Changes to bus routes with closures on N 200th St

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Metro buses will be rerouted around
construction on N 200th

From Tuesday, February 17, to Friday, April 24, westbound N 200th St will be closed between the Aurora Village Transit Center and Aurora Ave N for construction. Eastbound N 200th St will remain open during this construction period. (see previous article)

Routes 301, 331, 342, 373 and the RapidRide E Line will continue to serve their respective bus stops at the Aurora Village TC but will be rerouted after leaving the transit center. Route 303 to First Hill, Route 342 to Renton and Route 346 to Haller Lake will operate regular routing as usual.

Route 301 to downtown Seattle: via Ashworth Ave N, N 185th St and northbound Aurora Ave N to the Shoreline P&R and regular route; also, local and express Route 303 trips serving Richmond Beach will operate via Meridian Ave N to N 205th St and regular route west of Aurora Ave N

Route 331 to Shoreline College: via Meridian Ave N, N 205th St and southbound Aurora Ave N to westbound N 200th St and regular route

Route 342 to the Shoreline P&R : via Meridian Ave N, N 185th St and northbound Aurora Ave N to the park-and-ride

Route 373 to the U-District: via Meridian Ave N, N 185th St and northbound Aurora Ave N to the Shoreline P&R and regular route

RapidRide E Line to downtown Seattle: via Meridian Ave N and N 185th St to southbound Aurora Ave N and regular route

Due to these reroutes and traffic congestion associated with this phase of the N 200th St construction project, most buses arriving at the Aurora Village TC and the Shoreline P&R will be delayed. Please plan accordingly and allow extra travel time when traveling to and from these locations.

Aurora Construction update: N 200th going to one lane for six months

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

N 200th will go to one lane for six months
starting February 17

Aurora Construction Update
Updated February 10, 2015

Roadway Work

New curb, gutter, and sidewalk construction and irrigation/ landscaping work will continue along Aurora between N 200th Street and north of N 205th Street. Concrete driveways will be constructed in the vicinity of N 205th and Aurora.

The remaining southbound Business Access and Transit (BAT) lane from SR-104 to south of N 205th will be paved the week of February 9, weather permitting.

During this time, the southbound direction of Aurora and the affected side streets may be restricted to one lane during the daytime non-commute hours to perform any of the work above, weather permitting.

Utility Work

Seattle City Light, Comcast, and Frontier will continue installation of  their systems from N 192nd Street to N 200th Street. This work converts the utilities from aerial to underground lines.

Planned Power Outage

At 8pm February 15 (Sunday evening), there will be a power outage for the vicinity of N 192nd Street and Aurora to transfer power to the underground system. Seattle City Light has notified affected customers. The traffic signals at N 192nd Street and Aurora will also be affected. This intersection will function as a four-way stop during the outage, which is expected to last 8 -10 hours.

Traffic Revisions on N 200th

Beginning on February 17, N 200th Street east of Aurora to the first driveway into Aurora Village / Costco will be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately 6 months in order for crews to install a joint utility trench and a structural sidewalk. Traffic will run eastbound (see map above). Transit routes leaving the Aurora Transit Center will change. See King County Metro and Community Transit for the latest details.

Street Trees

The initial phase of work in this area will require the removal of trees along N 200th Street. The contractor will also remove some trees along Echo Lake Place for street improvements. When the work is complete, the trees will be replaced along N 200th Street and elsewhere in the project.

Additional tree removal along N 200th as part of Aurora project

Friday, February 6, 2015

The contractor for the final phase of the Aurora Corridor project, Gary Merlino Construction Co., has identified 35 more trees that will need to be removed along N 200th Street east of Aurora. The trees are located on the slope between Costco and the sidewalk. Removal of the trees is necessary in order construct the structural sidewalk that will replace the current sidewalk.

As part of the final phase of the Aurora Corridor project, crews will plant 238 trees. This is well above the 124 required by the City's replacement ratio and in addition to the 900 trees previously planted on the other phases of the Aurora Corridor Project.

Street trees to be removed and replaced on N 200th

Monday, February 2, 2015

According to Rosalie Wu, Project Manager, the Aurora Corridor Improvements Project (N 192nd to N 205th) will remove 18 street trees on N 200th Street east of Aurora. This work is expected to begin after February 16, 2015. This is necessary for sidewalk and street improvements including new pavement, sidewalks, undergrounding of aerial utilities and replacement trees.

