Dolphins end losing streak

Monday, April 14, 2014

The Shoreline Dolphin Baseball team was able to end the drought and pick up a win against Everett Community College. Sadly the victory was cut short as the Phins fell in the series 1-3. Everett was able to win both home games and then split at Meridian Park.

In game one at Everett Memorial Stadium it was a pitching duel. Dolphins pitcher Mitch Mondor (West Linn OR) only allowed three hits in the game but that was enough. Everett scored first on a double by Alex Keen. Shoreline quickly struck back in the second with a double by Sam Ballweg (Duvall WA) bringing Mitch Hoveke (West Linn OR) home.

Ballweg had a great day at bat going two for three with a double and RBI. Jacob Zanon (Beaverton OR) also had good at bats with a walk and a single. The hits didn't add up even with great fielding from Cody Wolfe (Port Orchard WA) and Zanon and the Dolphins fell 2-1.

In game two the Dolphin pitching staff could not find their rhythm giving up 17 runs to the Trojans. The Phins fought hard in the final inning to avoid the run rule and were able to score four on hits but it wasn't enough. The Dolphins lost in seven innings 17-6.

Sunday was a new day at Meridian Park and the Dolphins came out  ready to play. Right handed pitcher Chase Kairis (Mount Si HS) struggled at the beginning and Everett picked up four runs in the first two innings. The Dolphins were scoreless up to the final inning and Everett looked to take a 4-0 shut out. Shoreline had other plans though.

The Dolphin's found their mark in right off with Connor Jensen (Mount Si HS) hitting a single. An error and a walk by Casey Fithian (Byers TX) and Darwin Bean (Glacier Peak HS) loaded the bases quickly and brought start of the batting line up to the plate.  Zanon hit a two-RBI single to get the Dolphins on the board.

Wolfe then reloaded the bases with a single to set up Jorgen Arnesen (Edmonds-Woodway HS) to hit a double that tied the game! Up to bat next is Dolphin short stop Joshua Fitch (Mountlake Terrace HS) who earned a walk to end the game. Dolphins won 5-4 on a walk off.

Energy was high for game two with the Dolphins looking to tie up the series. Brad Bennett (Hillsboro OR) took the mound and gave a great start only allowing two runs in seven innings of play. The Trojans struck in the eighth scoring three runs on earning two doubles to take a 5-1 lead.

The Dolphins were determined to come back. Forcing three Trojan errors, a walk and getting hits from Fithian and Ballweg the Dolphins tie the game 5-5.

Going into the ninth and final inning the Trojans had quick hits and scored two runs. Jaris Beasley (Mill Creek WA)was able to stop the momentum with two strike outs and looking for the third with a full count on Trojan's Wade Curtis but after a controversial call he hit a triple to give Trojans a 4 run lead. Shoreline was unable to bounce back and fell to a final score of 9-5.

With the top three teams in the Northern Region behind them the Dolphins look to continue gaining momentum. They will take on Douglas College this weekend traveling to New Westminster, Canada on Saturday and returning to Meridian Park on Sunday. Both double headers will begin at 1:00 pm.

Shoreline Player of the Week - March 31- April 1

Saturday, April 12, 2014

Cody Wolfe, outfielder

The Shoreline Dolphin player of the week is outfielder Cody Wolfe! This weekend against a strong Bellevue College team Wolfe had six hits scoring five runs on the Bulldogs.

Wolfe currently has a batting average over 300 which helped the team score big runs this weekend. He also exceeded out in right field with six put outs this weekend and no errors on the season.

As a fast and alert player Wolfe is very aggressive on the bases which allows the Dolphins to get into scoring position quickly. So far this season Wolfe has scored 14 of the Dolphins 57 runs and leads the team with 19 hits.

The Dolphins hope to continue with the hot bat of Cody Wolfe this weekend as they take on the Everett Trojans. Shoreline will travel to Everett on Saturday and then return home on Sunday to play at Meridian Park. Both double headers will begin at 1:00 pm.

Dolphins off to a slow start

Monday, April 7, 2014

Freshman Pitcher Brad Bennett

The Shoreline Dolphin Baseball team can't seem to get in sync during region play. The Dolphins suffered four tough losses this weekend being swept by Bellevue.

