The WORKS needs new items

Volunteers get their photo taken before the doors open for the
2010 Back to School event.
The entire booth was filled with socks and underwear,
most of which was given out that day.

Due to most of the inventory being distributed during the Back to School Event and the number of new families utilizing The WORKS, volunteers report that there is now great need for new socks, underwear and hygiene products.

A $20 donation can provide all these items for one student. This year The WORKS has just gone over the 1,300 students served mark and half the school year remains.

For more information about how you can help, visit The WORKS webpage.

School supplies needed for the Back to School event August 27

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

If you are at or around the poverty level and you need some help getting your kids prepared for school, register for the Back to School Event by August 19 on the BTS website or by calling 206-393-4916.

One out of four children in the Shoreline school district is living at poverty level. Organizers expect around 2,000 children at the event, which will give each child a backpack full of grade level school supplies, and help them with clothing.

The event will be held at North City Elementary, 816 NE 190th St, Shoreline WA 98155.

Because of the number of children expected, organizers say that they are far from reaching their goals and ask for help from the community.

Most stores are starting sales on school supplies and there are donation boxes all over the district.

Buy supplies at any store, then look for a large cardboard box with the BTS school bus logo.  Here's a list of locations.

If you don't have time to shop,
  • make a donation online using the paypal link on the website,
  • make a check out to the Back to School Consortium and mail or drop it off at the Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155

Shoreline PTA needs underwear and socks for the 1200 children expected at the Back to School event

Saturday, July 30, 2011

The Works, the PTA clothing room for children in poverty who attend Shoreline Schools, needs donations of underwear and socks for their portion of the Back To School event on August 27.

One of four children in Shoreline Schools lives at or below the poverty line. Their families are struggling financially and outfitting children for school is a daunting task - even for the basics.

The Works has clothing and outerwear, but they only give new socks and new underwear.

All the PTAs in Shoreline Schools contribute financially to The Works. However, with 1200 children expected this year, they need help from the community.

The specific list is below - or you can just go to the store and get a pack of socks or underwear in children's sizes.

Donations can be dropped off at The WORKS portable at North City Elementary, 816 NE 190th Street, Shoreline any Wednesday evening in August from 5:30 to 8:00 pm, when the volunteers are there, or sooner by emailing or phoning Lisa Sharratt 206-369-5548.

The portables are at the west end of the school. There are signs.

Back to School donation boxes are ready to be filled

Saturday, July 16, 2011

Donation boxes for clothing and school supplies are all over Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, including both city halls. Look for a large box with the school bus logo. Lists of things needed are in our Windermere article and PTA Council article.

The Shoreline Back To School Consortium
By Craig Degginger, Shoreline Schools

Behind the scenes this summer in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park there are volunteers, churches and local service providers working hard to gather school supplies so that every Shoreline student can start school in September ready to learn.

Nearly 30 percent of Shoreline School District students qualify for free or reduced lunch. For these families, school supplies are expensive and not every family can afford the basic supplies such a backpack, calculator, pens and notebooks. The Back to School Consortium – a diverse local partnership - helps fill this gap for those families in Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their lives that make it challenging to prepare their children for school.

On August 27, the annual Back To School Event will take place at the North City building. Each August for the past 10 years, the Shoreline community has come together to support local students and their success.

“This year we expect to serve a record number, about 1,200 students,” said Lisa Sharratt of The Works, a project of Shoreline PTA Council which supplies clothing to student in need. Each student receives a backpack full of age-appropriate supplies, new underwear and socks and hygiene supplies at the Back to School Event.

This year there are unprecedented needs, and the organizers have announced a matching grant which will double all contributions up to $10,000.

Donations of backpacks, school supplies, socks and underwear can be made at the Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave NE in Shoreline. Financial donations are also welcome. Other drop box locations include Shoreline Center, Shoreline City Hall, Lake Forest Park City Hall, Dale Turner Family YMCA, and area Rite Aid, Walgreen’s and Starbucks locations.