The street trees will be replaced at a ratio of 2:1on N 200th Street in the same area. The south side of N 200th will have Rocky Mountain Glow Maples and the north side will have Scarlet Sentinel Maples. Replacement will not occur until the work is complete on N 200th, anticipated in the fall of this year. These trees are included in the 238 trees that are part of this project, in addition to the 900 trees previously planted on the entire Aurora Corridor Project.

Everything you want to know about street construction

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Photos courtesy City of Shoreline

The City of Shoreline is in the process of completing the final phase of the Aurora Corridor Project.

The City hired contractor Gary Merlino Construction Company (GMCC) in late 2013 to construct improvements on the final section of Aurora Avenue between N 192nd Street and N 205th Street.

Minimizing the inconvenience to affected businesses, residences, bicyclists, pedestrians, and the motoring public while building a new roadway is a challenge. To minimize the inconvenience, 2014 work has been staged on the west side of Aurora, with travel shifted to the east.

When work on the west side is sufficiently completed in early 2015, GMCC plans to shift traffic to the west and work on the east side. During the summer of 2015, GMCC will shift traffic to both the east and west sides while working on the median. The project will be complete in early 2016, weather permitting.

The City has published a brochure with details about the various steps and stages in street construction. Travelers on Aurora have seen the ground-level effects of the various steps, but the photos show what is being done in the construction trenches.

There are a lot of processes that happen while the street is dug up:

  1. Locating existing utilities under the street
  2. Installing utility vaults
  3. Excavating a utility trench and laying new conduit
  4. Connecting utilities to vaults, access holes, inlets, etc. and the existing system

And all this is before sidewalks, curbs, retaining walls, lights and all the above ground work can begin.

Check out the brochure for more details.

Grinders and Bucky's - construction challenges

By Diane Hettrick

No doubt that Grinders Hot Sands and Bucky's Auto Repair have been having a tough time of it with the construction on Aurora.

Their shared driveway has been open the entire time, but sometimes has been difficult to find unless you are driving 5 mph.

There have been multiple comments from readers that the construction company has been blocking or using Grinders tiny parking lot.

I checked out the rumors, in person, and checked with the City project manager, Kirk McKinley.

I discovered that the construction equipment was not parked on Grinders property, but was on the street in front, so it blocked the view of the business. In fairness, I must note that Grinders has very poor signage. It has been difficult to tell if they were open or closed. I did recently see what looked like a temporary, but very large banner that said "Closed" so it sounds like they got that message.

Kirk McKinley responded to my other questions:
Merlino Construction has been very careful to not park in Grinders parking lot. Bucky’s, which shares a driveway with Grinders, has been parking there on Mondays when Grinders is closed.
We had an instance where CRT trucks were parking in front of Grinders to buy lunch, and were perceived as being construction vehicles. We’ve asked them to not park in front, because of the perception.
Merlino had a safety training a few weeks ago at Grinders, and all ate lunch there. We are working very hard to keep the visibility open. Unfortunately we are working in front and on the side street (198th) at the same time.
The sidewalk should be poured in front of Grinders with a new driveway within a week or two.  We encourage staff and construction team to frequent all businesses in the construction zone.
Both businesses are open on their usual schedules and appreciate your continued business, as do all the Aurora merchants in the construction areas.

City of Shoreline: A Renaissance on Aurora Avenue

Friday, April 11, 2014

The view down Aurora Avenue
 in Shoreline towards Seattle
Republished with permission from the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County

The City of Shoreline is well known as a boutique city routinely recognized for its desirable quality of life with distinct neighborhoods, strong schools, and enticing parks. Developers, though, are discovering something new to appreciate about the city that borders Seattle to the north: profitable opportunities along Shoreline’s re-imagined, tree-lined version of Aurora with its publicly-funded and completed infrastructure improvements.

Shoreline’s Aurora Corridor Project is the redesign and redevelopment of the three miles of Aurora Avenue North (State Route 99) that run through Shoreline. Shoreline’s section of SR-99 carries 40,000 – 45,000 vehicles per day and is a major transit route. Improving Aurora has been a community goal since the City of Shoreline incorporated in 1995.