The Dolphins started off the weekend at Bellevue with Mitch Mondor (West Linn OR) on the mound. Bellevue scored first in the first inning with on an error and succession of stolen bases. Shoreline answered quickly on a double by Casey Fithian (Byers TX) to score Darwin Bean (Glacier Peak HS).

Bellevue took the game in the fourth inning and the Dolphins weren't able to respond. The Bulldogs scored three runs on back to back doubles by Kurt Lindemann and Nick Pribble. The Bulldogs won with a final score of 4-1.

In game two at Bellevue was a battle of the bats. Both teams scoring early and consistently. Bradley Spencer (Montsano), Lloyd Edwards (Honoka'a, HI) and Jaris Beasley (Mill Creek) each pitching at least two innings in a seven inning game. Jorgen Arneson (Edmonds-Wooway) and Sam Ballweg (Duvall) both had two RBI doubles for the Dolphins but it wasn't enough. The Bulldogs took game two with a final score of 11-6.

On Sunday Bellevue traveled to Meridian Park. Game one of the double header was a pitching battle. Brad Bennett (Hillsboro, OR) pitched for the Dolphins and Nick Kiel came to the mound as Bellevue's top pitcher. With four hits in the game the Dolphins were unable to get on the board. The winning run came from a sacrifice fly by Kurt Lindemann scoring Joakim Soderqvist.

Like in Bellevue game two was full of excitement. Bellevue hit early scoring six runs in the first inning against Mike McCormack (Bellevue) to take a daunting lead. Shoreline was able to score right back with bases loaded walks.

Shoreline continued to score including a triple by Jacob Zanon (Beaverton OR) and a lead off home run by Casey Fithian (Byers TX). In the end it wasn't enough and the Dolphins fell 11-6 giving the Bulldogs the sweep.

Shoreline now has a region record of 0-8 and an overall record of 4-14. The Dolphins move to take on Everett Community College. They are currently 0-2 in region play and finish their series with Douglas College this weekend.

Mike McCormack

The Shoreline Dolphin player of the week for March 24-30 is right handed pitcher Mike McCormack (Bellevue). He currently has a 0.00 earned run average after 11.1 innings in four games.

Against Edmonds Community College, a team with great at bats and a team average of .320, McCormack only allowed three hits in five innings. McCormack's strong play ended a scoring streak by the Tritons and allowed the Dolphins to swing a 10-0 scoring run to a 11-7 ball game.

McCormack looks to continue to bring strength to the mound this weekend as the Dolphins take on the Bellevue Bulldogs. Shoreline traveled to Bellevue on Saturday and returns home Sunday to the Meridian Park field. The double headers will begin at 1:00pm.

Dolphins swept by top NWAACC opponent

#7 Jacob Iverson (Clackamas OR), Shoreline Short Stop

The Shoreline Dolphins kicked off Northern Region play last weekend taking on Edmonds Community College. Edmonds is currently the top team in the Northern Region and first in the NWAACC Coaches Poll. The Dolphins found out why. Shoreline was swept losing both double headers against the Tritons.

On Saturday the Dolphins traveled to Edmonds to begin the series. Mitch Mondor (West Linn, OR) was on the mound for game one facing the Triton's Zach Johnson. Shoreline was unable to string hits together, leaving them shut out for a final score of 5-0. Jacob Zanon (Southridge, OR) had a great day at bat going 3 for 3 including a double in the second inning.

In the second game at Edmonds the Dolphins had Bradley Spencer (Montsano) to start. The Tritons had hot bats to start scoring four runs off of three hits in the first inning. The Dolphins were able to get one run in on a single by Jimmy Billings (Lake Stevens) to score Jorgen Arneson Edmonds-Woodway). The final score was 7-1 Tritons.

On Sunday at Meridian Park the Dolphins started strong holding the Tritons, who are used to scoring early, for the first two innings. In the third inning the Tritons opened up the game scoring six runs on a succession of singles and errors by the Dolphins. Shoreline had six errors in the game making it difficult to hold off a strong team like Edmonds. The Tritons went on to score 6 more to make it a 12-0 game earning Colin Samuelson III his second win of the season.

