Friday, January 3, 2014

Jeff Millet works out students at North Core

NorthCore Performance Training will be hosting a meet and greet with professional baseball players for local high school athletes on January 8, 2014 from 3:30-4:30pm at their center in Shoreline. Students will receive insight and advice on becoming a better player as well as a  community leader.

Travis Snider (Pittsburgh Pirates), Brent Lillibridge (Texas Rangers), Steven Souza (Washington Nationals), James Robbins (Detroit Tigers), Geoff Brown (LA Dodgers), and Pierce Rancin (Toronto Blue Jays) will be present at the meet and greet. Each player has trained at NorthCore Performance and wants to help students understand how to achieve their goals.

The players will discuss practice type and volume, hitting and pitching, healthy diet, recruiting processes for college and the MLB draft, and the importance of school, as well as how to be a good role model for the team and community. There will also be an open Q / A session and a time for autographs.

Edmonds resident Jeff Millet, owner of NorthCore Performance, has been training professional athletes, student athletes, and others for six years in the Pacific Northwest.

Jeff Millet, owner of NorthCore
in Shoreline
“I specialize in helping athletes achieve their full potential at my gym,” Jeff said. “I particularly love equipping young students with the tools to be not only a great athlete but also a well rounded person. That’s one of the reasons I’m doing this event. I wanted to give students a chance to meet local professional athletes and see what it takes to get to the next level.”

Parent Leslie Longaker says, “Jeff really knows how to connect with these kids. He has been a great mentor for our son.”

The pro athlete meet and greet for youth and student athletes is free and open to the public. NorthCore Performance Training is located at 1501 N 200th St in Shoreline across from Aurora Village. On-site parking is limited, but street parking is available. Car pooling is encouraged.

Sunday, September 22, 2013

King County Executive Dow Constantine issued the following statement on the death of Seattle Mariners majority owner Hiroshi Yamauchi:

“At a time when it seemed the Mariners were on their way out of town, Hiroshi Yamauchi stepped up to save baseball in Seattle.
“Without his intervention we would never have seen Griffey mature into an MVP-level talent, Edgar’s double and the “Refuse to Lose” team in 1995, the 116-win season in 2001, Ichiro’s hits record, or Felix’s perfection.
“I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Yamauchi’s family and friends on his passing. I join Mariners fans across the region in thanking him for keeping Major League Baseball in Seattle.”

Shorewood grad interns for Corvallis Knights baseball team

JK Dykes interns for Corvallis Knights this summer

By Brooks Hatch
Corvallis Knights Media Relations Director

JK Dykes won’t be a professional athlete.

But that doesn’t mean the former Corvallis Knights (2010-11) infielder from Washington State can’t have a long and successful career in professional athletics.

In fact, the 22-year-old from the Seattle suburb of Shoreline, Wash., hopes the Sport Management degree he received from WSU on May 4 will be the first step on the route to a front-office position for a major- or minor-league baseball team.

“I’ve always liked sports, baseball in particular from the get-go, and working on the front-office side was always my backup plan if playing didn’t work out,” said Dykes, who this summer will work as the Knights’ Washington State Sport Management intern.
“Washington State has a great Sport Management program. Originally I was a communications major with a Sport Management minor, but when I started taking my Sport Management classes I liked them so much I flipped-flopped and made Sports Management my major and communications my minor.”

Step 2 in that career progression is this summer’s internship with the Knights, which began on May 6. He’ll work closely with Knights president Dan Segel on all aspects of the team’s operation, from sales to marketing to operations to serving as the official statistician at all 32 home games.

He’ll also assist in the marketing and operation of the Knights-run Reser’s Oregon All-Star Series, set for June 15-16 at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.

“I eventually want to work my way up in the operations side of a pro baseball organization and handle the baseball ops side as a general manager or in player development, rather than the business side,” he said.

Segel said JK’s internship will help him learn and develop his business skills in a real-world environment by working with all aspects of the organization. His projects will require critical thinking, creativity, enthusiasm and commitment.

“In short, this summer JK will cover all the bases with the business and operational side of the Knights much like he covered the middle infield as a player with the Knights and the Cougars,” Segel said. “JK is a high-energy guy who will do his best every day to help make our franchise better and to enhance the experience of our customers and fans.”

Dykes said he plans to be involved on as many levels as possible and “get my hands into a little bit of everything.”

