The Back to School Consortium needs your help to provide local students with school supplies

Saturday, August 7, 2021

The Back to School Consortium is gearing up to provide 1,000+ students in the Shoreline School District with supplies to prepare them for school in the fall at their event on August 21, 2021.

However, we are roughly $3,000 short of our fundraising goal that is necessary to ensure all registered students receive the supplies they need. All funds are used to purchase backpacks and supplies.

Please consider helping us close this funding gap, by making a tax deductible monetary donation online at https://www.btsconsortium.org/donate.html or mail a check payable to Back to School Consortium to Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave NE Shoreline, WA 98155.

Center for Human Services is the fiscal agent for this project.

Another way to support the event is to volunteer your time. To volunteer visit: https://www.btsconsortium.org/volunteer.html

984 students signed up for the Back to School event Saturday

Friday, August 21, 2020

Shorecrest Football players and Coach Christensen help The WORKS move 1,000 pairs of socks, underwear, and 500 hygiene packs to Meridian Park Elementary in preparation for the Back to School event. This is the third year that the team has supported The WORKS.

Story and photos thanks to the Back to School Consortium

This Saturday, the 19th Annual Back to School event will take place at Meridian Park Elementary from 12:30-4:00pm.

This event is a labor of love brought to the community by the
  • Shoreline PTA Council,
  • Shoreline School District,
  • City of Shoreline,
  • Center for Human Services,
  • Dale Turner YMCA,
  • Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park,
  • Shoreline Community Care,
  • Ronald United Methodist Church,
  • Hopelink,
  • The Salvation Army,
and our newest members,
  • Rotary Club of Shoreline and
  • Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.
Socially distanced and masked volunteers helped organize pre-packaged school supplies in advance of the Back to School event. This year, the event will forgo backpacks due to remote learning.

This year, there are 487 families and 984 students pre-registered. Last year, we pre-registered 395 families and 898 students.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we are doing things a little differently this year... This will be a drive thru event!

Jill Steinberg, Co-Chair of The WORKS, receives a bounty of hygiene supplies from the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

Families will still receive five pairs of new underwear and socks, hygiene products, school supplies, and they will be able to sign up for free and reduced lunch with Nutrition Services.

School supplies will be in pre-packaged boxes since we won’t be offering backpacks this year and we could not have had the usual 75 volunteers assembling school supplies into backpacks.

Socially distanced and masked volunteers at The WORKS for the Back to School Donation Day event on July 25th

Some exciting new offerings include Black hair care products coordinated by Melyssa Stone, Dean of students at Shorewood High School and Shoreline's Equity and Family Engagement department.

We will also be distributing a jump rope to each family through non-profit Upower, and eight masks per family provided by the City of Shoreline.

The Edmonds chapter of Days for Girls donated 600 hand made masks to The WORKS. All of the masks could not fit in the photo!

Our superstar, socially distanced volunteer team will do their best to make this unique format as special as possible for attendees. If you would like to help out, we still have a few spots open.

Camp Fire Camperz volunteered to assemble school supplies and backpacks
in preparation for the BTS event. They have been doing this for years.

This year, Rotarians packed over 200 of the backpacks with binders, notebook paper, pencils and other necessities.

In total, backpacks will be given to more than 1000 youngsters.

Shoreline Rotary President Dr. Andrew Thurman (photo, right) keeps the assembly line moving smoothly as Shoreline Rotarians and their guests pack backpacks for kids.

The WORKS distributes boxes and boxes of underwear and socks

It's not Thanksgiving, but the PTA volunteers who manage The WORKS are thankful for the many donations and volunteers who are already working toward the Back to School event scheduled for August 25 at Ridgecrest Elementary.

At that event, the community comes together to outfit Shoreline Public Schools children in need with clothing, backpacks full of school supplies, winter coats, and even haircuts.

The WORKS is responsible for providing socks, underwear, and hygiene kits. Each school in the district contributes.

Here's what they have received so far:
  • LFP Elementary 4,379 items
  • Syre 581 items
  • Brookside 830 items
  • Shorecrest 507 items
  • Einstein 421 items
  • Echo Lake 72 items
LFP Rotary donated 100 tubes of toothpaste and the local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa donated 140 pairs of socks.

The Evergreen Middle School Service Club volunteered their time last weekend. They packed 179 hygiene packs in preparation for the Back to School event. Only 371 more to go!

Other recent volunteers in the clothing room came from Cascade K-8, and LFP Elementary.

They still need a lot more of the following items. Anyone can contribute, in any amount. Money is ok, too!
  • Shampoo (full size)
  • Conditioner (full size)
  • Deodorant (full size)
  • Bars of Soap
  • Toothpaste (full size)
  • New Boys underwear (Briefs and Boxer Briefs only)-size 4T-16
  • New Mens underwear (Briefs and Boxer Briefs only -size Small-XL
  • New Girls underwear - size 4T - 16
