ABOUT THE AWARDS

These awards honor outstanding books published by Washington authors in 2023. An award is given based on the strength of the publication's literary merit, lasting importance and overall quality to an author who is a current resident of Washington state.

For the 2024 book awards, judges read and evaluated 292 books.

About the nominations, Joy says,

Our area has so many fantastic authors, so it is incredible to be honored for my work across categories. They sent me a separate email for each book that was a finalist, so I was delighted, and then shocked, and then utterly astonished!
You can read more about my books at joymccullough.com and you can find my books at Shoreline's own independent bookstore, Ridgecrest Books.

Submissions for the 2025 awards cycle are being accepted at this time. For more information, see the Washington Center for the Book's website.

Author event at Third Place Books

Third Place Books has two featured author events in September. In addition, J.A. Jance will present her new J.P. Beaumont story on September 10, 2024

Thursday, September 12 at 7pm, Lake Forest Park

Our blockbuster hit of September, the prolific Jodi Picoult meets with Julia Quinn, local mastermind of the Bridgerton series. Picoult's new novel By Any Other Name is about two women, centuries apart—one of whom is the real author of Shakespeare’s plays (ooh!!?)—who are both forced to hide behind another name. This event is ticketed.

Wednesday, September 25 at 7pm, Lake Forest Park

Rumaan Alam's new novel Entitlement is a riveting tale for our new gilded age, a story that confidently considers questions about need and worth, race and privilege, philanthropy and generosity, passion and obsession.

Alam's best known novel is Leave the World Behind, which was adapted into a decent Netflix film starring Ethan Hawke, Julia Roberts, and Mahershala Ali.

Third Place Books is located on the upper level of LFP Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Historical fiction by local author receives the President's Award Gold Medal from Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA)

Sunday, August 18, 2024

Alice's War received the President's Award Gold Medal in historical fiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA). The FAPA contest is open to books published anywhere in the world.

Alice's War follows the lives of ordinary people from the coastal town of Weymouth, England as they face the extraordinary challenges and upheaval of WWII.

Alice must balance her own ambitions as an aspiring naturalist against her responsibilities for her two grandchildren suddenly placed in her care.

Alice struggles to help her grandson Martin, who comes of age during this tumultuous time. His attraction to the Jewish refugee, Sonja, is challenged by the forces of hatred set loose on the world.

As outside forces tear Alice's family and community apart, she quietly gathers and reforms their sustaining bonds.

Author William McClain is a Lake Forest Park native, currently residing in Lynnwood. In addition to writing fiction he has published numerous articles on environmental issues, focusing on ways to make our home spaces environmentally friendly.

Lake Forest Park/Richmond Beach/Shoreline READS Author Event with Claire Dederer

Thursday, June 6, 2024

Tuesday, July 30, 7-8pm
Third Place Commons Stage

https://kcls.bibliocommons.com/events/6655f849738d8310ebd93284

Shoreline and Richmond Beach Libraries have joined with Lake Forest Park READS again this year, marking the 19th year of this community literary event.

Join a presentation with local author, Claire Dederer, as she discusses her book, Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma.

In the deeply personal Monsters, Claire Dederer asks whether we can separate art and artist when the artist turns out to be morally stained. Dederer also challenges the reader, asking us to examine our own reactions to the creations of "monstrous" men and women.

Third Place Books offers 20% off on this title June 1-July 31.

Sponsored by the City of Lake Forest Park’s Library Advisory Committee, Friends of the Shoreline, Richmond Beach, Lake Forest Park Libraries, and Third Place Books.

Registration not required.

Cascadia College and UW Bothell host Climate Author Night to showcase recent climate change impacts in America

Saturday, February 10, 2024

BOTHELL, Wash - On February 20, 2024 at 5:30pm, please join the Sustainability Offices of UW Bothell and Cascadia College for an evening with Madeline Ostrander, author of ‘At Home on an Unruly Planet.’

The book covers climate change impacts on American families currently, ongoing, and in the recent past. It talks about adaptation, survival, and managing the climate crisis—something that is vitally important to sustainability and justice.

Ostrander's book comes at a critical time when climate impacts are impacting communities across the globe and right here in the US. She challenges us to look at the climate crisis as an immediate and urgent crisis with tangible impacts, as opposed to an abstract and yet-to-come event.

Climate Author Night is at Mobius Hall on the Cascadia College campus 18345 Campus Way NE, Bothell, WA 98011 and has free admission for the public.

In addition to hearing from Ostrander, attendees can connect with local climate action groups and learn about ways to get involved in their communities. There will also be time for book signing and refreshments.

Doors open at 5pm, and event begins at 5:30. Please register here

Cascadia College and UW Bothell’s joint campus hosts one of the largest wetland restoration projects on the west coast and is managed entirely pesticide free to support wildlife and climate action.

Cascadia has various commitments on sustainability and hopes to work with the Bothell community on sustainability efforts. Learn more about the sustainability programs at www.cascadia.edu/bassp and www.uwb.edu/campus-sustainability/
