Hopelink campaign to outfit low-income kids with tools for school underway

Saturday, July 12, 2014

One-in-three Shoreline School District kids eligible to receive free supplies

Now that summer has finally arrived in the northwest, back-to-school is probably the last thing on kids’ minds. But for thousands of local children in low-income families – including nearly 2,900 in Shoreline Schools – the carefree summer months will soon give way to another worry: whether they will be able to keep up in school without the tools they need to succeed.

For these youth, whose parents struggle every day to make ends meet, essential school supplies can be vital to ensuring they are on equal footing with their peers when classes begin.

As part of its annual “Kids Need School Supplies” drive during the summer months, Hopelink is collecting school supplies to distribute to schoolchildren in low-income families to help ensure they come to school ready to learn.

Local donors – including businesses, service organizations, churches and individuals – are banding together to collect monetary donations as well as a wide range of school supplies that will be distributed to eligible families in north and east King County.

In the Shoreline School District, one-in-three students (33.2 percent) qualify for their school’s free- and reduced-cost lunch programs, which means nearly 2,900 Shoreline students will likely qualify to receive school supplies as well.

The Shoreline school supply drive is coordinated by the Back to School Consortium; a partnership that includes Hopelink, the City of Shoreline, Ronald United Methodist Church, The Works of Shoreline PTA Council, Shoreline School District, Shoreline Community Care, Center for Human Services, Turning Point, and the Dale Turner YMCA.

Supplies particularly needed this year:
  • Lined paper – wide and college ruled
  • Spiral notebooks
  • 3-ring binders
  • Composition books
  • Folders
  • Colored pencils
  • Markers
  • Glue/glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Red correcting pencils
  • Fine-tipped Sharpies
  • Printer/copy paper
  • 3 x 5 note cards
  • Protractors
  • Graph paper

For more information about making a donation of supplies or cash to purchase supplies, contact Emily DeWitt at 425-897-3710. Donations also can be dropped off at the Hopelink Shoreline Center through Aug. 20. The center is located at 15809 Westminster Way N. and is open Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5pm.

Shoreline families in need of school supplies must register by Aug. 15 with the Back to School Consortium  or contact the Hopelink Shoreline Center for assistance. School supplies will be distributed Aug. 23 at North City Elementary.

Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities in north and east King County. Hopelink promotes self-sufficiency for all members of our community and helps people make lasting change by addressing their need for food, shelter, family development and stabilization, transportation and adult literacy skills. For more information on Hopelink and its services, call 425-869-6000 or visit the webpage.

The event represented the collaborative effort of the Back to School Consortium members to support Shoreline and Lake Forest Park families in need with backpacks filled with school supplies, clothing assistance, haircuts, and a resource fair. Again this year the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park community was generous with donations of backpacks, school supplies, clothing and hygiene items, as well as cash donations.

Stylists from the James Allan Salon and students and teachers from the Toni&Guy Academy generously donated their time to provide more than 100 haircuts.

The Works of Shoreline PTA Council did an amazing job providing clothing, socks, underwear and hygiene items to families.

Volunteers from many different Shoreline community groups helped last week with the sorting, packing and distribution of donated supplies in the backpacks. The Shoreline Breakfast Rotary held its weekly meeting at North City, filling hundreds of backpacks.

Lake Forest Park Rotarians and 1000 ears of corn at the Back to School Event

A great team from Lake Forest Park Rotary Club volunteered their time and energy on a beautiful Saturday to a Back-to-School community "Service Above Self" event. We were told, by the awesome front end servers, that there were many smiles, nice compliments and heartfelt thanks received from the hundreds of deserving family members who attended the August 25, annual "Back-to-School" event.

Let me begin with by recognizing Jeff Weissman for the yummy breakfast "goodies" and coffee that helped quell our hunger pains and to David Halbrook and Alan Merry who picked up the food, the grill and the supplies early in the morning. Fred Lupton arrived with the 1000 ears of corn, freshly picked Friday morning in Yakima. Fred and his son had driven to Wapato to pick up this wonderful produce. Facing a truck load of corn, the "shucking crew," including David Halbrook, Fred Lupton, Alan Merry, Ed Sterner, Scott and Wendy Wans, Marj Ando, and Jeff Weissman, took over and shucked and stacked 1,000 ears of corn in a little over an hour. I heard a lot of laughing and swapping of stories as Sally and I were snipping and putting clusters of yummy grapes into hundreds of small bags. Craig Sternagel was right-on when he suggested we include some fresh food. The fresh-picked corn, and red and green grapes were a big hit with all.