To register for the August 27 event to receive supplies, visit the Back To School Consortium website,  or call the information line at 206-393-4916. There are also opportunities to volunteer prior to or on the day of the event. Visit the website and click on “volunteer opportunities.”

In 2010, more than 1,000 students received much-needed school supplies and clothing at the Back to School Consortium event.

Back to School Consortium Members include the Center for Human Services; City of Shoreline; Dale Turner Family YMCA; Hopelink; Ronald United Methodist Church; Lake Forest Park Rotary; Shoreline Breakfast Rotary; Shoreline Community Care; The Works of Shoreline PTA Council; Shoreline School District and the Readiness to Learn Program; Turning Point; and The Vineyard.

BTS Consortium - The WORKS needs socks and underwear

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

The Shoreline PTA Council resource, The WORKS, partners with other social service groups in the area as part of the BTS (Back to School) Consortium.  The goal of the BTS Consortium is to provide school supplies, hygiene packs and new socks and underwear for children in Shoreline Schools whose families who are living with low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their lives that make it challenging to prepare their children for school.

The WORKS is having a hard time this year meeting the goals they have set to supply each of the expected 1200 children with 5 pairs of new socks and 5 pairs of new underwear.

They would appreciate some help. The following list has the most needed items and sizes for this summer.

Five year old raises money to help other children

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Katherine gives a check to Jane Hinton, CHS Family Support Department Director

Katherine asked for backpacks for her 4th birthday, not just one, but as many as her friends could give.

Katherine received 20 backpacks to donate to the Back to School Event for Shoreline District school children, so that other children could have school supplies.

When she turned 5, she sold Girls Scout cookies and convinced her troop to donate a portion of the cookie sales profit to the BTS Event.

This year, she didn't sell enough cookies to donate any funds to BTS and the troop decided to donate its portion of the profits to the Japan Relief Fund.
Katherine still found a way to support BTS. When she received a cash prize for her winning artwork from the NW Korean School Association, she decided to donate the award to BTS so that "other children can have art supplies to do art."
"The amounts are not large, but her heart is in the right place." said an event organizer.
The BTS event planning members comment, "she's leading by example" and hope that more citizens in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park can help with this annual event to support over 1000 children in the Shoreline School District area.

The BTS event is organized from the Center for Human Services in Shoreline.  Cash donations can be dropped off at their building in North City at 17018 15th Ave NE, Shoreline WA 98155, 206-362-7282.

Back to School Consortium honored for community leadership

Monday, May 16, 2011

From left, Back to School Consortium volunteers Leslie Brooks, Gayle McDougall-Treacy, Rob Beem, Tanya Schaeffer, Sarah-Ann Woodfield and Lisa Sharratt, and Brian Schultz, executive director of Shoreline Schools.

The Back to School Consortium, the group of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park community organizations which supports Shoreline School District students in need, was among those honored by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) at its Community Recognition Awards luncheon held May 11 at the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Renton.

Each year, WASA 110, which includes Shoreline, holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders nominated by their respective districts.

Back to School Consortium thanks the community

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

A Big THANK YOU to the many residents, businesses and groups throughout Lake Forest Park and Shoreline who supported the Back to School Event, August 28 at North City Elementary.
The Consortium handed out 1027 backpacks filled with supplies.

Shoreline PTA Council distributed new socks, underwear and family hygiene packs.

James Alan Salon provided haircuts to the lucky drawing winners.

Lake Forest Park Rotary grilled hot dogs for the families.

The Shoreline PTA Council’s clothing room The WORKS moved outside to the covered playground so families could “shop” for gently used children’s and teen clothing.

The Shoreline Parks Department kept the children busy with blow ups out on the playing field while parents strolled through community resource tables. Children were able to choose at least one book to take home with them.

None of this would have been possible without the many school supply donation drives done by churches, businesses and neighborhoods throughout the Shoreline School District. This was truly a community coming together to make sure every child within our community was ready for school.

There are a limited number of backpacks available for those families needing backpacks. They are being distributed by Shoreline PTA Council through The WORKS clothing room, 6:30 pm Wednesdays at North City Elementary portables.

Thank you!