“My goal is to better understand how to run a minor-league type organization,” he said. “But more importantly, I will know what I want to do after this summer. I’ll have a better idea of where to go next, since I’m covering so much in this internship.”

JK as a Coug
JK was a two-time Wesco League all-star and the team captain as a senior at Shorewood High in Shoreline before heading off to Pullman, where he was a 2010 teammate with Knights’ pitching coach Connor Lambert. JK lettered in 2010 as a true freshman, then played for the Knights that summer. He redshirted in 2011 and then played the first month of the summer with the Knights before returning home in early July to attend to family matters.

He never played again. He considered transferring before the 2012 season, when it became apparent his playing time would be minimal, but decided against it. JK said retiring wasn’t easy – “I started playing when I was four or five and making the pros was a goal for as long as I can remember. I wanted to be ARod (Alex Rodriguez), when he was a Mariner” – but he liked WSU too much to consider transferring and starting over someplace new.

“I re-prioritized my life,” he said. “I decided to concentrate on academics, and make sure I graduated on time.”

Mission accomplished. JK earned a 3.48 GPA his final semester and graduated in four years with a 3.0 grade-point average.

JK lived with Andy and Michelle Noonan in North Albany both years he played for the Knights, and he’ll stay at their home again this summer.

The relationship he built with the Noonans, and with others on the team and in the community, were the highlight of his two-year playing stint.

“I became really close with the staff, and loved everything about the team and the community,” he said. “Winning and having success on the field was just a bonus.
“A lot of my teammates at Washington State dreaded summer ball. But I realized Corvallis was a great place and everyone I know who has played for the Knights has had great things to say about them.”

Shoreline Community College announced on Tuesday that freshman pitcher Henry McAree (Shorewood High School) and freshman outfielder Luke Merkel (Southridge High School, Beaverton, OR) have been named "Co-Baseball Players of the Week" for the final week of the baseball season in 2013.

McAree fired a no-hitter on Friday night against Olympic College, allowing 2 walks with 8 strikeouts in the 7 inning game. Henry also threw 11 innings of shutout pitching the week before against Skagit Valley College, just allowing 3 hits, in a 14 inning 1-0 loss for SCC to the Cardinals.

The SCC team split a doubleheader with Olympic on Friday night, winning the 1st game no-hitter, 4-0, but then dropping a 5-4 game to the Rangers in the nightcap. OC forfeited to SCC on Sunday in the final games of the season.

2013 Baseball - the best season in 23 years

With Olympic College forfeiting two games to the Shoreline Community College Baseball Team on Sunday, the Dolphins finished the regular season 21-21-1, the best SCC record in 23 years. The last SCC Baseball Team to finish .500 was the 1990 team that was 19-18.

On Sunday, the Olympic College Baseball Team showed up at Meridian Park in Shoreline, WA thinking the games were suppose to start at 1:00pm instead of the scheduled 3:00pm time. Olympic would not stay or come back to the park to play the games.

SCC Athletics sent all teams playing SCC Baseball at home this season an email on January 28th, stating that SCC home baseball games were at 3:00pm. The OC baseball coach responded to the email. The games were called forfeits by the NWAACC Office.

The Dolphins were 9-15 in the NWAACC Northern Region and were in playoff contention until a four game sweep by Skagit Valley College ended those hopes last weekend. 3 of those games were 1 run defeats and the 4th, by 2 runs.

Congratulations SCC Baseball, for the best season in 23 years.

Shorewood grad Henry McAree throws no-hitter for SCC Baseball

Henry McAree throws no-hitter for SCC

Coming off an 11 inning three hitter last week against Skagit Valley, Shoreline Community College’s Henry McAree topped himself with a 7 inning no-hitter on Friday night against Olympic College in Bremerton, WA.

McAree, a Shorewood High School graduate, was dominant in the 4-0 win, allowing no hits, only 2 walks and striking out 8 Rangers on the evening. He ran his record to 4-1 on the season and reduced his ERA to 2.83.

Luke Merkel was 1-2 at the plate, with 2 RBIs and a run scored for the Dolphin offense and Skyler Fraiser doubled for SCC as well.

In Game 2, SCC dropped a tough but sloppy 5-4 game, as both teams combined for 17 hits, 7 walks and 9 errors in the game. Layton Bush started the game for SCC, allowing 4 earned runs in the 6.1 innings, Aaron took the loss for the Dolphins in relief.