In the final game of the series Shoreline got off to a rough start allowing seven runs in the first inning. As Josh Lang (Mill Creek) struggled at the mound the Tritons' Chris Osborne hit a three run home run to make the score 10-0 early in the second inning.

Mike McCormack (Bellevue) came in for the Dolphins and was able to hold the Tritons scoreless for five innings only allowing three hits. Shoreline was also able to string hits together. They scored three in the bottom of the second off a triple by Connor Cucculu (Anchorage AK).

The Dolphins were able to score again in the fifth off of a Arnesen double and passed ball. Shoreline came close to rallying for a win but it fell short and Edmonds walked away with an 11-7 victory sweeping the series.

The Dolphins look to improve against rival Bellevue College this upcoming weekend. They travel to Bellevue on Saturday and then return to Meridian Park to finish the series on Sunday, April 6th. Both dates will be double headers beginning at 1:00pm.

Long weekend tests the Dolphins

Monday, March 24, 2014

Josh Fitch #5 hits an RBI single

Dolphins took on a long weekend with 6 games playing 51 total innings to find the right line up before heading into Northern Region play. Shoreline came out with two wins and four losses to have an overall record of 4-6.

Starting the weekend with their first road trip of the season the Dolphins had a tough day at Yakima Valley Community College. Shoreline struggled from the mound giving up four runs right off and as many as seven in one inning. Shoreline suffered two rough losses with scores of 15-6 and 10-0.

Shoreline was back in shape for Saturday's games to finish the series with Yakima Valley. In game one of the day the Dolphins were the first to get on the board with a RBI single by Josh Fitch (Mountlake Terrace HS) to bring Chase Kairis (Mount Si HS) home. The Yaks responded right back with a home run by Andrew Castillo. Shoreline couldn't respond and the Yaks kept a steady momentum scoring three more for a final score of 4-1.

Unwilling to be swept the Dolphins came back in the second game with great enthusiasm. Bradley Spencer (Montsano Jr-Sr HS) was strong at the mound holding the Yaks to the runs earning his first win this season. Shoreline had a big fourth inning scoring three runs and taking the lead! Dylan Wade (O'Dea HS) started the inning with a single, followed by a double from Sam Ballweg (Cedarcrest HS). Darwin Bean (Glacier Peak HS) then hit a RBI single to score Wade. Catcher Casey Fithian (Eastlake HS) had a RBI sacrifice hit to bring Ballweg home. Finally Cody Wolfe (South Kitsap HS) hit a RBI single to run in Bean.

Chase Kairis #28 made it home

Josh Lang (Henry M. Jackson HS) came in for the 8th inning to hold the lead and Josh Fitch received the save keeping the Yaks scoreless in the ninth inning. Fitch played three different positions on Saturday helping the Dolphins at short stop, second and from the mound.

On Sunday, the Dolphins took on a new opponent from the Southern Region the Chemeketa Storm. In game one Kairis started the game for the Dolphins pitching his first collegiate game.

It was a tight game with teams trading RBI doubles by the Storm's Gerhett Moser and Jorgen Arneson (Edmonds-Woodway HS) until the Dolphins opened up the game in the fourth inning. Shoreline had five players walked, combined with a double by Mitch Hoveke (West Linn HS, Portland OR) and two singles from Wolfe and Ballweg the Dolphins scored seven runs to make it a 8-1 game.

In the sixth inning Chemeketa's Brenden Shaff scored a home run in an effort to rally but it was matched by Sam Herzer's (Meadowdale HS) RBI double. Shoreline won with a final score of 9-2.

In the final game of the weekend Shoreline started the game with an early run from Wolfe. Unfortunately, that was the last run from the Dolphins and they suffered a tough third inning. A few costly mistakes scored three runs for the Storm leaving the final score at 3-1 Storm.

With a variety of lineups over the weekend the Dolphins look to have found the right one moving into Northern Region play. They will take on the top North team the Edmonds Tritons this weekend, travelling to Edmonds on Saturday and then returning to Meridian Park to finish the series on Sunday, March 30th. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1:00pm.