Because Shoreline has relied heavily on outside sources of funding for the project, it was built in phases as funding allowed. Impressively, when the last section is completed in 2015, over 90% of the nearly $150 million investment will have been provided by outside partners. The goal of the project is to improve pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle safety, pedestrian and disabled access, vehicular capacity, traffic flow, transit speed and reliability, nighttime visibility and safety, stormwater quality and management, and streetscape amenities.

In addition, the City set a goal of unlocking the economic potential represented in the six miles of now improved SR-99 frontage. The project has already helped stimulate the construction of over 750 homes, the ISHS medical clinic, Chuck Olsen’s Kia dealership, US Biotek’s lab, and the Rat’s Nest, the new home and practice rink of the Rat City Rollergirls. In order to further capitalize on Aurora’s investment, the City’s economic development strategy will focus on placemaking to make Aurora function as an attractive neighborhood in its own right.

To that end, Shoreline’s City Council designated Aurora Square, currently home to Central Market, Sears, Marshalls, and WSDOT’s regional headquarters, as a Community Renewal Area (CRA).

“Aurora Square has enormous potential,” stated Will Hall, Shoreline Councilmember and long-time EDC Board Member. “Aurora Square’s renewal will create more places for the community to enjoy and will make the area more environmentally friendly.”

Concept model of Aurora Square as described in the CRA Renewal Plan

The Aurora Square CRA Renewal Plan spells out substantive ways that the City is willing to engage in public-private partnerships to encourage transformation into a destination shopping, entertainment, and employment center. The City believes that a renewed Aurora Square will trigger development up and down Aurora, especially with the recent addition of Metro’s RapidRide E-line providing convenient connections on Aurora to downtown Seattle.

“I smile when I meet skepticism about Aurora’s potential,” remarks Dan Eernissee, Shoreline’s Economic Development Manager. “Look what’s happening along Aurora between Shoreline and downtown Seattle: wherever a sense of place is established, Aurora experiences dramatic redevelopment. We trust that when investors consider developing along Aurora in Shoreline, they will find that we’ve been working for two decades to prepare a place for them.”

Trees to be removed as part of Aurora project

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

3B Project map showing turns
The YMCA is at 192nd and Aurora
Firlands is the angle street
As part of the final phase of the Aurora Corridor Improvement Project, it will be necessary to remove some trees.

The first group of trees to be removed is along Firlands Way N by N 195th Street. The two streets will be realigned to create one access point on Aurora for both. Approximately 35 trees will need to be removed from along the current Firlands Way just north and south of where Firlands Way intersects with N 195th Street. The realignment of Firlands and N 195th will create a safer intersection for vehicles and pedestrians and provide room to install a sidewalk.

In addition, four trees on the west side of Aurora across from the Dale Turner Family Y will be removed to construct the sidewalk. Crews have placed Removal Notification placards on the trees to be removed.

This final phase of Aurora improvements will install 238 new trees between N 192nd and N 205th Streets, adding to the over 900 trees already planted by the Aurora project.

Construction begins Monday on last section of Aurora

Sunday, January 26, 2014

Corrected and updated 01-29-2014 8:33pm

Merlino Construction will begin work on Monday, January 27, 2014 on the final section of the Aurora Corridor, from N 192nd to N 205th at the county line.

As a first step, crews will shift traffic to the east to create a work zone on the west side of Aurora between N 192nd and N 200th Streets. This work will be done at night
from 7 pm to 5 am.

Once traffic is shifted, crews will complete the majority of construction activities during daytime hours, between 7 am and 6 pm. Traffic shifts and delays will be inevitable during construction. However, the City requires the contractor to maintain two travel lanes in each direction during peak-commute hours to assist with traffic flow.

Activities on the west side of Aurora will continue through most of this year, including asphalt pavement removal, excavation, utility work, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, retaining walls, and paving.

Work will start on the N 200th to N 205th section in March.

Following are the immediate traffic changes:

  • There will no longer be a center median turn lane. Traffic access may be controlled at specific locations by uniformed police officers when there is night work.
  • Left turns on and off Aurora will only be allowed at N 192nd and N 200th Streets.
  • U-turns are permitted only at these signalized intersections when there is enough room to safely make a U-turn.
  • Left turns will no longer be allowed at N 195th, N 198th, and N 199th Streets.

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes to access businesses.
All businesses are open during construction and the City of Shoreline encourages shoppers to utilize local businesses. Business driveways will remain delineated with construction barrels and marked with blue “Business Access” signs.