Danny Cavanaugh, Luke Merkel, Mitch Hoveke and Leonel Delmar had two hits for the Dolphins, but none were for extra bases.

The Dolphins hopes for an NWAACC playoff bid was loss as Bellevue defeated Skagit Valley College last night and the Dolphins loss put SCC out of the race.

SCC is 19-21 overall and 7-15 in the NWAACC Northern Region. The Dolphins finish the season on Mother's Day, with another doubleheader against Olympic at Meridian Park at 3:00pm. A SCC sweep on Sunday will give the Dolphins their first .500 season in over a decade. Olympic is now 13-28 overall and 3-19 in the league.

Skagit Valley sweep of SCC Baseball leaves NWAACC playoffs a long shot for Dolphins

By Douglas Palmer

A tough weekend for the Shoreline Community College Baseball Team has left the hopes of a NWAACC Playoff bid a very long shot with the last weekend of Northern Region play schedule for this weekend against Olympic College.

SCC is now 4 games out of 4th place with 4 games to play so the Dolphins need to win all four games this weekend and have Bellevue College lose all four of their games to Skagit Valley to force a tie between SCC and Bellevue and have Douglas College lose at least 3 of 4 games to Edmonds CC and force a 3 way tie with Bellevue or for Edmonds to beat Douglas College four times and leave BC and SCC tied. SCC is 6-14 in the region, Bellevue is 10-10 and Douglas is 9-11.

On Saturday, SCC lost 1-0 to Skagit Valley in 14 innings, and 7-6 with a walk-off single with 2 outs in the 9th to score the lone run of the game.

On Sunday, SCC lost 2-1 and 4-2 in Skagit:

Game 1 - SCC's Nic Van Der Van was dominant on the mound, just allowing 2 hits, but walked 6 along with 6 strikeouts and the SCC defense had 3 errors. SVC went ahead in the 5th with a run, the Dolphins tied it in the 6th, but the Cardinals scored in the top of 7th and SCC was not able to respond in the bottom of the 7th (7 inning game).

SCC’s Ace Jason Shaw suffered from 2 SCC errors
on defense in the 7th inning.

Game 2 - SCC ace Jason Shaw was on the mound and had shut down SVC through 6 innings, as the Dolphins took the lead in the bottom of 6th with 2 runs. A controversial top of the 7th inning was played as SCC Pitching Coach Dave Snell was ejected from the game on a visit to the mound and then SCC Head Coach Ryan Browne was ejected after an argument over play at the plate. Shaw gave up three runs, but only 1 earned in the inning, as the SCC defense committed 2 of their 3 errors in that inning.

Shaw pitched 6 & 1/3 innings, allowed 5 hits, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. He was taken out of the game in the 7th inning. SVC scored another run in the 8th inning and SCC could not muster a rally and lost 4-2. After 7 hours of baseball on Saturday, the Shoreline Community College baseball team dropped two tough games at Skagit Valley College on Saturday, losing the opener 1-0 in 14 innings and then losing the 2nd game in the bottom of the 9th on a 2 out single to score the winning run from third in a 7-6 loss.

Game 1 - SCC's Henry McAree and Ty Olson from SVC were brilliant, as McAree tossed 11 innings of shutout ball and McAree 12 innings in the 1-0 SVC victory in 14 innings. Both pitchers allowed three hits while Olson struckout 7 and allowed 3 walks and MaAree allowed 2 walks and had 6 strikeouts. Aaron Rose (0-4) took the loss for SCC in relief. SCC only had three hits in the game, two were doubles by Luke Merkel and Mitch Hoveke. SCC never had a runner passed 2nd base in the game. Skagit won the game on a single with two outs in the bottom of the 14th.

Game 2 - SCC opened up in the scoring in the top of the first with a single run, Skagit answered back in the bottom of the 3rd with 2 runs. SCC tied it back up in the top of the 4th, but Skagit seemed to take control of the game the next two innings by scoring 4 runs to lead 6-2, but SCC rallied for 4 runs in the 8th to tie it up, but SVC got a two out single to win the game again. Aaron Rose (0-5) was again the unlucky reliever to be on the mound for the final SVC rally. Danny Cavanaugh went 2-2 for SCC with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored while Kainoa Ahsing-Kaahanui and Beau Vintertun had 2 RBIs each as well.

SCC drops to 18-18-1 on the season and 6-12 in the NWAACC Northern Region. Skagit Valley improves to 18-15 overall and 9-9 in the region.
