Construction open house for 3rd mile of Aurora

Sunday, January 12, 2014

There will be a construction Open House for the Aurora Project on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 6-8pm at Shoreline City Hall 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

In late-January 2014, construction will begin on Aurora Ave between N 192nd and N 205th Streets, the last phase of the third and final mile of the Aurora Corridor Improvement Project.

The City of Shoreline is hosting an event to give businesses, residents and transit users on this segment the opportunity to meet the contractor, construction inspectors, outreach staff and City staff. Learn more about:

  •     Construction schedule and phasing
  •     Utility work
  •     Sidewalks, crosswalks and center medians
  •     Landscaping and stormwater management
  •     Retaining walls
  •     Business resources
  •     Maintaining access during construction
  •     How to contact us during construction

The City of Shoreline’s Aurora Corridor Project is redeveloping the three miles of Aurora Avenue N (State Route 99) that run through Shoreline. Improvements include Business Access and Transit lanes, wider sidewalks separated from the roadways by landscaping and other amenities, traffic - and pedestrian-level lighting, and landscaped center medians with left- and U-turn pockets. These improvements continue the community’s vision for Aurora by improving safety, promoting economic development, easing congestion, enhancing environmental quality and adding more pedestrian amenities.

Final section of Aurora to be completed

Monday, December 16, 2013

Shoreline is closer to realizing the completion of a long-time community goal. The final segment of the City’s largest Capital Improvement Project, the Aurora Corridor Multimodal Improvement Project from N 192nd to N 205th Streets, will break ground in January.

The last segment of the Aurora Corridor Project includes similar amenities as the previous segments. However, topographical challenges and grade changes will result in six large retaining walls with extension into some of the cross streets. The project will also include a gateway sign at N 205th Street.

The total cost of this final segment is estimated at $42.6 million. Shoreline’s City Council approved award of the construction contract to Gary Merlino Construction Company. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2015, weather permitting.

Throughout all three miles of the Aurora Corridor Project, the City has brought residents’ tax dollars back into our community through federal and state grants and funded the corridor with no debt. On the final segment, 95.4% of the funding will come from non-City funds.

While the City has worked with many groups and individuals to gain feedback and direction for the project, construction can still be difficult and inconvenient for residents, businesses, and corridor users. Your continued patience has been and is greatly appreciated.

For additional information, an overview of the Aurora Project and construction updates once construction begins, visit the Aurora project pages. You may also email or call the 24-hour construction hotline at 206-801-2485 once construction begins.

Aurora complete to 192nd - ribbon cutting ceremony

Monday, August 6, 2012

City Council, City staff cut the ribbon
for completion of the 185-192nd section of Aurora

After a year and a half, construction on Aurora from N 185th to N 192nd Streets is complete.

Improvements to this segment are very similar to the previous miles of the Aurora Corridor Project, and include delineated driveways, wider sidewalks, landscaped center medians with left- and U-turn pockets, and BAT (Business Access and Transit) lanes.

Two features unique to this segment are the rain garden plaza on the southwest corner of Aurora and N 192nd Street and the “green” retaining walls. Beneath the plaza is a major drainage facility to collect stormwater from Aurora and control the flow of water entering nearby Echo Lake.

The “green” retaining walls allow low-maintenance, evergreen and deciduous plant species to grow on and cover the face of the walls.

State and federal grants totaling $10.8 million were recently awarded to the City for the final segment of Aurora, which means the City has reached the minimum funding needed to start construction. At this time it is anticipated that final design and right-of-way certification will be in place by Summer 2012 allowing the project to go out to bid and begin construction in early 2013.

More information about the Aurora Corridor.

The ribbon-cutting was held on the rain garden plaza (storm water control) at the 192nd Street Park and Ride. Steve Gorcester from the Transportation Improvement Board presented a plaque to commemorate this section of the corridor's completion. Russ East, Assistant Regional Administrator for Sno-King Area WSDOT, spoke about the completion and the start of the final section beginning within six months. Mayor Keith McGlashan spoke about the on-going project and plans for the final stretch between 192nd and 205th.

Shoreline receives $10.8 million in grants for Aurora Corridor Improvement Project N 192nd to N 205th Streets

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

From the Office of the City Manager

Last week Shoreline received news that it will receive $10.8 million in grants for the Aurora Corridor Improvement Project from N 192nd to N 205th Streets. With the $10.8 million, Shoreline has reached the minimum funding needed to start construction on the final segment of Aurora.

On November 17, Congress awarded $37.5 million to King County for two Metro Transit RapidRide lines. One of those lines, Line E, will run through Shoreline along Aurora. Of the amount awarded to King County, Shoreline will receive $4.8 million to go towards Aurora Corridor Improvements, specifically the section from N 192nd to N 195th Streets.

On November 18, the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) selected projects for the FY 2013 funding cycle. Shoreline was awarded $6 million for the final phase of the Aurora Corridor Improvement Project. The award was part of TIB’s Urban Corridor Program (UCP).

UCP projects are typically larger and must demonstrate cross jurisdictional collaboration. They also recognize the importance of partnerships with the business community.

“We were excited to learn that the Aurora project was the second largest TIB funded project in the state and the highest ranked UCP project in the Puget Sound region,” stated Mayor Keith McGlashan. “We’re proud that approximately 90% of the project funding has come from outside sources and not our local taxpayers.”

The Aurora Corridor Project is the City of Shoreline’s plan to redesign and redevelop the three miles of Aurora Avenue North (State Route 99) that run through Shoreline. Shoreline’s section of Highway 99 carries about 40,000 vehicles and 7,000 bus riders per day, and is a major transit route.

The goal of the project is to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety, pedestrian and disabled access, vehicular capacity, traffic flow, transit speed and reliability, nighttime visibility and safety, storm water quality, economic investment potential and streetscape amenities.

Improving Aurora has been a community goal since the City of Shoreline incorporated in 1995. Shoreline completed the first mile of Aurora Corridor Project, N 145th to N 165th Streets, including the Interurban Trail Pedestrian Bridges in 2007. Construction on the second mile, N 165th to N 185th Streets, is substantially complete and is currently in the final punch list phase. The section between N 185th and N 192nd is under construction with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2012. The final section of the Aurora project, N 192nd to N 205th Streets, is projected to be complete in 2014.
