It takes a village to outfit 1000 kids for school

Monday, August 28, 2017

PTA volunteers are ready to check people in
Photo from The WORKS

The Back to School event Saturday, August 26, 2017 handed out backpacks full of school supplies. They had gently used clothing and winter coats for families to choose. They supplied packages of new underwear, socks, and hygiene supplies. Hairdressers gave haircuts.

They were in a new location this year - Ridgecrest Elementary, so they had all new logistics to figure out how to efficiently move 1000 children and their families through all the different stations.

There were booths with resource information for the families.

And when it was all over, they packed up what was left and took it to The WORKS - the PTA Council clothing room - to hand out during the year as new children enter Shoreline Schools. In a few months, the process will start all over again.

The event serves a thousand children of families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/ or experiencing circumstances in their life that make it challenging to prepare their children for going back to school.

Each PTA in every Shoreline School contributes to the event. The Back To School Consortium includes Hopelink; City of Shoreline; Ronald United Methodist Church; The Works of Shoreline PTA Council; Shoreline School District and the Readiness to Learn Program; Shoreline Community Care; Center for Human Services; Turning Point and the Dale Turner Family YMCA.

Start planning for Back to School - your help is needed for 1300 students

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

August 26, 2017 at Ridgecrest Elementary from 12:30pm - 4:00pm

Did you know that one out of every four Shoreline School District students qualifies for free or reduced lunch? For these families and others, school supplies are expensive and not every family can afford the basic supplies such as a backpack, calculator, pens and notebooks.

The Back to School Consortium, a diverse local partnership, helps fill this gap for those families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their lives that make it challenging to prepare their children for school.

On Saturday, August 26, the annual Back To School Event will take place at Ridgecrest Elementary, 16516 10th Ave NE, from 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm.

For the past 16 years, the Shoreline community has come together to support our students and their success. This year, we plan to serve 1,300 students.

To register to receive supplies at the event, visit the webpage or call The WORKS information line at 206-393-4916 and leave a message.

Opportunities to volunteer prior to or on the day of the event can be found here or feel free to leave a message on The WORKS information line, 206-393-4916.

Organizers are again proud to announce a $10,000 matching grant which will double all contributions up to $10,000. Make a financial donation here and look for the “Donate Now” button.

Donations of backpacks, school supplies, socks, underwear, shampoo, and conditioner can be made at the Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave NE. Other drop box locations include The Dale Turner Family YMCA, the Spartan Gym, Third Place Books, and all the Shoreline and LFP Starbucks. Look for the boxes with the yellow school bus logo.

A list of needed items can be found here. This year’s most needed school supplies are: composition notebooks, loose leaf dividers, pointed and blunt tip scissors, and fine line color markers.

Back to School Consortium Members include: the Center for Human Services; City of Shoreline; Dale Turner Family YMCA; Hopelink; Ronald United Methodist Church; The Salvation Army; Shoreline Community Care; Shoreline School District; Turning Point; and The WORKS of Shoreline PTA Council. The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park and Rotary Club of Shoreline have generously participated for many years.

1100 kids and 4400 pairs of socks - Back to School event gets kids ready for school

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Hundreds lined up for the start of the
Back to School Event on Saturday

Photos by Jerry Pickard

Over a thousand Shoreline Public Schools kids participated in the Back to School Event on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at North City Elementary School.

A consortium composed of a dozen member organizations spent ten months planning for the event, collecting money, clothing, school supplies, and backpacks.

Volunteers were careful in fitting shoes

1100 individual students were registered, coming through school resource staff, community organizations, and online enrollment. No one was turned away.

They all came to North City on Saturday.

Shopping for back to school outfits

They found new backpacks full of grade appropriate school supplies - four pair of new socks and underwear from the PTA - new and gently used clothing, sweaters, coats, and shoes.

Some got haircuts on-site from James Alan staff and others went home with vouchers for haircuts from Gene Juarez Academy.

1100 backpacks full of school supplies

Tanya Lascalle from the Center for Human Services, said "The Consortium understands that we are not able to equip every family with all the supplies they need to start school in the fall, but it is our hope that we are supplementing some of the cost and relieving a bit of the stress in obtaining supplies and clothing so students feel prepared for going back to school ready to learn."

The atmosphere was festive, party-like. Everyone was happy and excited. LFP Rotary had their usual hot dog stand, serving everyone. There were balloons.

Finding coats and outerwear

The Resource Fair had information about local services, ICHS had information about their low cost medical and dental care, the mobile library van and librarians handed out packets for library cards prepared by the Friends of the Shoreline Library.

It was a good way to start the school year.

Organizers are deep into the preparation for the annual Back To School event, scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2016 at North City Elementary School, 816 NE 190th St, Shoreline 98155.

Members of the Back to School Consortium are: Hopelink; City of Shoreline; Ronald United Methodist Church; The Works of Shoreline PTA Council; Shoreline School District and the Readiness to Learn Program; Shoreline Community Care; Center for Human Services; Turning Point, and the Dale Turner Family YMCA.

In addition, the Lake Forest Park Rotary serves a free meal for kids and families and volunteers from local hair salons gave free haircuts.

Dropbox for school supplies

Donation bins are in place all over the District.

The annual event provides backpacks full of school supplies, new underwear and socks, and clothing for the children in our community whose family circumstances make it challenging to adequately prepare their children for school.

Last year 1,000 backpacks were handed out, along with 800 pair of shoes.

This event takes a lot of volunteer power, most of it in the week leading up to the event and the day of the event.

Members of the community are invited to be part of this massive effort to outfit kids for school. You can view the opportunities to volunteer here and sign up here.

And, of course, you can donate school supplies and money.

Back to School Event took place in spite of storm and power outage

Monday, August 31, 2015

Backpacks full of school supplies for kids in need

The big Shoreline Schools Back To School event, which distributes backpacks of school supplies and clothing to families in need, took place Saturday in spite of wind, weather, and a power outage.

Event organizer Tanya Lascalle, Family Support Program Director for the Center for Human Services, reports.

"We coped!  The power went out right as we were checking in the first appointments, but we managed, distributing backpacks, socks and underwear and hygiene products in the dark.

"The stylists from A Better Day Salon and Gene Juarez Academy even proceeded with haircuts using lanterns and cell phone flashlights!  It was incredible that they still managed to provide at least 100 haircuts.

"We were lucky that the rain held off, but the wind resulted in our canopy shelters being taken down or volunteers having the sole purpose of holding a leg of a canopy so it wouldn’t take flight! While some resource fair participants decided to leave early, many braved the elements and still connected with many families.

"The LFP Rotary provided nourishment throughout, grilling up hot dogs for participants.

"It was the most unique Back to School Event we have ever experienced, but our goals were still met. We don’t have final numbers yet, but it seems as though most families that had pre-registered to attend did make it to the event and received their supplies."

Approximately one in four students in Shoreline Schools are in need, although not all sign up for the event.

1,000 backpacks were handed out, along with 800 pair of shoes.

During the school year, the Shoreline PTA Council maintains The Works, which continues to distribute clothing to school age children.

This Saturday is the annual Back to School Event for the Shoreline School District. Qualified students receive haircuts, clothing vouchers and a backpack filled with school supplies.

In the backpack is a brochure about library services. Each student who brings the coupon on the brochure to the Shoreline library will receive a flash drive or another useful prize.

We want students participating in Back to School to become familiar with our library!

Cash donations as well as gently used clothing can still be donated to the Back to School Drive. Any surplus from Saturday is kept by the PTA's The Works for distribution during the school year.