Scott Wands took over the "chef d'jour" duties, lighting the grills to heat water for the corn and the hot dogs, and kept the "kitchen" functioning, along with Sharon Brooksbanks, Randy Lehman and I, Carol Dahl, while Heidi Shepherd set up the "self-serve restaurant" with expert help of Kathy Martin, Marj Ando Wendy Wands, Sally Renn, Ed Sterner, Jeff Weissman,

Fred Lupton, Alan Merry, Allison Merry and, Dic Lawson. The cleanup crew of David Halbrook, Alan Merry, Chuck Paulsen, Sharon Brooksbank and Randy Lehman left the area in good shape.

A smooth, well-tuned operation emerged with lots of smiles and love dispensed by our Rotarians along with the tasty food. The standard has been raised with the addition of the fabulous corn and crisp grapes. A huge bouquet of thanks to all of the Rotarians who devoted over 70 hours of volunteer time to make Saturday's Back-to-School" event so successful.

If you are at the LFP Farmers Market on a future Sunday, please stop at Pedro Esquivel's stall located in the row of stalls at the east side of the market, purchase some of his wonderful produce and thank him for his generosity. He provided our Rotary with over 1,000 ears of corn and the melon for a little over $200. Pedro also donates many pounds and varieties of produce to the Terrace View Presbyterian Church food bank in Mountlake Terrace every week.

Left over hot dogs and buns, available for grilling, will be on the menu along with Pedro's watermelons, being kept cold and served at our upcoming 5th Wednesday LFP Rotary gathering at Sheridan Beach this week.

Also to be acknowledged is Clean Scapes Recycling who delivered, specifically for our event, six large bins on Friday for the corn husks and cobs, food and paper scraps which they will pick up on Monday to be composted - all free of cost to us. This is a company who demonstrates "Service Above Self." They service Shoreline, not LFP.

Again, thanks for providing much needed services to families in our community.

Seven year old empties piggy bank for Back to School event

Monday, August 20, 2012

Katherine Kang emptied her piggy bank
to buy socks for the Back to School fund

By Julie Kang

Shoreline Back to School Event is less than a week away on this coming Saturday, August 25, 2012 at North City Elementary School. Over 1100 students have registered to receive support for school supplies, socks and underwear, haircut, and other resources

Every year, Katherine Kang (Age 7) has been asking school supplies for this annual event. This year, in lieu of birthday gifts, she asked for socks and underwear to share with children in need.

According to the event planners, this year, financial contributions have been slow and they are struggling to meet the target to support 1200 plus children in the Shoreline area. When Katherine heard that the event planners may have to cut some of the things on the supply list, she decided to empty out her piggy bank. Even though the total is only a bit over $100, it's allowance she has saved over a year.

Katherine said, "Everyone can make a difference. I make $1 a day and I can donate a dime. My mommy makes $100 a day and she can donate $10. It's all the same because they are both 10 percent".

I hope her story will encourage others to donate 10 percent of their day's wage for this important event.

Donate online or use other options on the website.

Help the kids get ready for school - donate to the Back to School Consortium

Not everyone has time to shop for school supplies to donate to the Back-To-School Consortium, so the Consortium is making it easy. Donate money through their Pay Pal account. They are just now getting ready to make bulk purchases and donations will help make sure they have the funds to buy essential clothing items like underwear and socks. With monetary contributions the Consortium can purchase in bulk at low prices.

The Back to School Consortium serves Shoreline School District families living with low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their lives that make it challenging to prepare their children for going back to school in the fall. The event will be held on August 25 and donations of school supplies and monetary contributions are still urgently needed.

You can donate online through Pay Pal at the BTS Consortium website or cash and checks can be mailed or dropped off at the Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave NE Shoreline, WA 98155. Checks can be made out to the Back to School Consortium.

It costs approximately $25-75 to equip a K-12th graders with supplies. 1 out of 4 students in the Shoreline School District qualify for free and reduced price lunch based on family income, that's 25% of the students in Shoreline classrooms.

The need is great and school is starting in a couple of weeks. We hope the community will come together to help the children.
Help us send over 1,000 students in the Shoreline School District back to school prepared and ready to learn.
