casey Fithian hit 3 Doubles for 6 RBI on Wednesday

On Wednesday at Lower Woodland Park Olympic jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs off of three hits. Josh Herrera (Kingston WA) quickly found his grove and the Rangers would not score again. Casey Fithian (Byers TX) hit a three run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Shoreline a 3-2 win!

Fithian continued to excel going 3-3 in the final game of the series hitting two more doubles. Brad Bennett (Hillsboro OR) had a successful day on the mound allowing no earned runs and throwing four strike outs in six innings.

At the top of the seventh and final inning the Dolphins held a 4-1 lead and looked to finish the Rangers off with three quick outs. The Rangers had other ideas and quickly loaded the bases and took the lead off a triple by Matt Noll. Fitch moved from short stop to the mound to close out the game and bring the Dolphins back to bat.

Shoreline was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh with hits by Connor Jensen (Mount Si HS) and Connor Cucculu (Anchorage AK) and a walk by Fithian. With the perfect set up Kairis steps up to the plate hitting single to score Jensen and Cucculu and tie the game 6-6.

After Chris Hall (Mountlake Terrace HS) reloaded the bases on a walk Zanon walks Fithian in for the win. The Dolphins take the win and the sweep 7-6 on the walk off!

Shoreline is gaining momentum at the perfect time. With another sweep over Skagit Valley this upcoming weekend the Dolphins can keep their playoff hopes alive. Shoreline is now 9-21 on the season after a four game winning streak.

The Dolphins will travel to Skagit Valley College on Saturday for a double header at 1:00 pm. They will then return to Meridian Park for the final time this season to finish the series with the Cardinals.

For complete Dolphins schedule and results are available on the Athletics website. Watch games on YouTube. Follow @SCCDolphins and @PhinSCCBaseball on Twitter and Like on Facebook for daily Dolphin updates.
